OVERVIEW

With a population of 46 million, Colombia is the third-largest country in Latin America, after Brazil and Mexico. This diverse and relatively advanced country has enjoyed a long tradition of economic and political stability and currently has the 33rd largest economy in the world.

Included in the group of new emerging markets (CIVETS) alongside Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt, Turkey and South Africa, Colombia is one of 19 priority markets for the UK around the world and the government aims to double bilateral trade by 2015.

Historically, Colombia has looked to the US for new products and technology but more recently Europe has been seen as an interesting alternative. Although trade is relatively small, UK investment in Colombia has been of significant interest and there are numerous opportunities for British companies in many sectors, with our principal export categories being pharmaceuticals, chemicals, machinery and beverages. Primary commodities such as crude oil, coal, coffee and non-ferrous metals remain Colombia’s main exports.

TRADE INFORMATION ESSENTIAL CUSTOMS INFORMATION

Importers must be registered under the RUT-Registro unico Tributario.

The commercial invoice must declare the complete shipper’s and consignee information, Incoterms® 2010 rules, currency of origin, date and invoice number.

Colombian Customs require that all invoices are declared in USD.

All shipments that exceed either 50kg or USD 2000 or 6 items of the same commercial reference coming to San Andres Islas (ADZ), cannot be transported through the DHL Network due to Colombian Customs Regulations. If a shipment arrives, ALL costs will be charged back to origin and will be returned.

If the weight or value are below that range, it will have an extra charge of USD 200

Weight over 50kg – an authorised broker is required. Original commercial invoices, consignee tax ID, PoA/Import licence are required.
