2012 Great Futures Start Here
Annual Benefit: Invitations
were mailed and we are
contacting sponsors to get their
program ads, their guest lists,
and to encourage committed
sponsors to make their
payments. If you’d like to make
your payment online, visit
www.bgchv.com/greatfutures.
We have been working hard on
auction night materials like the
program book, signage, etc. We
are preparing to build hundreds
of auction baskets and boards.
This is a perfect time to make an
auction item donation, so if you
have any bottles of wine,
unused gift certificates or
something you’d like to “regift” to
the Club sitting at home, please
bring them in.
Marketing: We hired a new
graphic designer this month,
Michelle King. She has more
than 10 years of experience and
we are excited to have her as
part of our team. In addition to
the auction’s many design
needs, we have been working
on a several program side
marketing activities as well. We
distributed back to school flyers
to all 30 schools we serve. We
distributed Twilight flyers to all
the English Language Learner
students in targeted areas of
Fountain Valley and Huntington
Beach School Districts. We also
submitted our ad to the Fountain
Valley Pen and the Boys & Girls
Clubs in Orange County’s ad to
the Orange County Business
Journal. We sent out a
promotional email to more than
5,000 parents regarding our fall
programs. We sent out press
releases about our fall programs
and the opening of the Oak View
site. The Oak View press
release was picked up by
several local newspapers,
including the Orange County
Register and the Huntington
Beach Independent. Links to
the articles can be found
on our facebook page at
www.facebook.com/bgchv. We
also began participating in
Festival of Children at South
Coast Plaza. For the next two
weeks we have a booth near
Rainforest Café at the mall to
help promote the Club’s fall
programs and instructional
classes.
Oak View Activities: We
developed registration and
promotional materials for our
new Oak View Branch and
incorporated the Oak View
branch into some of our existing
pieces, like staff shirts. We sent
a preliminary proposal to the
Huntington Beach Police
Officers Association to ask them
to consider support of the Oak

Program for their 2013 golf
tournament. We also set up free
snacks for the children at the
Oak View Branch through
Second Harvest Food Bank.
They will make a weekly delivery
of healthy snack foods so that
the kids can have good food to
eat every afternoon. The
agreement allows for growth, so
there will always be afterschool
snacks for every child.
Other activities: The new Habit
Burger in Huntington Beach is
donating the proceeds of a pre-
opening lunch event to the Club.
We helped promote it by sending
an eblast, sharing information on
facebook and twitter, and
handing out flyers to our
members. We expect to get
about $1,000 in proceeds from
the event. We submitted our
application to the Toys for Tots
program so that we will have toys
for our holiday party. We also
s u b m i t t e d a r e p o r t t o
GlobalGiving, which is an online
charity donation portal that
features our capital campaign.
It is hard to believe that in only
4 days, Boys & Girls Clubs of
Huntington Valley was able to
transform a classroom, gym and
outdoor areas into kid-friendly
space. We started by replacing
the older carpet in the hallway
and classroom with new tile and
baseboards. We continued by
patching walls, scraping ceilings
and adding fresh paint to the
areas where we will be
delivering programs. We added
a donated flat screen TV, new
microwave, DVD player, printer/
copier and a 16 foot counter top
to hold the six brand new
laptops donated by Toshiba. A
major part of the transformation
included cleaning and sorting as
we sifted through boxes of
supplies. Five truck-loads to the
dump later, we were on track.
The Club was thrilled and
amazed to find the extensive
supplies hidden within the
cabinets. Everything from art
supplies to sports equipment,
much of it in new condition, was
discovered and put away. The
changes continued as we
cleaned the gym and added the
familiar “Boys Club BLUE” stripe
around the perimeter walls of
the gym. The change was
instant. Next, we then headed
outside to begin the clean-up of
the concrete areas. Much graffiti
removal followed by eight
hours of power washing made a
dent, but didn’t do what we
wanted, so a commercial hot
steam clean-up is scheduled for
next week.
With the support of the City of
HB, 4 recycled plastic picnic
tables were purchased for us to
assemble and secure creating a
new outside play space where
program participants can enjoy
activites and snacks. The club
also purchased and assembled

Summer has flown by at the
Kingston Branch and our
members were busy and
engaged with fun and engaging
club activities, field trips, and
summer programs. We had our
end of the Summer Water
Carnival which was a huge
success! Over 250 members
attended and enjoyed sliding on
a 16ft water slide AKA “The
Wave.” They also enjoyed our
giant slip & slide, water balloon
toss competition, duck, duck
splash, and so much more. It
was a fun-filled day that our
members really enjoyed with all
new friendships they made
during their summer at the Boys
& Girls Clubs.
Our Summer programs ended
with great accomplishments
from all members, but especially
our teens. The Orange County
Coastkeeper’s teamed up with
our teens to learn how flood
contro l channels , water
treatment plants, and nature
reserves were all connected.
Throughout the summer the
teens tested our local water
channels, visited our local water
treatment plant and finally took a
fieldtrip to the Bolsa Chica Wet
Lands. On the fieldtrip, they
teamed up with the Huntington
Beach Branch and had a beach
cleanup. Also, 5 of our teens
participated in the 3rd Annual
Taco Bell Graduate to Go
Business Camp. This camp was
an interactive workshop for our
teens that allowed them to
create a product for Taco Bell
and participate in a number of
activities designed to cover a
w i de r an ge o f ca r ee r
opportunities. Some of the
activities included: product
deve lopme n t , f i nan c ing ,
operations, and marketing.
As summer came to an end we
quickly prepared for our fall
programs. We are very
excited to see familiar faces
and new members join our
program. We look forward
to the start of all of our
excit ing school year
programs again for our
members to enjoy!
September was a great start to
a new school year, about 30 pre
-k children all left ready to enter
kindergarten! Open pre-k spots
were f i l led by chi ldren
graduating to the next age
a p p r o p r i a t e c l a s s r o o m .
Enrollment is continuous with
frequent inquires and tours. The
children have been adjusting to
their new classrooms and
teachers. Staff have been busy
documenting and observing
each child so that individual
needs can be added to lesson
plans starting in October.
September 28th we will hold our
annual “Parent Orientation
Night” which will give parents
the opportunity to sit down with
staff and go over classroom
expectations and goals for their
children. Children have been
working on art projects and self
portraits that will decorate the
room for this night. Pre-K
children have started on school
readiness by incorporating the
letter of the week, counting, and
name recognition.
Learning Center Child Development Preschool, FV The end of August and
beginning of September kept us
busy as we conducted tours and
enrolled new students at the
Learning Center. On August 29
we celebrated our first year
anniversary with an Ice Cream
Social event. It was well
attended and we were able to
say “Good-Bye” to our Pre-K
children. We started the new
school year on the good side
with four out of our six
classrooms at full capacity and
our Infant/Toddler classrooms
have a waiting list. We are in
the third week of September and
we are still conducting tours and
enrolling children. On Friday,
September 28, we will be having
our Open House and Parent
Orientation Night and we are
thrilled to be starting of the new
school year on the right side.

Over the course of the summer
we had a wonderful opportunity to
partner with the Orange County
Coastkeepers. The O. C.
Coastkeepers is a non-profit
organization that works with local
organizations such as schools
and clubs like ours to educate our
local children on the local
watersheds and our impact on it.
The program consisted of three
classroom and three field trip
components. The field trips were
to a local flood control channel to
do water testing, a water
treatment plant to see how the
water is reclaimed, and finally we
went to the Bolsa Chica
Wetlands to see the wildlife and
how it depends on our local
watershed. All of the classroom
sessions were introductions to
the field trips which was dynamic
to gaining knowledge about this
program. This program was
specifically designated for our
teens and would
have been great
for our younger
children as well.
This was truly a
highlight for our
teens and has
left a lasting
impression on
the way they
look at their environment.
As always we finish our
summer off with a huge
celebration called our water
carnival. The carnival consists of
a forty-foot waterslide, dunk tank,
slippyslider, and snow cones for
everyone. Our children had an
absolute blast at the carnival and
it was the perfect culmination to a
great summer.
ClubHouse Academy, Fountain Valley September marked the end of
the summer sports seasons.
Our basketball finals were full of
excitement and great play.
These finals really demonstrated
the skills our kids developed
over the season. We had a
dramatic finish in our division 4
final that went into double
overtime, but even under all the
pressure the coaches and
p l a y e r s s h o w e d g r e a t
sportsmanship. Our soccer
season finished in just as
dramatic fashion. In division 2,
regular time and overtime was
not enough to decide a winner
and we had to go to penalty
kicks to decide our champion.
We will be holding our
evaluations at the start of
October and begin games
towards the end of October for
our fall season.
At the ClubHouse Academy
we began our fall class
schedule. We added many
theater classes with our new
Theat re Manager , Pau l
McGlinchy. These classes will
help introduce many of our
members to theatre as well as
help some of our seasoned
performers improve their skills.
The theatre program has
kicked off their production “Lady
Pirates of Captain Bree.” We will
continue shows the next two
weekends. Show times are
Fridays at 7:00, Saturdays at
2:00pm and 7:00pm and
S u n d a y s a t 2 : 0 0 p m .
On October 7th, after the
last performance all the
casts will come together
for a cast party to
celebrate their hard work
and great performances.

Page 4 Oak View Branch to OPEN on October 1, 2012 (continued from Page 1) two rolling metal racks where
backpacks can be stored since
the kids come to us directly from
school. The final work will
happen in the next few months
as we observe needs and
contunue to make improvements
including the constructtion of a
shade structure to cover the
picnic tables. We have made
some significant changes and
the kids and community noticed!
Officially we take over on
October 1st. To make the
transition seamless we have had
staff present since last week.
They are meeting the kids and
talking to parents. Last week we
attended two open house events
at the adjacent Oak View
Elementary School and passed
out fliers about our program.
The first night was only for K-2
grade parents. The two staff
members present were very
overwhelmed by the intensity of
the interest. Gricel, Kingston’s
Unit Director was one of our
staff onsite. She happened to
bring with her a pad of paper to
take notes and/or write down
parent questions. One parent
listed their name and phone
number on the paper and
suddently 75 other parents
followed. In a short time, the
200+ fliers we brought to
distribute were gone. At the
second open house for grades
3rd to 5th, we were more
prepared. Everyone repeated,
“THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB IS
COMING TO OAK VIEW!”
It’s great to be wanted!
