We haven't been able to identify his parents. He married Elizabeth ( Smothers ?) ; 42 at least eight children, all born Orange Co NC. From about 1753 he owned a farm of about 250 acres on the south/west side of the Haw River where Terrell's Creek joins it, in Orange Co (Chatham Co after 1771). 2 His will was dated 16 Jul 1790. He died before November 1790 in Chatham Co NC, 3 age possibly about 60. In 1997 we visited Pittsboro, Chatham Co NC and the surrounding area, trying to find some records about the Pickard and Petty families. (We were also looking for the members of our Cole family, Section 6b, who were in Chatham, Orange and Alamance counties in the mid-eighteenth century.) We liked the countryside, enjoyed our trip, and learned some history new to us, including the War of the Regulators, said by some to be the beginning of the Revolution. Unfortunately, we found very little information pertinent to our families, but hope to pursue this line more in the future. PICKARD ORIGINS -- It seems probable that our Pickard brothers must have moved into North Carolina from Virginia, Maryland or Pennsylvania, because those states were the source of most immigrants to central NC at that time. One researcher suggests 4 that they may have descended from John Pickard of Rowley, Massachusetts. A Puritan, he was an early magistrate and had come from Essex Co, England, in 1632. It is thought that some of his descendants moved south to New Jersey and/or Pennsylvania. So far, however, we haven't found a connection. With regard to earlier Pickards, we have no definitive information. It has been said that knights from Picardy, France, went into England with William the Conqueror in 1066. (John Pickard of Rowley is said to have been a descendent of one of these Normans.) A family name in those days often referred to a person's birthplace or home, so a William de Picard could mean William of Picardy. In records as early as the twelfth century there are said to be references to Picard, Piccard, Picchard, Pichard and Pickard, all variants of the same name. We have also wondered if our family could be of Scottish origin, with the name Pickard deriving from Pict, but this is also unconfirmed. A recent correspondant 45 indicates a lineage of 14 generations before our earliest Henry, with persons of various titles in Picardy, France. It is certainly possible, but we are not including any of that material here. A. (John?) Henry 2 Pickard, born before 1750, went to Georgia. I. Henry 1 Pickard 's birthdate is not known to us; for our convenience we estimate it as about 1730. We haven't been able to identify his parents.

WILLIAM PICKARD (b c1758) and ELIZABETH JUSTICE (b 1751) and their descendantsfrom page 3b-1

William's parents were Henry Pickard and Elizabeth [Pickard]Elizabeth's parents were John Justice and Elizabeth Edwards

B. William 2 Pickard was born about 1758 Orange Co NC11 (Chatham Co after 1771). He married Elizabeth Justice ; at least three children, born in Chatham Co. We don't know when they married, or when or where they died. She was born 17 Oct 1751 Surry Co VA. Her parents were John Justice and Elizabeth Edwards of Chatham Co NC, below.

Although we have no definite proof, we believe William is the father of our Henry Pickard, primarily because of location, proximity on the count sheets, and appropriate age differences in the 1815 Tax List of Chatham Co and the 1820 US Census of Chatham Co.

1. Peter Stephanos3 Pickard, born about 1781, married Elizabeth "Betty" Sanders -- see page 3b-3.

2. Henry 3 Pickard , born about 1788, married Nancy Petty -- see page 3b-4.

3. William3 Pickard was born about 1789. He died 1 Jul 1852,5 age about 63.

-- Some information about the JUSTICE family52 --

Recently we've found the following information about possible ancestors of Elizabeth Justice, who married William Pickard. Please note that, although we have not confirmed all of this, we include it here because it seems reasonable. We hope a future researcher may use it as a starting point for further confirmation and/or correction.

I. William Justice was born about 1625 in Wales, and probably emigrated to Jamestown VA about 1650. He had 1198 acres, called Kittawon Plantation, in Charles City Co VA near Flowerdew Hundred Creek. He owned the ship Edward and was a member of the House of Burgesses. He transported numerous persons, and information is available about his activities. He married Mary Frame 26 May 1656. Her parents were John Fraeme and Anne Clay , below. Born about 1635 Charles City Co, Mary died about 1673 Charles City Co, age about 38. William is said to have died 1729 Accomack Co VA (at age 104?), but we think more likely 1664 Charles City Co, age about 39.55

A. Justinian Justice I , born about 1656, married Mary Cannon ; probably at least two sons. He died about 1720, age about 64.

1. Justinian Justice II , born about 1694, married Priscilla Brown ; probably six children. Born about 1694, she died about 1749, age about 55. He died about 1775, age about 81.

a. John Justice , born about 1719/20, married Elizabeth Edwards 27 Nov 1750 Charles City Co; eleven children. They are said to be "of Chatham Co NC" but we don't know when they lived there. Born about 1719/20, she died after 1776, age at least 56. He died about 1794, age about 74.

i. Elizabeth Justice , born 17 Oct 1751 Surry Co VA, married William Pickard , above.

THE FRAME/FRAEME FAMILY -- John Fraeme was born about 1608 Gloucester, England. In 1622 he emigrated to VA on the Southampton, indentured to Capt John Harvey. John Fraeme lived at "Jordan's Journey" 1622-1625 and, at age 16, was in the Muster of Jordan's Journey Jan/Feb 1625; he later became a militia captain. He married Anne Clay about 1630. He died about 1655 Charles City Co, age about 47.

Anne was born about 1610 in England, but we don't know her parents or when they emigrated. She is said to have died about 1650 Charles City Co VA, age about 40, but she is also said to have had a second husband, Thomas Chappell, and possibly a third husband also.

See Section 4a for a possible early connection between the Fraeme, Clay, and Wall families. 06/05, 12/05, 06/06

PETER STEPHANOS PICKARD (b c1781) and ELIZABETH SANDERS (b 1776)and their descendants

from page 3b-2Peter's parents were William Pickard and Elizabeth Justice

Elizabeth's parents were Jesse Sanders and Ann Yancy

1. Peter Stephanos3 Pickard,12 born about 1781, married Elizabeth "Betty" Sanders about 1800;13 at least nine children. Born 16 Apr 1776 in NC, Betty died about 1830, age about 54. Peter died about 1844 Blue Water, Hickman Co TN,5 age about 63.

One source6 says that Peter was a native of France and came to America with Lafayette. The implication is that Peter was an adult at the time, but this can't be literally true because of his birthdate. It is certainly possible that his father came with Lafayette but, if so, then Peter is not a son of William Pickard. We have, however, found no evidence other than this one source.

THE SANDERS/SAUNDERS FAMILY -- Betty's father was Jesse Sanders, DAR Patriot, who was born 21 Jul 1743 in VA, and died about 1809 Putnam Co GA. His parents were probably William Saunders and Elizabeth Hubbard. Information is available on the Sanders/Saunders family.

Jesse married Ann Yancy/Yancey 19 Oct 1765 Granville Co NC. She was born about 1748 Hanover Co VA.9 Her father was James Yancy/Yancey. Information is available on the Yancy/Yancey family.

a) William Green4 Pickard,15 usually known as Green, was born 9 Aug 1805 Chathaqua, Chatham Co NC. He married Mary "Polly" Chambliss 28 Feb 1825 Chatham Co; at least 13 children including Peter, below. Her father was Jesse Chambliss.

In 1825 William and Polly moved to Hickman Co TN, where he was a farmer. At the time of his death, in Huntsville, Madison Co AL, he was in the meat business. He died 30 Sep 1854, age 49, and she died about 1876, age about 67.

i) Peter P5 Pickard6 was born 1 Oct 1845. He was in Frank Maney's Battery of Artillery in the Confederate Army, and lost an arm at Rocky Face Ridge in 1864. He married Julia Britt 1867 Perry Co TN; six children. Her father was William O Britt.

Peter was Comptroller of Tennessee 1883-1889, and superintendent of the 1900 Sixth District census. In 1901 he established the first bank in Ashland City, Cheatham Co TN. Information is available on his other activities and achievements. He died 2 Jan 1929 Cheatham Co, age 83.

HENRY PICKARD (b c1788) and NANCY PETTY (b c1794) and their descendantsfrom page 3b-2

Henry's parents were William Pickard and Elizabeth JusticeNancy's parents were John Petty and Martha Sanders

2. Henry 3 Pickard was born about 1788 Chatham Co NC.19 He may have first married (--?--) [Pickard]; probably two children. He married Nancy Petty about 1817 in NC,21 probably Chatham Co; probably seven children. All the children were born Chatham Co. Nancy's parents were John Petty and Martha Sanders , daughter of William Sanders and Agatha [Sanders].

Henry and Nancy moved to Smith Co TN about 1831, and to Highland, Greene Co IN by 1841. Born about 1794 in NC, Nancy died Highland, date not known to us.

Henry married "Mickey" Hodges 19 Dec 1844 Greene Co;45 no children known to us. She was born about 1798 in NC. He died about 1860 Highland, Greene Co, age about 72.

We know very little, unfortunately, about Henry and Nancy. Only recently we found out that they went to Indiana rather than remaining in North Carolina or Tennessee.

With regard to reasons why they left NC and TN, we know that many Quaker families in the area did so in the 1830s. This may have been because of religious disagreement with slavery, a desire to be elsewhere before war came, urging of friends and relatives, etc. We believe Henry's great-uncle John, page 3b-18, became a Quaker, and we think it likely that Henry and Nancy may also have been members.

Recently we received information from Barbara Pickard,45 which includes two children of Henry and Nancy we had not known about, and three others we had thought probable. Although we have not picked up her data about previous generations, we have added some of her information about the children of Henry and Nancy. Incidentally, Barbara believes Henry and Nancy were married about 1811.

THOMAS PICKARD (b 1812) and LUCRETIA JOHNSON [JORDAN] (b 1814)and their descendants

from page 3b-4Thomas' parents were Henry Pickard and Nancy Petty

Lucretia's parents were Cherokee Johnson and Hester Light

b) Thomas4 Pickard, born 1 Mar 1812 Chatham Co NC. He moved to a very wild area in Greene Co IN, probably about 1832 or 1833, and purchased 300 acres of land. He married Lucretia Johnson [Jordan] 28 Feb 1834, probably Owen Co IN; at least thirteen children born Highland, Greene Co IN over a period of 26 years. She was born 11 Dec 1814 in IN.19 Her parents were Cherokee Johnson and Hester Light.

Thomas died 22 Mar 1892 Owen Co IN, age 80, and was buried Pickard Cemetery, Calvertville, Greene Co IN.

We are curious about the first name of Lucretia's father. We know that the infamous "Trail of Tears" began about 1832, and wonder whether Mr Johnson was a Cherokee himself or whether his name came about otherwise.

JESSE PICKARD (b 1818) and ELIZABETH MELINDA CROWELL (b 1831)and their descendants

from page 3b-4Jesse's parents were Henry Pickard and Nancy Petty

Melinda's parents were Charles Crowell and Elizabeth [Crowell]

b) Jesse 4 Pickard was born 27 Nov (or 27 Apr) 1818 in NC.26 He married Elizabeth Melinda "Lindy" Crowell about 1848; eight children born Smith Co TN. She was born 17 Oct 1831 (or 1830) in NC.45 Her parents were Charles Crowell and Elizabeth [Crowell].

Lindy died 26 Dec 1906, age 75. Jesse died 18 Nov (or 8 Nov) 1894 Smith Co TN, age 75. They were buried Dr Gross’ Cemetery, Possom Valley, Smith Co.27,59

We assume Jesse and Lindy were married in Tennessee. We believe he stayed behind when his parents went to Indiana. It's possible, however, that he had gone with them and then returned to Tennessee to settle permanently. With travel so difficult in those days, however, we think Jesse may simply have decided not to continue on at all. He would have been grown when his parents and all his siblings moved, and in Tennessee there were relatives and former neighbors to stay with and/or to work for. He didn't marry until he was 30.

Jesse and Lindy probably didn’t own the land they farmed. The 1850 census indicates that it was owned by his uncle, William Petty. In the 1860 census, the land was owned by William’s son, Stephen Petty. We may be mistaken, however, as we haven’t researched land records. See Section 3a for more about the Petty family.

Very little about Jesse’s adult life before about 1848 is known to us. All we are sure of is that he and Lindy were in Smith Co, Tennessee, in the summer of 1849 when their first child was born. We can't help wondering how different their life might have been if they had gone to Indiana with his parents and siblings; surely it would have been better. They were so poor and isolated, and had so little opportunity, in Smith Co.

-- See page 11 for some information about the CROWELL family --

THE HOMEPLACE IN 1942 -- Jesse and Lindy lived about as far out in the country as it's possible to get. BFE recalls JWF talking often about what a beautiful spot it was, and how she loved "going to Grandma's house" more than anything. She always heard of it as being in Buffalo Valley, which is a huge valley of the Caney Fork River, with its many small tributaries, and includes the town of Buffalo Valley. But it turns out the little stream near the old homesite is officially named Opossom Creek so, more specifically, the Pickards lived in Possom Valley, or Possom Hollow, within the greater Buffalo Valley. (Enormous herds of buffalo ranged there long ago.)

When she went there in 1942 with her mother and sister, they drove over a dirt road as far as we could, and then walked. When we got to the top of a hill it began to rain, and a family let us sit on the porch of their small house, and gave us some biscuits with peach preserves. This was delicious, but so sweet it made us very thirsty and they didn't offer us any water. To this day, peach preserves always make me think of that visit. After it stopped raining, we walked the rest of the way.

At that time, the house was in terrible shape, with part of the floor falling in. She doesn't remember much about it, except that it had a huge fireplace. It was one rather large room, with a leanto kitchen, and was made of logs (good hardwood ones, which she was told later had been stolen and carried away). Jesse and Lindy's son Jeff (Jefferson Davis Pickard) still lived there, but in such miserable conditions she didn't see how he could. Of course he had kept the house up much better before he became old and feeble.

THE SITE IN 1992 -- A real highlight of their visit 50 years later was her cousin John Douglas Wall taking them there. This meant a great deal to her. They drove all the way to the end of the valley on good gravel roads. The "road" she walked on in 1942 was barely visible (it's on private property and evidently hasn't been used for quite a while). In 1992 the old house was completely gone, but they feel they reached the site. John found the flat place in the rocky creek bottom where Jesse would have driven a team across to the house and barn.

Dr Gross’ Cemetery is almost at the lower end of the valley. It’s off the road, under some trees in a field overlooking the Caney Fork River. Before the cemetery was fenced, whoever used the field hadn't cared for it as a cemetery at all, and animals had wandered freely. As a result, many of the stones have been knocked out of position, broken, etc. Also, many of the graves evidently never had durable markers, just wooden or weak cement which has crumbled away, so there's no way to tell how many people are buried there, or who many of them are.

The Pickards placed tombstones on each grave until Jeff died (when no one was left to do so). We found tombstones for Jesse and Lindy and several of their sons, all in a row. But it just didn't seem right for Jeff to have no marker so, a few years ago, several cousins got together and placed a stone in memory of him, at the spot where we believe he must have been buried.

We were struck by the beauty of the site. Sort of a cul-de-sac location, surrounded by trees and rolling hills, it was the epitome of natural serenity, peace and privacy. The only drawback is that now, way down at the apparent end of the valley, you can glimpse trucks on I-40. It's probably fortunate that, from the highway, you can't really tell where the cemetery is, at least without looking awfully hard. But it's still a truly beautiful place.

Some pictures of the cemetery, referred to as the Pickard Cemetery rather than as Dr Gross’ Cemetery, are now available on the Internet.58 Located at the end of Opossum Valley Lane, off Clubb Springs Road, near Box 736, it can be found at 36-08-57N, 85-49-65W. Now sometimes called The Pickard Cemetery, it’s not a formal cemetery, just a burying ground used in the past by the neighbors around it. Owned by Dr Gross until a few years ago, the property is now maintained as a game preserve, and the land around it is farmed.

FAMILY LIFE -- It really is sad that we have so little to tell about BFE's great-grandparents. They must have been interesting people. From the facts that they emigrated from North Carolina to Tennessee, and successfully raised eight children, one can infer ambition and courage to try new things, plus determination and strength of character. However, they and most of their children were quite poor and lived in isolation. The Civil War and its aftermath were major factors, contributing to a lack of opportunity, but we sometimes wonder what else may have been involved.

We are intrigued with the fact that they didn't go on to Indiana with Henry's parents and siblings. We don't know why there would be such a complete break; there were absolutely no family stories about the Pickards who went to Indiana. In the case of the Wall family (Sections 4a and 4b), BFE's mother never mentioned anything about her cousins in Carroll Co, but we now know that at least some of her older siblings were aware of them. In the case of the Pickard family, a few of the older relatives might possibly have been able to tell me a little more but, alas, BFE didn't know the questions to ask while they were alive.

(1) Thomas Fain5 Pickard, usually known as Fain, was born 10 Jun 1849.20 He married Serena Martha Carlen 15 Aug 1880; no children. She was born 17 Apr 1852. Her parents were William Barnard Carlen and Sarah Caroline Holliday. Fain died about 1939, age about 90.

Serena's beautiful name was pronounced S'rene and, when BFE was little, she thought it was Screen, like a door. Several researchers have been interested in Fain's name because they have connections with a Fenn or Fann family in Orange and Chatham Counties of North Carolina. So far, however, we haven't found a common link.

Fain and Serena were very poor but were wonderful people. BFE has one memory of going to see them when about four or five. She recalls their house as being a long way out in the country, but John showed us the site (with a modern house on it now), within the Cookeville TN city limits, not far from his parents' house.

Cousin Donald Pickard Wall said that Serena, in spite of having so little, was a gracious lady. JWF said that Fain and Serena, despite their poverty, had a very happy life together. JWF also said that the Carlen family (active in local society) was very disappointed when Serena married Fain, that he and his family weren't good enough for them. But, JWF said, Fain was one of the best men she ever knew.

Cousin James Thomas Wall told us some little stories about Fain's ideosyncracies. Serena would make cornbread and Fain, disdaining a knife, would tear it apart "because the Lord said to break bread, not cut it." When he was full he had "et sufficient." When asking about dessert, it would be "Is there any hereafter?"

James said that Serena's brother "Old Jim" Carlen (probably James Anthony Carlen, born 24 May 1854) owned lots of property and had interests in various local enterprises such as the CocaCola bottling company, First National Bank (now First Tennessee), and the GM dealership. The Carlens' connection with CocaCola may have come through J A Carlen's grandmother, Martha Pemberton, who may be related to John Stith Pemberton, inventor of CocaCola. We note that John Stith Pemberton was a descendant of Richard Kennon and Elizabeth Worsham , BFE's sixth-great-grandparents, Section 2.

Fain and Serena took care of Serena's crippled sister Bett (probably Sarah Elizabeth Carlen, 11 Dec 1857--12 Jan 1924). James said Fain had to lift her and she was not a small woman. Despite their apparent ability to do better, for taking care of Bett the Carlen family only let Fain and Serena live in the house (James called it a hut) rent free.

One of JWF's stories was that the one thing she wanted, and had been promised by Serena, was the spinning wheel. Fannie Lou Carlen, daughter-in-law of Old Jim, rushed over and got it as soon as she heard Serena had died. 06/05, 12/05, 07/06

(2) John L5 Pickard was born 28 May 1851. He died Feb 1906, age 54,20 and was buried Dr Gross’ Cemetery.

(3) Charles Henry5 Pickard, usually known as Henry, was born 12 Nov 1853. In the 1910 census he was listed as a farmer. He died 12 Nov 1925 Smith Co TN, age 72, and was buried Dr Gross’ Cemetery. A picture of his headstone is available.58

(4) Tennessee5 Pickard, born Feb 1856,20 married John Smith -- see page 3b-17.

(5) Elijah M5 "Lige" Pickard was born 1858.20 He married Martha J Smith 3 Sep 1882 Smith Co TN; no children. She was born about 1861. He died about 1920 Springfield, Robertson Co TN, age about 62, and was buried there.

(6) Mary Jane Breckenridge 5 "Molly" Pickard , born 25 Oct 1860, married John Eldridge Wall ; seven children, including Johnnie Epperson Wall, mother of BFE.

Born 24 May 1856 DeKalb Co TN, John died 14 Jul 1925, age 69. Molly died 31 July 1934, age 73. They were buried Algood Cemetery, Algood, Putnam Co TN.27

(7) Jefferson Davis5 "Jeff" Pickard was born 21 Jan 1863.20 In the 1910 census he was listed as a mechanic (well machine). He died Sep 1950, age 87, and was buried Dr Gross’ Cemetery.27

Jeff was the last of the "three bachelor brothers" who lived together for many years in their parents' homeplace. (The others were Jesse and Henry. John was also a bachelor brother who lived with them, but he died so long before the others that he was not usually included in conversation concerning them.)

The two brothers who married (Fain and Lige) didn't have any children. It is family supposition that a measles epidemic when they were young was the reason. JWF said all these men had such fine minds they could have gone a long way if they had had opportunity. She said it was sad that none of the Pickard sons had children.

Cousin James said his favorite story about Jeff is that he (Jeff) told JWF that he sometimes got so nervous he just couldn't stand to be around anyone under 40. James said someone gave Jeff a new axe on his 89th birthday and he cut his foot chopping wood. He used to respond to "How are you?" with "tolerable" or "midlin'" (a grade of tobacco).

James recalled that Jeff left home once a year, to take his tobacco to Carthage TN to the tobacco barn auction. When he came to see James' parents in Cookeville, Jeff would get up at dawn and go out in the front yard to sit until someone else got up. Cousin Wilkes McNairy Sirls recalled Jeff coming to Nashville to the state fair once a year. He would bring just a few things in a flour sack, a pistol and some money, etc. He would only stay a day or two and then be ready to go home.

When BFE visited in 1942, she couldn't see how he could get along. She recalls that Mary Smith Ash often went to see him and did things for him, and that her uncles Wilkes Hammock Wall and Jeff Estel Wall would send or take him some coal. She supposes some of the other relatives may have helped out too.

(8) Jesse5 (S?) Pickard was born 5 Sep 1865.27 In the 1910 census he was listed as a farmer. In the 1920 census he was listed as a stationary engineer for the electric company. He died 6 Apr 1936, age 70, and was buried Dr Gross’ Cemetery.

With the marriage of Mary Jane Breckenridge Pickard and John Eldridge Wall our PICKARD lineage joins our WALL lineage – see {Section 4b} --

-- Some information about the CROWELL family --referenced on page 3b-8

In the 1850 census of Smith Co TN, Jesse Pickard's household included Charles Crowell (age 75, born in NC), Elizabeth Crowell (age 68, born in Ireland), and Green L Crowell (age 26, born NC). Next door were William and Lavinia Petty, Section 3a. Green Lafayette Crowell was a brother of Elizabeth Melinda Crowell.

In the 1860 census, Jesse's household included Elizabeth Crowell, age 73. Next door are G L Crowell (age 38), Martha J (age 17), and Martha Rutherford (age 24). Green had married Margaret Rutherford and they had daughter Mary E. We believe Margaret had died before 1860, and their little girl lived with an aunt. We assume Martha Rutherford was Margaret's sister, but we haven't identified Martha J Crowell.

Next door on the other side of Jesse is the family of George M Whitten, with Mary E Crowell (age 5) as part of the household.20,29 We assume George was Mary E's uncle.

The census listings support JWF's stories that her great-grandmother "came from Ireland" but, so far, that is all we know about her; we doubt we'll ever find her maiden name or birthplace.

Recently we've found the following information about possible ancestors of Elizabeth Melinda Crowell.50,51 Please note that, although we have not confirmed all of this, we include it here because it seems reasonable. We hope a future researcher may use it as a starting point for further confirmation and/or correction.

I. Johan Peter Grauel was christened 6 Mar 1714 Langenselbold, Hessen, Germany. Near the border of Bavaria, Langenselbold is not far from Hanau, northeast of Frankfurt. In 1740 at age 26, Peter arrived in Pennsylvania from Rotterdam on the Loyal Judith. No parents or wife are shown on the ship's passenger list. He married Catharena Tausend /Thousand , who was born in the Palatinate, Germany. We don't know her birthdate or parents. We assume she immigrated with them, but we don't know when.

Peter and Catherena had at least four sons: Simon (c1743, below), William (c1745-c1822), George Martin (1747-1837), and Dietrich (c1750).

Peter died October 1763 Mecklenburg Co NC, age about 49. Catharena died after 26 May 1798.

A. Simon Crowell , born about 1743 in PA, married Elizabeth Crowell . Although we don't know her parents, we think her surname was Crowell; there were several other Crowell families in the area.

Simon and Elizabeth had at least seven children over twenty years: Samuel (1760), Peter (1765), Sarah (1770), John (1772), Charles (c1774, below), George Martin (1779), and William (1780).

Born about 1736, Elizabeth died 24 Sep 1828, age about 92. Simon died Mar 1838 Union Co NC, age about 95, and was buried Broom Cemetery, Union Co.

1. Charles Crowell , born about 1774 in NC, married Elizabeth [Crowell] . She was born about 1786 in Ireland, but we don't know her surname, parents, when she immigrated, or anything else about her.

Charles and Elizabeth had eleven children over 30 years: Rachel (1801), Martha (1805), Elijah Cass (1809), Mary (1811?), Henry, Mary Malinda (1811?), Evan A (1814), Michael Meachum (1819), Green Lafayette (1824), Charles Milton (1826), and Elizabeth Melinda (1831, page 3b-8).

Charles died between 1850 and 1860 in Smith Co TN, age 75-85, survived by his wife.

POSSIBLE ANCESTORS OF JOHAN PETER GRAUEL -- His parents are said to have been Conrad Grauel (1655-1700) and Magdalene Helene Dietrich (born 1667), and Conrad's father is said to have been Hans (Johannes) Grauel. There are, however, some rather obvious conflicts in dates in the various sources we've found. We believe that, if Conrad and Magdalene are Johan Peter's ancestors, a generation must be missing and they must be his grandparents.

Note: the German pronounciation of the letters G and K are somewhat interchangeable, and there are numerous spelling variations among Grauel descendants, such as Crowell, Krauel, Kroll, Croll, Croul, etc.

We believe the first syllable of Crowell would have been pronounced to rhyme with "now" (derived from the pronunciation of Grauel) rather than with a long "o" as in the bird.

Unfortunately, we aren't sure how Crowell was pronounced in our family. All we’re certain about is that JWF said Crowell was pronounced differently from the way most other families of that name pronounce it.

The following children are shown in Tennie and John's household in the 1900 census, dated 2 Jun 1900, Smith Co TN, Civil District # 10: Harkins, born Oct 1879; Maggie, born May 1881 (said to have had three children, moved to Texas and died there); Nance (Nancy?), born Jun 1885 (said to have had no children); Cleveland, born Nov 1885; Maud, born Aug 1887; Mary, born Mar 1888, below; Hershal, born May 1889; Gige (Lige?), born Nov 1892; John M, born Jun 1895; and Jesse, born Sep 1897.

We don't know why BFE's grandaunt was named Tennessee, but in those times many girls were named after states. She was born in the years leading up to the Civil War, perhaps her parents were showing their support for whatever their state would later do. Maybe it just denoted great fondness for their adopted home state.

JWF said John was unskilled and was not a good provider. For example, he preferred to go fishing rather than work, but was a kind and gentle man. JWF said she and the other children loved going there. She said John would take them swimming and out in a (row)boat on the Caney Fork River and they had such a good time.

She also said that, although Tennie had a very hard time as a result of her husband's lack of ambition, he was always good to her. A rather incredible example of the hardship was that they never had a well. All their water had to be carried from a neighbor or from a spring when they could find one that wasn't dry, sometimes as much as four miles away. Nowadays, this is hard to imagine.

(a) Urb6 Smith was born 8 Oct 1879. In the 1880 census he is shown as Urbin H, age 6/12. In the 1900 census he is shown as Harkins, presumably his middle name. He died 30 Nov 1911, age 32, and was buried Dr Gross’ Cemetery, Possom Valley, Smith Co TN. He is said to have had a son named Jim.

(b) Mary6 Smith, born Mar 1888, married Gordonville V Ash. In the 1930 census they were shown as renting on Rock Springs Rd. In their household were Gordonville (41), Mary (42), and Faye (5½).10

Born about 1889, he died about 1931, age about 42. Mary died 1969, age about 81. They were buried New Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, on Pea Ridge Road 3 miles south of Chestnut Mound.58

BFE and her mother and sister visited Mary in 1942. She had a small piece of land and a little house high above the road. She was one of the poorest people BFE ever knew, certainly the poorest one she ever spent the night with. The wood plank floor had cracks in it one could see between. There was absolutely no plumbing of any kind, indoors or out. She was very proud of a new cistern, to collect water from the roof, which was a major improvement in daily living for her. BFE doesn't remember for sure, but thinks she didn't have electricity. Mary was kindness itself, however, and so welcoming to them (she killed, cut up, and fried a chicken for their breakfast.) She was a warm good person who helped her neighbors. In 1992, John Douglas Wall took us to the site of Mary's house, near St Mary's Creek, in St Mary's Valley or Hollow, not far from Possom Valley, within greater Buffalo Valley.

i) Faye7 Pickard Ash, born 28 May 1926, married Thomas Edward Gibbs; three children. He was born 28 Sep 1920 Smith Co TN, son of Ernest C Gibbs and Elsie Armistead.

Life wasn't easy for Faye when she was young. One story JWF told was that sometimes it would be so cold and icy that Faye and other children, walking such a long distance to school, had to throw their books ahead of them up the hill and then pick them up, over and over.

Faye's mother Mary said she had had such hopes for Faye, because many of the neighbors would pay a dime for her to set their hair. Mary thought Faye would be able to go to beauty school and make a career for herself. But she married at age 16 and set up housekeeping in a tiny house, equally primitive, not far away. They were extremely poor also. BFE was impressed by a block of ice wrapped in an old quilt in a tin tub, and a kind of fence, made of sticks, on the little porch to keep the baby (a boy, about a year old) from falling off. In spite of this, Faye was very gracious.

Things improved later on, and she and her husband moved to Lebanon, Wilson Co TN, and had two more children. She may have died 10 Oct 2000, age 74, Lowell, Middlesex Co MA, perhaps living with one of her children, but we aren’t certain she is the person of this name who is referenced in the SSDI. 06/05, 12/05, 07/06

DESCENDANCYof

JOHN PICKARD (b c1725) and (--?--) [PICKARD]and

JOHN PICKARD and MARGARET WHATLEY (b c1755)from page 3b-1

John's parents are not known to usHis first wife's identity, parents and birthdate are not known to us

Margaret's parents were Michael Whatley and Catherine Bird

NOTE: unless otherwise annotated, much of the information on this and the following pages is from "Ancestry of Henry and Eleanor Pickard"4 and from a website by Randy Tanner.44

II. John1 (H?) Pickard's7 birthdate isn't known but for our convenience we estimate about 1725. He may have had 16 children over about 43 years, all born Orange Co NC.

We don't know the name of his first wife, when they married or when she died. His second wife, whom he married about 1778, was probably Margaret "Peggy" Whatley. She was born about 1755 Orange Co. Her parents were Michael Whatley and Catherine "Kitty" Bird.

From about 1753 John was a farmer, with about 400 acres on the north/east side of the Haw River, east side of Hardin's Creek, Orange Co. This was on the opposite site of the river from the farm of Henry Pickard, page 3b-1. John died 15 Feb 1812 Orange Co, age probably about 87.

Margaret was a Quaker and was "disowned" for marrying out of unity, but was later reinstated. Several of the children married into prominent Quaker families in the Cane Creek community of NC.

Information is available on the family of Michael Whatley (1720-1800). The parents of Catherine Bird (1725-1800) were Robert Bird III and Adicia "Dicey" Williamson. Michael was born Williamsburg VA and Catherine was born in King and Queen Co VA. They died in Greene Co GA.

-- Children of John Pickard and his first wife --

A. Henry2 Pickard was born about 1751. He married Rebecca [Pickard] before 1781; at least eight children: Jane, Rebecca, Polly, Catherine (married Thomas Lasley), Ruth (died before 1823 in TN), Sarah "Sally" (died 1861 Maydella, Cherokee Co TX), Alexander A, and Elizabeth.

Henry married Ellenor Woods 1 Aug 1815.44 He died 13 Sep 1833 Lawrence Co TN, age about 83.

BFE's aunt, Eleanor Anne Fisher, married Laslie Dickerson Duke, son of William Thomas Duke and Ruby Laslie, Section 15. We don't know whether there may be a connection here.

B. James2 Pickard, born about 1753, married Catherine Andrews -- see page 3b-20.

C. Sally2 Pickard was born about 1757. One researcher57 thinks Sally married David Efland (son of Peter Efland) and had son Jacob, who married Sally’s much younger half-sister Catherine, page 3b-19.

D. John2 Pickard, born about 1763, married Ruth Anne Forrest; fifteen children. He died 30 Oct 1826 Maury Co TN, age about 63.

We believe John Pickard was a brother of Henry Pickard. – see page 3b-1 for Henry's descendants and possible origins of the Pickard family --

"All-People" -- Section 3b {Table of Contents} page 3b- 19

E. Alexander2 Pickard, born Sep 1765, was co-executor of his father's will. He married Jane "Jenny" Morrow; eight children. Her parents were William Morrow and Jane "Jennie" Parks. Born about 1774, Jenny died 6 Nov 1807, age about 38, a few weeks after the eighth child was born.

Secondly, Alexander married Anna Bradshaw [Crutchfield] 22 Aug 1820; no children known to us. Her parents were Thomas Bradshaw and Lutitia Williams. Born 1782 Orange Co NC, she died 5 Oct 1852 Mt Pleasant, Maury Co TN, age about 70. Alexander died 24 Aug 1854 Mount Joy Community, Maury Co, age about 89.

F. Isaac2 Pickard, born about 1767, married Sarah Andrews 24 Dec 1794.40 He died 25 Oct 1828, age about 61, and she moved to Indiana about 1830. Born about 1766, she died about 1834, age about 68.

-- Children of John Pickard and (–?–) [Pickard] --

We don't know the actual birthdates of the children below (surely they weren’t all born about 1775), so we don't know whether the mother of these children was John's first wife, whose name we don’t know, or his second wife, Margaret Whatley, whom he married in 1778. Also, the birth order shown may be incorrect.

G. Rebecca2 Pickard, said to have been born about 1775, married Samuel Steel 10 Aug 1786. However, she would have been eleven when she married, so we think she was probably born earlier.

H. Frances "Fanny"2 Pickard, said to have been born about 1775, married William Crutchfield 19 Dec 1795.

I. Richard2 Pickard, said to have been born about 1775, married Nicey Chance 13 Jul 1802.

J. Elisha2 Pickard, said to have been born about 1775, married Susanna O'Daniel; one son, who had nine children. Susanna's parents were Henry O'Daniel and Jane Thompson. Elisha died 25 Dec 1834.

K. Michael2 Pickard died about 1825 Orange Co NC.

-- Children of John Pickard and Margaret Whatley --

L. Jesse2 Pickard,40,41 born about 1789 Orange Co, married Jeanny Workman 29 Jul 1814 Orange Co.

M. Catherine2 "Catey" Pickard, born 12 Apr 1791, married Jacob Efland 9 Jul 1807. His parents may possibly have been Catey’s much older half-sister Sally and her husband David Efland, page 3b-18. Catey died 5 Oct 1860 Maury Co TN, age 69.

N. Elijah2 Pickard, born about 1792, married Elizabeth Dickson 28 Sep 1812.

O. Daniel2 Pickard, born about 1793, married Margaret O'Daniel 13 Mar 1813; eight children born 1 Sep 1813 -- 18 Dec 1831. She was a sister of Susanna O'Daniel, who married Daniel's brother Elisha. Margaret's parents were Henry O'Daniel and Jane Thompson. Daniel died 7 Apr 1842 Orange Co NC, age about 49.

P. Thomas2 Pickard40,41 was born about 1794 Orange Co NC. He married Mary “Polly” Workman 16 Oct 1819 Orange Co; seven children. She was a sister of Jeanny Workman, who married Thomas' brother Jesse. Thomas died about 1859 Weakley Co TN, age about 65. Born about 1789 Orange Co, Polly died about 1874 Weakley Co, age about 85.

We note that two sisters married two brothers, twice in this family. 06/05, 12/05, 08/06

Henry's parents were James Pickard and Catherine AndrewsEleanor's parents were James Woody and Mary Laughlin

7. Henry3 Pickard7,21,40,44 was born 29 Jan 1794 Orange Co NC. He married Eleanor "Nellie" Woody 1 Aug 1815 Orange Co; possibly 17 children, all born Cane Creek MM (Monthly Meeting), Orange Co.

Her parents were James Woody and Mary Laughlin. Born 1 Jan 1796 Spring, Orange Co, Nellie died 1846 Salem Township, Henry Co IA, age 50. Henry died 21 May 1881, age 87.

These are the people about whom the informative manuscript Ancestry of Henry and Eleanor Pickard was written.4 It includes much more information about them and their descendants, most of whom were Quakers. We note that this family moved to Iowa, rather than to Indiana as most of Henry's family did.

An interesting story, from the Donnellson IA public library, is that a slave on his way to freedom in Canada in 1857 left his child with Henry and Eleanor Pickard, saying he would return for her, that her mother had been “sold down the river”. The Pickards sheltered the little girl, Mary, in their home. This was a dangerous thing to do; harboring a slave in the mid-1800s could result in a fine of $1000.

She lived with them about 20 years. In 1933 she came to a Pickard reunion in Donnellson as Mrs Wm G Mills. Volunteers at the library have found information on her name, her parents, her marriage, where she worked, and where she lived and died.

a) James4 Pickard, born 20 Nov 1816, married Amy Dixon.41

b) John4 Pickard, twin of William, was born 21 Dec 1817. He died 29 Jan 1818, age five weeks.

c) William4 Pickard, twin of John, was born 21 Dec 1817. He married Mary Jane Bell.

d) Jonathan4 Pickard was born 31 Aug 1819.

e) Samuel4 Pickard, born 28 Oct 1820, married Lucretia Moore.

f) Thomas4 Pickard, born 23 Jan 1822, married Esther Rhode.

g) Mary Ann4 Pickard was born 12 Feb 1823. She died 2 Apr 1824, age about 14 months.

We can't help feeling sad for this family. They lost their first daughter (after six sons) only eight days after the seventh son was born. This would have been incredibly hard.

h) Henry4 Pickard was born 25 Mar 1824. He died 2 Mar 1829, age almost five.

i) Catherine4 Pickard was born 19 Jul 1825. She died 18 Apr 1827, age 21 months. 06/05, 12/05, 06/06

k) Eli4 Pickard was born 5 Feb 1828.

l) Sarah Jane4 Pickard was born 25 Mar 1829, three weeks after her brother Henry died.

m) Eleanor4 Pickard was born 15 Jul 1831.

n) George4 Pickard was born 28 May 1833.

o) Elizabeth Laban4 Pickard, born 2 Nov 1834, married Albert Hunt.

p) Ruth Laban4 Pickard was born 2 Jun 1836.

We note that the name Laban was given to three children in this family. It probably came from Laban, uncle of Jacob and father of his two wives (Genesis 29:16, a scripture mentioned often in Quaker writings).

q) Hiram4 Pickard, born 18 Nov 1838, married Rebecca Almond 6 Jan 1858; nine children. They lived Lee Co IA.

Hiram joined Co E, 1st IVC (Iowa Volunteer Corps) in Feb 1863. During a drill shortly after he entered service, he was accidentally shot in his right forearm, shattering the bone. He remained in hospital most of the time until he was mustered out 25 Nov 1965.56

9. William A (or Hadley)3 Pickard7,8,21,40 was born 25 Feb 1799 Orange Co NC. He married Mary Siler 20 Mar (or May) 1823 Lick Creek MM (Monthly Meeting), Orange Co IN; at least eight children, all born Cane Creek MM, Orange Co. Her parents were Adam Siler and Sarah Hadley.49

Born 17 Oct 1801, Mary died 14 May 1866, age 64. William died 1 Dec 1872 Bloomingdale MM, Parke Co IN, age 73. His will was probably dated 25 Sep 1872.

Mary had brothers James, Jeremiah Hadley, and Philip. Her father Adam's will was dated 20 Jul 1844, with codicil 15 Dec 1847, and was probated 29 Aug 1848 Parke Co IN.8

Adam's grandfather Seillor came from Weimar, Germany to PA by 1745.We note that Siler City NC is west of Pittsboro. We believe it was named for named for Adam's

family, probably his brother Soloman, who owned 11,000 acres and 259 slaves. In 1997 we visited Siler City, looking for information about our Petty family, Section 3a. Perhaps

this is an early connection between the Pickard and Petty families.

a) Sarah4 Pickard was born 26 Jan 1825. She died 8 Oct 1842, age 17.

b) Siler4 Pickard was born 29 Jul 1828. He died 6 Jul 1829, age almost one year.
