Relationship Mapping

Carl Pennington

The Value of Trust

"When people honor each other, there is a trust established that leads to synergy, interdependence, and deep respect. Both parties make decisions and choices based on what is right, what is best, what is valued most highly."

--Blaine Lee

Building Trust

Trust is established and sustained by the intentional creation and nurturing of relationships.

Some Guiding Principles

• All in IT (core or edge) are working together to support the missions of IU

• “Leverage” and “edge” are not necessarily defined by geography or services

• Campuses and departments have common goals but unique needs

• The journey to trust is incremental and intentional

• Discussions should include broad representation

• The IT environment should be intelligent, ubiquitous and agnostic (Chuck Aikman)

Desirable Outcomes

• The establishment of common standards and best practices

• A collaborative and collegial environment that encourages open and honest, but respectful, communication

• A university-wide professional development process where ethical standards, career paths, and tone-and-attitude are addressed

• An agile IT community that can take full advantage of unique opportunities

• Cost reduction by leveraging what should be leveraged

A Scenario

• Today – Worst Case: Go it alone• Today – Best Case: Inquire• Future Vision: Edge, Leverage & Trust
