Where is Punta Mita and Why Visit?

Punta Mita (Mita Point), also known as Punta de Mita, forms the exquisite northern gate of Banderas Bay, is often described

as the place where you arrive as a guest, leave as a friend, and return as family. It’s located on mainland Mexico’s tropical

Pacific seaboard whose southern boundary is marked by Cabo (Cape) Corrientes. The 1,500-acre arrowhead privately owned

peninsula of Punta Mita is just a short drive north from the popular resort hub of Puerto Vallarta, which lies at about the heart

of the Bahía de Banderas coast.

Part of the Riviera Nayarit — an increasingly sought-after destination for luxury travel — Punta Mita is a master-planned gated

When is the Best Time to Visit?Thanks to calendar-wide tropic temperatures in the 70s and 80s, there’s really no bad time to visit Punta Mita. It can certainly

be a bit on the steamy side during the summer, but the ocean influence does moderate that sultriness somewhat. Summer also

marks the local wet season, while roughly November through May defines the dry stretch. Here’s our list of some things to do:

SURFINg

Wave riders have long known about such sought-out waves as La Lancha, Punta

Burros, El Faro, El Anclote, Paraiso, Palmitas, and — just about at the very tip

of the Punta de Mita península — Bahía. From beginner to expert, there’s a little

something for everybody, just about anytime of year.

SPORT FISHINg

Showstopper species commonly landed here include sailfish, blue marlin, striped marlin, and those huge black marlin — plus

yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dorado, jack crevalle, Spanish mackerel, bonita, and red snapper.

BEACH-gOINg

The nearly 10-mile-long coastline of Punta Mita proper includes plenty of post-

card-perfect sands, and more await within easy reach in other parts of the Riv-

iera Nayarit and around Puerto Vallarta. Popular local beaches include Anclote,

Bucerias, and Punta Mita Beach, plus the legendary Hidden Beach of the Islas

Marietas National Park archipelago.

ECO-TOURISM

You can catch eco boat tours in both Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita. You’ll also

find outstanding snorkeling and SCUBA diving sites, including Islas Marietas

National Park, El Morro (known for its caves and reef walls), and Los Anegados.

On land there’s hiking, horseback riding, and other excursions into the biodi-

verse heights of the Sierra Madre Occidental. Don’t miss the mangrove won-

derland of the El Cora Crocodile Sanctuary.

Getting There

It’s very easy to get to Punta Mita from the rest of North America. Major airlines such as American, Air Canada, Alaska,

Frontier, Delta, Canjet, US Airways, Virgin, WestJet, United, Sun Country, and Miami Air fly directly into the PVR-Licenciado

gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport in Puerto Vallarta, which is only about a 40-minute drive from Punta Mita.

American and Canadian citizens only need a passport to get into Mexico.
