Hydraulics Where surface water sewers are proposed for adoption we require hydraulic calculations from a digital modelling software package See Sewers For Adoption 6th edition page 28 figure 213

Key Points

Design storm requirements bull No surcharge within the system in a 1 in 2

year Rank 1 storm event bull There is no flooding from the system

in a 1 in 30 year Rank 1 storm (against a surcharged outfall)

bull Please note the only pipe length expected to surcharge in the design storm is pipe downstream of the flow control manhole

Checking the simulation data and criteria bull Contributing impermeable areas (hard

standing areas) bull M5-M60 and Ratio Rndash Check Table of

hydraulics bull MADD Factor ndash No higher than 2

bull The cover and invert levels pipe lengths pipe diameter pipe gradients and contributing areas are consistent across all drawings

bull Online controls (flow control manholes ndash design head and pass forward flow)

bull Pond storage details are correct bull No private drainage lengths included

within network details

Impermeable areas Each impermeable area should represent a unique colour for the drainage area a

key should also be shown detailing the PN number and impermeable area in hectares

Hydraulics continued

Page 7

Key Points

Standards to be checked within the results of the simulations

bull The results should show that the pipe velocities achieve a self-cleansing velocity

bull That high velocities are avoided (in excess of 4ms) - risk of scouring and erosion to benching and river banks

Additional check bull The water levels within the adoptable

manholes listed isnrsquot greater than any private drainage cover levels (for example where houses are lower than the relative level of the road)

1m Surcharge bull A 1m surcharge is to be applied to the soffit

of the receiving sewer with the 30yr storm simulated showing no flooding

Flood Routing bull A flood routing plan is required to support

your application showing that the layout and landscaping of the site aims to route water away from any vulnerable property National Planning Policy Framework usually explains that no flooding of properties should occur as a result of a one in 100 year storm event (including an appropriate allowance for climate change)

Pumping Station continued

Key Points

General comments Pumping Station location requires careful

consideration ideally away from SUDS features or watercourses Wet wells must be a minimum

distance from any habitable building as per SFA 7th table D1 page 62 with the clearance shown

on the drainage plan A note adjacent to the station should be

provided showing 1) PS Type 2) Well depth 3) Well diameter 4) Fencing type and height 5) Confirmation of Emergency Storage location

6) All electrical equipment should be sited above the 200 year storm level

Rising Main details Rising main specification must be shown on the drainage plan inlcluding

material diameter SDR rating Rising Main Bends Slow Long radius bends should be used avoiding sharp bends If thrust

blocks are required we require supporting calculations

Apparatus on Rising Mains Washout Air Valves (low points high points) must be shown on the drainage drawing and on the long section

Break Chamber The rising main should be kept to the minimum possible distance and

must terminate into a break chamber followed by a minimum 5m length of gravity sewer and a

connection at the soffit level of the existing sewer

Tanker Swept Path Analysis drawing showing an 8 wheel tanker can sufficiently and safely

turn then achieve a reverse manoeuvre into the compound and safely drive out

Key Points

It is essential that thorough site investigation is undertaken as early as possible to avoid any

potential issues with new sewers

A full detailed SI report including trial pit borehole logs must be provided with a

Section 104 submission

Should you encounter challenging ground conditions (for example peat running sand or a fluctuating water table) you should provide

detailed information to justify your design proposals

Trial pit boreholes should be taken to a depth beneath the proposed invert level of any new

sewers to be laid

Should any planting be proposed adjacent to sewers these must conform to figure 23

page 33 SFA 6th

Sewers should be positioned to avoid TPO areas

bull Should your surface water sewers outfall to a watercourse please see Technical Guidance

Flood Routing bull A flood routing plan is required to support

your application showing that the layout and landscaping of the site aims to route water away from any vulnerable property National Planning Policy Framework usually explains that no flooding of properties should occur as a result of a one in 100 year storm event (including an appropriate allowance for climate change)

standing areas) bull M5-M60 and Ratio Rndash Check Table of

hydraulics bull MADD Factor ndash No higher than 2

bull The cover and invert levels pipe lengths pipe diameter pipe gradients and contributing areas are consistent across all drawings

bull Online controls (flow control manholes ndash design head and pass forward flow)
