Story and Photos by Pat Krause The 3rd annual Queen of

the Desert awards fundraiser party was held on June 1st at the Palm Springs Renaissance Hotel ballroom. Six lovelies vied for the top prize of being named Queen of the Desert. Other prizes were given to these six professional divas in Drag. This was a lip-sync competition with Ethylina Canne and Bella da ball- Brian Wanzek as emcees. The event has become so popular that they were sold out early and had to turn many away as they had reached the maximum of 700 seats. A few had been standing room only guests who found their way into the ballroom. They will have to find a larger venue for next year as the phones were ringing off the wall with people trying to get tickets.

The judges for the competition were Delta Work, the well-known female impersonator-James “GYPSY” Haake, and Maude Chapeau

and Dottie du Bois. Co-chairs were Steven Henke and Steve Kaufer. The skits were so professionally done this year. Maude and Dottie started the show singing and dancing. They have been performing to raise money for Desert Aids Project for years and have raised over one million dollars for DAP. The Emcee, Ethylina Canne, came on stage as a Marily Monroe look-a-like and sang Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend. Bella da Ball aka Brian Wanzek announced all the donations and which contestant they were for. CEO

David Brinkman spoke to the crowd about the wonderful work done at the DAP headquarters in Palm Springs. He also spoke of the quilt that was made up of 1920 pieces with photos and autographs that will be auctioned off in Dec.

The contest started with Tommi Rose and Jazmyn Echelon-Simone. Pinkie Meringue Shimmer came

on stage as Lucy Arnaz and did the show where Lucy got drunk doing a TV ad for vitamins from the Lucy Show.

Mystic Befierce Miller, Sheena Wolfe and Anita Rose were next. Each had a special skit with costumes for the lip-sync show. There was a short intermission before contestants did a costume change for their second performance. The finale was the evening gown presentation before the awards.

Mystic Befierce Miller was crowned, Fierce and Fabulous, Anita Rose was announced as, The Show Stopper, while Sheena Wolfe was, The Original. Fan favorite was Pinkie Meringue Shimmer, and Jazmyn Simone-Echelon was given the title of Miss Personality and Dressed to Thrill. Tommie Rose garnered the most titles with Dazzler, Funny Bone, Talent and QUEEN of the DESERT.

A special performance by Darrell Tucci, Chief Development Officer, as

Ivanna Cannoli with, I’m Not Pregnant, I’m Just Fat, performance. He only decided to do the show after

a large amount of money was raised for him to perform. Looking forward to next year already for this fun night.

his parents for teaching him that. The Air Museum teaches and shows our younger generation about all the wars we have fought to stay free.

Mgr. Fred Bell welcomed the people to start the day.

Loretta Siani sang the National Anthem and Chaplin Lt. Col. Ronald Prosise gave the invocation. Congressman Raul Ruiz gave Memorial Day remarks and accepted the Purple Heart of Lt. Owen B. Coffman that was donated to the Museum by Mr and Mrs. Own Keiley. Palm Springs Mayor Rob Moon presented two Gold Star Mothers who lost sons in recent battles and honored the other 25 who lost their lives in the service of our country from our area. People stood along side the B-25 as it was towed out of the Hangar. P-51, P-63 and F4U fighter planes performed a missing man formation and flew along with the B-25 for the flower drop.

degenerative brain condition. His boxing career is believed to have played a significant role in bringing on the disease.

Alongside his successes in the ring, Ali became famous as a champion of the Black community, as well as for his motivational speeches and sharp wit. Some of his most well-known and quoted lines include “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee,” and “The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life”.

Born Cassius Clay Jr., Ali changed his name when he converted to Islam in 1975.

Ali’s achievements in the ring made him an icon, but the fleet-footed boxer was known as much for his quick-witted putdowns as the speed of his fists.

The boxer became notorious for his sharp one-liners; often predicting which round his opponent would fall in.

The Kentucky-born fighter also came up against one of the most powerful opponents of all in the late 1960s – “Big power America.”

When US legislators desperate to cast a wider recruitment net for the Vietnam War relaxed draft

eligibility standards, it pulled Ali (still known as Clay) towards the frontline of a conflict he didn’t believe in.

Never one to waver in his beliefs, the then 25-year-old stood up and refused to be inducted into the army on religious grounds in 1967.

“My conscience won’t let me shoot my brother, or some darker people, or some poor hungry people in the mud for big power America,” Ali said at the time.

“And shoot them for what? They never called me n****r, they never lynched me, they didn’t put no dogs on me, they didn’t rob me of my nationality, rape and kill my mother and

father... How can I shoot them poor people? Just take me to jail,” Ali said in an interview broadcast on television.

Ali’s anti-war stance made him a power symbol of dissent against the conflict at a time when many people still supported the US’ involvement in Southeast Asia.

His decision also brought many detractors, however, and saw him stripped of his heavyweight title and slapped with a five-year prison sentence for evading military service.

He served no time due to the appeals process, and his conviction was overturned in 1971.

In what is still regarded as one of the most epic bouts in heavyweight boxing, Ali reclaimed his title from George

Foreman in 1974 in the historic “Rumble in the Jungle” in Zaire.

He would reclaim the title once again against Leon Spinks in late 1978 after losing it to the Missouri brawler months earlier.

Muhammad Ali will be buried in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. The city plans to hold a memorial service on Friday at a sports arena in downtown Louisville.

It was also confirmed that Ali’s funeral will be held on Friday at the KFC Yum! Center in the city where he was born, Louisville, Kentucky.

The funeral is scheduled to begin at 2 pm and will be open to the general public. The arena has a capacity of over 22,000 people.

By Janice GoughThere

are far more influences on stock holdings than just sales, earnings and

debt measures. Various changes in the economy can affect your portfolio, as well. The smart investor knows to keep an eye on all economic indicators, which can signal a change in the markets. While a degree in economics isn’t necessary, understanding how these various economic measurements influence investment returns is a vital lesson for investors. Having knowledge of these basic concepts can mean the

difference between big gains or a hefty portfolio loss.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

Gross Domestic Product or GDP, can be a huge influence on your investment returns. Basically, GDP is the total amount of services and goods produced in a given country’s borders. This includes all of private and public consumption, government outlays, investments and exports less imports that occur within a defined territory. This measurement of a nation’s economic health impacts the up or down of the stock market returns. When an economy is healthy and growing, it is expected that businesses will report better earnings and growth, while a lower measurement can have the opposite effect on stock prices as businesses begin to suffer. Housing gains and industrial production will also be affected by this indicator.

Unemployment Rate/Jobs Report

Another very strong indicator that affects the stock markets is the unemployment rate. Like GDP, rate of employment illustrates the development and the strength of the economy. The Jobs Report is reported monthly by the U.S. Board of Labor and accounts for approximately

80% of the workers who produce the entire gross domestic product of the United States. The statistic is used to assist government policy makers and economists in determining the current state of the economy and in predicting future levels of economic activity. These reports are critical measures of the economy’s overall health.

The Consumer Price/ Produce Price Indexes

Both the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) measure the price changes of consumer

goods and services of goods, in more than 200 different

categories. In economics, a commodity is a marketable

item produced to satisfy wants or needs. The CPI data

contains prices for homes, energy, food and medical

items that people use on a daily basis, while the Producer

Price Index (PPI) tracks the average price of over 10,000 commodities that companies

will use to transform into finished goods (Food products, Live stock and Meat, Energy,

Metals; precious and industrial, Palm oil, Rubber and Wool, to name a few). Higher PPI numbers could prevent a

firm from expanding or hiring more workers, as the cost of producing goods increases. For investors, periods of high consumption and producer

inflation can spell the death for corporate profits. The

stock market can rise or fall based on the signals these

two indicators provide. Higher consumer prices for basic goods can mean that there won’t be any leftover money to buy discretionary items, like Starbucks lattes.

U.S. consumer prices recorded their biggest increase in more than three years in April as gasoline and rents rose, pointing to a steady inflation build-up that could give the Federal Reserve ammunition to raise interest rates later this year. The Bottom Line is that the

Fed has a 2 percent inflation target and tracks an inflation measure which is currently at 1.6 percent. The rise in prices in April is likely to be welcomed by Fed officials who have persistently expressed concerns about inflation running below its target.

Economic Indicators Forecast Future Trends

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq.

Dear California Legislature: Each year you address HOA

bills which often respond to specific narrow issues or complaints. Except for the California Law Revision Commission’s excellent 2014 revision of the Davis-Stirling Act, major helpful changes in the Act have been rare in recent years. May I suggest some ways you could help California HOAs?

Reduced quorum: Larger associations often struggle to make membership decisions due to low participation. Associations could govern themselves more successfully with an automatic reduction of quorum to 25% when the first attempted director election failed for lack of participation.

Eliminating Proxies: Proxies are a frequent dispute issue and are unnecessary, since members can vote in advance and by mail. Banning proxies, except to help attain quorum, would help.

Allow electronic HOA voting. HOAs are the only variety of California

corporation which cannot vote electronically. In an age when we buy airplane tickets on smartphones, why cannot HOA members participate by voting on line?

Require sellers to provide governing documents to HOA buyers within 5 days of contract – without buyers requesting it. Most buyers do not review CC&Rs, bylaws, and rules until long after taking ownership. Associations can easily provide the governing documents (which increasingly are on HOA web sites). Better informed new members make for better neighbors.

Penalize managers who do not reveal they are not “Certified.” Managers must under Business and Professions Code 11504 disclose if they are not “Certified” under Section 11502. However many managers fail to comply, and there is no penalty.

Require minimal board education: Florida requires directors to commit to some minimal level of education. California should require some minimal (maybe three hours?) basic board education.

A “small associations” Act: It is unreasonable that

the Davis-Stirling Act applies equally to the 5 unit association as the 5,000. The small ones need simpler laws.

Eliminate cumulative voting: Cumulative voting is allowed in the law and typically in older governing documents. It is confusing, allows election game playing, and should be eliminated.

Disqualify directors or candidates if they are 90 days late on assessments. Delinquent members should not serve on or run for the board. Adding a new subpart “g” to Civil 5100 would stop this.

Preserving part of HOA’s assessment lien from bank foreclosure: Why is it fair for a bank can wait a year or more to foreclose, and then wipe out the association’s assessment lien? Many states protect 6-9 months of assessments from foreclosure. California lags behind on this issue.

Make the priority of delinquent assessment payments non-waivable. Some collection companies insist that as part of a delinquency payment plan, the member must waive the rule that payments must first be applied to the assessments and last to the collection

vendor’s fees. This is wrong, and should be stopped.

Deny attorney fees to a party which refuses to mediate. California Association of Realtors contracts say that a party not offering or accepting mediation cannot recover attorney fees if they win the lawsuit. Applying this concept to association disputes would encourage efforts to settle.

Expand the conflicts of interest listed in Civil 5350. Some directors demand to review confidential or privileged documents concerning their past or present dispute with the association. This abuse of the director’s position should be banned.

Those are my ideas – what are yours? Write me: [email protected].

By Desert Star StaffAs Donald Trump’s

presidential campaign turns from “funny to scary,” a Canadian animation studio told the press about an online series it created to take a satirical look at what goes on inside Trump’s head, while exploring what US mainstream media avoids.

Using stop motion animation, Toronto based Cuppa Coffee Studio have produced “Trump Unhinged” – a satirical series that literally shows you what’s going on inside the head of the Republican Party’s presumptive nominee.

A new short will be released each day throughout June, and there are certainly plenty of surprises in store under Trump’s golden mop.

From monkeys to popcorn to pigeon poo – we won’t spill any more beans but, as Chris Morris, Cuppa’s long standing

Creative Director and post-production guru, told the press, the series comes with a healthy dollop of a “Pythonesque sense of the ridiculousness.”

With his comments attracting more and more followers, while at the same time alienating others, not to mention the media circus surrounding him, Trump is “ripe” for such a treatment.

“There is just so much silliness surrounding Trump, as animators we couldn’t resist the opportunity to put our own spin on the Trump story,” Morris said. “When you read something like Eric Trump saying everything his father touches turns to gold… as an artist, you just want to see where that takes you.”

With The Donald’s birthday coming up on June 14, we’ve also been reassured that there’s a “special birthday animation” for him.

Sheer ridiculousnessWith a wealth of

“inspiring material” to draw upon, Morris and Cuppa’s Executive Producer, Adam Shaheen, decided to bring the “sheer ridiculousness of the Trump Circus” to life using stop motion animation.

“I’ve heard Americans say that the Trump campaign has gone from funny to scary,” said Morris. “I think, as Canadians and animators, it’s our duty to try and make it funny again.”

A team of ten has been working on the project since April to pull this off. It all began with a clay sculpt of Trump’s head created by the studio’s sculptor, Tony Manco.

Tony’s a master at creating caricatured sculpts and his outrageous Trump head was really the inspiration for the ‘Unhinged’ part of our animated series,” Morris explained.

“Once we had this puppet

version of Trump to look at and hold in our hands, we began to pass around ideas and imagine what kind of animations we could create,” he added.

With a bank of Trump’s images to work with, Manco focused on “the most outrageous expressions” for his creation.

“Tony knew he had to focus on the eyes and mouth because Trump is always pulling bizarre faces with his expressive eyes and mouth,” Morris explained. “Tony decided to play up his teeth because they seem to feature so prominently in his best expressions, where he bites his lip almost like Trump has to stop himself from saying something he shouldn’t.”

“If you think about it, that may be even scarier to think about than what Trump has stopped himself from saying!” joked Morris.

Trump was also given “big Sylvester Stallone lips” to communicate Trump’s “fighter attitude.”

Think before you speakWith the “strange head

of Trump” before them and a wealth of “epic” quotes and comments to draw upon, Shaheen had “a flash of inspiration to have his head blow open.”

“That idea led us to thinking about what is inside Trump’s head, how he sees things, where do his ideas come from,” Morris said.

To shoot the thousands of frames required, three

pounds of blue jelly beans and endless cans of gold spray paint were employed. A small fortune was also spent on gold chocolate coins.

While there’s plenty of absurdity and fun in store for viewers, there are also more serious undertones, which are intended not only for viewers, but also for the Trump campaign itself.

“If there is a message it might be, ‘Think before you speak.’” Morris explained to the press, adding that the team also hopes to occupy a gap that sorely needs to be filled in the ever expanding media circus surrounding the election.

“Seriously, it’s a bit of fun that politics often lacks,” Morris says. “But we think it cleverly highlights parts of the US Election and expands the conversation in a way that the mainstream media like the New York Times doesn’t.”

With over 200 international awards to their name, Cuppa Coffee is no stranger to the world of animation, having worked on numerous productions that include Celebrity Death Match, Jo Jo’s Circus, Bruno, and the Banana Bunch.

This isn’t the Cuppa Coffee team’s first foray into the world of politics either. In 2013, they created an animation inspired by then-Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and the madness and media circus surrounding the out of control mayor.

Medical examinations of the pop artist, who was found dead on April 21 at his Minnesota estate, revealed an overdose of opioid painkillers, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. the press reported that he is “close to the investigation”

but was not authorized to speak to the media

As Prince left no will, the wealth management company Bremer Trust, was appointed temporary special administrator of his estate by a Carver County judge in early May.

Some of the artist’s fans are not convinced by the official explanation, pointing out that Prince was a strict vegan and Jehovah’s Witness, who did not smoke or even drink coffee.

By Lisa Respers France CNNAmber Heard is fighting

back against claims that her allegations of abuse by Johnny Depp were made to gain an upper hand in their pending divorce.

On Sunday, The Wrap published a guest column from comedian and Depp friend Doug Stanhope in which he alleged that Depp told him and Stanhope’s girlfriend, Bingo, that “Amber was now going to leave him, threatening to lie

about him publicly in any and every possible duplicitous way if he didn’t agree to her terms.”

“Blackmail is what I would imagine other people might put it, including the manner in which he is now being vilified,” Stanhope wrote.

The Wrap reported on Tuesday that a lawyer for Heard, Peter Sample, has sent a letter to the publication saying “allegations against Ms. Heard are absolutely and unequivocally false” and that the blackmail

claim “has no basis in reality and is nothing but the typical celebrity muckraking for profit.”

“Sample demanded a retraction of the article, calling the claim defamatory and ‘outrageous,’” The Wrap reported. “TheWrap will respond to the letter through its legal counsel.”

Heard, who recently filed for divorce from Depp after 15 months of marriage, was granted a temporary restraining order against the “Pirates of

the Caribbean” star Friday. In her complaint filed with

the court, Heard alleges, “During the entirety of our relationship, Johnny has been verbally and physically abusive to me.

“Johnny has had a long-held and widely-acknowledged public and private history of drug and alcohol abuse,” she continues. “He has a short fuse.”

She also included photos which appear to show her with a bruised face

to support her claims. But Depp filed a

memorandum with the court in which he rejected those claims of domestic violence, saying, “Amber is attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.”

Depp told Rolling Stone three years ago he has used alcohol as “self-medication over the years just to calm the circus.” He said then that he is not an alcoholic.

Awareness Month for Orcas as They Return to Washington’s Waters

Huge California wildfire threatens homes, evacuations ordered

By Desert Star StaffSACRAMENTO, Calif. - Oil

and gas facilities, including storage wells such as the one that created a disaster this winter at Aliso Canyon, will have to undergo rigorous new inspections if a groundbreaking proposal released Tuesday by the California Air Resources Board is adopted.

The federal government just issued similar rules for new and modified equipment, but California is going one step further and requiring them for all surface facilities, existing and new -- including those that are offshore. However, Tim O’Connor, director of the California Oil and Gas Program at the nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund, said the state

left in a dangerous loophole: Companies that pass several inspections in a row can move to annual inspections after that.

“When you embed these requirements into the rule, you actually create an incentive for operators not to find leaks,” he said. “So they can have no leaks and then move to a cheaper, less rigorous annual inspection requirement.”

The public comment period is open now and the board will vote on this issue in late July. Representatives of the oil and gas industry have maintained that the new rules are unnecessary and expensive. But O’Connor said the cost of preventing widespread gas leaks is minuscule compared to the toll they take on people’s

health and the environment. In the Los Angeles area alone, he said, there are 5,000 oil and gas-producing sites that can leak toxic, cancer-causing compounds and methane gas into the air.

“When we add up those leaks,” he said, “actually what’s coming out of California is about three times that of Aliso Canyon every single year.”

Ironically, these new rules would not have prevented the blowout at Aliso Canyon because that failure occurred underground. The state Department of Oil and Gas is working on new rules that would apply to subsurface equipment.

The proposed rules are online at arb.ca.gov.

By Desert Star StaffSEATTLE – June is Orca

Awareness Month, the time of year when killer whales

return to the inland waters of western Washington.

The endangered residents of Northwest orca pods face a

number of threats, the most severe being a shortage of food, which is mainly Chinook salmon.

“Our efforts are primarily

to contribute to salmon restoration and the awareness of that linkage between the Chinook salmon and the health of the southern residents,” says Howard Garrett, co-founder of the Orca Network, located on Whidbey Island. “So, that’s a lot of what Orca Awareness Month will do.”

Washington state first designated June as Orca Awareness Month in 2013.

The Orca Network has focused on four dams on the Lower Snake River that Garrett says are preventing young Snake River salmon from making it to the Pacific Ocean.

Garrrett says the removal of those dams would increase salmon populations along the Pacific coast, providing much needed nutrition for orcas.

Orcas also face other threats, including toxins such as PCBs that are absorbed through the mammal’s blubber.

However, after a five-year period in the late 1990s when local orca populations diminished by 20 percent, Garrett says the northwest whales have experienced a baby boom in the last year-and-a-half, with 10 whales having been born.

He says that’s a good sign for the pods that visit Washington, which are unique compared to other orcas.

“They maintain their cultural bonds and stay with each other and adhere to basically the rules of behavior, of diet, of mating, of associations, and of their calls,” he explains.

The orcas around Washington are part of a family or clan called Southern Resident Killer Whales. They were placed on the Endangered Species list in 2005.

By Desert Star StaffMandatory evacuations

have been ordered in Southern California, as three brush fires quickly spread on Saturday, one of which is moving dangerously close to homes in the Calabasas area, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

Witnesses reported that one fire began near 23062 Mulholland Highway at around 4:30 pm local time. It was

originally said to affect two acres, but is now moving towards residential areas.

Three water-dropping helicopters have been dispatched to battle the fire.

Meanwhile on Saturday, another blaze overtook the city of Temecula and scorched 35 acres, and much smaller fire was recorded in the Santa Clarita area affecting one-eighth of an acre.

Local Agoura High School on West Driver Avenue is currently being evacuated.

So far, only several structures are reported to have been damaged, but

a more specific estimate is unavailable at this time, according to fire officials.

Flares burn off excess gas at an oil production facility. On Tuesday California pro-posed new inspections to prevent leaks. (Environmental Defense Fund

By Desert Star StaffPLASTER CITY, Calif.

– Agents with the El Centro Sector Border Search Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR) unit rescued 10 people who illegally entered the United States Friday morning.

The incident occurred approximately 12 miles north of

Plaster City at around 8:25 a.m. when Border Patrol dispatchers received a call from the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) dispatch. ICSO received a distress call from a man claiming to be part of a group of illegal immigrants lost in the desert without water or food.

Sherriff’s office

dispatchers were able to provide an approximate location of the man and his companions based on cellphone tower triangulation near the Superstition Mountain Bombing Range.

BORSTAR agents were notified and immediately began to search the area near the

coordinates provided by the Sheriff’s office personnel.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. agents located two of the men and continued searching for the remainder of the group. Agents were able to locate the remaining eight people at approximately 10:20 a.m.

BORSTAR agents treated all ten people for dehydration with three men needing intravenous fluids.

“The smuggling of human beings often subjects its victims to dangerous and harsh conditions. Inclement weather and inhospitable terrain are not important considerations to smugglers who place an emphasis on profit over their victim’s safety,” said Chief Patrol Agent Rodney S. Scott of the El Centro Sector Border Patrol.

After treating the group, agents determined that one of the men was a United States citizen and another man was a permanent resident. The rest of the group was composed of four men and two women all

citizens of Mexico, a 15-year-old male juvenile and one male citizen of Honduras.

The group is in Border Patrol custody pending further investigation.

The El Centro Sector’s Community Awareness Campaign is a simple and effective program to raise public awareness on the indicators of crime and other threats. We encourage public and private sector employees to remain vigilant and play a key role in keeping our country safe. Please report any suspicious activity to the Border Community Threat Hotline at 1-800-901-2003.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation’s borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

By Desert Star StaffLOS ANGELES - On

Wednesday, a day when a murder-suicide shooting shut down UCLA, and one day before National Gun Violence Awareness Day, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to have LAPD work with a nonprofit to identify “bad apple” gun dealers who sell the majority of guns used in crimes. Los

Angeles will now become the only city in California to trace gun sales in this manner.

District 2 City Council member Paul Krikorian said the information will help police make better use of the purchasing data they already collect.

“LAPD acquires trace data but we don’t have the manpower, we don’t have the reporting process to compile

that into data that can be used in making policies regarding the source of these guns,” he said.

The city now will look to fund a study run by researchers with a company called Crime Gun Solutions, which just performed a similar study for Chicago,

a city notorious for its sky-high murder rate.

Krikorian said that study found that fully 90 percent of the Windy City’s illegal guns came from just four dealers.

“In three of the four cases, by targeting the attention on these gun dealers, they

changed their practices and started hewing much more closely to the law,” he added.

Los Angeles reported 199 murders in 2015 and has a storage locker crammed with 5,000 to 8,000 guns seized during criminal investigations.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg is safe from cyber-attacks. The billionaire has had his (non-Facebook) social networking accounts temporarily taken over by the hacker group OurMine, who bragged about it in the hijacked feeds.

Tweeting to its 41,000 Twitter followers, the group claimed Sunday to have compromised Zuck’s LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest accounts. Some were apparently defaced purely for bragging rights. It is not known whether any other accounts or email also suffered, according to Engadget.

It has not been

independently confirmed whether Zuckerberg’s Instagram was also among the compromised accounts.

The hacker group told everyone the LinkedIn password hack of 2012 was to blame, revealing Zuckerberg’s alleged password – an embarrassingly simple “dadada”, allegedly among the more than 100 million stolen in that hack. That same year, some 6.5 million passwords for the popular job network were leaked online.

But on May 18 this year, LinkedIn had to break the bad news of a much more massive hack. A 117-million treasure trove of passwords had just been posted online.

Coachella Valley’s first law school opened.

“We had an idea for a law school, we just didn’t have a place to go,” said founder and KMIR legal expert, John Patrick Dolan. “But somehow or another we persevered and we now have a beautiful campus. And we’re just as proud as we can be of these 11 graduates.”

And four years later, the California Desert Trial Academy is honoring it’s first graduating class.

“You are part of that noble profession today,” said prosecutor and college professor Sue Steding. “So may all of my hopes for you, all of my prayers for you, go with you today as we say goodbye to this relationship and by the end of the year, we’ll be peers in the practice of law.”

“It’s been four very long years and we’re very happy to be here,” said law school graduate Jennifer Madison. “You don’t really know what you’re getting into when you go to law school and looking back from my first day to where I am now, it’s been really, really rewarding.”

It marks a shift in opportunity for those who want practice law without leaving the valley.

“I’m a third generation here in the desert and to me, it’s a phenomenal thing that we have upper education law school here in the valley for students,” said Madison.

“Many of you will stay here and practice in this community,” said Judge Harold Hopp to the graduates and onlookers. “You’ll make a difference in Riverside County and in particular the Coachella Valley.

Dolan served as the day’s MC, reminding the graduates of what boxing legend Mohammed Ali said. “One of the most important things I heard Ali say was this: Don’t count the days, make the days count.”

And while graduates must pass the state bar exam to practice, they became part of Coachella Valley history Sunday.

“First of all, congratulations on being number one,” said Judge Hopp. “It’s a great thing to be number one. No one else in the world will be the first graduating class.” Source KMIR

By Kitty AlvaradoDESERT HOT SPRINGS,

Ca. -A member of Five Star Gym in Desert Hot Springs, emailed You Ask. We Investigate. ® desk wanting to know why two medical marijuana dispensaries were allowed to open next to a gym with a daycare.

We spoke with the mayor of Desert Hot Springs, Scott Matas, who tells us both facilities are in compliance with city laws. And the dispensaries say those laws are strict.

“We are licensed, we have a permit so during that process you have to get city approval, state approval and they do inspections,” says Jamie Lyn Sese, the assistant manager of All About Bud.

We also visited the gym,

did not call ahead, so they were not able to air out any of the rooms, and we did not smell marijuana. The manager of the gym says he has not received complaints.

“I’m here Monday through Friday 9 to 5 I don’t ever really smell marijuana and the daycare is actually a separate unit,” says Kyle Impelman.

The owners of Green Pearl also allowed us to go inside their facility, again we did not call ahead. There was no smell. They explained how they keep any marijuana odors from escaping.

“We have requirements with the city that we have to follow so we have charcoal filters not only in our ceiling but we also keep them throughout as well as we also added additional

air purifiers ... they have different foam and insulation when we sealed our rooms and everything to help prevent some of that odor as well,” says owner Nicole Salisbury.

And both dispensaries comply with state laws that prohibit smoking on inside or on the property.

“You’re only allowed to take your medication, leave,

you can’t even smoke in the parking lot not in your car,” says Salisbury.

And there are other reasons they want to keep the smell in.

“Our jars that we place our flower in they’re high vacuum-sealed it’s to maintain the odor out and it’s to maintain the freshness of our flowers,” says Sese.

Matas also says the

law requires for dispensaries to be at least 600 feet from schools, private daycare facilities do not apply adding that if anyone has a complaint they should go to the city.

The manager of the gym also says they listen to all complaints and just want their customers to be happy. Source KMIR

Whereas your main gift has been instinct, intuition, a higher super-human level of instinct emerges. It will provide you with greater inner strength and a new faith. Many will be surprised as you become more easygoing, compassionate, concerned for others (not just yourself). A greater belief in yourself also comes forth due to an anchoring of new spiritual ideals. Your identity deepens. Don’t let divine discontent upend you.

Idealism is part of your nature along with adaptability and flexibility. These virtues further develop in coming years. As you attempt to always keep the peace, you might discover you’ve lost knowledge of your deepest hopes and wishes. You must find them again. Connections with friends must always have a spiritual basis or you become dissatisfied. You are to develop the arts for you are the Art of Living itself.

What does your intuition tell you about current world trends in business, the arts, humanity, education, politics? In coming years you will develop a deep creativity and vision leading you to the arts, media, things of service and charitable. Work on maintaining clear direction lest goals and your calling in

life are lost. You’re better than perfect. And you’re responsible. Know these things. Allow no misconceptions of self to be nurtured.

It’s important to be practical with goals. You have a deep inner faith. It’s good to consider what you believe and why. Where did the concepts come from? It would be good to study different religions, or to even enter a seminary, becoming a minister or pastor. Higher education offers involvement with religious, philosophical or artistic fields. Travel beckons too, but here you must be careful healthwise. Compassion becomes your teacher.

Are you experiencing spiritual longing, deep sensitivity, fantasies, ecstasy, warrior dreams? If not now, later. In the meantime, something from the past - a relationship, love, person - seems to be important once again. However, you choose not to contact or connect with them - a mistake. Where before the boundaries were blurred, you both have grown. Boundaries are intact now. Careful with money. Give it, don’t loan it. Love more.

So often Virgo gives more than they’re able to receive.

They seek a soul mate, one linked to them psychically. They see potential, instead of reality at times, seeking others as they wish them to be, not as they are. Sometimes Virgos want to save or be saved (from themselves). These are all developmental stages. They can be confusing and difficult (for a time). Until you realize your potential extraordinary talents.

Daily plans, agendas and affairs (work) become so fluid you may not know where you are at times. All routines seem to float out the door, replaced by chaos, confusion and helplessness. Know that when chaos comes around, it’s announcing a coming new harmony. Rearrange everything in your environments. Tend to health methodically. Interact with the animal, plant and mineral kingdoms with awareness. They bring a new order into your life.

When people use the word drama it’s usually disparaging, judgmental. However, some signs truly have dramatic things occurring relentlessly. We actually have little choice in the matter of our lives and behaviors. We have little choice in how people react and respond to us. Those experiencing drama in their lives are living life deeply, fully,

creatively and with passion. It’s just their time. Your time is now.

Was home, family, relatives, mom, dad, family life as a child complex? Were (are) you sensitive, free spirited, idealistic, philosophical? Do you need at this time to set limits? Do you long for a new home and sense of place? Do you alternate between being social while also seeking solitude? Do you at times isolate yourself? Is family challenging? And do you have many inflated dreams? A new identity will appear in the next eighteen months. With a new path.

Visualize all that you want to be and do, your future, where you’re called to live, the interior and exterior of your (next) home, the environments calling to you, the gardens and kitchen. Do this on a grand and detailed scale. This creates a magnetic field and what you envision (if it is yours) comes into manifestation. Then you can decide your true wants/needs. We become what we deeply imagine, we express what we can create, we encourage what we love. Do these with confidence.

It’s important to be balanced about money - not too strict, not too lax. It’s important to

know the value of yourself and your work, presenting this to the world. Others may attempt to undervalue your worth and value. Follow your intuition and instincts concerning your use of money. Honor all debts. Value others and their work. Tell them. Do not gloss over monetary details. Be generous. However, care for yourself. This is practical.

A great sensitivity has befallen Pisces. It’s as if you live in a dream - someone else’s, actually. Others see you through their own projections. This is hurtful. Reality for you isn’t what reality is for others. Tiredness overcomes you often. At times, dizziness, too. Tend to health very carefully. Moods come and go. Sleep more. Calcium needs Vitamin D (lots of it) to be absorbed. Magnesium helps you sleep. Begin painting. Neptune has come home.

Mia Wasikowska once again plays Alice in Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” based very, very loosely on the book of the same name by Lewis Carroll. Screenwriter Linda Woolverton (“Beauty and the Beast” and “The Lion King”) uses the colorful characters created by Carroll, then concocts a freewheeling story of her own. This time out Alice is a grown woman who is the captain of her late father’s ship. When she returns to London, following a harrowing escape at sea, she is informed by her rejected suitor and owner of the company she works for that she will no longer be in charge of the vessel.

Faced with a personal crisis she encounters the blue butterfly, Absolem (voiced by the late Alan Rickman of “Harry Potter” fame). He informs her that her dear friend of yesteryear, the Mad Hatter

(Johnny Depp), is indeed going mad with depression over the loss of his family. He is certain that they are still alive but he doesn’t know how to find them. Absolem urges Alice to return to Underland (Wonderland) to help the Hatter. She accepts the challenge and follows the butterfly by leaping head first through the looking glass. Back in the magical realm of “Wonderland” she is reunited with the countless characters from her youthful past--the white rabbit, Cheshire cat, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee and of course the not so nice Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) and her nicer sister, the White Queen (Anne Hathaway). Newly added to the mix is Time (Sacha Baron Cohen). And while time can be your enemy, he might also turn out to be your reluctant friend.

The film is visually stunning

with colorful, imaginative sets and costumes. Modern kids who love Marvel Comic thrills will appreciate the on-screen action sequences in the movie, while parents who savored the Carroll classic in their youth may long for the mimsy-whimsical language of the nonsensical original.

The film, 1 hour and 53 minutes in length, is rated PG for fantasy action, peril and some language. The story line is complicated, but two youngsters I talked with after the movie (about 7 or 9) really enjoyed it.

If you see “Alice Through the Looking Glass” at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood you will be able to immerse yourself in the mesmerizing world of Underland (AKA Wonderland) even before the movie begins as your watch their all-new light and projection show. After the

movie step downstairs where you can take a good, look at an exclusive display of props and costumes used in the making of the movie. For more information or to order tickets ahead of time go to 1-800-DISNEY6 or online at www.elcapitantickets.com. After the movie visit the adjacent Disney gift shop and check out the ‘wonder-land-ful’ toys like Alice and Mad Hatter figures and plush toys like the Cheshire cat and white rabbit.

The film runs now through June 12. Then on June 17 through August 7, check out Disney Pixar’s “Finding Dory” at the El Capitan which will have a stage show before the film called “The Bubble Guy” described as “a breathtaking bubble extravaganza.” After the film there will be an interactive and educational exhibit from Aquarium of the Pacific..

••••••••••••••Come and meet

those dancing feet of the Broadway musical sensation “42nd Street,” now at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre through June 19th only.

“42nd Street” is a toe-tapping, song-filled treat--an ageless tribute to Broadway, Broadway musicals and the dreams of all who have tap-danced their hearts out in a Broadway show. It’s an ageless show that not only has legs--it has countless tap dancing feet. It’s also a show filled to the brim with enduring song classics like “42nd Street,” “ “I Only Have

Eyes For You,” “”We’re In The Money,” “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” and the Oscar winning hit “Lullaby of Broadway,” all written by Harry Warren (music) and Al Dubin (lyrics.)

And wow! The opening is unforgettable as the curtain slowly rises, revealing what seems like hundreds of tap dancing feet. Young dancers have come together to audition for an all new show under the direction of Broadway legend Julian Marsh (Matthew J. Taylor). Peggy Sawyer (Caitlin Ehlinger) newly arrived in NYC from Allentown, Pa. has come late to audition, but catches the eye not only of the show’s young tenor Billy Lawlor (Blake Stadnik.) but Julian Marsh as well. She also immediately clashes with the star, Dorothy Brock (Kaitlin Lawrence) and as fate would have it, when an accident befalls the haughty star, young Peggy might leap out of the chorus and into the leading role.. Love, comedy and toe-tapping music all come together in this rousing, fun-filled razzle dazzle revival at the Pantages.

“42nd Street,” at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre, 6233 Hollywood Blvd. (just east of Vine St.), now through June 19th only. In 2001, aged two, the newly certified FEMA Search and Rescue dog was deployed on her first ever mission to assist in the search and rescue operation following the attack on the World Trade Center. Accompanied by her handler Denise Corliss, Bretagne searched the rubble for 10 days looking first for survivors, and then remains.

In a statement from Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) where she received her training, a teammate said that even on her first deployment to ground zero Bretagne performed her role in a chaotic environment and “knew who needed the comfort of a dog, which firefighter needed to hold her close and stroke her fur.”

Bretagne continued working with Corliss for seven years, participating

in search and rescue missions following Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ivan.

After retiring aged nine, she continued working as a goodwill ambassador for her local fire department and as a reading assistance dog for children.

Bretagne and Corless went to Ground Zero in 2014 for the first time since 2001. She returned again last year when a special birthday party was held in the city to honor the rescue dog.

Corliss told Today that in recent weeks Bretagne had suffered kidney failure and was having difficulty moving. After three consecutive days of refusing food, Corliss said she knew the dog’s time had come to an end. Bretagne was brought to the vet for her final journey accompanied by the hero’s salute.

Tapick’s interest in Music and the Arts goes back to her childhood, due to her Mother’s Father introducing her and her sister to music at an early age. Nancy today attributes her passion and love of Music and the Arts to him, who always encouraged she and her sister to learn all the new songs.

As Nancy explains it

“Sundays were reserved for “Our Show,” and my sister and I would learn all the new songs from the Dick Clark American Bandstand songbook. We would sing and dance our hearts out, having been enrolled in all kinds of lessons, including piano, ballet, tap, and jazz. Many people say that I am the only person they know that answers questions with a line from a song and I sing it . . .while others think I know every lyric to every song. I don’t think I do, but maybe they are right!”

In 2002, through her cousin Frankie Randall, Nancy met Marilyn & Mastro Ben Benachowski, Co-Founders of The Desert Symphony. She and her husband, Israel Tapick, became fast friends and supporters of The Desert Symphony. Nancy was asked to join the Board of the Desert Symphony . . . and the rest is history.

“I love what I am doing. I am grateful to have the opportunity to give back to this community. I love McCallum Theatre, and all the wonderful friends I have made through the years of dedication to the Arts,” Tapick continued.

By Pamela Price The High Desert is

changing tourism this year, partially due to the National Park Service celebrating 100 years. David Parker, on turning forty years old found this moment to be, as he says, “a harmonic convergence.” When the opportunity arose to create a private guest ranch with a spa twist in the shadow of Joshua Tree National Park’s surrealistic boulders, it took Mr. Parker just 90 days

to transform this three-acre frontier style ranch into a retreat surrounded by stunning sunsets and spectacular sunrises, wrapped in sweeping swaths of stars. Yet, Star Ranch wasn’t originally meant to be a tourist destination he admitted. This happened by accident as he spent an intensive three months designing a personal retreat, from an outdoor shower, featuring desert inspired skin care products he created for

his business, The Body Deli, in Palm Desert (also homes to a factory where hand crafted skin care products are made with several ingredients sourced from dates and citrus cultivated in the Coachella Valley.) On the other hand, Star Ranch, located off Highway 62, has everything going for it except pavement. Parker says, “when I looked up at the super-charged sunset meeting the Joshua Tree boulders the landscape resembled a distant planet. I

knew this was where I wanted to be, whether the access was paved or unpaved.”

It was no surprise that it took him so little time to transform his residential ranch into a personal retreat. It was at that point he decided to share it, as a personal retreat, for weddings, special events and guests who want to simply relax, have a few spa treatments, try the pickle ball court or even have a private session with a local astronomer. Today, The concierge can arrange a lesson with falcon expert or an experienced guide to give you the lowdown on nearby hikes. “In other words Star Ranch is a customized vacation, without the crowds. We can curate your stay here to explore this slice of the Mojave’s High Desert. Star Ranch brings the high desert to your doorstep, literally. If you want to explore there we can point you in the direction of La Copine in Flamingo Heights off Old Woman Springs Road where we checked out desert delicacies such as the “rhubarbra Streisand a dessert with fresh berries in all the right places.” It’s a popular café located off Old Woman Springs Road in nearby Flamingo Heights.

Then there is Johns Restaurant on Hwy 62 advertising a $6.99 special worth every penny, a hefty hamburger surrounded by a generous serving of a

house made fried zucchini and onion rings. Mark Farley, an experienced tour guide, checked it all out and deemed this slice of the high desert ‘ a last frontier for desert tourism’. “ The desert blossoms in spring with Joshua Trees framing Highway 62 revealing a treasure trove of home owned businesses such as a blast to the past beauty shop known as The Beauty Bubble and the Cactus Mart, a veritable oasis of desert cacti and flowering plants.” Then there are the countless art galleries that line both sides of Highway 62 where many local artists come together producing the Hwy 62 Open Studio Art tours in October. This year marks the 16th year; last year, 140 artists opened their studios from the Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, and Joshua Tree. Meanwhile back at the ranch picture yourself inhaling fragrant massage oils such as Lavender, Chamomile Tahitian Vanilla, Eucalyptus Rosemary and Moroccan Mint displayed feng shui style in a stylish claw foot bathtub. “You never have to leave Star Ranch as everything is brought to you. Once the electric gate quietly closes behind you, it’s all part of a stellar luxe frontier style experience. www.StarRanchJoshuaTree.com

By Dan SewellCINCINNATI - A prosecutor

Monday announced no charges will be brought against the mother of the little boy who got into the gorilla exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo, saying the 3-year-old “just scampered off” as children sometimes do.

The shooting of a 400-pound gorilla that was dragging the child through a moat May 28 set off a torrent of criticism online, with some attacking the zoo for the animal’s death and others blaming the mother for not watching her child more closely.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said the case didn’t come close to warranting a charge of child endangerment, and he defended the mother as an attentive parent undeserving of the sharp criticism and threats.

He said the mother had three other children with her at the zoo and had turned away “for a few seconds” to attend to one when the boy took off.

“If anyone doesn’t believe a 3-year-old can scamper off very quickly, they’ve never had kids. Because they can. And they do,” Deters said.

In a statement, the family said it was pleased with the decision.

“This is one more step in allowing us to put this tragic episode behind us and return to our normal family,” the statement said.

The boy apparently climbed over a 3-foot barrier, made his way through bushes and fell 15 feet into a shallow moat. The zoo’s dangerous-animal response team shot the agitated, 17-year-old gorilla, Harambe, after concluding the boy’s life was in danger.

The zoo plans to reopen its Gorilla World on Tuesday with a higher, reinforced barrier. Deters said he was glad to see the improvements.

The zoo’s actions will be reviewed separately by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. An animal protection group has urged that the zoo be fined.

The zoo had no immediate comment on the prosecutor’s announcement.

Legal experts had said all along that child-endangerment charges were unlikely under such circumstances. Echoing those experts, Deters said there was no evidence the mother heedlessly put her child in danger, as prosecutors who have had to show.

“If she had been in the bathroom smoking crack, that would be a different story.

But that’s not what happened here,” the prosecutor said.

The prosecutor said the mother was there with her four children, ranging in age from 1 to 7, and was also with a friend with her own two sons.

Deters said he has been “a bit taken aback” by the reaction to the gorilla’s death. He said the zoo suffered a great loss, “but it is still animal. It does not equate with human life. And they felt that this boy’s life was in jeopardy and they made the painful choice to do what they did.”

Cincinnati police said some of the online posts contained threatening language such as “shoot the mother.” Family spokeswoman Gail Myers said they “are taking appropriate precautions.”

The zoo has said that there had been no previous breaches in Gorilla World’s 38-year history and that the barrier had passed repeated inspections by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which accredits zoos.

Zoo spokeswoman Michelle Curley said the barrier will now be 42 inches high - a half-foot taller than before - with solid wood beams on top and at the bottom, plus knotted rope netting at the bottom.

A Cincinnati police report identified the boy’s mother as Michelle Gregg, 32, who works at a preschool near Cincinnati. The child’s father isn’t named in the report, and it was not clear whether he was at the zoo that day.

The boy’s family has said

he is doing well. He was treated at a hospital and released the evening of the incident. Police said he had scrapes on his head and knee, but was alert and talking when rescued, despite the fall into the moat. Source KMIR/AP

No charges against boy’s mother in gorilla case

Old Globe stages a delicious comedy about the art of sushi

By Jack Lyons Theatre and Film Critic

Japan as an Island country had been insulated, by choice, from outside influences for centuries. Its culture and customs were relatively unknown to Westerners until the 16th Century.

The Japanese people have always taken pride in their more measured lifestyle with its appreciation for patience, regimentation, introspection, and discipline along with a respect for periods of silence and reflection both at work and at home.

When it became time for East to meet West in the modern era, food as usual, was the vehicle that crossed the cultural bridge bringing people closer

together. Which brings us to the just opened Old Globe production of “tokyo fish story”, insightfully written by Kimber Lee, and creatively staged by May Adrales.

The story is set in present day Tokyo and centers around Master Sushi Chef Koji who carefully and methodically built his successful career on respect for tradition, fine ingredients, and the legends of master sushi chefs who came before him. But now his once famous restaurant is losing its customers to newer and glitzier sushi eateries. Here as everywhere, it’s time for the new and younger generation of restauranteurs to take over. But tradition in Japan dies hard.

Koji (stoically but solidly played by James Saito) is having a crisis of aging in a

modern society that seems indifferent to his personal business philosophy and work ethic. He misses the respect and the attention to detail required that present day sushi chefs cavalierly fail to bring to their profession. The pursuit of money not deserved at the expense of his customers is not a factor that consumes Koji’s days and nights. Now if only his small staff could embrace that philosophy.

Takashi, his assistant sushi chef (wonderfully played by Tim Chiou) has been a sushi-chef-in-training, mentored by Koji for years. However, he has not been allowed to create his own sushi delicacies. Koji feels the time isn’t quite right (even after 20 years of loyal service).

Takashi, however, knows he is ready to step up but doesn’t quite know how to broach the delicate subject with his mentor/boss. It’s a familiar problem in small or family owned businesses worldwide.

Pecking order for employee in restaurants everywhere are rigid and fixed; in Japan even more so. Just as Takashi must wait, so must Nobu, a hip-hop-talking assistant, winningly played by Raymond Lee. According to the director’s program notes Ms. Adrales’ vision for the comedy/drama has staged the

action of the play into areas: The restaurant where the chefs prepare and serve food and the fish market where owners and chefs come every morning to inspect and test the fish for quality, freshness and taste before purchasing what will become that evening’s sushi entrees.

Tina Chilip, portrays two roles: Ama Miyuki, an experienced sushi kitchen staff employee, and a mysterious female sea siren seen only by Koji. As a female, she is subject to deferring to less skilled male employees when opportunities for promotions come along. Jon Norman Schneider plays six roles performing yeoman duty in all six. As the clutzy busboy/dishwasher comic relief on Koji’s staff, Schneider’s character is like a fish out of water. Woe betide the restaurant that hires this eager but clumsy busboy/dishwasher.

The beauty and enjoyment of this richly and inventively staged production lies in the supremacy of style over the prosaic substance of narrative. Ms. Adrales’ decision to have 99 percent of the action in the restaurant, when it comes to food preparation and clean-up duties, mimed by the actors in sync with a technically-pure sound design by Charles Coes and Nathan A. Roberts is touch

of genius. The audience becomes, not only fully engaged in the story but also is fascinated and mesmerized by what takes place in a sushi kitchen, further enriching the visual experience (at least for this audience member).

There is nothing better than watching talented actors working with an experienced director who brings his or her personal vision to the production, and then allows the talent of the actors to take flight. “tokyo fish story” is a ‘small’ story beautifully realized with tender loving care.

The technical and creative team led by director Adrales features an eye-catching glistening kitchen set design by Mikiko Suzuki MacAdams, along with spot-on, authentic, costumes designed by David Israel Reynoso that shine under a lighting design by Jiyoun Chang. The terrific sound design team of Charles Coes and Nathan A. Roberts, was highlighted above earlier. “tokyo fish story” is a splendid production that performs, without an intermission, on the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre Stage and runs through June 26, 2016.

Artistic Director Barry Edelstein’s program notes stating he guarantees that after you see the ninety-minute show you’re going to want eat sushi; is prophetic.

Wonderful recordings spanning that collectively span the early 1960s to 2015 are included in a roundup of highly-recommended new commercial recordings available now.

Artist: Paul McCartneyTitle: Pure McCartney (Concord Music Group)You might like if you enjoy: Paul McCartney, The Beatles,

Tell me more: If Paul McCartney’s career had ended with the demise of the Beatles in 1970, the Liverpool, England native would still be considered among the greatest musical artists of the last 100 years. But the fact that McCartney has composed an incredible body of songs as a solo artist is also clear, thanks to the wonderful collection “Pure McCartney” that strengthens the case that even apart from the Fab Four Sir Paul remains a master singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer. The remastered and carefully positioned songs on “Pure McCartney” include everything from early standouts (“Maybe I’m Amazed,” “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey”) to Wings hits (“Live and Let Die,” “Jet,” “Band on the Run”) to more recent gems (“Only Mama Knows,” “Jenny Wren,” “Hope for the Future”). “Pure McCartney”

is available via three different formats, including as a 2-disc CD set that includes 39 songs, a 4-disc CD set including 67 songs and a 4-disc vinyl set featuring 41 songs. Information: PaulMcCartney.com.

Artist: The Zombies Title: The BBC Radio Sessions (Varèse Sarabande Records)You might like if you enjoy: The Zombies, the Beatles

Tell me more: Even fans with a casual interest in 1960s music should get the Zombies’ “The BBC Radio Sessions,” a 2-disc CD set that collects the groundbreaking British band’s entire known BBC Radio broadcast recordings (many have sadly been lost), including five previously-unreleased tracks not included in a limited edition vinyl-only 2015 release. The set includes the Beeb’s earliest recordings of the Zombies (a Sept. 29, 1964 session that thrills with versions of the blues gem “Road Runner,” and their own “You Make Me Feel Good” and “She’s Not There”). Among the other stunning musical performances is a 1965 take of the Chris White-penned original “What More Can I Do,” a sweeping version of Gene Vincent’s “I’m Going Home” and several versions of their

timeless hit “Tell Her No.” Those interested in checking out the legendary Zombies in concert, can catch them here in Southern California when they perform in Pasadena on Sept. 2, at the legendary Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Sept. 3, and at the Belly Up in Solana Beach on Sept. 8. Information: VareseSarabande.com.

Artist: Mitch Ryder & Detroit Wheels Title: All-Time Greatest Hits (Varèse Sarabande Records)You might like if you enjoy: Bruce Springsteen, Vintage Trouble, Bob Seger

Tell me more: Raw. Explosive. Infectious. The recordings featured on Mitch Ryder & Detroit Wheels’ “All-Time Greatest Hits” truly capture the excitement of the ensemble’s 1960s recordings in all their unbridled glory. Blending British Invasion rock, soulful Motown and blues styles like no other artist of the era, the Detroit-based group (featuring singer William Levise Jr., rhythm guitarist Joey Kubert, bassist Earl Elliott, drummer Johnny Badanjek and lead guitarist Jim McCarty was only together from 1964 to 1967 (after which Levise/Ryder embarked on a solo career) but left an indelible

legacy and lasting influence on popular music. Listening to stirring “Jenny Take a Ride!” and the rousing “Devil With a Blue Dress On & Good Golly Miss Molly” medley is to be swept up in the power of rock music’s spectacular youth. Information: VareseSarabande.com.

Artist: Imagine DragonsTitle: Smoke + Mirrors Live (Eagle Vision/Interscope Records)You might like if you enjoy: Two Door Cinema Club, Imagine Dragons

Tell me more: Imagine Dragons’ appeal is undeniable. The Las Vegas-spawned group’s newly-released “Smoke + Mirrors Live” caught the Grammy Award winners performing at a sold-out show in Toronto in July 2015, with the the infectious “Shots,” an introspective acapella version of Alphaville’s “Forever Young” (that segues into the band’s own “Smoke and Mirrors”) and guitar-anchored blues rocker “I’m So Sorry” among the songs featured on the winning release. “Smoke + Mirrors Live” is available on DVD + CD, Blu-ray + CD and as a digital video download. This writer is reviewing the DVD + CD version which features 117 minutes of audio-video

content on the DVD disc and 13 tracks on the audio CD. The bonus features on the DVD include multi-angle options for several of the songs including “Roots” and “I Was Me” and alternate versions of “Hopeless Opus” and “Gold.” Information: ImagineDragonsMusic.com and eagle-rock.com.

Artist: The HappeningsTitle: The Very Best of The Happenings (Varèse Sarabande Records)You might like if you enjoy: The Beach Boys, the Association

Tell me more: Paterson, New Jersey’s the Happenings enjoyed a string of tuneful pop hits in the mid-1960s. Now the Happenings’ best recordings have been gathered on a disc featuring memorable and breezy material such as the quartet’s “See You in September,” “Go Away Little Girl” and a wonderful reworking of the timeless George Gershwin/Ira Gershwin song “I Got Rhythm.” The range of material is rich, with the group’s final hit (“Hare Krishna” from the rock musical “Hair”) also included here. The property offered for sale excludes all funds held on account by the property receiver, if applicable. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. Ali won many great victories in the ring. But his most important fight – against Parkinson’s disease – led to the creation of the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.

“Muhammad felt he had a mission,” said Dr. Abraham Lieberman, Ali’s personal physician and Chair of Movement Disorders Research at Barrow. “Muhammad rose from a young boy in Louisville to the heavyweight champion of the world. This Center was part of it. This was his mission.”

After Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the 1980s, Dr. Lieberman said, he resisted numerous attempts to lend his name to campaigns to battle the disease. But that changed after Ali met Dr. Lieberman, who wrote a poem that persuaded the Champ to join with Lieberman and Phoenix philanthropist Jimmy Walker to establish the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center in 1997.

“Muhammad stood up to this disease for 34 years,” said Dr. Lieberman, who last saw Ali on the day he died. “The last few years were really tough.”

Dr. Holly Shill, MD, director of the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, said there was no medical evidence that boxing had contributed to Ali’s Parkinson’s disease, as many have speculated.

“If you take people who don’t have a history of head injury, the risk of developing Parkinson’s is about one percent at age 60,” Dr. Shill said. “If you look at people who do have a history of head injury – pretty significant head injury,

enough to either go to the hospital or get medical attention as a result – that number goes up to about one and a half percent. So it increases your risk some, but it’s not like everybody who has a head injury gets Parkinson’s disease.

“Is there a dose relationship, if you get enough head injuries, does that increase your risk?” Dr. Shill said. “It’s not clear whether that happens with Parkinson’s disease.”

Asked about whether there will be a cure for Parkinson’s, Dr. Shill said she prefers to focus on treating it as a “chronic condition that can be managed. If we can slow the disease we can keep it in a very manageable state. If you talk to patients, a lot of them would be okay with that.”

The press conference on Monday was held in an exercise room at the Center used every day by hundreds

of patients stricken with the same disease as Ali, who died Friday at 74. They receive the same care that “The Greatest” did. The Center is located on the Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center campus, which houses Barrow Neurological Institute.

“The care has been afforded not just to the Greatest, but the least,” said Brian Mortenson, president and CEO of St. Joseph’s Foundation and Barrow Neurological Foundation. “That was part of the vision of the Alis.”

Also speaking at the press conference was Robert Spetzler, MD, director of Barrow Neurological Institute. Several patients also shared their experiences at the Center.

“One of the beautiful things about Ali was that it made no difference what status in life you had,” Dr. Spetzler said. “He may no longer be physically

with us, but his indomitable spirit of confronting bigotry and fighting the ravages of the disease will prevail.”

In the last year, the Center had approximately 10,000 patient visits and 1,000 new patients. The facility in Central Phoenix is typically busy, but a buzz would occur when its namesake came in for an appointment.

“He took terrific pride in the Center,” Dr. Lieberman said. “His eyes would light up when he came here.”

A public tribute area to Ali has been placed at St. Joseph’s Hospital on the northwest corner of Fifth Avenue and Thomas Road. Individuals may leave flowers and best wishes there.

On May 28, 2016 Dr. David B. Kaminsky, Executive Vice President of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP), received the 2016 Maurice Goldblatt Award from the International Academy of Cytology at the opening ceremonies of the 19th International Congress of Cytology in Yokohama, Japan.

The Award recognizes his “lifelong love of and dedication to clinical cytology; his efforts in establishing fine needle aspiration cytology in clinical practice; his special relationship to underserved areas of the world, and his achievements in bringing knowledge and expertise to these areas; his loyal support of Acta Cytologica and the International Academy of Cytology for many years.”

“In underserved countries like Haiti and Nigeria, for instance, pathologists are

often the only doctors with the tools and knowledge to diagnose patients for a large area, even the entire country in some cases,” said Dr. Kaminsky. “For these pathologists, it is critical that they have the most up-to-date educational resources so they can improve their diagnostic skills, optimize patient care, and save lives.”

One of Dr. Kaminsky’s personal goals is strengthening the field of pathology as a world leader in contemporary medicine. During his tenure at Eisenhower Medical Center where he served as Chairman of the Department of Pathology for 28 years, he conceived and launched Africa Calls, a distance-learning endeavor that brings continuing medical education to 22 sites in Africa.

As the Executive Vice President of USCAP, Dr. Kaminsky spearheaded the

USCAP Interactive Learning Center, a state-of-the-art facility that represents the most advanced, interactive learning environment designed to refine skills, reduce diagnostic errors and transform how medical professionals train and practice. At the Center, pathologists work side-by-side with experts from institutions such as Johns Hopkins Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Harvard Medical School and many other world-class facilities.

The Center is the only facility of its kind that features two interactive microscopy laboratories, facilities for teaching ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy, and an on-site television broadcast studio and conference theater capable of global transmission of live and recorded courses taught at the Center, giving

pathologists unprecedented worldwide access to the most current educational resources. The emphasis is on creation of curated, validated, digital educational assets delivered on demand through mobile devices, and on the simulation of the unique mentoring experience that occurs at the microscope during clinical sign-out.

Dr. Kaminsky is highly acclaimed for his expertise in the field of pathology, having lectured throughout the world on fine needle aspiration biopsy as a cost- conservative, minimally invasive diagnostic technique. He received the President’s Award (2001) and the Papanicolaou Award (2002) from the American Society of Cytopathology, and the Yolanda Oertel Interventional Cytopathologist of the Year Award of the Papanicolaou Society in 2015.

Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler may

be a 19th century gal but she could easily fit into the machinations of any 21st century society with a tweak here and a left turn there. Then as now, Hedda Gabler wannabes show up with regularity. Take any Bette Davis or Joan Crawford movie or Lillian Hellman’s ‘The Little Foxes’ Regina character - all alpha females - all with their agendas.

The difference between the plight of 19th century European women then is, they didn’t have the law on their side, then but they do now. Patriarchal society rules have always been rigged in favor of men who like it that way. No changes are required or need fixing, thank you. The fair sex doesn’t see it that way, never has and never will. They look upon it as payback for all those centuries in indentured service to men, and rightly so.

Ibsen, considered by many to be the father of modern dramatic realism was a man who wrote plays often deemed scandalous by his peers and society in general. But he created wonderful roles for women (much like Tennessee Williams) such as Nora, in “A Doll’s House” and Hedda Gabler. Next to Shakespeare, Ibsen is the most produced playwright in the world.

David Ellenstein, the

artistic director of North Coast Repertory Theatre (NCRT), has a keen eye and ear for the classics and for plays that explore the human condition. “Hedda Gabler was on his radar screen for selection in their 34th season, after an acclaimed production of the Ibsen play “Ghosts” - with a new translation by Professor Hanes Harvey, back in 2010 received strong audience praise.

Ellenstein, then sought out, once again the translation gifts of dramaturg and playwright Professor Anne-Charlotte Hanes Harvey, a recognized Ibsen and Strindberg scholar and translator, with a request to produce a new translation, this time, of Hedda Gabler for North Coast Repertory theatre. The new translation can now lay claim that this production is a bona fide world premiere event. Another unique aspect of the production is that the actors had inputs into the script as to character traits, motivations, and dialogue suggestions making the production a true collaboration by all of the creative artists involved in the production.

The cast assemble by director Ellenstein is a who’s who of award-winning San Diego- based and award-winning regional actors that include NCRT favorites: Bruce Turk as Jorgen Tesman, Hedda’s husband, Mhari Sandoval, as the scheming, headstrong Hedda, The elegant Cristina Soria as Aunt Juliane Tesman, Richard Baird as former hell-raiser Eilert

Lovborn, a writer and former lover of Hedda who now claims he has been re-born, Ray Chambers as Judge Brack, a roue, blackmailer, seducer of women, New York based-actor Mel House makes her NCRT debut as Mrs. Thea Elvsted, the lover of Eilert Lovborg, and Rhona Gold as Berte the maid.

Long before TV soaps made their debut in America, Henrik Ibsen was scandalizing the patrons of Europe’s theatrical stages with similar themed plays. There’ is no doubt about it. We human beings are a complicated,

conflicted, and a fascinating lot.Ellenstein’s smooth and

seamless direction keeps everything moving with first rate technical credits from master set designer Marty Burnett and his lighting designer and creative side-kick Matthew Novotny. They never disappoint. The costumes of Elisa Benzoni are gorgeous and the sound design by Melanie Chen is pitch-perfect.

With regard to Hedda’s black outfit in Act II. Perhaps, a trim of Hedda’s train might be in order. She looks as if she’s struggling to avoid falling

when she moves. When this occurs the audiences’ focuses then shifts from the action within the scene to where we are concerned for the actor’s safety. Thus we are visually and mentally distracted by something that can easily be fixed before it occurs. We want the audience to be fully engaged during the entire play. Just a suggestion…

“Hedda Gabler” is a splendid production with a stellar cast that performs at North Coast Repertory Theatre through June 26, 2016. Don’t miss it!
