ACADEMIC YEAR 2017-2018

Inauguration of Commerce Association

On 24th July, 2017 the Commerce Association activities for 2017-2018 and the golden

jubilee celebrations were inaugurated at Loyola Hall at 11:30 a.m.

The programme was commenced with welcome address by Dr. Lourdes.P.Rayen, the head of

the department followed by 50 years golden memories of the department was recalled as

“milestones of the department”, the chief guest address by Rev. Dr. Andrew francis, SJ,

principal, ST. Joseph’s college, Trichy; guest of honour is Mr. G. Saravanan, deputy general

manager, IDBI, Mumbai and sharing of memories was given by Rev. Dr. John Bosco and vote

of thanks by Dr. JeyaAni, the association-in-charge for the academic year 17-18.

Exchange Programme

The final year UG and PG students of our department were attended an orientation

programme for outgoing students conducted by XIBA as an exchange programme on 17th

June

2017.

International Conference

International conference was organized on 27th

July 2017 titled “Triple bottom line

Sustainability”

Commerce Girls Forum

Meetings for PG commerce girl students on 26-07-2017 and UG 23-08-2017 were conducted

separately to give guidance and counselling to the girl students and to solve their problems based

on their sharing.

Talent Expo 2017

In order to bring “light” the hidden talents of the commerce students, Talent Expo 2017, the

various intra departmental competitions were organized from 4th

sep to 11th

sep 2017. There were

20 events of Arts, Literary and stage events conducted in the afternoon from 2.30pm to 4.30pm

every day. The Valedictory Celebration of Talents Day Competitions was conducted on 11th

September, 2017 at 4.30 p.m.

Students Participation

On 5th

October 2017, our Students participated and won 1st prize in the event ‘Dance’ and 2

nd

prize in the event Business Quiz in the Intercollegiate Competitions organized by Lady Doak

College, Madurai. In the Business Quiz conducted by XIBA on 11th

October 2017, they won 1st

prize.

Commerce Alumni meet

Commerce Alumni meet was arranged for the 1984-87 batch students on 5th

October 2017.

The sharing of alumni helped the participants remember the unforgettable days of their college

life. It was also a pre-preparatory meeting for the golden jubilee celebration.

Dr. Kanagasabapathi Endowment lecture

On 13th

October 2017, endowment lecture was organized to the postgraduate commerce

students titled, “opportunities and challenges of entrepreneurs”. Mr. Rajagopal, proprietor of

Gem Industries, Coimbatore was the guest speaker of the day.

Memorandum of Understanding

The department signed an MOU with ITECH ACADEMY, Tirunelveli in the month of

December in order to enhance the students for internship training, placement, professional

competencies and soft skills.

Commerce Carnival

‘Commerce Carnival-2018’ was an inter-collegiate Department festival organized in a grant

manner on 20th

Dec 2018 .It was a good experience for our students to interact with other college

students. 29 colleges came to exhibit their skills in the one day Cultural Mela.

The programme was commenced with welcome address by Dr. Lourdes.P.Rayen, the head of

the department followed by Mr. Ananth, Cine Artist, was the Guest of Honour in the Inaugural

Function and Dr. Sundara Avudaiappan, I.B.S, Assistant Director and Station Head delivered the

chief guest address.

Golden Jubilee Celebration

The Golden Jubilee of the department was celebrated on 16th

Feb 2018 with the present

students and on 17th

Feb 2018 with the former students. On 16th

Feb, the programme was

commenced with welcome address by Dr. Lourdes P.Rayen the head of the department. Rev. Dr.

Peter Xavier, s.j., Loyola College, Chennai was the Chief guest of the day. Mr.Antony Thomas,

Managing Director, Nova Carbons, India Ltd and Mr. V. Krishna Ram was the Guest of honour.

Former heads and students of the department shared their memories.

On 17th

Feb, Rev. Dr. A. Antony Pappuraj.S.j., Secretary, St. Joseph’s College, Trichy

delivered Chief Guest address and Thiru. V. Subramaniam, Managing director, News 7 Tamil

was the guest of honour of that day.

Institution of a new endowment fund

The department is so delighted that a new endowment was instituted on 21st Feb 2018 in the

name of Prof. A. Esau Joseph. The department feels very proud that more number of

endowments had been created by the department of commerce in the recent past for the

upliftment of economically weaker students.

Educational Tour

The students of III B.Com were taken to Kerala for a two day Educational Tour and the

students of II M.Com to Moonar, Kerala on 1st& 2

respectively.

Industrial Visits

The PG students of our department visited Lofty Opticals in Nagercoil and Tanco wood

industry, Marthandam on 20th

Sep 2017. The students of I PG visited Ambika woods, Thenmalai

on 1st Mar 2018 andII B.Com to Kanam Latex Industries Pvt. Ltd. on 12

th Mar 2018 as

Industrial Visits.

Training on SPSS Package

Training on SPSS Package was given to Final year PG and M.Phil Students on 15th

Mar

2018. Mr. Benjamin Franklin, faculty in the dept. of social work was the resource person of the

programme. Students were trained to apply statistical tools for the data collected which will

facilitate them to do research.

Association Valediction

The valediction of the Commerce Association for the academic year 2017-18 was held on

22th

March 2018 at 11.30 am. Rev. Fr. Antonysamy, S.J., Secretary, St. Xavier’s College,

Palayamkottai was the chief Guest of the programme and gave away the prizes for the winners of

Talents day competitions held during the month of August, 2017.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2016-2017

The Commerce Association was inaugurated on 13th July, 2016. The inaugural ceremony was

presided over by our Principal, Rev.Dr.V.Britto, S.J. Rev. Dr.A. Antonysamy, S.J. and Rev. Dr.

S. Arockiasamy, S.J. gave the felicitation address. The inaugural address was given by Dr. Selva

Kumar, Principal of Pope's College, Sayarpuram, Tuticorin District.

The association organized Talents Day competitions from 31.08.2016 to 09.09.2016 for the

students of Commerce department. Twenty two events were conducted. Students participated in

large numbers in all these events which helped the students to identify and develop their inner

talents. The events include essay writing, elocution, turn quote, cartooning pencil sketching etc.

A guest lecture on "Incorporation of Joint Stock Company" was organized on 5th

December 2016

for the II year under graduate students. Our alumni Mr. Arun, Chartered Accountant was the

guest speaker.

The Department of Commerce and Department of Economics jointly organised a special lecture

on "The Impact of Demonetization on Common Man" on 19h December, 2017 for the UG

students.

This helped the students to gain more knowledge about impact of demonetisation. Dr. S.

Pushparaj, Associate Professor of Economics, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai was the

guest speaker.

The Commerce Carnival was held on 20th December 2016 in which 30 colleges from different

parts of Tamil Nadu participated. The chief guests for the event were Ma.Ka.Pa. Anand, Popular

TV-cum-Cine star and Mr. Franklin, TV-cum-Cine Artist.

Twelve competitions were conducted and 600 students participated in the events with much

enthusiasm. The valedictory function was presided over by our college Secretary Rev. Dr

Antonysamy S.J and our Principal Rev. Dr.V. Britto S.J.

The Commerce association organized a guest lecture on "Co-operative Form of Organization" on

6th

January 2017 for the II year under graduate students, Mr. Ruswelt Xavier was the guest

speaker.

On 25th January, 2017 an Endowment Lecture in the name of Prof. Thomas Puthenveedan on

"Forex Online Trading" was organized by the association. Mr. Satham Flussain, BlueMax

Capital Solutions Pvt.Ltd, Tirunelveli was the guest speaker.

On 8th

Feb 2017, National Seminar titled, “Contemporary HRM Practices for Excellence in

Business Performance” was conducted

The Department of Commerce in association with Tirunelveli branch of SIRC of ICAI organized

a special lecture on "Career Awareness on Professional Courses" for the undergraduate students

on 13h February, 2017. Mr. G.R. Dayalsankar, Charted Accountant & Vice-Chairman of

Tirunelveli Branch of SIRC of ICAI was the guest speaker.

On 15h February, 2017 the association organized Prof. A.Easu Joseph Endowment Lecture for

the PG and III B.Com students on "International Finance - A Beginner’s Perspective". Dr.S.

Madhavan, Associate Professor, Department of Management studies, M.S. University,

Tirunelveli was the guest speaker.

The III year UG students went to Mysore and Bangalore for their Educational tour on 17h and

18h February, 2017.

The department of Commerce organized a special lecture on "Orientation for Competitive

Exams” on 21st February, 2017 for all the undergraduate students. Mr. E. Santhana Mariappan,

the director of Vidiyal Foundation was the guest speaker.

The association organized two day work shop on the "Data Analysis for Research" on 24h and

25 February 2017 for all the M.Phil and Ph.D. scholars.

Dr. Manokaran, Associate Professor of Commerce, CPA College, Bodinayakanur and Dr. D.

Thirupathi, Head, Dept. of Commerce, Govt Arts College, Salem were the resource persons.

The PG students went on an industrial visit to Tuticorin. The III year UG students went to

Nagercoidl for their industrial visit. The l year UG students went to Tuticorin for their industrial

visit.

The M.Phil students attended the National and International seminars organized by various

colleges and presented the research papers during the seminar. The M.Phil research scholars also

published papers in the international and national journals and won the best paper awards also.

On 3rd

March 17, the association valediction was conducted. Rev. Dr. Casmir Raj was the guest.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2015-2016

The commerce association was inaugurated on 15th

July, 2015. The inaugural ceremony was

presided over by our Principal, Rev. Fr. Gilburt Camillus S.J. Our Vice-Principal, Rev. Fr.

SahayarajS.J gave the felicitation address.

The association has organised Talents day competitions for the students of our department.

Eighteen events were conducted. Students of our department participated in large numbers in all

these events. The events include essay writing, elocution, turn quote, cartooning, pencil

sketching etc., The association organised an endowment lecture on 7th

October, 2015 in the

reminiscence of Prof. Esau Joseph. This lecture was arranged for all the PG and III B.Com

students. ‘Logistics and supply chain management’ was the topic discussed in the endowment

lecture. Mr. David Raja, Senior Vice-president, St. John ICD, Tuticorin was the guest speaker.

An endowment lecture in the reminiscence of Prof. Thomas Puthanveedan was organized on 7th

January, 2016 on the topic “Economic Reforms & External sectors”. The key note speaker was

Prof. Tharcis Albin.

The association organized a one day work shop on the Application of statistical tools in social

science research on 28th

January, 2016 for all the II year PG and the M. Phil scholars of our

department. Dr. M. Manoharan, Associate Professor, CPA College, Bodinayakanur was the

resource person.

The Commerce association has organized a National Seminar on 29th

January, 2016 on the topic

“E- Business: A transformative Tool for Market and Economic Growth”. NET exam coaching

classes were organised by the department for the aspirants for about 15 days. A resource person

from US named Nanjil Peter, Fraud Examiner, USA gave a lecture on life style in US. All the II

year PG and M. Phil scholars participated in the programme.

Our I Year students Abiskek and Balaji won 1st prize in business quiz conducted by Francis

Xavier Engineering College on 12th

February, 2016. They also won the 3rd

prize in the quiz

competition conducted by St. Joseph’s College, Trichy on 25th

February, 2016 and the 1st prize in

the competition held by GVN College, Kovilpatti on 26th

February, 2016.

The I year PG students went on an industrial visit to Thenmalai on 19th

February, 2016. The II

year UG students went to Tuticorin for their industrial visit. The II year M.Com students went on

an educational tour to Munnar and Cochin on 11th

February, 2016. The III UG students went for

an educational tour to Cochin on 19th

and 20th

February, 2016. Our I B. Com students went for

an industrial visit on 9th

March, 2016 to Tuticorin.

An orientation cum training programme on “Stock Market Operations” was organized for the

students of commerce department on 11th

February, 2016. This helped the students to gain more

knowledge about stock market operations.

The commerce carnival was held on 29th

February, 2016. 19 colleges from Tamil Nadu

participated in the event. The chief guest for the event was Mr. Chandra Mohan, Blue Ocean

Film & Television Academy.

The event was presided over by Rev. Fr. Gilburt Camillus S.J. Eight competitions were

conducted and the students participated with much enthusiasm. The valediction ceremony was

headed by Dr. Kanagasabapathi our former head and our vice principal Rev. Fr. Sahayaraj S.J

gave away Prizes and distributed certificate to all the participants.

Prof. Bernard Chandra endowment lecture was organised by the association on 2nd

March, 2016

on the topic “Union Budget 2016-17 Impact on Commerce and Industry”.

The resource person was Dr. ShobanaNelasco, Associate Professor, Research Centre of

Economics, Fatima College, Madurai. The association valediction was held on 2nd

March, 2016,

our illustrious alumnus Mr. Raja Gopal was the guest of honour, the secretary of the association

Ms. FathimaFarhana presented the annual report.

Dr. C. Eugene Franco, Head of the Department gave the felicitation the Student achievers were

honoured with certificate of appreciation, by Rev. Fr. Principal, Dr. Gilburt Camillus S.J the

principal of the college.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2014-2015

On 15th

July, 2014 the Commerce Association activities for 2014-2015 was inaugurated The

program commenced with a prayer song and the Welcome Address by Dr. C. Eugine Franco, the

Head of the Department followed by the Oath taking of the Office Bearers, William of

II.M.Com, Ms. Mary Sylvia of I M.Com and Mr. R. Vivek of IIL B.Com. Rev. Dr. Gilbert

Camillus, S.J, Principal felicitated the gathering.

The Inaugural address was delivered by the Guest of Honour, MR. Dr. P.A. Marai Kumar

Chellaraj, Principal, St. John's College,Palayamkottai. The program came to with the vote of

thanks by the President of the Commerce Association for this Academic year, Mr. S. David

Appathurai.

On 21t July, 2014 the Commerce Association organized a General Motivational Programme for

Commerce students of our College. Mr. H. Vasantha Kumar, M.A., Ex. M.L.A & Founder-

Vasanth & Co. was the Guest Speaker who spoke on the topic "Vettri Padikkattu”(Ladder of

Success).

The programme was presided over by Rev. Dr. V. Gilburt Camillus, S.J.

A Guest Lecture on "English is Easy" was organized for the first year commerce students on 24th

July, 2014. Schs. Vasanth, SJ and Velan, SJ were the resource persons who made the session as

workshop and the students found it very useful.

On 07th August, 2014 a guest lecture on “Recent Development in Banking Services" was

arranged in EDRC. MF. P. Chezhian, Special Assistant, State Bank of India, Palayamkottai was

the resource person who presented the topic with practical examples to the students of Π B.Com.

A Guest lecture on "Effective Decision Making" was organized for the Post Graduate students of

our department on 8th August, 2014 at 11.30 a.m. in EDRC, Mr. S. Ratha Krishnan, Director,

Reach Training Academy, Tirunelveli was the resource person for the same who made it an

interactive session and help the students take effective decisions at the crucial time.

On 9th

September, 2014 the Association organized a guest lecture for Ⅱ B.Com students on the

topic, "Business Communication". Dr. Rita Rebekah, Asst. Dean, XIBA, Palayamkottai was the

resource person.

A Guest Lecture was organized on "Self Assessment Techniques" for Ist M.Com students on

11th September, 2014 at 11.30 am. Rev. Dr. C. Joe Arun, S.J., Director, XIBA, Palayamkottai

was the Guest Speaker.

T-Day competitions were conducted for the students of commerce Department from 04th August

to 25h August, 2014. There were 25 events of Arts, Literary and stage events conducted in the

afternoon from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm every day.

The Valedictory Celebration of Talents Day Competitions was arranged on 2nd September, 2014

in which Rev. Dr. T. Sahayaraj, S.J., Vice-Principal, St. Xavier's College, Palayamkottai

presided over the function and Dr. C. Eugine Franco, Head of the Commerce Department gave

the felicitation address.

An Orientation cum Training Programme on "Stock Market Operations" was organized for the

students of Commerce department on 17h December, 2014. gave the inaugural address and the

team of experts from Integrated Enterprises (India) Limited, Chennai were the trainers who

presented the topic in a useful manner.

There was yet another GL Series in the list of Guest Lectures arranged by the Commerce

Association, which was held on the topic, "Online Trading and Demat Operations" on 19h

December 2014. Mr. S.B. Ravi Chandran, Branch Manager and Mr. V. Murugan, Business

Development Manager, Reliance Life Insurance, Tirunelveli were the resource persons for the

same.

One of the every year phenomena of the commerce Department is the inter-collegiate

Department festival. This time 'Commerce Carnival-2015' was organized in a grant manner on

09 January, 2015 where 25 colleges participated in the one day Cultural Mela. Nanjl P.C.

Anbazhahan, Cine-Director cum Producer was the Guest of Honour in the Inaugural Function

and delivered the chief guest address. Dr.C.Eugine Franco, the Head of the Department gave the

introductory note. Rev. Dr. V. Gilburt Camillus, SJ, the Principal gave the presidential address

and Rev. Dr. T. Sahayaraj, S.J, Vice-Prinipal, felicitated the gathering.

Commerce Reunion-2015 was arranged for the alumni of Commerce department on 14h

February, 2015.

Around 150 Alumni Participated in the programme. Rev. Dr. Arockasamy, SJ, the Director of

Alumni Association and Rev. Dr. T. Sahayaraİ SJ, Vice-Principal were the chief guests for the

inaugural function. The sharing of alumni helped the participants remember the unforgettable

days of their college life.

The students of II B.Com were taken to Mysore and Bangalore for a two day Educational Tour

and the students of п м.com to Cochin. Kerala on 27, & 28s February, 2015 and 28a February &

01st March,2015 respectively.

The students of Ⅱ B.Com went to Keltron, Trivandrum and lst M.Com to Shifoi Flowers and

Venus water heaters, Thoothukudi on 12 January, 2015 and 13 March 2015 respectively for

Industrial Visits.

The valediction of the Commerce Association for the academic year 2014-15 was held on 11

March, 2015. Rev. Fr. Jesu Michael Das, S.J., Secretary, St. Xavier's College Palayamkottai was

the chief guest for the programme and gave away the prizes for the winners of Talents day

competitions held during the month of August, 2014.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2013-2014

The inauguration of Commerce Association was held on 11.07.2013, Dr.C Eugine Franco, Head

of the Department, explained the objectives for 2013-2014.

Rev. Dr. V. Gilburt Camillus S.J. Principal, presided over the function. The Inaugural address

was delivered by Mr. A. Arun, Propreitor of Arun & Co. Ms. N. Janani, Alumna of our

Department and Scale 1Officer, South Indian Bank, Chennai, was the Guest of Honour.

On 19.07.2013, a warm welcome was given to the freshers by the senior students. The

Presidential Address was given by the Head of the Department, Dr.C.Eugine Franco.A short film

"Bali" by Jesu Jupiter of III B. Com was released. On 24.07.2013, a workshop on study skills

was conducted for the l B.Com students at ED&RC.

On 29.07.2013, III BCom students underwent a motivational session on soft skills.

The Resource Person was Dr. A. Arockiadass, Associate Professor, who spoke on Interview

Techniques.

On 13.08.2013, felicitations were offered to Dr. C Eugine Franco, for his contribution to the

Department during the last 25 years.

A guest lecture on current trends in marketing was given to the Post Graduate students by Rev.

Dr. N. Casmir Raj S.J, Founder of LIBA, Chennai, on 27.08.2013,

Our students won the first prize for the event, "Test Your Knowledge, Speak in Silence, Treasure

Hunt" and third prize for "Stress Interview and Market Tune" in the Intercollegiate Competition

(COMCAR 13) organized at Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College, Sivakasi, on 05.09.2013.)

Fathima Afra and Gomathi Sankar won the first prize in Business Quiz, which was one of the

events of XIBATE 13, organized at XIBA on 11.10.2013.

On 19.12.2013, A Lecture on State policy and capability building in the Indian IT Sector for the

PG STUDENTS.

On 08.01.2014, Commerce Carnival was conducted. 110 students from 11 colleges came to

exhibit their skills.

The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. P. Annammal, Regional Joint Director of Collegiate

Education, Tirunelveli. The various events were Business Quiz, Logo creation, Ad Mad,

Shipwreck, Dumb Charade, Turn Coat, Best Manager and Poster making. Mr.D. Dalton,

Managing Director of Sri Meenakshi Motors Pvt.Ltd., delivered the Valedictory Address. The

American College Madurai, won the first prize and the runners were St. Mary's College,

Tuticorin.

Ten students of our department participated and secured the overall championship in HCC.COM

SYM 2014, organized at Holy Cross College, Nagercoil. On 05.02.2014, Sankar Ganesh of III.B

Com and Bala Murugan of I.B.Com won the first prize in FLAMES.COM 2014, organized at St.

John's College of Arts and Science. Our students secured first prize in Flip flop and second prize

in Group Dance in CACHET COM 2014, organized at Sri Parasakthi College for Women,

Courtallam, on 07.02.2014.

III B.Com students made an industrial visit on the 28th & 29th of January 2014 to Cochin and

Ernakulam. On 27th & 28th February 2014, II M.Com and M. Phil. students went on an

industrial visit to Cochin and Wonder La On 19th February 2014, II B.Com students made a visit

to Panakudi, for an industrial visit to gain experience in business activities.

The valedictory function was held on 11.03.2014. Rev. Dr. Jesu Michael Das gave the chief

guest address. Dr. C. Mahimai Arul Ignatius was the Staff-in-Charge in this academic year.
