Crews to keep lights on during festive seasonWhile most of us will join family and friends in traditionalChristmasDaycelebrations,spareathoughtforthededicatedErgon Energy workers who help keep the South-WestQueenslandpowersystemtickingover24hoursaday,sevendaysaweekduringthefestiveseason.Many staff will sacrifice Christmas with their families tomonitor,manageandrespondtooutagesacrossSouth-WestQueensland’s vast electricity network of more than 43,000kilometresofpowerlines,associatedsubstationsand260,000powerpolesoveralmost400,000squarekilometres.Crewsalreadyhaverespondedtoanumberofstormsoutsidetheir normal hours this summer and they will be ready torespond again during the Christmas and New Year longweekends.General Manager Operations Dave Heberlein said it wasimpossibletoavoidorpredictwhattheweatherwouldbring.“ErgonEnergyhasarobustnetwork,buttherealityisthatourextreme summer storms will cause damage resulting inoutagesforourcustomers,“MrHeberleinsaid“It’sourresponsewhenthosestormshappenthatmakesthedifference–evenonChristmasDay.”

Looking Back…Descendants Found

Frominformationprovidedbyseveralsources,descendantsofthefamilyofPte.JamesRobertSmith,killedintheBattleofFromellesin1916,havebeenfound.AgranddaughterofFrancisDavidSarjeant,ahalfbrotherof James Robert Smith, and his wife Betsy, sang at theweddingofJoyceDougallandRonGordonin1951andPatandJuneLawsonhavegivencontactdetailsforthefamily.Althoughthereisnoconnectionbetweenthetwofamilies,Ms.JillianTrethewey,theGlengallanSmithfamilyhistorian,has made contact with descendants of the East TalgaiSmithfamily.OnecomplicationtothetaskofidentifyingthebodyofPte.JamesSmithisthefactthathehadonlysistersontheSmithsideofhisfamily,andhishalfbrotherFrancisDavid Sarjeant, had only daughters. Apparently DNA iseasiertotracebetweenmaledescendants.ThestoryofJamesRobertSmithasweknowit,isthathewasbornatEastTalgaionthe29thMarch1893,thesonofJames Smith and Harriett, formerly Sergeant, nee Flint.James Smith snr. was a groom at East Talgai. JamesRobertSmithattendedtheHendonStateSchool.Hewouldhavecaught the trainatEllinthorpRailwayStationasdidotherchildrenofEastTalgaiemployees including the lateMr.Reg.Rix.The1903electoral roll records JamesandHarriettSmithliving at East Talgai Station where James was a stationhand.James Robert Smith joined the Star ofAllora ProtestantLodge in1910.Hisoccupation isgivenas farmhand.Heenlistedonthe12thDecember1915andwaslaterpostedtothe31stBattalioninFrancewherehewaskilledinactionon the 20th July 1916. His name appears on theAlloracenotaph, the Warwick cenotaph, the P. A. F. S. O. A.honourboard,andappearedontheHendonhonourboard(lostinthe1926schoolfire).AheadstonewaslatererectedtohismemoryattheWarwickcemetery.
