The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is implementing a new, secure card design. It has a fresh new look with features that are unique to the State of Delaware. The new driver license and identification cards (DL/ID) will be issued June 2018. The current card design will also be in circulation until the previous cards expire.

Names - The names will appear in order of the last name, then first and middle (first and middle are on the same line).

Color Code - The document banner is color-coded according to the document type.

Organ Donor - If a red heart appears on the document, the holder has volunteered to be an organ donor.

Medical Indicator - A blue medical indicator may appear on the document as a means for the holder to share a medical condition to those giving emergency medical care. The specific medical condition will appear on the back of the document. The medical indicator is a voluntary option, and not a requirement.

Reverse Side - The reverse side of the driver license contains a description of the vehicles which the holder is licensed to drive, describes each endorsement and restriction in clear text, has two barcodes and lists the Division’s website, holders birth date, and an image of the Blue Hen.

Delaware produces Federally Compliant Driver License and Identification Cards that conform to the federal identification standards as defined by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Real ID Act of 2005. The credential’s design and security features are improved to reduce fraud.

The DMV will continue to issue both federally compliant and non-compliant DL/IDs to Delaware residents. It is not necessary to request a new card on or after June 2018, if the current document is valid.

A Federally Compliant DL/ID Card will be required to enter federal facilities and all domestic aircraft travel in the near future.
