VIDEO KIL LED THE RAD IO STAR THE BUGGLES A British synthpop/ New Wave group, ”Video Killed The Radio Star ” was founded by Trevor Horn(to date still producing and owning SARM studios in the UK, which is usually so booked even HEcan’t get time and a CBE) and Geoff Downs. World renowned composer Hans Zimmer was alsoa member of the Buggles for a period and can be seen on the video. Horn wrote the lyrics to thesong to celebrate the golden days of radio, describing a singer whose career is cut short by television. The 1979 single was #1 on the charts in 16 different countries. It was the first music video shownon MTV in the U.S. at 00:01 on August 1, 1981, directed by Russell Mulcahy. In 2009 Hornteamed up with British artist, Robbie Williams, to produce the title track to his album “Reality KilledThe Video Star”, thus paying homage to this amazing first single of The Buggles.

HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF DURAN DURAN Another British new Wave band, Duran Duran was Simon Le Bon (vocals), Nick Rhodes (keyboards), John Taylor (bass), Roger Taylor (drums) and Andy Taylor (guitar). Andy Taylor was quoted in Blender Magazine as saying “That track came from fiddling with the new technology that was starting tocome in.” This referred to the rhythmic backing track they came up with by pairing a Roland TR-808drum machine (to this day a must have for any music producer) with a sequencer and a Roland

Jupiter-8 keyboard. The demo was then produced by the famed Colin Thurston (“Too Shy” and “I Want Candy”) who decided to keep the demo’s original electronic backing track and just re-recordthe other instruments and vocals. The song never got added to radio in the U.S....until...In 1982,music video director Russell Mulcahy (whose name you will see more than once in these notes), washired to direct the video to the song. In less than 2 months after the shoot, MTV put “Hungry” intoheavy rotation and it propelled the single into the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. MTV later named “Hungry” number 11 on the century-end MTV “100 Greatest Videos Ever Made.” It was the1st ever to win a Grammy ® Award for best Short Form Music Video at the 26th Grammy ® Awards.

SITUATION YAZThe British synthpop band was officially called Yazoo. This song was actually a B-side of a 1982 debut single (imagine what a “45” was and that they always had a “B-side”) called “Only You” which went to#2 on the UK singles chart. The song, released as a single in its own right in the U.S., peaked at #73 onthe Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, it became Yazoo’s first song to top the BB Hot Dance Club Chart in the late summer of 1982 and remained at #1 for 4 weeks and even crossed over to the R&B charts. The memorable synth hook was done by Vince Clarke, similar to the work he had done with hisprevious band DEPECHE MODE. The most famous version is the American 12-inch (think 45 but bigger)remix by Francois Kevorkian...no relation...in 1990. Again in 1999 the song was remixed by variousnoted DJ’s, including Peter Rauhoferand Richard “Humpty” Vission. The 1999 remixes were releasedand once again went to #1 on the BB Hot Dance Club chart for a second time in October of that year.

KICKSTART MY HEART MÖTLEY CRÜEMötley Crüe released this track on their 1989 album, “Dr. Feelgood”. The song was written by

Nikki Sixx about his infamous overdose in which he was declared clinically dead before beingrevived by 2 adrenaline shots to the heart. The OD took place in ex-Guns And Roses guitarist Slash’s hotel room where in fact, Slash had NOTHING to do with it. His girlfriend at the time got Nikki the help he needed. This song harkens all the way back to Zepplin’s 1969 song, “WholeLotta Love”, with the guitar riff drops 3 consective strings sounding sorta like a motorcycle shiftinggears. This bears resemblance to 70’s glam rock band Sweet intro to their song “Hell Raiser” whichreminds us of Zeppelin! Vince Neil (vocals), Mick Mars (guitar), Nikki Sixx (bass).

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON NWA “Straight Outta Compton” was the title track to the debut studio album by American Hip Hopgroup NWA. This album has been viewed as the pioneering record of gangsta rap. It helped togive birth to this then-new-genre of hip hop. It has been considered groundbreaking by music writersand has had an enormous impact on the evolution of West Coast hip hop. This record broke andreached double platinum status without radio airplay support or any major tour. Produced by Dr

Dre with a co-production credit to DJ Yella it was released on August 8, 1988 on group member Eazy E’s record label, Ruthless Records. The opening verse is rapped by Ice Cube, MC Ren deliversthe 2nd and Easy on the 3rd verse.

BETTE DAVIS EYES KIM CARNES“Bette Davis Eyes”, produced by Val Garay and recorded by Kim Carnes was the number one single of 1981. It won the Grammy ® for song of the year and record of the year. It

was also a #1 hit in 31 countries worldwide with the U.K being the weakest. Again,Russell Mulcahy directed the video. The song was originally written and recorded in1974 by Jackie DeShannon.

SAFETY DANCE MEN WITHOUT HATSThis song was released in the U.S. in March of 1982 and the U.K in Sept. 1983. It was theband’s only major international hit for the group. It made it to #1 on the Billboard DanceCharts. The song was scribed as a protest against bouncers stopping dancers pogo-ing(involved holding the torso rigid and thrashing about) to 1980’s New Wave music in clubs

when Disco was dying and New Wave was up and coming.

EVERYBODY HAVE FUN TONIGHT  WANG CHU NGThe song was released in 1986 reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Throughout the

years there have been numerous references to the song in TV/Film pop culture including theshow Topher was on, That 70’s Show when in the fourth season’s opener, Eric (played by Topher) finds himself in a possible future without Donna where Fez is performing the song.

COME ON EILEEN DEXY’S MIDNIGHT RUNNERSThis song was #1 on the British charts for 4 weeks in a row in August 1982 also winningthe Best British Single at the 1983 Brit Awards. This success was repeated around the worldincluding #1 in the U.S. in April 1983. That #1 position in the U.S. for it’s one week holdsthe distinction of preventing Michael Jackson from having back to back #1’s in the U.S. inbetween “Billie Jean” and “Beat It”.

LET MY LOVE OPEN THE DOOR (E. COLA MIX) PETE TOWNSHEND“Dear Kathy This mix was done as an extra track for my BEST OF PETE TOWNSHENDcollection, commissioned by Max Hole. I played it just once in public at the VH1 awardsin about 1996. I wasn’t used to singing this version, and in rehearsals they ran anautocue which I used to remind me of the changes in the verses. When we went to air they didn’t run the autocue and I screwed it up really badly. No one seemed to notice. It is a very cool remix.” –Pete

LIVE IS LIFE OPUS“Live Is Life” was recorded in 1984 by the Austrian pop-rock group Opus. It was their 2nd single, released in 1985, and achieved huge success, topping the charts of many countries, including Austria (8 weeks), Germany, France and Sweden. It’s been

embraced and used by the Finnish Ice Hockey team as their goal song since the mid-80’s.The New York Islanders adopted it as their official goal song for the 2010-2011 NHL season. In 1994 it was re-released in Austria to honor the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

DON’T YOU WANT ME HUMAN LEAGUENEW VERSION BY  ATOMIC TOM“Don’t You Want Me” was a single by the British synthpop group The Human League, released for their 3rd album, Dare, in November of 1981. It was the band’s most wellknown and successful song to date. It was released in the UK in November 1981 and

went to #1 on the UK charts selling over 1.4 million copies. S ix months later, in July of 1982 its success was repeated when it went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 3 weeks.Billboard magazine ranked it as the 6th biggest hit of 1982 and that same year it wascertified gold selling a million copies.

The new version by Atomic Tom was recorded at the end of January, 2011 especially for the film. The band gained international recognition in 2010 after they performed their single, “Take Me Out” on four iPhones on the NYC subway B train.

The original idea for “Take Me Home Tonight” came out of an 80’s mix that we put together one day while sitting around the office. At the time we were trying to come

up with a concept that felt like our generation’s “Dazed and Confused” or “American Graffiti.” We wanted to create a film that took place two decades ago, appealing toboth people who grew up in the 80’s and a younger generation fascinated with the decades music and fashion. Many of the songs i n the film were originally on that initial mix,

like NWA’s “Straight Out Of Compton,” “which was used when Matt and Barry steal the car, and “Bette Davis Eyes,” which plays when Matt sees Tori for the first time at Kyle’s Labor Day bash. Even when we were shooting the film, everyone from the cast to the crew had made their own 80’s mixes, music always seemed to be playing.

There is something about the songs from this decade which seem to transport people right back to the time and place they first heard them. When put into a film like “Take

Me Home Tonight” the music became an essential character and an unforgettable aspect of this project. –Topher Grace & Gordon Kaywin

SPECIAL THANKS:

Putting together the music for a movie like “Take Me Home Tonight” was no easy task. Both the producers and the filmmaker had a very ambitious list of songs that werestrategically woven into the plot of the film. There were entire scenes built around classic 80’s tracks. Without the tireless efforts of our music supervisor Kathy Nelson, a

twenty-year veteran of the music business, we would never have gotten everything we could have imagined and more. Kathy, you are truly our MVP. We would also like

to thank Monte, Avery, and everyone at Universal Republic for their efforts and commitment to making this a truly outstanding soundtrack. And lastly we would like to

thank Atomic Tom for taking a song like, “Don’t You Want Me,” and delivering a cover that surpassed our wildest expectations. –Topher Grace & Gordon Kaywin
