Personal branding is, with- out a doubt, the most important aspect of the job search process. Why, you may ask? Because personal branding can be the one thing that sets you apart from other potential hires and allows a company to get a better idea of who you are and what you stand for. Making a connection between your personal brand and the job you want to have is necessary in order to successfully position yourself within the eyes of the company. I think one of the easiest ways to start branding yourself is to curate your social media accounts to portray the ideals in which you be- lieve. By this I mean, post content that reflects your interests and values. For instance, I am a very outdoorsy person, so my social media feeds should be filled with articles on all the activities I enjoy: kayaking, hiking, and swimming. In addition to including your intersts, inclue other information that makes you, you! I would want to include information about my desire to work in the city of Detroit and help rebuild it in every as- pect. I would also want to include information about how I got to my current position, so for me, that would be showing employers that I am a GVSU graduate. In an article from Forbes Maga- zine titled 7 Things You Can Do To Build An Awesome Personal Brand, the author touches on this same idea, saying that your social media posts are a combination of your daily life. Not only does this show employers what you value, but also gives you the potential to bond with them over similar inter- ests. Although posting your views and interests is important, there is a fine line between appropriate and inappropriate posting of this kind of content. It is important to be mindful of what you share, so that you don’t offend or make anyone uncomfortable. Another way to use personal brand- ing to your advantage is to use your professional social media accounts to showcase your skills and accom- plishments. These items could range anywhere from proficiencies with technology to awards you’ve won to job positions you’ve held. These seemingly small details show em- ployers what you’ve done and shows the extent to which you are qualified for the position. In an article from the Brand Your- self website titled The Definitive Guide to Personal Branding, the author talks about how to make yourself get noticed by the right people. The author lists a variety of ways to do this, starting with the need to clean up your social media accounts. For people my age, we grew up with technology and as we grew and advanced, so did it. Young people are not constantly thinking about the future, which poses a huge problem when the future finally comes because their funny posts from years ago could come back to haunt them if their posts included profanity, offensive thoughts, or inappropriate comments. In order to put the past behind you, it is im- perative to go back through your old accounts and delete anything that might stop you from getting a job. After that, you will need to double check that the information about yourself on the Internet is accurate, and if not, find a way to make it accurate.
