Why Different Foods in Different Regions?

• Level of Development- people in developed countries tend to consumer more food and from different sources than people do in developing countries

• Physical Conditions- Climate influences what is grown and then what is consumed– Developed countries food is shipped long

distances

• Cultural Preferences- some food preference and avoidances are expressed without regard to the above factors

Total Consumption of Food

• Dietary Energy Consumption- the amount of food that an individual consumes– Kilocalorie and calorie

• Humans derive most of their kilocalories through consumption of cereal grain- grass that yields grain for food– Maize (corn,) wheat, and rice (40%)

Source of Nutrients• Protein is needed for

growth and maintenance of the human body—where a country gets the majority of its protein tells a lot about the people there– The primary difference

between LDC and MDC is the source of protein in their diets

Dietary Energy Needs

• Average consumption per day– 2,000

• People in developed countries are consuming on average nearly twice the recommended minimum

• Calorie consumption in U.S. is the highest in the World

United States

Undernourishment

• Undernourishment– Is dietary energy consumption that is

continuously below the minimum requirement for maintaining a healthy life and carrying out light physical activity.

• Largest numbers of undernourished people are in India and China

• Sub – Saharan Africa is struggling to keep food production ahead of population growth
