INTRODUCTION….

Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) can be described

- network of railway lines “dedicated” for the

movement of freight trains

Freight means goods transported in bulk by truck,

train, ship, or aircraft

Such DFCs are separate from the passenger

railway networks to ensure uninterrupted movement

of the freight trains

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

In April 2005, the Project was discussed

-at the Japan-India Summit Meeting

Prime Ministers of India and Japan - made a joint declaration for feasibility; and - possible funding of the dedicated rail freight corridors.

The feasibility study report was submitted to Ministry of Railways in October 2007

Under the Eleventh Five Year Plan,

- Ministry of Railways is constructing a Dedicated Freight Corridor

Covering about 3300 route km long two routes

Two routes are

- The Eastern Corridor

- The Western Corridor

These two corridors are interlinked at Khurja in

Uttar Pradesh

CORPORATION OF INDIA

Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India

(DFCCI) has been designated by Government of India,

- undertake planning & development

-mobilization of financial resources and construction

-maintenance and operation

of the Dedicated Freight Corridors

Registered as a company under the Companies Act

1956 on 30 October 2006

It’s a Public Sector Unit.

In the first phase, DFCCIL will be constructing two

corridors

- the Eastern Corridor from Ludhiana in Punjab to

Dankuni in West Bengal

-the Western Corridor from Jawaharlal Nehru Port,

in Mumbai, Maharashtra to Tughlakabad,

Delhi/Dadri

PLANNED DEDICATED FREIGHT CORRIDORS

East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor - connecting Kolkata and Mumbai, 2,000 km-long

North-South Dedicated Freight Corridor -connecting Delhi and Chennai, 2,173 km long

East Coast Dedicated Freight Corridor - connecting Kharagpur with Vijayawada, 1,100 km East Coast corridor

South-West Dedicated Freight Corridor -connecting Chennai and Goa, 890 km-long -

This DFC goes through Bangalore-Chennai Industrial Corridor promoted by Japan & India and as a part of Bangalore-Mumbai Economic corridor promoted by UK & India.

Bangalore - Chennai Dedicated Freight Corridor

- DFC goes through Bangalore-Chennai Industrial

Corridor promoted by Japan & India.

- Proposals to extend this line to Mangalore

* To connect India's biggest Petrochemical

complex, international air-cargo facility(direct flights

to gulf and Europe) and major seaport in

Mangalore.

SANCTIONED DEDICATED FREIGHT CORRIDORS

Western Dedicated Freight Corridor,

- Dadri, Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port,

Mumbai — 1,468 km

Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor

-Ludhiana, Punjab to Dankuni, West Bengal —

1,760 km

EASTERN CORRIDOR

This corridor will cover first 447 km of Ludhiana -

Dhari - Khurja section with single electrified track

After this the remaining line will be double track

electrified up to Dankuni in West Bengal

It is going to be a broad gauge corridor

Due to lack of space the section from Ludhiana in

Punjab to Khurja in Uttar Pradesh will be single line

electrified.

Locale - Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West

Bengal / Jharkhand, India

Termini - Ludhiana, Punjab

Dankuni, West Bengal

Operator(s) - Indian Railways

Technical

Line length - 1,839 km (1,143 mi)

Track gauge - 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) Indian broad gauge

WESTERN CORRIDOR

Western Dedicated Freight Corridor or Western DFC is a proposed freight corridor in India by Indian Railways.

Corridor will cover a distance of 1483 km and would be electrified with double line operation

Will begin at Dhari near Delhi in the state of Haryana

Covering a new patch of railway between Dhari -Rewari

This will connect two most important cities in India

- Delhi (The national capital of India); and,

- Mumbai (The commercial capital of India)

It terminates at JNPT at Nhava-Sheva near Navi

Mumbai in state of Maharastra.

Status - Approved in Indian Rail Budget 2014-15

Locale - Delhi NCT, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat

and Maharashtra, India

Termini - Dhari, near Delhi

CONCLUSION

Focus areas for the project

-Upgrading of transportation technology,

- increase in productivity; and

- reduction in unit transportation cost

o Need for freight corridor

-Heavy coal movement

-Infrastructure construction

-Booming international trade
