AUTHOR BIOS

STEPHEN MARTIN is one of the most well-known and pervasive talents in entertainment. His work has earned him an Academy Award, five Grammy Awards (two for comedy, three for music), an Emmy, the Mark Twain Award and the Kennedy Center Honor. As an author, Martin’s work includes the plays Picasso at the Lapin Agile, The Underpants, and Meteor Shower. Also an accomplished banjoist, Martin created the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass, an award established to reward artistry and bring greater visibility to bluegrass performers.

EDIE BRICKELL released the debut multiplatinum album SHOOTING RUBBER BANDS AT THE STARS with New Bohemians in 1988. Her recent works include a 13-track collaboration with Steve Martin titled LOVE HAS COME FOR YOU. The album won a Grammy for Best American Roots Song and inspired the musical Bright Star. Their second album, SO FAMILIAR, is out now.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Around a year ago, we were just finishing the run of our last musical, Little Women, as the world began to shut down. Our students and faculty moved to online learning as we buckled down and hoped for a quick end to what we would soon come to know as the next year of our lives. Theatre has changed over these past 12 months and we have changed the way we make theatre, but I remain incredibly proud at what this department can do when we are faced with challenges. We have still put up a season of artistically relevant work that entertains and educates, and, to top it all off, we have done it safely.

This year our musical appears a bit different. Bright Star: Concert Version means that the script has been pared down in order to create a music-focused production that can be done in one act. The story remains, the characters remain, and the score remains, but the staging has been removed, or altered, to better work within the limits of social distancing and University safety protocols.

Every rehearsal, every meeting, and every showing are being presented safely and with the proper health considerations.

Bright Star: Concert Version is a show about new beginnings, and we hope this hour and a half of optimism allows you to welcome the idea that the sun is going to shine again … and that the next 12 months won’t resemble the last.

Enjoy the show, mask up, and stay safe.Joey Banks ’07

study abroad in London, or intern at The Actors’ Centre, experiences which have immensely impacted who I am as an artist.”
