DHS Students, Coach Honored at National Speech & Debate Tournament RIPON, Wis. DHS Students, Coach Honored at National Speech & Debate Tournament

RIPON, Wis. (June 20, 2016) – The National Speech & Debate Association is proud to announce that Grace Sheene, a rising

senior, and Caitlin Haskett, a recent graduate of Danville High School, advanced beyond preliminary rounds to the national

awards rounds at the National Speech & Debate Tournament—the largest academic competition in the world. Sheene

advanced through six preliminary rounds in Dramatic Interpretation to compete in the National Octofinals, featuring the top

60 dramatic performers in the country, before being eliminated from the competition. Haskett advanced to the national

Semifinals in the Senate after two days of preliminary sessions. Additionally, in the supplemental events for students who

do not advance past Octofinals, Sheene competed in Prose Reading and advanced through nine competition rounds before

being eliminated in the National Semifinals.

“The National Tournament showcases the brightest and most talented students in the country,” said J. Scott Wunn,

Executive Director of the National Speech & Debate Association. More than 4,000 students representing more than 1,200

schools competed at the National Speech & Debate Tournament held in Salt Lake City June 13-17. These students

represented more than 150,000 who competed in 106 district competitions from Maine to Guam in March and April for the

right to represent their districts at the Nationals.

Additionally, Danville High forensics Head Coach Steve Meadows was awarded the Ralph E. Carey Award for Distinguished

Career Service during the National Awards Ceremony on Friday night. Meadows has served as Kentucky’s District Chair for

19 terms and was noted for his leadership in founding the state’s annual professional development conference, SPEAK

(Speech Professional Education Alliance of Kentucky) as well as for his service to NSDA on several ad hoc committees plus

annual service at the National Tournament in tabulations; Meadows currently serves as the organization’s Director of Public

Speaking at Nationals and on the national Educational Conference and Curriculum committees.

SACRAMENTO: Danville High School had its best showing in several years at the NCFL Grand National Speech and Debate

Tournament held in Sacramento over Memorial Day weekend. Students from 517 high schools, the winners of 67 contests

held around the country, competed in six speech and four debate events Saturday and Sunday.

Speech competitors, approximately 240 per event, spoke in four preliminary rounds on Saturday at locations around

Sacramento. The top 48 entries in each event advanced to the national Octofinals, with subsequent breaks to Quarterfinals

(top 24), Semifinals (12), and the Finalists (top 6).

Senior Hannah Draut led the team with a Sixth Place finish in Dramatic Performance. Advancing to Quarterfinals in Duo

Interpretation were the teams of Dylan Godbey / Clay Williams and Matt Ballard / McCallum Morley. Charlie Hall advanced

to Quarterfinals in Declamation. Grace Sheene broke to Octofinals in Oral Interpretation.

DHS led the state in a strong showing from the winners of the Louisville contest. Murray High School's Brynn Jones won

Original Oratory, and the Duo Interpretation team of Nelson and Nelson from Boone County High placed sixth

overall. Thirteen Kentucky entries overall advanced into awards rounds in Speech including the five from DHS.

Four DHS Speakers off to

Salt Lake City for NSDA Kentucky’s best high school speech and debate students went head to head at Centre College March 18 and 19 at the annual Kentucky District Tournament of the National Speech and Debate Association. Students competed in eight speech and four debate categories for the right to represent the Commonwealth at the Grand Nationals, the largest academic contest in the world, in Salt Lake City in June. Student competed in as many as five preliminary rounds before advancing to the finals with the top two entries in each event moving on to NSDA Nationals, a contest dating back to 1931 that features students from Maine to Guam competing for college scholarships and the national titles. Tournament host Centre College was named the Kentucky District Communicator of the Year in support of its continued sponsorship of national and state debates for political candidates, from the Vice Presidential debates of 2000 and 2012 to debates for gubernatorial and Senate races. Accepting on behalf of Centre was Dr. Mary Gulley, who has helped coordinate the tournament with host Centre for many of the last nineteen years the tournament has run at Centre (with Congressional Debate events hosted by Danville – Bluegrass Community and Technical College). Andrew Brennen, a Dunbar High School graduate who serves as the National Field Director of Student Voice after co-founding the Pritchard Committee Student Voice Team, was awarded the District’s Alumnus of the Year honor. In the team contests, Rowan County High School took team honors in Speech with Danville High tops in Congress and duPont Manual winning debate. Beechwood High School won the District plaque for overall top performances in speech and debate. Ryle High School was the winner of the Traveling Team Trophy; Assumption High School was named the District’s Chapter Achievement award winner. Murray High School’s Michael Robinson was named the District Coach of the Year with Trinity High School’s Jorge Rojas-Ortega named the District’s Student of the Year. Zane Arnold of Danville won the Susan Moore Scholarship; Rowan County’s Makda Mehari won the Harlen Hamm Scholarship. STATE CHAMPIONS!!

Danville High School won the 2016 Kentucky High School Speech League (KHSSL) State Speech Tournament for high schools held March 11-12 on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington. This was Danville’s sixth state title since 2006. Rowan County HS, Boone County HS, Henry Clay HS, Murray HS, and Paul Laurence Dunbar HS placed second through sixth in the team contest. In a tight race for the top spot, Danville and Rowan were tied after three preliminary rounds of speech competition Friday, and each broke twenty-four entries into the semifinal rounds (top eighteen competitors in each of thirteen speech categories). Danville then moved fourteen of those entries into the state finals (top six in each event) to Rowan’s twelve, and DHS won by a margin of eighteen points overall, 221-203. Danville had previously won the Bluegrass Regional tournament, one of seven contests held around Kentucky to qualify students to the KHSSL State meet. DHS won state titles in three of the thirteen speech events. Zane Arnold and Matt Ballard repeated as the state champions in Improvisational Duo, Lydia Graham won Storytelling, and the Duo Interpretation team of Dylan Godbey and Clay Williams won their category. Also in state finals were Charlie Hall (fourth in Declamation), Becky Mohr (sixth in Declamation), Hannah Draut (fifth in Dramatic Interpretation and sixth in Prose), Grace Sheene (second in Dramatic Interpretation and second in Prose), the Duo Interpretation team of Chandane Cheam and Levi Daugherty (sixth), Lydia Graham (sixth in Humorous Interpretation and second in Program Oral Interpretation), the Improvisational Duo team of Charlie Hall and Haley Hopkins (third), and Zane Arnold (third in Program Oral Interpretation). DHS State semifinalists were Dylan Godbey

(Dramatic Interpretation), Matt Ballard and McCallum Morley (Duo Interpretation), Levi Daugherty (Humorous Interpretation), Charlie Hall (Humorous Interpretation), Dylan Godbey and Natalie Grubbs (Improvisational Duo), Sara Barringer (Oratory), Celeste Fieberg (Oratory), Hannah Draut (Program Oral Interpretation), Zane Arnold (Storytelling), and Hope McCowan (Storytelling). Additionally, at the KHSSL State Debate Tournament held March 10-11, Zane Arnold placed fourth and Caitlin Haskett advanced to the Super Session (top twenty-four) in

Congressional Debate.

DHS Advances 11 to CFL NATS in Sacramento Danville High School won the Louisville area tournament of the National Catholic Forensic League for the nineteenth straight year on Saturday, placing first in speech and second in debate overall. The annual contest serves as the qualifying meet for the NCFL Grand National Tournament, held each year over Memorial Day weekend. 2016 will be held in Sacramento; Louisville will host in 2017. Students from around the state competed in six speech and three debate events in the contest held in Hodgenville at LaRue County High School on March 5. Contestants competed in four rounds with the top five scorers in each event advancing on to Sacramento. Eleven DHS competitors qualified to compete at the national tournament: Zane Arnold and Greg Goldie in Congressional Debate, Charlie Hall and Claire Strysick in Declamation, Hannah Draut and Lydia Graham in Dramatic Performance, the teams of Dylan Godbey/Clay Williams and Matt Ballard/McCallum Morley in Duo Interpretation, and Grace Sheene in Oral

Interpretation.

DHS WINS KESDA Danville High School won the twenty-seventh annual Kentucky Educational Speech and Drama Association Senior Forum held in Lexington on February 18-20. The team narrowly beat second place rival Rowan County by a score of 519 to 505 with points earned in fifteen speech and one debate event; the two teams were two hundred points ahead of third place Boone County. Danville and Rowan were nearly tied throughout the entire contest with Danville’s success in Congressional Debate being the deciding factor. Boone County, Murray, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Harrison County rounded out the top six teams scores at the Forum. This is Danville’s fourth win at KESDA (previous titles were in 2008, 2011, and 2012). Danville’s Seniors led the Admirals with the Group Interpretation Singin’ in the Rain (seniors Zane Arnold, Hannah Draut, Dylan Godbey, and Lydia Graham) taking the top prize. Arnold also won Congressional Debate and Storytelling; Draut won Program Oral Interpretation. Juniors Matthew Ballard and McCallum Morley (Duo Interpretation) and Grace Sheene (Prose) were also Forum Champions, giving Danville six KESDA titles in the sixteen events. Students competed in three days of competitions with three preliminary rounds in each event. The top twelve entries in each event advanced to meet each other in Semifinals on Saturday morning with the top six moving on into the Finals (seven if ties) for the Forum Awards. Two additional awards were earned by DHS students at the contest. The John Edwards Memorial Pentathlon contest was open to any student who competed in the maximum five events at KESDA and who had entries in at least one of each of the three areas of speaking: Limited Preparation, Interpretation of Literature, and Original Speech. Junior Abigail Anderson was recognized with third place in this contest; Greg Goldie was sixth; Celeste Fieberg was tenth. Additionally, Top Novice awards were given in each event for students who had never participated in forensics contests before this school year. Danville’s Alecia Devney took this award in both Extemporaneous Speaking and Informative Speaking.

DHS WINS REGIONALS

Danville High School placed first of all high schools competing in the twenty-four county Bluegrass Region of the Kentucky High School Speech League (KHSSL) and was named Regional Speech Champion on Saturday. DHS placed twenty-seven points ahead of second place Lexington Henry Clay with Lexington Dunbar placing third.

The tournament was held at SCAPA Bluegrass Middle school in Lexington and featured competition in thirteen speech events. Schools could send up to three entries in each event; Danville has qualified all thirty-nine entries possible to compete in the state speech tournament. Additionally, Regional Champions and Runners Up were named in each speech event for the best scores at the Regional Tournament. DHS took over half of these Regional honors including five Regional Championships: Chan Cheam and Levi Daugherty in Duo Interpretation, returning state champions Zane Arnold and Matt Ballard in Improv Duo, Hannah Draut in Program Oral Interpretation, Grace Sheene in Prose, and Lydia Graham in Storytelling.

The KHSSL State Speech Tournament will be held March 11 and 12 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. DANVILLE FIRST AT BLYTON Danville High School took first at the Gifford Blyton Scholarship Speech and Debate Tournament held at the University of Kentucky January 30. Seventeen schools competed in the contest with Henry Clay, Rowan County, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Ryle, and North Oldham finishing second through sixth. Twenty-eight DHS entries advanced to the top six, or awards rounds, in their individual events including five of the six awards given for Program Oral Interpretation. Danville High placed first of fifteen teams at the Harlen Hamm Memorial Speech Tournament held Saturday, January 7, in Morehead. Lexington Henry Clay, Michigan's Midwest Speech and Debate, Boone County, LaRue County, and Louisville Assumption rounded out the top six teams overall. Twenty-five DHS entries advanced into awards rounds with first place finishes from seniors Zane Arnold (Congressional Debate) and Hannah Draut (Program Oral Interpretation) and junior Abigail Anderson (Broadcasting). Danville High School placed second at the Western Kentucky University Hilltopper

Classic Speech Tournament held in Bowling Green December 12. Schools from six

states participated in the annual contest. Defending Kentucky state champions

Rowan County won the meet with Danville second, Midwest (MI) third, Ravenwood

(TN) fourth, Battle Ground Academy (TN) fifth, and Murray High School sixth in team

awards.

Nine Danville entries advanced to the final round, or top six, after three rounds of

preliminary competition: Hannah Draut, third in Program Oral Interpretation and fifth

in Prose; Celeste Fieberg, sixth in Program Oral Interpretation; Greg Goldie, fifth in

Impromptu Speaking and sixth in Prose; Lydia Graham, third in Storytelling; Charlie

Hall, first in Storytelling and second in Declamation; Grace Sheene, second in

Dramatic Interpretation.

Danville High took top honors of seventeen schools on Saturday (December 5) at the

Ryle High School portion of the Blizzard Blowout Swing held in Union, Kentucky.

Twenty-four DHS entries placed in the top six of all entries in thirteen speech events

held in the meet. Lexington Henry Clay, Boone County, Beechwood, Rowan County,

and LaRue County finished second through sixth in the team awards.

The Danville High School forensics team hosted fifteen schools in the twenty-second

annual Tournament of Firsts at DHS on Saturday, November 21. Rowan County took

top team honors at the contest followed by Boone County, LaRue County,

Beechwood, Knott County Central, and Bethlehem. Host school DHS did not compete

in speech events but did field entries in Congressional Debate, taking five of the top

DHS WINS BEECHWOOD

Danville High School won the Beechwood Tiger Invitational Speech Tournament held Saturday (11-14-15) in Fort Mitchell. The team came home with twenty-three individual honors including tournament champions in Declamation and Oratory. Boone County, LaRue County, Scott, Harrison County, and Kentucky Country Day placed second through sixth in the team contests with students competing in thirteen speech and one debate category at the meet. The Danville High School Forensics team took second in Speech and brought home twenty-six trophies at its first outing of the year, the Lexington Dunbar Bulldog Invitational. With only twenty-three of its members competing, the Speaking Admirals placed three points behind Lexington Henry Clay and nearly a hundred points ahead of third place Beechwood in the speech tournament.
