RegistrationInsurance Requirements

You will be required to obtain proper Delaware car insurance when you go to register your vehicle. This is a necessary requirement in order to help reduce the number of uninsured drivers on the road, which can often result in high costs if you are involved in any vehicle accident.

Your insurance company will issue your proof of insurance by providing you with a Delaware insurance card, which you must keep in your car at all times to present when needed. When you go to register your vehicle, you will need to have it insured. By signing the vehicle registration application, you are asserting that your vehicle is properly insured in the state of Delaware.

In order to be able to apply for your vehicle registration, it will be mandatory that you obtain liability insurance before you are allowed to register and legally drive it without any consequences. If you are involved in a car accident, it is important that any and all damages or injuries you cause someone else can be paid for without causing you financial difficulty.

The minimum insurance requirements in Delaware are as follows:

Bodily Injury Protection (per person): $25,000

In order for you to be able to drive your vehicle in Delaware, it must be covered by a state-approved insurance company. Out-of-state insurance plans will not be accepted. The insurance plan must be maintained valid even when your vehicle is no longer in use. If you are pulled over by a police officer or audited by the DMV office and are unable to provide any proof of your vehicle’s insurance, you may face certain consequences. These consequences can include a minimum $1,500 fine on your first offense and a minimum $3,000 fine for subsequent offenses, as well as having your driver’s license suspended for up to six months. If you are audited, you will need to have your insurance company submit a Delaware Insurance Certification (Form FR-19) to the DMV office.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding having your driver’s license suspended due to lack of vehicle insurance in Delaware, contact your nearest DMV office.

Bodily Injury Protection (per accident): $50,000

Property Damage (per accident): $10,000

Renewing YourVehicle Registration

As with many DMV documents, such as your driver’s license, your vehicle registration will eventually expire and need to be renewed. When your vehicle registration is expiring, it is your responsibility to attend to it to prevent any lapses in your registration. Although many states send reminders when car registrations are about to expire, Delaware only sends reminders to drivers who have specifically requested to receive them.

If you would like to receive a renewal notice, you must take the following steps:

Your vehicle will be required to be inspected every two years once it is five years or older; the inspection will need to be completed up to 90 days before your renewal date. Any vehicle younger than five years old will not be required to obtain an emission inspection before renewing your registration.

When it is time to process your vehicle registration renewal, the fee will be based on your vehicle’s type:

Visit the DMV Vehicle Registration Expiration Notification website.

Visit the DMV office.

Fill out the form with your personal information and submit it.

Provide proof of you vehicle insurance.

If you have elected to receive reminders, the DMV will remind you of your registration expiration date 90, 60 and 30 days before your registration expires.

You can also go to a DMV office in person and request to be notified electronically. You will then receive an email or phone call as your registration renewal notification when the time comes to renew. If your vehicle does not require an inspection or your email is not on file with the DMV office, you will receive a renewal notification by regular mail.

Passenger Vehicle: $40 per year

Commercial Vehicle:

• First 5,000 pounds: $40 per year

• Each additional 1,000 pounds: $18 per year

These fees can be paid through cash, check, money order, or any valid Discover, Visa, MasterCard, American Express debit or credit card. If you are renewing by mail, you must pay with a check. You cannot pay with cash when renewing by mail.

LicensePlates

When you go to register your vehicle at the Delaware DMV office, you will automatically be assigned a license plate number. This will mean that every time you go to renew your vehicle registration, your license plate will also be renewed.

The DMV office will provide you with a decal to attach to your license plate. The decal will state the date of expiration for your vehicle registration. You will be responsible for keeping your license plate valid at all times in order to legally drive in the state of Delaware.

You can obtain a standard Delaware license plate when you register your vehicle. However, this is not your only option. Instead, you can choose to get a plate that best fits your tastes either in design, message or both. You do not have to settle for standard license plates. In the state of Delaware, you have the option of obtaining a license plate that fits your personality, hobbies or interests if your request is approved by the Delaware DMV.

Getting Custom PlatesThere are many different options for you to choose from if you are looking to obtain a personalized license plate for your vehicle. Some plates may be ordered by mail with the appropriate application. The applications vary depending on the type of plate, and you can find the order-by-mail applications on the specialty license plate page. Please read each application thoroughly and follow the directions on the application for the license plate of your choice. A few of the available by-mail license plate applications include:

The Animal Plate application.

VehicleSafety Tips

The most important consideration to keep in mind before you begin driving any vehicle is that both you and the vehicle are well prepared for any trip you make. This means checking and making any changes to your vehicle or your behavior to make sure that you are able to drive safely at all times.

Emergency KitOne of the essentials to safe driving is having a basic emergency kit available in your vehicle at all times. This kit should include basic items such as water, extra batteries, rope, a first aid kid, matches, a whistle, etc. During winter months it is also important to carry items such as blankets, non-perishable foods, extra gloves, socks and a shovel.

Page 18 | Car-Reg.org

Page 19: Delaware Car Registration...Delaware, you will have 60 days to register your vehicle with the Delaware DMV by following the out-of-state resident registration steps. Provide proof

Winter DrivingOne of the most dangerous times to drive is during the winter, especially if you live in an area where it snows. Therefore, it is best to consider these tips to drive safely during the winter.

Avoid Rushing

Roads are often covered in snow and ice after it snows, so instead of driving fast and risking an accident in a rush to get to your destination, try leaving a few minutes earlier than usual. This will allow you to drive slower and help you avoid rushing other drivers by not tailgating them if they are going slower.

Do Not Panic If You Skid or Slip

In the case that your vehicle skids or slips while driving, make sure you do not panic and slam down on your brakes. Instead, all you need to do is apply slow and even pressure on your brakes until you stop. This will prevent you from spinning further out of control.

Check Your Vehicle

Before you even leave your house, make sure your vehicle’s controls, brakes, tank, tires, antifreeze, exhaust, etc. are all working properly. It is also important that you remove all ice and snow from your car before you begin driving. This prevents the snow from blocking your view while you drive.

Page 19 | Car-Reg.org

Page 20: Delaware Car Registration...Delaware, you will have 60 days to register your vehicle with the Delaware DMV by following the out-of-state resident registration steps. Provide proof

Drinking and DrivingEvery year, thousands are killed as a result of drinking and driving. These deaths can be very easily prevented. It only requires that you plan ahead of time by taking certain steps.

Even before you begin drinking, you should arrange for someone else to be the designated driver. In the case that your designated driver also becomes intoxicated, it is important that you arrange to take a taxi or another safe form of transportation. If you see someone who you suspect is drunk, and that person exhibits signs of intoxication while driving, such as making wide turns, weaving, swerving, braking erratically, turning abruptly, etc. call 911 and notify the proper authorities about the drunk driver. Also make sure to avoid drunk drivers on the road to ensure your own safety.

Using Your CellphoneDriving while using your cellphone is one of the most dangerous actions you can take because during the few seconds your attention is diverted to your phone, a major accident could occur. Therefore, make sure you do not text, use the internet or make calls while you drive to prevent accidents.

What to AvoidDriving is not always a relaxing experience. There are certain actions that can be both an annoyance and a danger to you while on the road driving. These issues are often avoidable if you make sure to take the necessary steps towards preventing them, as well as stopping them after you discover them.

Car Accidents

The best way to avoid car accidents is to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive and will not cause you any problems. To do this, you only need to regularly check that your brakes are functioning properly, your tires are inflated and not worn out, and that the steering and suspensions are maintained regularly by a mechanic and will not fail while you drive, especially at high speeds.

Wasting Gas

Due to the price of gas, you may begin to start looking for

ways to save on expensive trips to the pump. Fortunately, saving on gas is possible if you take a few steps toward ensuring that you waste less gas.

Some of the ways you can start saving gas are by not using air conditioning, not leaving your engine running and avoiding driving above 60 mph. These actions are preventable and not necessary for you to drive. Therefore, you can quickly reduce the amount of gas you waste.

Another way to save on gas is to make sure that your vehicle is functioning properly. You can do this by checking that your tires are properly inflated and that you keep to car’s maintenance schedule.

Aggressive Driving

Aggressive driving and drivers should both be avoided to prevent any on-road aggression or accidents. Aggressive driving is categorized as exhibiting behaviors such as tailgating, verbal or physical harassment of another driver, preventing another driver from merging or passing, etc.

If you are an aggressive driver, you are putting others at risk every time you do any of the above behaviors. If you encounter a frustrating situation on the road, instead of becoming aggressive, take a moment to breathe and relax before moving on.
