Cartagena de Indias is a large Caribbean city on the northern coast of Colombia in the Caribbean

Coast Region and capital of Bolívar Department. The city had a population of 892,545 as of the 2005 census, making it the fifth-largest city in Colombia and giving the Cartagena urban area the status of fifth-largest urban area in Colombia. Cartagena is an important center of economic activity in the Caribbean, as well a popular tourist destination.

BEACHES

Cartagena has a large area of beaches stretching along 19 kilometers and ranging from the beaches of Castillo Grande, El Laguito and Bocagrande to the beaches of Marbella, Crespo, La Boquilla and Manzanillo del Mar. In addition to their sunbath, visitors can practice nautical sports like kite surfing, jet ski, kayak or sailboat.

ISLAS DEL ROSARIO

50 minutes away from Cartagena are the Islas del Rosario, an archipelago consistent of 30 islands and islets, which was considered as one of the most exotic places in the world in 2009.

ISLAND OF TIERRA BOMBA

is made up of the communities of Tierra Bomba, Punta Arena, Caño del Oro and Bocachica. Its best beaches are in Punta Arenas, where you get a privileged view of the city.

BARU ISLAND

Baru Island is an area of 7,000 hectares full of marine flora and fauna. The island can be reached by land or by sea. In the most famous beach on the island, Playa Blanca, named after the color of its sand, you can enjoy popular dishes prepared by fishermen from the nearby villages. You can also do snorkeling in a sea of many colors.

Fifty kilometers southwest of Cartagena, in the Gulf of Morrosquillo, is the archipelago of San Bernardo, which is made up of ten islands. Beautiful beaches, warm water, strong sunlight and reefs full of natural marine paradise prevail.

LA BOQUILLA

Through a journey of 45 minutes by the nozzle can see a variety of red mangroves, black and white typical of this area.

CIÉNAGAS DE LA VIRGEN Y JUAN POLO

A walk through the swamp of Juan Polo lets see different types of migratory birds as thongs, ducks, gulls and gannets. Just as in the Cienaga de la Virgen are mangroves and birds like kingfisher, white heron, night

heron, blue heron, osprey, roseate spoonbill and a variety of crustaceans, molluscs, hummingbirds and iguanas.

TOTUMO VOLCANO

On the way to the ocean, between the cities of Cartagena and Barranquilla, near the town of Galerazamba, known for its salt mines and archaeological finds, is the mud volcano or Volcan del Totumo, recommended for its many medicinal properties

You can get to know the historic center in a traditional horse-drawn coach that takes the visitors to the colonial era, in order to discover different scenarios that represent the city’s history and culture.

RIDE A HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE

A must visit during your stay in Cartagena is the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, the most prominent Spanish military structure in South America. Built in 1,536 and enlarged successively until 1,657. This fortress was a faithful defender of the city during the massive attack by Admiral Vernon in 1741.
