In creative heads and on broad shoulders
„Professional mountain guides, who guide their clients 200 days a year, give us feedback that would take your ordinary outdoor enthusiast ten years to accumulate.” MIGUEL TIBLAS, PRODUCT MANAGER
Whether it is on the North Face of the Eiger or
a family outing, climbing Nanga Parbat or bik-
ing the Trans-Alp, it all begins with an idea. Big
ideas, however, can only be turned into reality
with the right kind of equipment. Hans Deuter’s
mission to create the perfect rucksack began
back in 1898. Today, the likes of Anderl and An-
di Heckmair, Hermann Buhl and Gerlinde Kalten-
brunner represent the countless mountaineers,
climbers, hikers and mountain bikers that have
turned their dreams into reality with Deuter.
Over the past 112 years, Deuter has experienced
natural growth spurts such as the first back ven-
tilation system in the 30’s, the Aircomfort system
introduced in 1984 or the first bike rucksack in
1990, as well as periods of careful and consid-
ered maturity, where systematic improvements
were made.
Even now, in the third millennium, each new
addition to the Deuter family is not conceived
behind a desk but rather exactly where it will
spend the rest of its life – in the outdoors.
Deuter creations are born in the minds of peo-
ple who spend their life in the outdoors – in the
minds of our collection experts, the athletes in
our SL team and the numerous mountain guides
from the „German Association of Mountain and
Ski Guides”.
After careful nurturing, the youngest members
of the Deuter family – the new Furtura and AC
Lite rucksacks – are now ready to fledge.

HIKINGDeuter Back Systems
4 back systems
Deuter Aircomfort SystemOn small to medium backpacks we go for maximum ventila-tion. Getting a sweaty back whilst hiking really belongs to the past. The Aircomfort System’s special airy mesh ensures
that moist air can escape from three directions, preventing heat build up. For comfort, there are soft ventilation pads between the shoulder blades and on the hips as well as ergonomically shaped hip fins. In larger volume models, the Aircomfort Pro System combines clever mesh back ventilation with superb load transfer. A flexible, lightweight round spring steel frame forms the new foundation for the pivoting Vari Flex hip fins. They follow the wearer’s movement and provide a super comfortable fit. The new Aircomfort Vario Pro System completes this high tech carrying system with its stepless, quick and easy Vari Fit back adjustment system. Aircomfort FlexLite’s combination of complimentary round and flat frame profiles of spring steel guarantees fantastic carrying comfort. All Aircom-fort systems share one thing: They reduce perspiration for sports men and women thereby reducing the strain on their circulation and giving them greater stamina. According to findings from the acclaimed Hohen-stein Institute, scientific evidence suggests that optimal back ventilation reduces moisture loss by up to 25%.
Good backpack ventilation reduces perspiration which helps to lower the skin temperature. This re¬duces the average pulse rate and reduces blood pressure. So reducing perspiration increases per¬formance – and who wants to do without that! Deuter has developed special systems for the various sport categories, which perfectly match to the particular demands. They are all based on effective ventilation for a more comfortable back even with high physical exertion. In larger volume models pivoting Vari Flex hip fins moreover provide flexible, energy saving comfort.

TREKKING PROTECTIONALPINE BIKEDeuter Aircontact System Deuter Alpine Back System Deuter Airstripes System Deuter Shield System
5back systems
The easiest way to carry heavy loads is to combine the backpack and your bo-dy together into one unit. This is exact-
ly what the Aircontact principle of our trekking back-packs is about: a body contact system with perfect stability, exact load dispersion and effective ventilati-on. With every movement, a pump effect circulates air through the special breathable hollow chamber foam Aircontact cushions. The air channels between these cushions increases ventilation effect. The Aircontact and Aircontact Pro with pivoting Vari Flex hip fins also provide flexible, energy saving comfort, which is es-pecially important where heavy loads are concerned. The result: up to 15% less sweating as with a stan-dard trekking backpack. Proved in Tests conducted by Gabriel L.&T.
For alpine backpacks the combinati-on of comfort, durability, functionality at high weight efficiency is important.
Especially in rugged terrain a backpack, which is too heavy and complicated is more vulnerable to failure, and is a hazard. The Deuter Alpine Back System with the two softstripe-back pads mould themselves ana-tomically to the back. The back system offers light-weight flexibility to comfortably follow your body mo-vements. Between the 3D Airmesh covered soft back stripes an air channel ventilates the back. The result: compact load transfer and secure car-rying performance with comfortable ventilation.
In every biking situation a bike pack must sit securely on your back. Our unique Airstripes System takes care of that and
offers effective ventilation. It consists of two contou-red foam profiles which have many air channels, co-vered with a highly breathable mesh. While riding, a "chimney effect" is generated between the foam pro-files that enhances the ventilation. The bilaminate construction with harder and softer foam layers gu-arantees flexibility and more comfortable load distri-bution. The result: the minimal contact surface area of the profiled Airstripes allows free air circulation over 80% of the riders back.
The main purpose of our Shield System is to mini-
mise, or even, to a large extent, prevent, injury oc-curring during risk sports. Tested by the TÜV Product Service in accordance with the industry guidelines for personal safety equipment, the system carries both TÜV-GS and CE certification. The sophisticated Multi Layer Construction consists of viscose-elastic SC-1 foam and a closed-cell foam delivers excellent shock absorption and provides the basis for the pro-tective function. Soft foam in the outer layers provi-des good carry comfort and ventilation during swea-ty activitities. The typical V-shape of the construc-tion covers the sensitive areas of the back, whilst retaining the pack’s outstanding freedom of move-ment. The Shield System is incorporated into the Ra-zor, Edge, Venom and Attack models. The result: the TÜV-GS tested back system com-bines a comfortable carry, outstanding ventilation in the free spaces between the padding and maximum safety in the event of a fall.

[man’s fit ]
On average, women's backs are not quite as long as men's. The SL carry system is thus slightly shorter than that of Deu-
ter's standard rucksacks. Conse quently, the models in the SL series are the ideal choice, too, for male users with shorter
backs.
This conical form is achieved by angling the belt di-agonally upwards and by
curving the SL waist belt wings. The frontal adjuster system feature of our larger volume rucksacks simpli-
fies the waist belt fitting procedure.
In order to give a perfect anatomic fit around the upper body, the SL shoulder straps are both narrower and shorter in length.
To take account of the narrower shoulder width of the female anat-omy, and thus prevent slippage, the SL shoulder straps are both narrower and shorter in length.
In general, the female waist and hip area is also shaped different-ly, so in order for the waist belt to deliver a perfect anatomic fit when fastened, it should ideally have a conical shape.
Soft edges to the straps, smaller buck-les and narrow tapered strap ends pre-
vent the SL shoulder straps from chafing under the arms and eliminate pressure
points in the chest area.

PackingThe pack’s center of gravity should sit close to the body and ide-ally at shoulder height. This way it is positioned over the body’s center of gravity and the pack won’t pull backwards. Therefore, put heavy equipment such as tent, food, big jackets close to the back in about shoulder height. Place sleeping bag, down equipment and other light objects in the bottom compartment; and midweight gear such as clothing on the top towards the outside. For easy grab, get small, often-used items in the lid pocket. Minimise the number of items you strap to the pack’s outside and evenly distribute the weight, in particular on the side pockets.
In easy terrain (hiking routes, flat trails) the load’s center of gravity should sit higher, in difficult passages (alpine routes, Via Ferrata) a bit lower and thus closer to the body’s center of gravity. This packing system leads to a more forward leaning position, yet it provides more balance.
Wrong! The pack’s center of gravity sits far from the body’s center of gravity – the backpack pulls backwards forcing the body to constantly work against the pack’s weight. The straps strongly pull on the shoulders and the wearer finds it a lot more difficult to maintain control and balance.
Our rucksacks are designed to fit the average athletic build. However, since not everyone fits the norm it is likely that women's models will fit many male users perfectly well, and vice versa. With larger capacity packs in particular, a perfect fit is crucial and for this reason the Vari-Quick shoulder straps on the regular Deuter rucksacks and children's packs can be easily swapped for SL straps in the event that the original straps are unsui¬table. Conversely, the SL straps on our SL rucksacks can be ex-changed for normal Vari-Quick shoulder straps that are suitable for the user with a more powerful build. For further information, see page 102.
Loosen all straps and put on your backpack.
The shoulder strap anchor point should ideally be positioned between the shoulder blades. Set backpacks with adjustable back-length to the correct height (Vari Quick and Vari Fit System). For small volume Deuter packs choose the right back length (Standard, SL, or EL).
Place the hip belt centrally on your hip bone, fasten and tighten.
Finally, fasten the chest strap to optimise the shoulder strap positioning.
Now tighten the shoulder straps, so that the main weight rests on the hip belt.
For big backpacks, adjust stabiliser and load adjustor straps:tighten > increased stability loosen > increased ventilationVary the load transfer from time to time between waist and shoulder.

The Aircomfort Pro System brings together three key elements which work to full advantage when your dream trip necessitates carrying a bit more gear: top Aircomfort ventilation, flexib-le carry comfort and a comfortable, snug hip belt. The key to this clever combination lies in its frame construction and the floating Vari Flex hip belt. The packs now shine in new colours and fine material. Added to this are the specially tailored SL-shoulder straps and SL hip fins, advantages which will be es-pecially appreciated by female Aircomfort fans.

The name says it all. Like our evergreen models Gröden and Zugspitze, which have been there from the very start, back in 1984, when Deuter revolu-tionised the backpack market with their subsequently much copied, fully ventilated Aircom-fort System for hiking packs. Of course, over the last 27 years Deuter could not resist continuous further development and perfection of their tried and tested original models. Thus, they are still the weapon of choice for hikers of all ages who prefer a classic piece of kit.
