• Managers tend to distrust their subordinates, as they believe that
employees dislike work and will avoid it if they can.
• Employees prefer to be directed and need to be controlled. Employees are lazy people
and dislike responsibilities. • Theory X management would be inclined to
adopt an autocratic leadership style.
Theory Y
• Management trusts employees and believes that they should be given the opportunity to be
involved in decision-making and also take greater responsibilities.
• Employees want to work hard and be creative. • Management has high expectations of their employees, as they trust them and empower
them to make some decisions. • Theory Y managers will be inclined to adopt a
democratic style of management.
