The future of the Percheron Breed in SA has never looked better, with the best
bloodlines available to improve our genetic stock. The direction of the Percheron
horse in SA lies in the hands of the breeders. Our aim should be to breed top quality
horses that will impact positively on the horse market in the country. Top breeding
animals still fetch top prices.

Working with and breeding horses runs in our family. As a young boy, I ploughed with Percherons, fondly called “Kanonpoot perde”, on a farm in Venda land near Levubu in the far Northern Transvaal. When I decided to get involved in breeding, my brother-in-law, Paul Lubbinge, got me interested in concentrating in Percherons and Miniature horses like him-self and my Dad, who breeds Arabians. Needless to say I got totally hooked. On the farm we have 3 studs, 26 Arabian horses, 10 Miniature horses, 4 of which have been imported from America and 6 Percherons, 2 of which I imported from France, 3 have just been imported from America and lastly, Chrystal was locally bred. As far as my “older” Percheron horses are concerned, Crystal is still my favourite. She is locally bred and was awarded the Supreme Champion of Percherons at the Horses of the Year show in 2011. Vanina was the under 3 year mare champion and Victoire came third in the mares class, Chrystal taking first place in this class as well.
I have al-ways been fascinated by big black horses, now I know why as I have found the horses that fit my dream in America.
I am no Percheron
horse expert but was very aware that in order to en-
hance our gene pool, I
would have to look at importing. After writing to the Percheron society in America and explaining that there are only a few
breeders in SA who are importing new blood to boost our local Percheron genes, they fortunately put me in touch with Gerald Allebach of Windermere stud in America, he was very helpful
in getting me top class horses in America.
By Hannes van der Walt,
Sterkfontein Percherons
I have just imported a colt Windermere Wicker who turned 1 year old on 2 May, Lykens Valley Cayla, a mare born on 16 February 2012 and Silvae Krissy born on 20 March 2012. Wicker has been registered as Grey whereas Cayla and Krissy are registered as Black. These are the first black imported Percheron mares into the country. I am sure these horses will make their mark within in the Percheron community with their exceptional genes and my dream and wish is to WOW the South African Horse Society so that these gentle giants get their rightful place and are respected for not only their size but their versatility and gentle na-ture. I found quite a big difference in the appearance of the “American” Percherons vs. the “French” Percheron’s The French horses are much more bulky whereas the horses from America have a more athletic look. This can be seen from photos of Whicker's Sire, Dam and Sister vs. Victoire and Vanina. I love them all the same for their gentle temperament.
I have spent a considerable amount of time and money to get my horses trained so that they can pull carts and they are a pleasure to ride. One needs to be able to use your horses for what they were in-tended to do; this brings pleasure to owner and horse. We are busy upgrading facilities on Lapanzi Farm and we will be able to accommodate 24 people in 4 game lodges on the 2 farms (1000 hectares) and our new stables on Lapanzi will be able to accommodate another 20 horses. My intention is to get people from the city, like myself, to escape to the outdoors with or without their horses and be able to come and enjoy horse riding, carting or just enjoy the farm’s game drives and excellent fishing. Sterkfontein farm is quite popular with the Bass fishing enthusiasts. Visit our farm at http://www.sterkfonteingamefarm.weebly.com

Windermere's Whicker. His sire is Windermere's North American Maid (Moose) current Supreme World Champion and he stands 19 hands. I quote the Windermere’s website. “We started calling North American Maid "Moose" because he was always such a big colt. Now he moves with incredible action. Moose marks the start of a new era of Percheron breeding at Windermere Farms. He is the complete stallion and he is ready to make a mark on the Percheron breed. His impressive front end, quality of bone and extreme size come from both sides of his pedigree. In short, we feel this horse is a living example of what we have been breeding for during the past 30 years. We feel that Moose will take our breeding program and our customers' programs to a level that has not been reached in the Percheron breed. Breed-ers who are looking for a massive, modern stallion but wish to retain their style, quality of bone, and tightness of joints should consider Moose for their mares. We feel Moose is the complete package in a Percheron stallion; one where you can acquire the size to be competitive in the show ring without sacrificing style. Moose had an incredible show season in 2010. It included big wins such as Grand Champion Stallion at KILE, Supreme Champion over all breeds at the MGLI and most importantly, on Oc-tober 21st, 2010 he was crowned Supreme World Champion. His Dam is Wapsi View Fantasy who has won three times at World shows and produced the
World Champion mare Winder-mere's Diedra. Wapsi View Fantasy is one of the most suc-cessful halter mares to ever hit the ring, Wapsi View Fantasy helped put her sire, Windermere King Cong, in the Premier Sire spot for two years. She is an example of quality in motion and is a big mare standing 18.1 hh. She has produced some of the best horses we have ever raised. Fantasy was All-American in 2003. Sadly Wapsi view Fantasy passed away 2 months ago. His sister Windermere's Deidra, “a four time All-American and Supreme World Champion 2008 daughter of Wapsi View Fantasy. “
The pictures of the Mares
speak for themselves consid-ering their age. I trust they will
both be 18 hands plus.

opgewonde gemaak om haar in ons
