Today, Beirut built landscape is the result of the countrys geopolitical situation and tormented political tensions. Violence that constantly bears traces on the citys building skins, hollowing them up in various forms. Leaving out concrete skeletons invaded with nature, changing ones conception of what a faade `opening may mean and blurring the boundary between the `articulated window and the one carrying the memory of a `violent event. This state of building juxtaposed with the few remaining traditional tiled roof houses and the concrete mass of identical modern constructions holds us into a strange state of euphoric melancholia. Together they constitute a `real landscape, an almost `natural one. Stone Gardens is the materialization of this situation in Beirut. Materialization into a built form of life and death, presence and absence, evanescence and timelessness, beauty and rawness Located near the industrial port of Beirut, the project takes over the site where the first concrete company was established in the middle east, where a famous Lebanese architect has once located his office, where he has died, where his son, a photographer of renown took over the land to put into life a new project, demolishing the existing building and opening it up for a `new being. In this context, the emerging building physically dialogues with this invariable absence and presence. The emerging residential project is conceived as a massive sculpture, a direct translation of the building law announcing the death of architectural form. It assumes the rawness of its textured concrete and addresses the substantial act of `faade opening in Beirut. Hence, its openings embody the dialectic seen in the city, they are not merely viewing frames of various heights, they constitute mass - subtractions expressing the violence of the energy intruding them inwards to become enjoyable inner `balconies. But the absence becomes life; they allow for unique dwelling on each of the floors and inhabit with their various scales different types of gardens to live in and to invade the building. This leaves to nature the possibility to constantly transform the architecture of this intervention.

DGT received the First prize in the invited competition that shorlisted 10 internationals teams as Massimiliano Fuksas and others. The 8 500m office building for IPES is operated CO2-free as the heating and cooling comes from geothermal groundwater and solar panels - without the use of fossil fuels. Good thermal insulation and the use of heat pumps keep low the operating costs of what would be the first carbon-neutral wooden multi-storey building in Italy.Since last march Bolzano city started to implement the EU project Sinfonia planning to become the first european Smart City thanks to the partnership between EURAC, Comune di Bolzano, Istituto per ledilizia sociale (IPES), Agenzia CasaClima e Societ elettrica altoatesina (SEL).

This typically Parisian appartment renovation located in the north of the XVI th arrondissement in Paris is a unique project. The clients desire meets DGT architectural curiosity and audacity. In charge of the complete interior renovation DGT conceived a unique place where Art and everyday life are mixed, where piece of Art get perfectly hightlighted. To head this goal DGT recreated the original structure of the appartment by deleting all the superficial partition walls. Then 4 different spaces emerged : the lobby (emphasized by the absence of natural light reinforced by the use of dark materialsand totally dedicated to piece of art that are displayed in this room), the living room (clear and white thanks to 3 large windows), the office (an in-betwwen where intimacy is linked to Art, here thinking and contemplation are free to be) and the bedroom and bathroom that are like niches digged into the structure of the appartment creating a new feeling of cocoon offering unique experiment.

La table en acier longue de 7 mtres souligne la perspective7m steel table giving a surface of length in the long room
The creation of a new leather boutique for the designer Johnny Farah was a private commission for DGT in 2006. Located in the heart of the Marais, a district of Paris, the showroom joined the family of the designers other stores in New York, Dubai and Beirut. Johnny Farah is a leather artisan. His pieces - handbags, shoes, belts and jewelry - celebrate the natural beauty of leather - its natural grain and subtle inconsistencies. He pays close attention to detail, using precise tools to enhance the simplicity of his designs and the intricacies of his craft. DGT designed the space of the showroom to compliment and highlight these qualities of the items on display. Materials were chosen which have an embodied richness a rawness and strength. A 7m long raw metal table stands lightly on a dark gray concrete floor. Paralleled by a solid wood piece, the table is presented against the backdrop of a red wall formed using wooden panels from the ruined scaffolding of Parisian building facades. The space, and the natural leather objects within, emulate an earthy character and recall emotive colours and textures.

Located on the historical traces of the old hospital of Broussais in the 14th district of Paris, between the street Mariniers and the street Didot, this student residence project is to be implemented in a plot with 350 housing unit to be developed in a mixed and rapidly growing neighborhood. The project site is also close to Little Belt of Paris - La petite ceinture, the old rails of train, it is bordered by this green under rehabilitation space and an old boiler kept on site to become a cultural center. Its privileged situation is compounded by the importance of its visibility from public spaces and new equipment. It is noticeable from far away and must actively participate in the architectural renewal of the neighborhood. In this context, the project of the student residence must play an important role in the definition and the success of the public square located near the boiler, the building extending and ending the `greenway promenade. DGT proposes an intervention that stands first and foremost as an identifiable building with a facade acting as a public screen, a background standing behind and detaching the boiler, thus defining the plaza and the cultural centre. The volume of the proposed project is a direct translation of the citys urban regulations - aligning with the contexts building and allowing the boiler to leave its trace on the mass where the prospect lines require subtracting from this volume. An inclined invisible plane cuts into the main faade and becomes the generator of a twist in the public space. It invites students and the public eye to access the generous entrance of the project in order to access the unfolded stairs articulated from within the residence and leading out into higher levels opening up onto the city. This creates easily appropriable `external spaces: balconies on the southern extensions projecting towards the front of the building. This extension of the public space into a common student meeting spaces is complemented by opening the building to the chimney of the boiler allowing private dwellings at the rear of the residence to enjoy a visual and spatial relief to the boiler.

During the 1960s building boom a quest for modernity inspired a style of architecture which was embraced across continents. The Carlton Hotel on Beiruts waterfront was one such expression of this common goal. It was an impressive building - the first hotel in the area -towering above its neighbours. It represented a dream of a future with time and opportunity for leisure and travel and the hundreds of young Lebanese who were married by its azure pool chose this location for their special day, not only for the sheer impressiveness of the architecture but also for the hope it inspired. However times have changed. Beirut has embraced the new global wave that of mass development and maximum density. The outmoded Carlton Hotel is to be demolished and replaced by a residential block. For the international competition DGT proposed a project which achieved a harmony between a sensitive architectural approach which sought to celebrate the memory and spirit of the old hotel and the demanding requirements for efficient land usage and maximum dwelling units. The form of the old hotel remains, now as the negative space surrounded by the new residential building. This void becomes a lush green garden, which appears to continue up and into the apartments via their vegetated balconies. To the seafront the building reaches the maximum permissible height, enabling all residents a framed view to the ocean beyond. Its perforated faade and pockets of open space encourage cool sea breezes to permeate the building and allow it to breath. To the rear, communal facilities and parking are placed in the shaded zone. From this approach the building appears fragmented, as if still under construction, echoing the continually changing nature of the city itself.

Within Lebanon, Beirut is a dense urban metropolis, full of life, a hub of culture and social events, but increasingly devoid of open green spaces within the city boundary. Venturing out of Beirut towards the mountains yet with a very close access to the cities life, you will find Beirut Village, a new development home to pockets of lush, bountiful greenery set around an expansive and unique park setting in the heart of Hazmieh. Beirut village provides the easy access to the city dynamics with a quality of environment that is lacking in central Beirut, and it is this difference in quality that DGT wishes to accentuate and put center stage of their project. Located on Block11 of this residential development, DGT project is conceived to act as a vessel for the environment, whereby it embraces the garden into its heart and carries it further over its surface, creating a fully site integrated volume. From within the boundaries of its serpentine structure, elevated views are afforded to each of the apartments over the main park and cityscape. These views are harnessed by the volumetric of this form in such a way that a diverse range of environments can be created within all of its parts. This variety of relationships between the living and natural environments strengthens the personal relationship between occupant and site through their conceived individuality. The building allows a uniqueness of living and experience into each of its dwellings that become identifiable homes.

Vue arienne du projetAerial View of the project
Situated on the south coast of Beirut, Jnah beach knew its f irst heydays in the 30s, when it became the favorite spot of the bourgeoisie and powerful men of the capital. At the outset of the war, the beach changed its face as its bungalows became the asylum of refugees and poor people of the south-western suburbs. Nowadays, Jnah beach knows a revival, renewing the magic and the opulence of his past. Taking advantage of this momentum, the developer STOW has launched a competition to design a luxury residential complex including vil las, a marina and an hotel resort. His ambition is to emphasize the exceptional setting offered by a site of 35 000 m, stepping down to a sandy beach and the Mediterranean Sea. DGTs proposal seeks to reveal the magic potential of this geography. Approaching the site on a boat, the project reveals itself as a natural phenomenon. It is mysteriously shaped as a cut in the steep clif f in which it is located. While the vil las appear as a series of bril liant-cut crystals through a veil of greenery, the hotel and condominium recall the ruggedness of a white marble quarry ref lecting in the deep blue sea.

Located on the eastern coast of Tunisia, Sousse is the Capital of the Tunisian Sahel. It owes its nickname Pearl of the Sahel to the mildness of its climate, its calm and beautiful coast and the hospitality of its people, that have long captivated those who came to conquer. Considered as one of the best examples of seaward-facing fortifications built by the Arabs, today the city continues its development, pushed by land scarcity, economical boom and the success of tourism. It is in this context that DGT has been invited to propose a future development for the main train-station area, including a dense program of commercial, offices and accommodation areas, as well as sports and amusement equipments ; a program that allows this site to become a real urban generator and heart in the city. Based on a precise urban study, DGT proposal is built as an intersection of the different urban fabrics around. Buildings, stairways and corridors, gardens and planted roofs, responding to the city scale, constitute the base of the project, from which emerges gradually a beacon-like tower nearly soaring 300m high. Echoing the traditional forms that make the countrys cultural wealth, the tower resolutely displays a contemporary picture with its skin glistening like the scales of a sea creature.

ETUDE URBAINE POUR LA VILLE DISHINOMAKII S H I N O M A K I U R B A N R E S E A R C H
Making / Reconstructing
-
This project brief is a master plan proposal for the reconstruction of Ishinomaki, which is a response to the Great Earthquake which occured on the eastern side of Japan on March 11th 2011. The primary aim is to research a possible sustainable approach for Ishinomaki and to think of ways to reconstruct after the tsunami disaster, in a longer perspective as well as a global vision. The second is to propose a masterplan based on the preliminary research. In fact, by take in to account for the Ishinomaki reconstruction planning by the city authority which can be clarifed and be possible to appropriate by the Ishinomaki local charactaristics. Reconstructing Ishinomaki needs a long-term effort to rebuild the city. At the same time, Ishinomaki construction is to think in advance, not only to reconstruct after the disater but also to think of the city where people live together. The proposed masterplan will introduce the city in a new scale that could provide the city with a more comfortable, humanized and diverse richness for its inhabitants which could in turn appropriate an inherent identity and contextural environment for Ishinomaki.
