DIGITALIZING BLOOM’S TAXONOMY VIA 21ST CENTURY TECHNOLOGY TOOLS
TRENDS IN OCCUPATIONAL STUDIES CONFERENCE ACME, MI 10.17.13
A’Kena LongBenton, EdS, PMCMacomb Community College
Workshop Abstract
This workshop will begin with comparing/contrasting Bloom’s Taxonomy original and revised versions. Next, it will explain the revised version in detail. Moreover, participants will be exposed to Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy, which addresses how technologies readily connect to pedagogical practices across various disciplines.
The facilitator will introduce the following technologies: Animoto, Blogspot, Camtasia, Edublog, Glogster, Google Drive, Poll Everywhere, Prezi, QuestGarden, QuizBreak!, Skype, Slideshare, SurveyMonkey, TED, Toondoo, VoiceThread, Voki, Weebly, Wikispaces, and YouTube.
The technologies can be used in several ways: 1) audio announcements/homework reminders; 2) audiovisual lectures; 3) content presentations; 4) course management systems; 5) curriculum webs; 6) electronic journal writing; 7) formative assessment tools; 8) inquiry-based learning; 9) quiz reviews; 10) voice/video-based discussion boards; and 11) video attention-grabbers or content summaries.
Content/Format Activities
As time permits, the aforementioned technologies will be introduced in a workshop format where instructors will actively participate in technology-based instructional activities. For example, using the Poll Everywhere tool, instructors will electronically respond to a posed question using their mobile devices (cell phone, laptop, or tablet). Subsequently, electronic real-time survey results will appear on an LCD overhead projector screen. Also, instructors will create at least one technology tool that they can use in their classroom and share their creations at the conclusion of the workshop. Below are self-created examples of some of the aforementioned technology tools.
Furthermore, in this workshop, instructors will have an opportunity to witness what the aforementioned technologies look like in practice. (There's nothing worst than hearing about a concept, but never seeing it in action! :-)) Most importantly, they will be able to walk away from this workshop with applicable knowledge that will assist them in their classrooms. This session will not be a "sit and get" rather a "make and take" professional development. The facilitator is not interested in simply feeding the instructors information that they may never use, but rather offer them an authentic learning experience.

Words of Caution
The technologies explored promote: active and independent learning; application; creativity; critical thinking; problem solving; student engagement; and reflection—not mere comprehension.
Word of Caution: Soft skills need to be
addressed when technologies are used, e.g., time management skills. There are countless technologies and distractions on the internet. If students are not instructor-guided and/or focused, then tons of unproductive hours can be spent on the web with no intellectual gains.
