Fireplaces have been used for centuries in houses in colder

regions all over the world where people needed to keep

their homes warm during chilly winters. They were even one

of the most striking features of the traditional homes as they were placed in the living rooms or major rooms of the house

and were easily visible and accessible whenever needed.

People gathered around them to have some good time and

eat and drink enjoying the warmth created by the fireplaces,

while the outside weather was too cold for any outdoor activities. Movies have romanticized fireplaces by showing

couples snuggled in blankets getting cozy around them.

Traditional fireplaces

What image comes to your mind when you try to think

about a traditional fireplace? More often, it is the image of a huge hearth of stone compactly built into a wall. It

commonly has a large log that is used to keep the

fireplace burning. The very nature of these fireplaces

makes it necessary that they are integrated into the

overall design of the house while building it. The traditional fireplaces are typically characterized by large

flames burning brightly giving out warmth and even

sparkles and smoke that is carried out of the house

through the chimney in the roof.

Wood burning fireplaces

These fireplaces have revived their popularity in the

recent past since they are considered to be more

environmental friendly option over some others. They

typically burn small portion of wood for producing fire

and heat. These fireplaces do not release much

carbon dioxide while burning and thus do not cause

much pollution of the atmosphere. These burners are

mostly built with plate steel or cast iron and you can

easily fit them in fireplace. They produce ample

amount of heat so that a single wood-burning fireplace

can be used to keep your entire house warm. This

makes them quite convenient as well as economical.

Electric fireplaces

If you are more prone to using the modern types of

fireplaces that offer the benefits of the traditional ones sans their ill-effects, then you will certainly find the electric

fireplaces an attractive option. They look almost like the

wood-burning variety with the only difference that they use

electricity as fuel instead of wood. One of the most striking

of their features is that they don’t require any venting pipes or chimneys as they do not produce any fumes or smoke

while burning. What’s more they are great as a decorative

item in your living room as there are fireplaces that look like

flat TV screens with attractive visual effects.

Gas burning Fireplaces

Another variety of fireplaces is the gas fireplaces. It is even

possible to covert a traditional fireplace into a gas fireplace easily. The gas fireplaces use natural gas to produce fire and

heat in order to keep your house warm. This gas is supplied to

the fireplace through pipes. Although gas does produce

some amount of fumes while burning, it doesn’t produce as

much smoke as the burning wood produces. Thus it is safer for the residents of the house. The burner can be put on or off

and the flame and thus temperature can be adjusted with

the help of a button, making it a more convenient and

economical option.
