SERMON BLANKS: fully, physically, spiritual, Come, believes

1. Besides our obvious need for water, is there a certain favorite drink you feel you can't go without enjoying on a daily basis?

2. What are some different ways we try to fill the spiritual thirst inside us? What are some you've tried for yourself, and what did you learn from that attempt?

3. Read John 4:1-42. Describe the woman in this scene. What is she lacking, and how is she trying to fill the void in her life?

4. Why did the woman misunderstand at first what Jesus was telling her? Why did she then throw in a question of intellectual distraction when Jesus pointed out her need for salvation? How do people today respond in the same way?

5. Why do you think Jesus apparently never drank the water even though He asked the woman for it?

6. Notice the reactions of the Samaritans in vv. 39-42. What needs of your heart have you been trying to satisfy in ways other than in Jesus? What do you need to believe after hearing for yourself, like the Samaritans did? What will you be asking of Jesus?

HOME GROUP STUDY

“God made us, and He alone can satisfy us. Said the Lord Jesus, ‘Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst’ (Jn 4:14, emphasis added). Christ alone can quench our thirst. He alone can meet the deep need of our hearts. He alone can impart that peace that the world knows nothing of and can neither bestow nor take away. O reader, once more I would address myself to your conscience. How is it with thee? Have you found that everything under the sun is only vanity and vexation of spirit? Have you discovered that the things of earth are unable to satisfy your heart? Is your soul cry ‘I thirst’? Then, is it not good news to hear there is One who can satisfy you? One we say, not a creed, not a form of religion, but a person—a living, divine person. He it is who says, ‘Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest’ (Matt 11:28). Heed, then, that sweet invitation. Come to Him now, just as you are. Come in faith, believing He will receive you.”
