The story of The Emperor’s New Clothes, by Hans Christian Anderson, was first published in 1837. This clever and witty tale is of an Emperor so vain that he ignores the cries of hunger and woe from his subjects in order to lavishly spend his money on fine clothing. He is a true peacock, only concerned with being admired. It is because of his vanity and pride that he is fooled into parading naked through the streets to “show off” his fine new robes, which are made from the finest magic and invisible cloth. The effects of the Emperor’s own greed and vanity bring about his downfall. He listens to his vanity and deceives himself into accepting the lie spun by the “weavers” that the invisible cloth is real. He must have this magical robe and be the most glorious looking Emperor ever! How often, even today, do we see the vanity and greed of people with power leading them to make self-serving decisions that negatively affect those with the least power in our societies? And all of this done because those with so much want more?
This wonderful adaptation embraces the power and magic of the Theatre which is to tell truths through illusion. With humor and warmth, this clever play reminds us of the dangers of self-deception and the importance of truth and justice; that we must keep exposing the Emperors of our day and age to show everyone just who they really are.
