By Janice GoughWhen

it comes to money, investing, and retirement, informed people

are employing the concept of keeping their principal safe in order to produce an ongoing income stream in re-tirement. We all can see the benefit to plan with the idea of never running out of something as important as money.

As life expectancy continues to increase, it becomes more significant than ever to have a semi-passive “engine,” routinely providing you with fresh cash to meet your living expens-es.

If you’re not spending your principal, but instead using it to create perpetual income, you can live for 50 or more years in retirement. As long as your principal is intact, you’ll have an income stream.

The type of investments needed must be secure and produce a fair rate of return to keep up with the cost of living. Risk investments are a gamble for investing your “rest of your life money.” It seems as though every single time the stock market increased enough to make you feel good about your broker statement; the gains quickly disintegrated in a gut-wrenching plunge. Then the finger crossing starts all over again. Annuities and CDs that link to a return of a market index are great planning tools. The Principal is guaranteed and you do not incur losses,

only gains, while receiving a competitive return. There are general-ly no fees attached to these products, whereas Risk products have many fees.

For most of the Income Generation, that’s people born before 1966, do not have the finan-cial wherewithal to wait out another 30 to 50% drop in stock prices. Keep in mind that a 30% loss requires a 42% percent gain to get back to Even, while a 50% loss requires 100% return. And sadly, enough when you are older you do not have the time on your side to get back what you have lost.

More savers that are conservative have always felt more comfortable with a good idea of what they’ll be getting. In this way, they can know what they have to work with and avoid a lot of stress. They do not dip

into their savings; instead, they “plant” it someplace safe and live off the fruit.

One question that I get asks a lot is, “What if I invest today and rates will go up tomorrow?” The idea of waiting for a higher return is a mistake. For every day, you wait; rates have to raise that much more to make it worthwhile. Time can be your greatest asset or enemy. Ein-

stein quoted, “Compounding interest is the eighth wonder of the world…He who under-stands it…earns it…those who do not…pays it.”

Playing it, Safe in a Volatile Market

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCAL

Dear Mr. Richardson:Our board meetings

consist of two parts. A closed meeting is convened with the board members and the manager discussing “sensitive” matters such as homeowner complaints, fines, and liens. An open meeting follows, with time allowed for input from any homeowner. Does the closed “executive” meeting run afoul of the Open Meeting Act? Thanks for your excellent input. R.M., San Marcos

Dear R.M.:The “Open Meeting Act

(Civil Code 4900-4955) at Civil Code 4935 provides that certain specific matters may be discussed in closed session. Closed sessions are necessary. They protect the confidentiality of certain discussions which could harm the association or embarrass individual members if disclosed. Such matters include discussion of HOA employees, disciplinary hearings, contract negotiations, delinquency payment plans and litigation

discussions. If one fell behind in one’s assessments, and had to come talk to the board to explain and ask for a payment plan to catch up, one would not want the entire association listening in on the discussion.

Unfortunately, some boards, managers, and even lawyers permit overuse of closed sessions. Closed session (aka “executive session”) can be used only when authorized by statute. A closed meeting is a secret meeting, and boards need to protect their integrity by deliberating in the open and making sure that only the allowed matters are discussed in closed session.

Thanks for your question, Kelly

Dear Kelly:In a recent column in

the paper, a questioner said “PRIOR to open board meetings, our board has closed door meetings.” That doesn’t pass the smell test to make homeowners sit around waiting for the open meeting. Our board starts with the open meeting, so homeowners know when to be there at a given time. Only after do we go to executive session. OK, so those with disciplinary hearings

have to wait, but usually they never show up anyway.

N.S., Temecula

Dear N.S.:Boards often schedule

closed session meetings before the announced regular open session meetings, but it can often be difficult to predict how long a closed session will take to complete. Sensitive issues can require further deliberation, or hearings can run longer, leaving homeowners waiting outside for the main meeting to start.

Boards often begin with a closed session because they want to handle sensitive issue deliberations first, to make sure they are not skipped if directors are tired after a long evening meeting.

Perhaps boards could allocate some time before the open meeting, and be prepared to return to closed session after the open meeting business is concluded. Some associations have their closed session meetings at a different time or even day. Having an announced time limit on hearings also may help.

Best, KellySir: What is the California

HOA laws web site?L.G., Carlsbad

Dear L.G.:The California Legislature

official web site is the source for state law. That address is www.leginfo.legislature.ca.gov, and is easy to use – to find most of the laws regarding common interest developments, click on “California Law”, then Civil Code, then scroll down to Civil Code 4000-6150. One can read any portion of the Davis-Stirling Common Interest Development Act there. Non-residential associations are governed by the “Commercial And Industrial Common Interest Development Act,” found at Civil Code Sections 6500 through 6876.

Hoping you find this site useful, Kelly

occasion for Idyllwild Arts is our opportunity to reflect on the impact our unique educational program has had on individuals around the world – an impact that can only be measured by bringing together artists, activists, learners, and teachers, who become empowered to make a difference in the world,” Jordan continued.

The network of Idyllwild Arts

stretches throughout Southern California, and some of the best minds in the entertainment industry offered to help mark this momentous occasion. Former CBS producer and Idyllwild Academy alumna parent, Suzan Mischer stepped forward to be the Artistic Director/Producer of this anniversary celebration. Suzan enlisted the expertise of her husband Don Mischer, to produce the video

“WE ARE THE IDYLLWILD,” which premiered at the event.

The celebration began when doors opened at 5:00 p.m. showcasing an extensive Student Exhibition from the Visual Arts Department of Idyllwild, featuring paintings, sculptures, photographs, ceramics, and printmaking. Guests were then escorted upstairs to The NOVO Theatre to enjoy the Student Showcase of outstanding performances, highlighting Idyllwild’s talented

dancers, musicians, and actors of Idyllwild Arts Academy.

The celebration continued into the night with an over-the-top Back Stage party in the VIP Lounge of The NOVO, where guests were treated to specialty cocktails, numerous food stations, a jazz trio, and students painting a 6 foot stretch of canvas.

By Desert Star StaffPresident Barack Obama

is facing increased pressure due to a renewed effort to make a secret Congressional report public that may describe links between Saudi Arabia and the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

Over the past week, families of 9/11 victims have criticized President Obama because of reports stating that his administration is lobbying Congress to block a bill that would allow terror victims to sue foreign governments connected to attacks on American soil. The criticism comes as Obama prepares to travel to Riyadh for the fourth time in his presidency.

Saudi Arabia has threatened to sell some $750 billion in US assets if the bill passes, fearing it could leave the country vulnerable in US courts, the New York Times reported. Many relatives of 9/11 victims believe Riyadh played a role in the attacks, particularly since 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi citizens.

Officially, the 9/11 Commission Report “found no evidence that the Saudi government as an institution or senior Saudi officials individually funded the organization.” However, a previous Congressional report, which the Commission followed up on, features 28 pages that more closely detail the hijackers’ sources of money and funding, and those documents have been kept classified for more than a decade.

Families of 9/11 victims have tried to sue Saudi Arabia

in court over the country’s possible role in the attacks before, but US law grants foreign governments protection in domestic courts. Last year, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit claiming that the country had provided material support to the terrorists, ruling that Riyadh had sovereign immunity. Saudi attorneys argued in court that there was no evidence directly linking the country to 9/11.

“If someone you loved was murdered and the person was just able to go away Scott free, would you be okay with that? I don’t think anybody would,” Loria Van Auken said to CBS News. Van Auken’s husband Kenneth worked in the North Tower of the World Trade Center and died in the attacks.

Pressure on Obama is also growing from current members of his own party. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York) said the president should

declassify the documents even before he travels to Saudi Arabia this Tuesday.

“If the president is going to meet with the Saudi Arabian leadership and the royal family, they think it would be appropriate that this document be released before the president makes that trip, so that they can talk about whatever issues are in that document,” she said to 60 Minutes.

In addition to seeing whether Obama will release the pages, Americans are also waiting to see how the president will react to Riyadh’s threat of financial retaliation. The Obama administration has argued that stripping sovereign immunity from nations over terror attacks on the US would endanger Americans and spark similar legislation against the US.

Relations between the US and Riyadh have already been strained by the Iranian nuclear deal and unflattering

comments made by Obama in an article that appeared in The Atlantic, in which he criticized the Saudis as “free riders.” Since news of Saudi Arabia’s financial threat came to light, however, the president has been urged by many Americans to take a tougher stance.

“If the President allows himself to get pushed around this way in front of the world, then he earns every bit of the anger being directed at him by the extended family of September 11,” wrote Mike Lupica in a New York Daily News editorial.

“This is about turning his back on the dead of Sept. 11 and their survivors, and letting his country down at the same time. He is like all the others who held his office before him, more desperate than ever in the late rounds to be remembered as a great President. Be one now.”

By Desert Star StaffLOS ANGELES -

California immigration rights groups are rallying in Los Angeles and in

Washington D.C. today as the Supreme Court considers a highly controversial immigration case.

The case involves the

constitutionality of President Obama’s “DAPA” program, which allows undocumented parents of U.S. Citizens to get a work permit and

Social Security card. The court will also look

at “DACA,” the program that delays deportation for people brought to the U.S. as children.

It also allows for work permits.

Ariana Galindo, 19, is an activist with the Coalition for Human Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, which is also known as CHIRLA.

She traveled to D.C. to rally with thousands of others on the steps of the Supreme Court in hopes of winning a reprieve for her parents, who came to the U.S. 25 years ago.

“So, it would really really affect all of us, education wise and emotionally,” Galindo says. “It’s inhumane. Just because your parents are immigrants they take them away from you heartlessly and they separate you from the ones you love.”

A 4-4 split on the high court would leave the anti-

immigrant appellate ruling in place. The court could also decide to delay hearing the case until a ninth justice is appointed, a process that will likely be put off until after the election.

CHIRLA is also holding a rally this morning at the federal building in Los Angeles.

Organizing director Antonio Bernabe says if they lose this round, the Latino community will redouble its efforts to elect a Democrat in November who will put forth a candidate that would tilt the high court to the left.

“We have more to lose, so we have to go into the elections to work hard, move the Latino vote, and be sure that no Republican is going into the White House,” he says.

About 4 million people stand to benefit if DAPA and extended DACA go into effect a, million in California alone. If the Supreme Court doesn’t wait for a ninth justice, a ruling is expected in June.

By Desert Star StaffCalifornia lawmakers are

considering a bill to cut the cord on landline telephone service at a hearing today before the Assembly Utilities and Commerce Committee.

Assembly Bill 2395 would permit AT&T to stop maintaining the copper-wire landline service in California in 2020, except in areas that have no alternative to cell phone or Voice Over Internet Protocol service.

Josh Hart, a consumer advocate who founded a group to fight smart meters in homes, said landlines are a crucial part of the state’s infrastructure and are less

vulnerable than cell phones. “They depend on the

electric grid, and when that goes down there’s no cell service,” he said. “So there needs to be robust, reliable high-quality landline service available as a choice for Californians.”

AT&T said its cell and VOIP services are more advanced and cost less than landlines, and have estimated that only 15 percent of households in the state maintain a landline. Advocates say that still amounts to about 10 million Californians.

Blanca Castro, manager for advocacy at AARP California, said her organization

opposes the replacement of publicly switched telephone networks because many people, especially seniors, can’t use cell phones or aren’t comfortable with the technology.

“People’s landlines are their lifeline,” she said, “because of disability, not being able to read the numbers on a cell phone and needing to have big keyboards on landlines.”

Last summer, the Federal Communications Commission passed a rule allowing phone companies to phase out landlines but required them to give homeowners and businesses three months’ and six months’ notice, respectively

made at the Democracy Awakens protest at the US Capitol, police confirmed. Officers made at least three warnings before detaining people, who are calling on Congress to get money out of politics and restore the Voting Rights Act.

The latest protest comes after a week of Democracy Spring demonstrations on the Capitol steps. The demands of the two sets of rallies are very similar.

Those who have been detained chose to be arrested.

Capitol police issued three warnings before beginning to round people up.

The day began with a march from nearby Columbus Circle, in front of Union Station, to Capitol Hill. Unions support it, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, environmental groups and everyday Americans.

Approximately 300 people were arrested, including NAACP President Cornell Brooks and Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen.

has a long history of setting political trends, and actually gave birth to the massive eight-day Democracy Spring protests that are wrapping up in Washington D.C. today.

Close to 1,000 people have been arrested during the sit-ins, where activists railed

against corruption and the influence of money in politics.

Specifically, they denounce the 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court decision that declared that corporations have the same legal rights as people, which led to an explosion of super PACs and dark money.

Democracy Spring

communications director, Peter James Callahan, says the movement started two years ago with a “March for Democracy” from L.A. to Sacramento.

“After that, they had two weeks of nonviolent sit-ins at the California Capitol, which resulted in two out of their three bills being passed.”

The March for Democracy protests convinced California legislators to call for a state constitutional convention to pass an amendment to

overturn Citizens United. And in January, the

state assembly passed AB 700, the Disclose Act, which forces more transparency in political advertising.

Kai Newkirk co-founded the advocacy group 99Rise! in Los Angeles, and is now the campaign manager for Democracy Spring. He says even though Congress is controlled by Republicans who don’t support progressive goals, the Democracy Spring movement has

still made its point.“’Cause we’re gonna

lift this issue up that creates a political price for anyone who defends the status quo of corruption and refuses to stand with the people and push for reform to save our democracy,.” says Newkirk

Many of Democracy Spring’s member groups are based in California, including the Courage Campaign, which works on progressive causes in the Golden State.

By Desert Star StaffSAN FRANCISCO - It’s

Equal Pay Day, April 12, which means women have to work about 16 months to earn the same amount of money that men make in 12 months.

A new report from the Congressional Joint Economic Committee, women in California make almost 16 percent less than men - which is better than the national average of 21 percent.

Still, Noreen Farrell, executive director with the nonprofit Equal Rights Advocates in San Francisco, says the gender pay gap has stagnated for the past decade and for non-white

women, it has increased.“African American women

would have to work into July to make what men made in the previous calendar year,” says Farrell. “Latinas would have to work until October to make what men make in the previous year. It’s much worse for women of color.”

Farrell says California’s new first-in-the-nation hike in the hourly minimum wage, to $15, should go a long way toward improving pay equity. State lawmakers also passed a bill last year to ban retaliation against workers who compare salaries.

This year, Farrell is supporting AB 1676,

legislation introduced by Assemblywoman Nora Campos, that bans companies from asking applicants about their salary history.

“When an employer asks a woman what she made at her last job, that’s in some circumstances been depressed by prior discrimination, and she starts off on unequal pay footing,” Farrell says.

On the federal level, the report authors would like to see Congress pass the Fair Pay Act, the Equal Rights Act, and bills to guarantee family leave, universal child care and flexible work schedules.

Eating trends are born in California. When California moves towards a healthier and spicier diet, the rest of the

nation follows. In recognition of the spicy food trend and California’s love affair with tacos, the California Milk Processor Board (CMPB), creator of the iconic got milk?

Campaign, has launched a new statewide campaign titled, “Spicy Loves Milk,” which joins together Californians’ love of tacos and America’s fascination with spicy foods while highlighting milk’s essential role in spicy food pairing. Got milk? embarked on a journey to bring you the hottest tacos that are setting trends across the state. Seven popular chefs across California have each created a taco recipe that is true to their city’s culture, personality and taste, while showcasing milk’s versatility and unique ability to complement exciting spicy flavors and tone down the heat.

With a wide range of culinary backgrounds, these California chefs created milk and taco pairings that include the Crispy Lechón al Tomatillo from Evan Kidera and Gil Payumo of San Francisco’s Señor Sisig; a Citrus Pork Taco with Quemada Sauce from Palm Springs’ Las Casuelas Terraza; and the Blazing Pork Belly Blossom from Michael Ruffner of San Diego’s My Urban Eats, to name a few. Each and every chef selected brings something unique, bold and exciting to the table. Chefs Evan Kidera and Gil Payumo have redefined contemporary street food with their Filipino

fusion dishes and have been voted SF Weekly’s Best Food Truck four years in a row. Chef Michael Ruffner prepares his dishes from a gourmet mobile kitchen that carries equipment only found in major, upscale restaurants and simply uses local ingredients. Las Casuelas Terraza continues to appetize Palm Springs locals after more than 35 years in business by offering the best Mexican dishes in the Coachella Valley. Whether it’s with their unusual ingredients, unique cooking techniques, or alluring spices; they have all succeeded in taking the hottest food trends and integrated them into the taco.

“With milk’s inherent properties and quick ability to cool the tongue after eating spicy food, this food pairing couldn’t have been more perfect,” said Steve James’s executive director of the CMPB. The “Spicy Loves Milk” campaign will combine California Cuisine with our state’s freshest ingredients, exotic spices, and showcase diverse food offerings found only in California. “We are excited for taco lovers to try the varying flavor combinations which will be further enhanced by a milk

pairing,” said Steve James. The new generation of

consumers in California and the rest of the nation seek flavor innovations and a growing desire for spicy foods. We are experiencing what is called, “The Sriracha Effect” as explained by Technomic. Technomic discovered that Sriracha can add an instant ethnic taste to something that may not be ethnic otherwise, for example, a sandwich. Due to this effect, chefs are searching far and wide to find other assertive flavorings and spices that can be enjoyed the same way as Sriracha. Spicy foods not only arouse our taste buds, but they offer health benefits as well[2]. Spicy peppers contain capsaicinoids that have been found to help prevent chronic diseases, and they also have high concentrations of vitamins and antioxidants. Among the health benefits linked to eating spicy foods is weight loss, and heart health to name a few.

By Desert Star StaffWhen you feel strong

nothing can hold you back. From building your muscles to strengthening your mind and conditioning your body, every day you strive towards looking and feeling healthy in the truest sense.

Here are some tips that will help to improve your long-term health.

Amp Up Your Workout: Don’t let your workout routine get stale. Mix up your regularly scheduled program to work different muscles and ward off workout boredom.

Take time to regularly evaluate your fitness regimen and make sure you’re spending enough time on improving your endurance, strength and flexibility.

For instance, training for a big race? Shave a few miles from your long run and supplement it with a bike ride. And, switch up non-cardio days with a barre, yoga or Pilates class.

Also, don’t forget to carve out time to warm up with dynamic stretches before your workout and deep stretches afterward. Get out a foam roller to stretch and massage your muscles to keep them limber. Using a foam roller will help to increase the range in motion of your muscles, which can help prevent injuries during future workouts.

Smile With Strength:

Oral health is an essential part of staying healthy in the long-term. Strengthening and repairing your enamel from everyday wear and tear can be part of your daily personal health routine.

Similar to how moisturizing lotions and conditioners replenish skin and hair, by brushing with toothpaste such as Colgate Enamel Health Mineral Repair Toothpaste twice daily, you can help strengthen weakened enamel by replenishing it with vital minerals. This toothpaste replenishes natural calcium and other minerals back into weakened enamel, for stronger, healthy enamel. More

information about Enamel Health toothpaste can be found at colgateenamelhealth.com.

Fuel Your Body: Give your body the fuel and energy it needs to keep you strong and healthy.

Start each morning with a breakfast full of nutrients and protein to set a good tone for the rest of the day. Make your mornings easier with simple tricks like preparing overnight oats the night before so you have no excuses to skip this crucial meal.

Stick to a healthy eating plan with meal planning. Prepare as many lunches and dinners for the week as you can on Sunday, before work and

family obligations get in the way. Look to fill those meals with

a balance of lean meats and proteins, legumes, fruits and vegetables, and healthy grains like brown rice and quinoa.

A healthy balanced diet will improve your energy level throughout the day and during workouts. You should also make sure that you are hydrating post-workout with water, or for an extra hydration boost, try coconut water.

When you amp up these aspects of your overall routine your body will feel the difference and you will see the difference. Follow these tips and you will feel stronger than ever. StatePoint

By Desert Star StaffBUDAPEST, Hungary,

This --This morning, the city of Budapest officially launched its bid to host the Olympic and Paralympics’ Games in 2024. The timing is appropriate, as this week Hungary also celebrates its part in the founding of the modern Olympics and the first gold medal ever won for the country in the 1896 Olympic Games.

A program of coordinated citywide activities commenced this morning at the Freedom Statue, a national symbol of liberty and peace that commands spectacular views over the Citadella. The day’s events began with short addresses from key figures in Budapest’s bid committee and sport community. The speaker line-up demonstrated strong support for the bid from the city of Budapest and the Hungarian government, and underlined Budapest’s capability as a seasoned host of numerous European and World Championship sport events, including the FINA World Championships and the European Youth Olympic Festival. Speakers also invoked the special relationship that Hungarians have with sport.

After the panel discussion,

the much-anticipated logo of the bid was unveiled on a 300 square meter flag draped from the iconic Chain Bridge. The logo represents the vitality of Budapest’s bid: at its centre is the Freedom Statue, with the fresh waters of the Danube at its feet, surrounded by the celebratory warmth and openness of the Hungarian personality.

The celebrations will continue throughout the rest on the day in central public meeting places and leisure locations across the city. Demonstrations in seven sports will take place, followed by

open sessions, allowing the people of Budapest the chance to join in a favorite sport, or try their hand at a new one, alongside national Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The planned sport activities include basketball, fencing, table tennis, water polo, beach volleyball, gymnastics, and weightlifting.

The launch day activities will conclude with a free festival of live music in Erzsébet Square in the city centre, headlined by popular Budapest bands.

The bid’s official online presence and social media channels will also be launched later today.

Speakers:The mayor of Budapest, István Tarlós Zsolt Borkai, President of the Hungarian Olympic Committee Balázs Fürjes, Chairman of the Budapest 2024 Bid Committee Attila Szalay-Berzeviczy, President of the Movement to Bring the Olympics to Budapest Ágnes Kovács, Olympic champion and Chair of the National Athletes’ Committee Amarilla Veres, Paralympic champion Pál Szekeres, Olympic and Paralympic champion http://www.budapest2024.org

Three Ways to Improve Your Healthy Routines

April 20, 2016 www.desertstarweekly.com

8 DesertSTAR

Something’s (everything about you) exalted, there’s an abundance of physical and emotional energy, your moods swing into a rhythm following the stars. You seek to understand, then protect your values, possessions, becoming steadfast, like a Taurus. Although fluctuating financially you’re always prosperous.

Watching you these days we see activity, forcefulness, courage, leadership. You’re free, independent lead by imagination and vision. Your feelings assert themselves everywhere. Enlightenment is your purpose. Nothing obstructs this, not even relationships. You pioneer new enterprises, teach new ways of thinking. You’ve found your Path. Careful.

You settle into a quiet place, alert and sensitive to the needs of others. At times you’re into the mysterious or mystical through prayer, meditation or imagination. It’s good to stay behind the scenes, study things like forgiveness, apokatastasis (Greek for “being restored”, returning to an original dream), a new word from St. Gregory of Nyssa. The Earth this week is being sanctified. Is

your crystal bowl ready?

A sense of being enlightened this week and month come through communication with social groups, friends, organizations and/or communities seeking to reform and revolutionize society. You will ask what are the collective objectives? And these help define your future hopes and wishes. If they are not practical you will make them so. Your values and ideals illumine.

You seek enlightenment through interaction with and great achievement in the world. Concerned with reputation, honor, or fame you learn how to be an authority and influence others with kindness. As you take on more responsibilities you also learn how to lead with both power and love. When one is without the other leadership is hollow. Every leader learns this through suffering.

You have high ideals that seek justice and equality. Your actions attempt to remove the blindfold from the eyes of Mother justice. You aspire for more education, deeper consciousness and true wisdom. You expand your

mind through travel, religion or philosophical endeavors. You try to spread new ideas. Few see your spirit of adventure. Begin to carve a sacred staff.

You look to others, seeing how they live a life of values. You contemplate aspects of death and regeneration, the phoenix-like qualities found in those with great courage. You seek a deeper level of intimacy. Some Librans will enter into detective work diagnosing difficulties (health, forensics, etc). Whenever you engage in conflict you are seeking to find the way to greater harmony. Think on this.

Enlightenment comes through seeing those close to you with new eyes, eyes not judgmental but through an unconditional filled with love and understanding. You will find harmony through cooperation, balance through diplomacy, and peace through negotiation. This sounds like the United Nations, which is also Scorpio. The Great One is always knocking on the UN’s (and your) door.

You will enlighten and illumine others, just like the Buddha would, by blessing everything, being dispassionate, by tending

to necessities, both personal and professional, by assisting and serving others which creates a holy order of things, by tending to details, particular to your health. All with a neutral attitude. Then you walk your usual razor’s edge with grace.

You’re often very dignified, and more so this month as the Buddha’s blessings shower upon your home and garden and creativity. Your dignity allows others to see you as self-expressive, entertaining (yes, very funny sometimes), dramatic, inventive, imaginative, romantic, and playful. If anyone acts proud of themselves, praise them even more. An interesting and kind response.

Enlightenment occurs this month through family, acknowledging the foundation of your life and how you’ve adapted to and embraced early learnings. As you grew you sought new sources of happiness, love and vitality. Nurture and shelter all that you have been given. Give thanks for your early years. They honed the goodness within yourself now. Do you need a new home?

You seek to improve upon

your environments. A creativity moves within you to clean and enlighten, clear, brighten, order and beautify. This provides you with tasks and purpose, two things needed to feel comfort and to fit in. It would be good to contact siblings, walk through neighborhoods, take short trips and learn a new language, maybe Sanskrit, draw the Diamond Sutra, study the Tibetan Sand Mandala. Reaching for the Light.

By Desert Star StaffWhen it comes to

successful springtime entertaining, think light and refreshing food and drink. Keeping flavors and colors cool will infuse your get-together with energy and zest.

Food: When the weather warms, let your guests’ plates

cool with fresh salads and cold soups like gazpacho or chilled pea soup.

Get fresh produce in season at your farmer’s market or grocer. Serving up big helpings of colorful vegetables will bring seasonal freshness directly to your table.

Great appetizers for spring include shrimp cocktail and fresh tomato bruschetta. Serve dips like hummus and guacamole with freshly chopped vegetables like bell peppers and carrots. All of these are easily prepared and refreshing starters in warm weather.

For main dishes, rely on cold proteins: chilled roasted chicken or poached fish can be paired with a pasta salad and topped with mozzarella or goat cheese.

These ideas are great for serving family-style, giving you more time to mingle. Remember, simplicity should extend to your hosting duties!

Drinks: Wine and cocktails are the stars of the show at any good get-together. This spring, think about going beyond traditional warm weather drinks. A delicious, unexpected choice is Port wine. With all its diverse styles (ruby, tawny, rosé, and white), Port should not be reserved for the colder months. Certain types work perfectly in warm weather, such as Croft Pink Port, a crisp, ripe and fruity wine. Serve chilled with a squeeze of lime or in a rosé sangria; it’s a great pairing for lighter meals.

Warmer days also call for lighter cocktails that are lower in alcohol. Try Fonseca Siroco, a dry white Port, that is delicious served over ice, topped with tonic, and garnished with a lemon

peel. It’s a simple and refreshing spring sipper.

Some Tawny Port wines are great served chilled, such as Croft Reserve Tawny or Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Old Tawny. They are light, nutty, and have good acidity, making them a naturally refreshing choice for an excellent aperitif on their own or paired with hard, nutty cheeses or paté.

A glass of Port also offers a lighter, warm weather alternative to end a meal, satisfying sweet cravings without eating an entire heavy dessert.

Port, which was once thought of as a classic winter drink, is now lightened up to be enjoyed any time of the year. It’s also one of the few wines that keeps in the refrigerator for weeks after being opened; ready to go for those impromptu spring sipping moments. Taylor Fladgate, Fonseca and Croft are all famed Port producers to try.

Above all, have fun with your food and drinks this spring entertaining season, keeping everything light and easy for you and your guests. StatePoint

Due to popular demand, “Kinky Boots,” winner of six Tony Awards in 2013, is back at the Hollywood Pantages for a very limited run. The upbeat, high-heeled hit, with songs by Grammy and Tony winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper and book by four-time Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein, is a celebration of friendship and

the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind. The story, based on the Miramax film “Kinky Boots,” was inspired by true events. It starts in a men’s shoe factory in Northampton, England and ends on a high-heeled note in glamorous Milan.

Following his father’s death, Charlie Price (Adam

Kaplan) inherits his father’s shoe factory, but times are changing and their brand of sturdy men’s shoes is no longer popular. Charlie doesn’t want to run the factory, but he doesn’t want to let down the workers he has known since he was a child. Suddenly, inspiration hits him, literally, when he tries to defend Lola (J. Harrison Ghee), a drag queen that is accosted in front of the theatre where “she” performs. In the scuffle Lola fights like a pro, but the heel on one of her stiletto boots breaks off. Charlie can repair her boot and due to their downbeat encounter, an upbeat idea is born. Charlie will make sturdy “Kinky Boots” if Lola will design them. Lola’s sketches are so wild and colorful Charlie is certain the boots will not only appeal to men in drag, but to fashion conscious ladies as well.

Tiffany Egan is adorable

and funny as Lauren, who has a crush on her boss. When she sings “The History of Wrong Guys” she lets us know she is smitten with Charlie, who unfortunately is already engaged. Aaron Walpole is also a standout as Don, a burly factory guy who finds it hard to accept Lola for the man he really is since he seems like a woman to Don. Their interaction adds dimension to the plot.

The opening-night audience was in high spirits throughout the show, and the cast received a loud, long, and enthusiastic standing ovation when this feel good musical came to an end. “Kinky Boots” runs through April 24 only at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre, 6233 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, Prices start at $29. For tickets phone 1-800-982-2787 or online at www.HollywoodPantages.com or www.Ticketmaster.com.

Coming next to the Pantages: “Chicago,” starring Brandy and Eddie George, April 26-May 1 followed by “42nd Street,” May 3-June 19. June 22-July 17 “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” will arrive, followed by the divinely decadent “Cabaret,” July 19-Aug. 7.

You can order ticket packages now for the 2016-17 Season which kicks off in November with “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Next is the classic “The King and I” in December. “Finding Neverland” runs Feb. 21 to March 12, 2017 followed by “An American in Paris” March 22 to April 9. May begins with “The Bodyguard, the Musical” May 2-21 followed by the ever popular “The Book of Mormon” May 30 to July 9, 2017. On August 11 until Dec 30, 2017 “Hamilton: An American Musical” will close out the year...

“Kinky Boots” on Stage at Pantages

By Beverly CohnBefore launching into

a review of “Stage Kiss,” I think it important to say a word or two about satire. Many of us are familiar with “Saturday Night Live” or the famous “The Second City” where no subject got past the long reach of their collective satirical eye. This genre, which actually goes back to early Greek plays, does not appeal to everyone’s theatrical taste palette. Some may not find it funny while others might actually be offended. No judgment intended. I am, however, one of those people with a giddy sense of humor and am a sucker for satire or “low-brow” humor. I have to admit that a pie in the face or someone slipping on a banana peel, tickles my funny bone. So, I plead guilty to being a fan of such comedy, which brings me back to the play at hand.

“Stage Kiss” premiered at Playwrights Horizons in New York City and earned an Off-Broadway Critics’ pick. Performed on the West Coast for the first time, Miss Ruhl’s clever send-up of the drama, which takes place backstage as well as off stage, has travelled well. Illuminating the angst, Ruhl’s “insider script” sheds a light on the insecurity housed in some actors and directors, and the sometimes-blurred lines between make-believe vs. real life realities. “Stage Kiss” definitely moves back and forth between those two worlds.

A very well written Act 1 begins with “She,” or the character of Ada Wilcox, a neurotic actress played amazingly well by Glenne Headly who has sharp comic timing and a playful vocal instrument. Entering a bare stage, she is auditioning for a lead role for the first time in years and is nervous. She is late which adds to her anxiety. Before Ada can settle down and read the “sides,” (her scenes only) she asks permission to move the chair which faces her audition partner Kevin, well played by

Matthew Scott Montgomery, who contrasts her broad reading with just line readings. Stalling, she now asks the director to tell her the story line, which basically is about a woman who is dying of cancer and her wish is to see her former lover for the last time. The clearly inept director, appropriately played by Tim Bagley, sits patiently at a table, answers all her questions, and waits until she stops flitting about the stage and finally settles down. The scene calls for her to kiss Kevin and she says, “Do you mind if I kiss you? You look so young so I don’t want to traumatize you.” When they come to the kiss, the gymnastics are hysterical as they try to physically figure out how to do it. At one point, the director asks her if she can sing and she says, “I can learn to sing” and unhappy with her audition adds, “I could learn to act, too.”

Miraculously, she is cast in the role and rehearsals are about to commence. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Ada, her former lover, deliciously played by

Barry Del Sherman, has been cast to play the role of her former lover who is a successful sculptor living in Sweden. Initially, there is tension between them, but remember the name of the play as there are multiple, and I mean multiple, long, passionate kisses which ignites their old feelings for each other.

Since that affair, the actress has moved on with her life and is now married to investment banker Jack Wilcox, amusingly played Stephen Caffrey. His characterization is solid as the understanding and sometimes-cuckolded husband. John is not married but lives with his girlfriend Laurie, well played by Melody Butiu. She is a schoolteacher from the mid-west and comes off as a loving, kind, spiritual woman. Laurie appears to be totally indifferent when she barges in on John and Ada who have just spent a sex-filled night in this cramped apartment. She scurries around

the apartment unpacking groceries and offering Ada coffee. We find out later that she has an unusual yardstick for relationships. Ada’s blue-haired, demanding, foul-mouthed daughter is played by Emily James, who also plays the maid.

As is the norm for actors to question motivation during rehearsals, John turns to the director, who is always eating or drinking something from a container, and asks about a moment. The director offers the well-known cliché, “Follow your instincts,” which is

code for not knowing exactly what to do in that particular moment. At one point, Ada comments “This play is kind of awful,” and in fact the play-within-the play is deliberately awful and eventually the unpleasant reviews substantiates her opinion.

It’s close to opening night and John, who sprained his ankle, is on crutches. Kevin, who is gay, is John’s understudy. When asked to do the role he is fearful that if he kisses Ada, the audience will say, “Really?” Sure!” “And I will get laughed off the stage.” So, in true show biz tradition, John consents to perform on opening night, crutches and all.

Most of the action in Act I basically takes place on a bare stage. Finally it’s opening night and Scenic Designer Keith Mitchell transforms the naked stage into a beautifully designed lavish set. The director greets the audience asking them to turn off their devices informing them, “There will strobe lights and gun shots for those of you who have seizures.” This is a good time to mention that John Ballinger’s original music is delightful in its grand Broadway musical tone and creates excitement for the opening and ensuing scenes. Adding to the perfect look of the production is Lap Chi Chu’s splendid

lighting design and David Kay Mickelsen’s creative costumes.

Alas, as in too many plays, Act II does not measure up to Act I, and starts dragging about one-third of the way through. There are scenes with a hooker and her pimp, also characterized by Matthew Scott Montgomery. At one point the director barges in on John and Ada to tell them he has a new play in mind and begins to unfold the story. It was at this point that I looked at my watch and thought, “This play really has to end.” So in summary, it’s worth seeing the play for the originality of Act I, which is well-written satire served by an excellent cast and spot-on direction by Bart DeLorenzo, who keeps the pace moving at its best comedic pace and elicits wonderful performances from this talented ensemble. But, I wish someone would have said “cut” sooner.

Story and Photos by Pat KrauseThe Opera Under the Stars

is celebrating seven years of Opera programs. The event was held at the Renaissance

Esmeralda Hotel and Spa Rose Lawn on April 17th. Opera Arts always honor someone that has been supportive and nurturing the Arts in the

Coachella Valley. The St. Cecilia Patron of Music honorees this year was Barbara and Jerry Keller, who have supported all the Arts for many years with their philanthropy and willingness to give also of their time. The Keller’s said they are so blessed that they wake up smiling every day because they live in this wonderful Valley. The Keller’s thanked Opera

Arts President, Arlene Rosenthal for all she does for the charities in the Desert.

Nationally known artist, Tim Townsley, gave the Keller’s

a painting. He has extensive experience in the entertainment industry along with painting murals. Townsley is a local artist living in Cathedral City. He put a lot of his thoughts about the Keller’s in his painting. The Painting shows his conception of many operas with Mickey Mouse as the conductor. This bright and colorful painting will be proudly displayed either in their home or at their restaurant, LULUs, in Palm Springs.

The program started with the music of the “D Company” during the cocktail hour and during dinner. The opera part of the program started after dinner, and dessert was served. Victoria Kirsch was the Music Director and Pianist and has been with Opera Arts for all seven years. Kirsch told about the meaning of each song being performed. Kirsch then introduced the two beautiful songstresses,

Jamie Chamberline, a Soprano and Danielle Marcelle Bond, a Messo-Soprano. The songs depict two girls traveling to Paris and

returning home. The two women sang solo performances with a couple of duets, and the final duet was from West-Side Story. A piano solo by Victoria Kirsch came during the middle of the concert.

About 100 opera lovers enjoyed the evening’s performance. Rosenthal said that Opera Arts works with outreach programs in the East Valley and other parts of the Desert in Art Education. She said that with Cooperation and love with other charities like the Steinway programs, they bring Art to all our children. Several children were invited to the dinner because of the efforts they have made with essays and posters.

Chapter of Israel Cancer Research Fund held its annual fundraising luncheon at the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences on the Eisenhower Medical Center Campus on April 18th. Approximately 100 guests listened to three doctors speak about AIDS and Cancer Research.

Co-chairs Patrick Mundt and Dr. Jeralyn Brossfield were emcees for the event. The luncheon was hosted by the Eisenhower Medical Center, Desert AIDS project and Israel Cancer Research. The keynote speaker was Dr. Ran Taube from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Taube

spoke about the research being done where studies have shown there is a higher risk of heart attacks, cancers and infections among HIV and AIDS patients. The amount of research is being done by many facilities, and they share their information and findings.

Dr. Ken Lichtenstein, Medical Director at Eisenhower and Dr. Steven Scheibel, Director of Research at Desert AIDS Project, spoke about the great strides in medicine and research that has given many a longer life. The many forms of cancers are down because of treatments found in research and early detection. They found that creating a healthier lifestyle, stopping smoking,

diet, sports are all beneficial in the fight. Breakthroughs that Israel Cancer Research Fund has studied include Velcade, Gleeevec.Doxil, The p53 Gene, DNA methylation, the Rad51 Gene, and a novel Bone Marrow Transplant technique that fights all forms of cancers.

ICRF Coachella Chapter Board President Patrick Mundt said that what they do is pure research, and they derive no monetary benefit. What the ICRF discovers they share. They work with all religious and ethnic researchers, and together they make things happen and are leaders in the fight against Cancer. The journey from AIDS to Cancer was a main topic of the day. Mundt spoke of the

quality of care, and cancer treatment is one of the best here at Eisenhower Medical Center. This informative luncheon showed that collaboration is the

key to finding a cure for cancer and HIV/AIDS. ICRFs misson is to continue to find treatments and cures for all forms of cancers throughout the world.

By Desert Star StaffOrtho, a top US

manufacturer of lawn and garden pesticides, will phase out products containing the neonicotinoid class of chemicals, the use of which has been linked to a massive decline in honeybee population.

Ortho, a division of Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, announced Tuesday that it will cease the use of neonicotinoid (“neonic”) ingredients imidacloprid, clothianidin and dinotefuran by 2017, while phasing out neonics in eight products that are used to kill garden pests by the year 2021.

Tim Martin, Ortho’s vice president and general manager, said the company will also begin a “multi-year partnership” with pollinator advocacy organizations to “to promote pollinator habitat” and “homeowner education” initiatives to encourage “responsible use of pesticides where

pollinators can be found.”“This decision comes

after careful consideration regarding the range of possible threats to honey bees and other pollinators,” Martin said in a statement. “While agencies in the United States are still evaluating the overall impact of neonics on pollinator populations, it’s time for Ortho to move on.”

Martin added that the change may require gardeners to apply Ortho products more frequently than is currently recommended, and that the cost of products will not change significantly.

Neonics attack the central nervous systems of insects, causing tremors, paralysis, and death. The insecticide is absorbed into treated plants and distributed in their vascular systems, rendering various parts – including the roots, leaves, stem, flowers, nectar, pollen and guttation fluid – toxic to insects.

Neonics like imidacloprid were developed in the 1990s

to boost yields of staple crops such as corn, but they are also widely used on annual and perennial plants in lawns and gardens. Researchers believe the neonics are causing some kind of biological reaction in bees that has been blamed for Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), the disease killing off honeybees and threatening pollination of the world’s crops.

While regulatory agencies in the US are still assessing the impact of neonics on bee populations, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said imidacloprid can be a threat to various bees and other pollinators.

Groups wary of pesticide use refer to current research blaming the cause of CCD on two major types of neonics, including imidacloprid. Another study found that bees exposed to “field-realistic” doses of neonics gather less than half the pollen that they normally do, causing

starvation among their young.Environmentalists are

calling on the EPA to join the European Commission in adopting a moratorium on such insecticides. In 2013, The EC instituted a two-year moratorium on the use of three neonic pesticides, including imidacloprid.

In 2015, the EPA proposed a prohibition on the use of pesticides that are toxic to bees – including neonics – when crops are in bloom, and temporarily halted the approval of new outdoor neonic uses until new bee data is submitted and pollinator risk assessments are complete.

n March, the US Fish and Wildlife Service said it will consider protecting two species of wild bumblebees under the Endangered Species Act.

Meanwhile, major neonic producers like Bayer CropScience and Syngenta have said that claims of neonic effects on bee populations

were exaggerated.Honeybees pollinate more

than 100 US crops that are worth more than $200 billion a year. CCD has killed tens of millions of honeybees in the US, with annual death rates of about 30 percent. Since 2006, about 10 million beehives at an average value of $200 each have been lost, according to a 2013 US Department of Agriculture Study. CCD is threatening the existence of those crops.

In May of 2015, the Obama administration announced a strategy to protect bee habitats. The National Strategy to Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators aims to reduce honeybee colony losses during winter to no more than 15 percent within a decade. The strategy also states that the government and private entities will restore or enhance 7 million acres of land for pollinators over the next five years.

California has almost 50,000 oil wells and more than 4,100 gas wells – and a new report says federal law allows companies to use chemicals for drilling and fracking with virtually no health testing and then use confidentiality claims to hide basic information on what’s being injected.

The report, by the nonprofit advocacy group the Partnership for Policy Integrity, reviewed

EPA records and found that health information was made public in only two of 99 cases.

Dusty Horwitt, senior counsel with the Partnership for Policy Integrity, says the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act is too lax.

“Companies can claim the chemicals’ name confidential, same thing with the expected production volume, how people might be exposed to the chemical,” he states. “And that prevents people from

identifying in some cases where the chemicals are used.”

The EPA has expressed concern about many of these chemicals, saying exposure can cause skin and eye irritation and be toxic to the brain, liver and kidneys.

Oil and gas companies say they comply with the law and are within their rights to claim proprietary information as confidential.

Horwitt says the EPA tests don’t take into account the

possibilityof leaks or spills, and adds that researchers found that two of the chemicals of concern have been used in .

“We think it’s important that someone from the state of California or an independent researcher go to these well sites and make sure that these chemicals aren’t migrating into groundwater or otherwise getting out into the environment where they can come into contact with people,” he states.

Two bills are making

their way through Congress that improve the rules on confidentiality and make it easier for the EPA to request more health tests.

But Horwitt notes that the bills still don’t require public disclosure of information about the chemicals or the health testing.

California does have a fracking disclosure registry called FracFocus, but companies’ participation in it is voluntary.

Four noteworthy ensembles are breaking new ground across a wide range of genres, including jazz, the blues, soul and Americana.

Artist: GoGo Penguin Title: Man Made Object (Blue Note Records) You might like if you enjoy: Vince Guaraldi Trio, Robert Glasper Trio, Brian Eno

Tell me more: Manchester, UK-based trio GoGo Penguin crafts soundscapes as lush and exciting as any young jazz troupe in memory. The groundbreaking trio (drummer Rob Turner, double bassist Nick Blacka and pianist Chris Illingworth) have truly created a new sound that draws from a wide range of seminal jazz artists (ranging from the Vince Guaraldi Trio to contemporary heroes Robert Glasper Trio); the three members of GoGo Penguin use a deep sense of composition, acoustic instrumentation, electronic touches (think Brian Eno and Moby) and melody to draw in listeners. GoGo Penguin’s latest album, “Man-Made Object,”

features 10 extraordinary instrumental selections. While the mesmerizing “Branches Break” and “”Surrender to Mountain” are the most accessible, tracks such as “Weird Cat,” “Quiet Mind” and the haunting piano-anchored ‘Gbfisysih’ also has an enormous power to evoke emotions. If you are bound for Coachella, make sure to catch GoGo Penguin at the festival on Saturday, April 23. Information: gogopenguin.co.uk/.

Artist: 7Horse Title: Livin’ in a Bitch of a World (7Horse Music Ltd.) You might like if you enjoy: Moreland & Arbuckle, dada, 7Horse

Tell me more: Blues-rock doesn’t get much more honest and stripped down than 7Horse. The duo (lead singer-drummer Phil Leavitt and guitarist-vocalist Joie Calio) backed by several other talented players perform songs that thrive on basic, straightforward riffs and deep grooves adorned with catchy choruses whose rich melodies

bring welcome layers to the material across the newly-released “Livin’ in a Bitch of a World.” The gritty ‘Two-Stroke Machine’ begins with a Rolling Stones-styled vibe bolstered by a soaring chorus, honest storytelling and wonderful blues-rock guitar riffs courtesy of Calio. Slide guitar fills the riveting “One Week” and Southwest blues of “Answer the Bell.” Elsewhere, the band’s hard-hitting and reworked take on the Bee Gees ‘Stayin’ Alive’ is truly an epic. “Livin’ in a Bitch of a World” cements the fact that 7Horse ranks with Moreland & Arbuckle as one of the contemporary blues-rock’s most mighty young voices. Information: 7HorseMusic.com.

Artist: Riddle & The Stars Title: New Coastline (Riddle & The Stars) You might like if you enjoy: The Fallen Stars, the Jayhawks, Dawes

Tell me more: An exceptional follow-up to their 2014 debut collaboration “This Is Happening,” the new album

from Riddle & The Stars titled “New Coastline” is truly a reason to celebrate the music-making union forged between Australian singer-songwriter Ben Riddle and Huntington Beach, California-based the Fallen Stars (husband-and-wife duo Bobbo and Tracy Barnes). All three singers are featured via memorable performances, with their blended voices providing an additional winning element across the disc (particularly on the beautiful Americana nugget “When We Ride”). Riddle brings a distinctive singer-songwriter touch to the proceedings, notably on the reflective folk rocker “Running Back to You” and yearning “Tracks.” Bobbo Barnes leads the collective through the rousing root’s rocker “I May Never Know” and an affecting take on the John Prine gem “Mexican Home.” Tracy Barnes sings the elegiac “Apples & Knives,” and the authentic country-styled “Valentine’s Day.” Information: the fallenstars.com or riddleandthestars.com.

Artist: The Bo-Keys

Title: Heartaches by the Number (Electraphonic Recording/Omnivore Recordings) You might like if you enjoy: St. Paul & the Broken Bones, James Hunter Six, Paul Rodgers’ “The Royal Sessions”

Tell me more: The fusion of Memphis soul, classic country and R&B burns bright across the Bo-Keys’ new album “Heartaches by the Numbers” (set for release on April 29). Singer Percy Wiggins and company never sound less than incredible on the 10-song set, which finds the ensemble mixing marvelous originals with heartfelt interpretations of material popularized by the likes of Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, Swamp Dogg and Ray Price. Perhaps the most impressive showcase of the Bo-Keys’ stunning hybrid is a version of Merle Haggard’s emotive “The Longer You Wait,” with the blend of country and soul offered up via an authentic and stirring performance of the tearjerker. By Desert Star StaffWhat happens when

a corporation’s leadership is engaged, talented and competent but so stuck in their ways that they can’t quite grasp the importance of acting as a strategic, forward-thinking team?

It could be time for drastic measures – so drastic that company vice presidents might be left mumbling, “What just happened?”

“Shake them up,” says Frank Granara, CEO of General Insulation Co. and co-author with Lorraine Grubbs of “Beyond the Executive Comfort Zone: Outrageous Tactics to Ignite Individual Performance” (www.executivecomfortzone.com).

“Don’t be afraid to get their attention in an over-the-top way, even if it means

pretending you’re Zeus – a very miffed Zeus.”

Granara never asks anyone to fire lightning bolts he wouldn’t himself. He once dressed as the top Greek god at a company training session – complete with blaring music and swirling clouds – and required his dubious vice presidents to dress as gods, too.

“I would have called it outside the box thinking, but I’m not even sure Frank has a box,” says Grubbs, the consultant who helped Granara design a series of six imaginative sessions that reinvigorated his company.

She and Granara say such extreme tactics may sound absurd, but they can snap executives out of their doldrums and inspire them to view daily decisions from

a different perspective.“Not every company

CEO will go to the extremes Frank did,” Grubbs says. “But they still can think creatively – and even outrageously – in figuring out ways to help their company leaders evolve into a high-performing team.”

The co-authors say some of the lessons they learned from the sessions that other CEOs can benefit from include:

• Place people in the right roles. Sometimes a job just isn’t the right fit for the individual. Rather than fire them, place them in a role that capitalizes on their strengths. At the conclusion of his company’s training sessions, Granara assigned 40 percent of his vice presidents to new positions that better matched their abilities and potential.

• Train first, then promote.

Often, high-performing employees are rewarded with promotions, but are woefully unprepared for their new duties. “Promoting people and then training them afterward is not the best way to develop leaders,” Granara says.

• There is little growth without discomfort. Most people prefer to keep everything as is once they become comfortable. That may get the job done, but improvement won’t happen unless people are confronted with situations that throw them off balance.

“Be proactive,” Grubbs says. “Companies that can get their leadership teams thinking strategically are rewarded with greater teamwork and a better bottom line.”

By Desert Star StaffSPRINGFIELD, Ill. - A move

to change Illinois’ birth certificate law is earning praise from a civil rights watchdog. According to the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, the change will help thousands of transgender residents in the state.

House Bill 6073, introduced by Rep. Greg Harris, D-Chicago, passed out of committee on Monday. Supporters argue it would update the law by removing a requirement that transgender people must have surgery in order to change the gender marker on their birth certificate.

John Knight, director of the LGBT and HIV Project for the ACLU of Illinois, said transgender people often can face discrimination when they are “outed” against their will. “

A birth certificate is one document that can end up revealing someone’s transgender status,” he said. “We know that transgender people face overwhelming discrimination in so many aspects of their lives, including employment. This helps reduce that possibility.”

Illinois hasn’t updated its birth certificate gender marker law since 1962. HB 6073 would use the same standard as the federal government for changing gender markers on passports. The bill is headed to the full House for a vote.

Also on Monday, a separate bill aimed at regulating how transgender students use Illinois school restrooms was sent down by lawmakers to a subcommittee. Knight said he’s hopeful that means House Bill 4474, introduced by Rep.

Tom Morrison, R-Palatine, will not move forward during this session. Knight has argued that the bill is discriminatory because it would deny transgender students access to gender-appropriate restrooms and would run afoul of federal civil rights protections.

“Title IX protects against discrimination against transgender kids,” he said, “and

this effectively would put every school district in Illinois at risk of losing their federal dollars.” This comes just a few weeks after North Carolina passed a law overriding local protections for LGBT people. Recently, South Dakota’s governor killed a similar bathroom regulation bill, although several other states are still considering like-minded legislation.

By Jack LyonsTheatre and Film Critic

Serendipity and timing definitely has a place in the world of show business and movies in particular. This past week I was fortunate to interview iconic international star of stage, screen and television, Irina Maleeva, who latest feature film “The Meddler”, starring Susan Sarandon, opens nationwide on April 22nd.

Maleeva, born in Bulgaria but who has lived in the United States for over 40 years, started her movie career at the tender age of 14 while living in Italy. She was discovered by famed filmmaker Federico Fellini and went on to work with some of the premiere filmmakers including Orson Welles.

Considering the recent dust-up at the 2016 Oscar ceremonies regarding the lack of diversity in the movie industry, to say nothing about the lack of roles for middle-age actors and beyond, the interview with Maleeva seemed like an interesting way to get a first-person perspective on this hot button topic.

Q: Hollywood and television are at long last acknowledging that the

cinema and TV industries are in a state of transition

when it comes to the subject of diversity in

the arts. What are your observations on the subject of work for people of color

with an emphasis on female actors of ‘a certain age’?

A: To be honest, I have mixed feelings about the subject. I favor diversity in the industry, of course. I’m a European woman who’s been a U.S. citizen for many years, and as an actor I applaud the industry for finally coming to grips with this issue. It’s been long overdue.”

Q:Tell me about all those references to the “La

Dolce Vida” lifestyle when you worked with Fellini in “Satyricon”, “Spirits From the Dead”, and “Roma”.

A: Yes, I worked with the great Fellini on those films. He was a film genius and a very nice man. I also worked opposite the brilliant Orson Welles in “The Merchant of Venice”. I’m sorry, however, to disappoint you regarding on-set gossip, but we were too busy just learning our lines and playing our parts. Of course I can’t speak for everyone during that wild era...(laughs)

Q: What was it like living and working in Rome

as young actors?A: It was a golden time

in the Italian cinema. The Via Veneto was the great street where you brushed elbows with celebrities and movie people all over the place. During that period, Italy was producing 300 plus films a year. Those were exciting times to be an actor.

Then the movies in Italy changed some twenty years ago and I haven’t made a film there in over ten years. European films now are chasing the dollars. They’re not making stories or character driven films as they used to do. Now, it’s films with an edge or all action.

Q: Just like today’s American movie industry.

A: Working in early American films I was usually cast as an Eastern European female with a heavy accent, even though I speak seven languages. I’ve been told that even my face has an accent, according to casting directors.

Q: How much has the American film industry vs. the European changed?

A: In Europe, it appears there are more opportunities

and good roles for actors who are over 60.

Q: And here in America?Female actors are

considered to be unemployable after thirty-five or so, with exceptions of course when it involves stars.

Q: But you’re still working today as an actor over sixty.

A: Yes, thank goodness, but not many people do what I do, have done, and can still do. I’m very fortunate. I came from an acting family. My mother was a successful Eastern Russia actress who began acting at age seven. She had a successful stage and film career. Later, she wrote several books on actresses in Hollywood.

Q: Speaking of working today, you have a new

movie called “The Meddler” opening nationwide this

month starring Susan Sarandon. What role

do you play in it?A: I play Angie, Susan’s

sister-in-law from New York. Susan’s character has lost her husband and I help her get through her new widow-grieving process. It’s a broad comic role. It was a wonderful experience working with

Susan and our amazing director Lorene Scafaria. Susan is such a generous and giving actor. I loved it.

Q:You also have a guest-starring role this spring

on David Duchovny’s NBC series “Aquarius” in a segment called “While My Guitar Gently Weeps

“. What’s that about?A: I play Vira, a sweet

Ukrainian lady who turns out to be a murderess and a con-woman who causes problems for Duchovny’s cop character who is pursuing the Manson Family. Russian actress Ludmila Velikaia, who lives in San Diego, and I play two women in their sixties who are insurance fraud scam artists. We had a ball doing it.

You know, getting serious for a minute, David is an interesting and very caring man. He shared a story with me as how he rescued a dog he found lying on the road one day on his way to the set. He stopped, put the animal in his car and drove it to a vet hospital, saving its life. The word ‘tohovny’ means a person with a lot of soul. David certainly has that. How many people stop on their way to work to rescue an animal lying on a road?

Q: Irina, I know you have a one-woman show called

“Illusions”, a musical memoir of a life well

lived that you wrote and performed at the Hudson

Theatre in Hollywood last year. Do you have any plans to take it on the road somewhere?A: I would love to, but I

don’t have a theatrical agent to represent me in such a venture. It takes a lot of planning, getting a theatre, advance bookings, ticket sales, finding a good musical director. It’s a lot of work, but hugely satisfying.
