In October 1995 the Geffen Playhouse, under the direction of the late Gil Cates, began its inaugural season with “Four Dogs and a Bone,” by playwright John Patrick Shanley. So it is fitting that Randall Arney, the current Artistic Director, begins the Geffen’s 20th anniversary season with a new work by Shanley, “Outside Mullingar.” According to Arney “ The play is very much rooted in how things get passed down from generation to generation, whether it be land, family feuds or good ol’ Irish sarcasm. Its

story is in fact, about what changes over time. The cyclical nature of farm life is the perfect backdrop for John to reflect on life’s opportunities grasped and those forgotten. This wonderfully quiet story muses both on the passage of time and the great need to embrace it before it’s gone.

If you are not familiar with the name Shanley, you will be familiar with his acclaimed works for film and theatre. He won both the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for “Doubt,” and later he directed the film version of “Doubt,“ starring Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymor Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis. For his script for “Moonstruck,” starring Cher and Nick Cage, he received both the Writer’s Guild of America Award and the Academy Award for best original screenplay. And in 2009 The Writer’s Guild of America awarded the playwright the Lifetime Achievement in Writing honor.

In his latest play, set in Ireland circa 2008-2013, Shanley takes on his Irish roots. He recently noted in The New York Times “I have often found procrastination to be an enriching exercise. Not saying increases what I have to say. Not writing about the Irish was building up a hell of a lot of pressure to do just that.”

In 1993 he finally went to Ireland with his father, because his dad was too old to travel

alone. “When an old man asks you to take him home, you have to do it” he said.

The conversations in the family kitchen stirred his heart, but it took about 20 years for the playwright to put his feelings and emotions into words. His parents were gone when he finally sat down and wrote “Outside Mullingar” about the family farm.

His family ancestry and the family farm play an important role in this Irish tale, but the playwright also uses his fertile imagination to create a sweet love story about Rosemary Muldoon (Jessica Collins) and the shy, rather strange and introverted Tony Reilly (Jariath Conroy).

The play begins following the funeral for Rosemary’s father. Her elderly mother (Robin Pearson Rose) and Tony’s father (Dan Donohue) are talking about old times. As they reminisce, we learn that Tony’s dad may not leave the farm to his only son. Instead he may sell the land to a cousin in America because the old man fears Anthony will never marry and if there is no future heir the land won’t be passed along and remain in the Reilly family. He also alludes to a secret he cannot tell that is influencing his decision to sell the land to an heir rather than bequeath it to his son, a solitary bloke who has never gotten over his first love and her rejection of him.

Rosemary is horrified by this

plan, which she hears about from Tony. She immediately confronts the old man saying Tony is entitled to the farm in repayment for his countless years of service on the land.

Is she in love with Tony, despite the fact that he pushed her down when she was just a young girl of about seven or eight? And you know the Irish can hold on to a grudge. Or is she just fair minded?

It takes time to tend the land, and it takes even more time for these folk to express their true feelings. One scene that embodies this takes place in the old man’s bedroom as he lays dying. And what about

Rosemary and Tony? What does he truly feel about her, and even more tellingly, what does he feel about himself and his place in the world?

“Outside Mullingar” is an imaginative, somewhat off-center tale about farm life and love, told with humor and sweetness. The entire cast of four does an outstanding job as they bring this endearing story to life on the Geffen stage.

At the Geffen Playhouse 10886 Le Conte Ave. in Westwood, LA through December 20. For tickets call (310) 208-5454 or online at GeffenPlayhous.com.

Fall 2015 has revealed a number of exciting returns for classic artists, including long-awaited returns by Jeff Lynne’s ELO and British pop-rock outfit Squeeze, as well as high-profile releases from Canadian rocker Bryan Adams, German hard rock outfit Scorpions and a solo album from ZZ Top singer-guitarist Billy Gibbons.

Artist: Jeff Lynne’s ELOTitle: Alone in the Universe (Columbia)You might like if you enjoy: Traveling Wilburys, ELO

Tell me more: For the better part of the 1970s and ‘80s, the Electric Light Orchestra – better known as ELO – thrilled rock fans with dozens of spectacular hits including “Evil Woman,” “Turn to Stone,” “Don’t Bring Me Down,” “All Over the World” and “Mr. Blue Sky.” When the band folded in 1986, lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Jeff Lynne became busy working as a producer for the likes of George Harrison and Roy Orbison, and a key member of supergroup of the Traveling Wilburys seemingly put an end to ELO. With 2015 being a year chalk full of amazing returns (Blur, the Zombies, Squeeze, Duran Duran), an amazing full-length disc from Jeff Lynne’s

ELO has to be heard to be believed. An acclaimed producer, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Lynne displays his myriad of talents across “Alone in the Universe,” a disc where he masterfully handles the majority of music making duties on his own. Lynne can still unleash shimmering symphonic epics (including the wonderful single “When I Was a Boy” and swirling “The Sun Will Shine On You”), but some of the most exceptional songs here include the confessional ballad “All My Life,” yearning “I’m Leaving You” and reflective title track. Information: jefflynneselo.com.

Artist: SqueezeTitle: Cradle To The Grave (Caroline)You might like if you enjoy: Crowded House, Squeeze

Tell me more: Featuring Squeeze’s first new album of new material since 1998, the newly-released “Cradle To The Grave” finds Chris Difford, Glenn Tilbrook and company forging ahead even while celebrating their storied melodic and literate style that yielded a slew of classics in the 1970s and ‘80s. The songs here blend power pop and melodic rock, all adorned with lovely harmonies and creative

arrangements that enhance each song’s core power (many of the tales here honestly chronicle middle age). “Happy Days” is as exhilarating as its title; the ambitious Beatles-styled “Sunny” and Americana-tinged “Haywire” are the creative equal of Squeeze classics such as “Tempted,” “Black Coffee in Bed” and “Cool For Cats.” A thrilling return to be sure. Information: squeezeofficial.com.

Artist: Bryan AdamsTitle: Get Up (UMe)You might like if you enjoy: Jeff Lynne, Bryan Adams

Tell me more: Singer-songwriter Bryan Adams’ latest album “Get Up” was produced by legendary Jeff Lynne (Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison), and the project is something that ultimately stretches the reach of Adams’ sincere style of rock ‘n’ roll. Some of the songs here incorporate elements of classic rock stretching back to the genre’s roots (particularly the 50s-flavored “You Belong To Me” and Beatles-mining “Don’t Even Try”), while “Go Down Rockin’” captures the spirit of the Ontario, Canada native’s classic ‘80s works. The lovely “Yesterday Was Just a Dream” is a wonderful

track that is as contemporary and affecting as anything Adams has ever recorded. Information: BryanAdams.com.

Artist: ScorpionsTitle: Return To Forever (Legacy)You might like if you enjoy: Scorpions, AC/DC

Tell me more: AC/DC isn’t the only classic hard rock band to have silenced the naysayers in 2015. Germany’s Scorpions - who remarkably have been together for 50 years - have issued one of their best-ever discs. “Return to Forever” features the blend of strong riffs, melodic heavy metal and striking power ballads that marked the group’s wave of top-selling albums issued throughout the 1980s and early ‘90s. Singer Klaus Meines remains a wonder, his voice able to convey youthful abandon as well as more mature emotions. “House of Cards” is the band’s most compelling ballad since 1990’s classic “Wind of Change.” Rockers need not worry; the pumping “All For One,” “Going Out With a Bang” and “Rock My Car” are among the genuine hard rockers on the album. The straight-forward and aptly-titled “Rock ‘n’ Roll Band”

sums up the five decade career of one of the globe’s most enduring hard rocking outfits. Information: the-scorpions.com.

Artist: Billy Gibbons and the BFG’sTitle: Perfectamundo (Concord Records)You might like if you enjoy: ZZ Top, Los Lobos

Tell me more: While ZZ Top front man Billy Gibbons’ distinctive vocal growl and blistering lead guitar work will quickly be recognized on “Perfectamundo,” the first-ever solo album from Gibbons stands apart in style from his role in his Texas-spawned Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band. Here Gibbons’ musical stamp is mixed with a decidedly Cuban flair courtesy of his musical collaborator Martine “G.G.” GuiGui. The festive, dance-minded affair blends blues, Latin rhythms, rap, Carribeano and other exotic elements. Infectious and authentic, highlights include the Mexicano-blues rocker “Got Love If You Want It” and percussion-anchored “Sal Y Pimiento.” Information: billygibbons.com.

The Palms Springs Art Museum’s members new and old took over The Galen and Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden in a big way on November 20th when dozens gathered to “Meet the Galen” in style. This was the Fourth Annual event, co-chaired, this season by Jamie Kabler and Susan Stein.

Welcoming arriving guests was the one and only Bella da Ball, stunning in one of her

knockout designer dresses and shocking bigger than life turquoise wig. Bella was at her diplomatic best greeting, with panache, arriving guests.

Also welcoming guests as they arrived, with DJ Alf Alpha’s music loud and clear, were Helene Galen, Jamie Kabler and Faye Sarkowsky. The annual event was predictably an overwhelming success with a rainbow of wigs from one designed with tiers of yellow sponges to a trio of tasteful ladies sporting trendy

turquoise wigs. It was a hair raising event when local publicist Joe Enos arrived crowned by a shredded white paper mop inspired wig coordinated with chic black tuxedo and swanky bowtie. Making the event hair inspired hit were a band of museum Angels that included Arlene Schnitzer of the Harold & Arlene Schnitzer Care Foundation, Merrill Lynch (Ruairi Clerkin), Aveda, Palm Springs Life, Catering by Westwood, The Desert Sun, Crater Lake

Handcrafted American Vodka, Trio Restaurant, Palm Springs News Channel 3, ABC HD, and the inimitable Buzz Boxes, a cutesy but buzzy cocktail in a box that really packs a punch according to soiree guru Cindy Kjaergaard.

Seen between desserts such as dainty meringues in many flavors and the popular Buzz Box bar were museum members Alan and JoAnn Horwitz, Harvey Lambert with Jane Effress and Jamie Lee Pricer, editor of the monthly

magazine, Valley Woman. The Palm Springs Art

By Desert Star StaffPalm Desert, Calif., – An

organization that assists more than 65,000 people in the Coachella Valley with basic needs will now be able to serve even more thanks to a $25,000 grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. The Narrow Door received a Coachella Valley Spotlight grant, which they are using in part to purchase a full-size pick-up truck that transports a 16,000-pound mobile kitchen to feed hot meals to homeless and other needy residents.

“The mobile kitchen is an innovative concept to bring food where people need it most,” said Christopher McGuire, Vice President of Programs for the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation.

This summer, 6,000 hot meals were served to under-privileged children from two mobile kitchens, which were built and donated specifically for The Narrow Door. About

400 traditional turkey meals will be served to homeless in Indio and Coachella communities this Thanksgiving through a mobile kitchen. In addition, The Narrow Door assembles and delivers about 300 food boxes to working poor households each week.

“We are so appreciative of the grant from the Berger Foundation,” said David Ramirez, who founded The Narrow Door with his mother, Sue, in 2009. “And, the exposure from the Coachella Valley Spotlight has already helped tremendously. Never has our phone rang so much with offers to help.”

“The connections we have made in the community because of the Spotlight award is truly a blessing,” said Sue Ramirez.”

With about 150 regular volunteers, The Narrow Door helps families all year long with distributions of food, personal hygiene items, clothing and more. During the holiday season, about 500 more volunteers

help the group operate the Christmas Store, which collects toy donations, and then allows pre-selected low-income families to “shop” for children’s gift at no charge.

“With the Christmas Store, The Narrow Door has created a bright spot in

the lives of our neighbors who might not otherwise have that during the holidays,” said Mike Stutz, General Manager of Gulf California Broadcast Company, which owns and operates CBS Local 2.

Along with the grant funds, The Narrow Door was featured

on CBS Local 2’s “Eye on the Desert,” in public service announcements and on the www.cbslocal2.com website throughout the month of November. To learn more about the Christmas Store or The Narrow Door, call 760-775-6200 or go to www.thenarrowdoor.org.

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic

The College of the Desert (COD) hits all the right notes in its compelling production of “RENT” that opened last Friday at the on- campus Pollock Theatre.

The rock musical loosely based on Giacomo Puccini’s 1896 opera “La Boheme”, has been updated to 1980’s New York City, and explores the lives a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive in New York City’s East Village during the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 1980’s.

The COD production with libretto, music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, crisply and deftly directed by Mark Almy, features seventeen talented actor/singers that grittily bring to life their stories of survival, hope and dreams; defining what it means to be human in the process.

The story as it unfolds revels in a 20th century version of living the New York City bohemian life style complete with its alienation, protests, drug and sex-fueled existence, may not be everyone’s favorite cup of tea for those over fifty, but no one can deny the talent, dedication, and commitment of this cast who wonderfully lay out, warts and all, what it means to live and be true to one’s self; risking alienation from family, friends and ‘traditional society’ in general; even death.

Finely nuanced high octane performances flow from the

principals: Shafik Wahab as Mark Cohen, a documentary filmmaker who chronicles the stories of his fellow bohemians; Christian Quevedo as Roger Davis, delivers a powerful portrayal as an ex-drug addict struggling to remain clean when his girlfriend, a seductive and poignant Allegra Angelo as the conflicted Mimi Marquez, has different plans for their relationship. It’s an astonishing performance by Angelo and one of her best yet in the Valley. Meagan Van Dyke as the bi-sexual Maureen Johnson is a visual delight with a voice and figure to match. Alisha Bates as Joanne Jefferson, lover to Maureen can seduce with a belting voice or the purring voice of a kitten.

Aaron Anzaldua as Angel Schunard, a street hustler/drag queen meets and falls in love with Anthony Martinez as Tom Collins, a street-person where both become a compelling couple within society’s outcasts. Martinez’s portrayal tugs at the heart with his tender commitment and devotion to their relationship. Dion Khan as Benny Coffin III, renders an understated performance as the landlord and friend of the bohemian renters who can’t pay their rent, thus risking landing on the street once again. Strong support comes from the entire ensemble cast that display individual talent and memorable moments within a team framework.

All of the cast members boast strong voices and

deliver nicely defined on-stage characterizations thanks to the seamless and sensitive direction of Almy whose traffic management skills keep this energetic and potently performed rock musical on point. There is no substitute for experience and talent, plus a personal vision brought by the director who in this case has performed and directed over 90 roles in Opera and musical theatre all over the world.

The technical credits are always well executed at COD, but on opening night a power failure just as the production began left two quick-thinking leading actors (Wahab and Quevedo) in the dark. Actors are never at a loss for words. The two merely

vamped ‘til ready, explaining the story of “RENT” to the appreciative audience patiently waiting for the stage lights to reappear – which they did! That’s the beauty of live theatre. Every moment is constantly evolving on the stage.

Music Director Scott Smith, is a bit of a treasure at the college. An alum of some twenty years, his direction and performance on keyboard, along Anthony Arizaga on guitar; Mikael Jacobson on Bass; and Brad Vaughn on drums provide all the musical firepower needed to empower the actors.

The choreography of Shea New is sensual and sexy throughout. In the “bacchanal” scene, the choreography is highly

suggestive but is in keeping with the freedom and abandon of the bohemian life style of the day. It’s provocative and a creative way of getting the audience to pay attention to what is happening on stage with the story.

“RENT” is one of the most intriguing and entertaining productions produced this season by the COD theatre department. Don’t Miss It! There are only three more performances: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November, 27, 28, and 29. The curtain on Friday and Saturday is at 7 PM. The Sunday curtain is at 3 PM. For tickets call the Box Office at 760-773-2574.
