WHAT IS MATTER ?????
Matter is anything that takes up space (volume) and has mass, everything in the universe is made up of matter.
WHAT ARE THE STATES OF
MATTER??
The three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.
A solid atoms are tightly packed together (vibrate) and they have a definite shape.
A liquid atoms move more freely and they take up space of a container.
A gas atoms move more quickly, they bounce off each other. They have no definite shape and they fill the container completely.
Examples of a solid, liquid, and
gas
Ex#1:solid to liquid:meltingEx#2:liquid to solid:freezingEx#3:solid to gas:sublimationEx#4:gas to liquid:condensationEx#5:liquid to gas:evaporation
PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL
PROPERTIES
The difference between a physical and chemical properties is that a physical property can be observed measured without changing the composition of matter and a chemical property describes its potential to undergo some chemical changes or reaction by its composition.
EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL AND
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Ex#1:hardnessEx#2:densityEx#3:colorEx#4:textureEx#5:fractureChemical PropertiesEx#1:flammabilityEx#2:corrosionEx#3:oxidation
PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL
CHANGES
The difference between physical and chemical change is that a physical change can turn something back into its regular form and a chemical change does not change something back into its regular form.
EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL AND
CHEMICAL CHANGES
Ex#1:grating cheeseEx#2:slicing pizzaEx#3:breaking your legEx#4:slicing breadEx#5:chopping woodCHEMICAL CHANGEEx#1:roasting marshmallowsEx#2:roasting hot dogsEx#3:car burning gasoline to runEx#4:lighting a candle
WHAT IS A ATOM??????
An atom is the smallest part of matter. The parts of an atom are protons, neutrons, and electrons.
WHAT IS A ELEMENT????
An element is made up of the same kind of atoms.
Ex#1:6ccarbon12.01
WHAT IS A COMPOUND???
A compound are made up of two or more elements.
Ex#1:H2O
WHAT IS THE PERIODIC
TABLE?????
The periodic table explains the elements of an atom. You read the periodic table by looking at how many protons are there. The patterns of the periodic table are weather the element is a metal, non-metal, or a metalloid.
SUBSTANCES AND MIXTURES
The difference between a substance and a mixture is that a substance is matter that has the same composition and properties through out and a mixture is when two or more substances come together, but don't combine to make a new substance.
HETEROGENEOUS AND
HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURES
The difference between a heterogeneous mixture and a homogeneous mixture is that a heterogeneous mixture is unevenly mixed
Ex#1:salad dressingEx#2:sand and waterand a homogeneous mixture is evenly
mixed.Ex#1:saltwater
WHAT IS A SOLUTION????????
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances that are evenly mixed. A solute is a substance that is disolved. A solvent is a substance that disolves the solute.Ex#1:kool aidEx#2:lemonadeEx#3:sugar and water mixedEx#4:salt and water mixedEx#5:coffee grains
WHAT IS SOLULABILITY???
Soluliablity is a measurement that discribes how much solute disolves in a given amount of solvent.
