1996: the event of the year was TORNOS’s presen-tation of the new automatic DECO 2000 capacity7/10 mm (7/10a). Same revolutionary concept has now generated thenew DECO 26a. This new step towards the future, based on ourexperience with DECO 2000 7/10a, allows us tosupply today the DECO 26a.This latest addition to the DECO family is based onthe well-known principles of the previous machines,just bigger!

A major development in numerical control.The axis paths are calculated and memorised bycomputer on tables (virtual cams).A clock synchronises path reading (virtualcamshafts).As opposed to conventional NC which loses vastamounts of time in calculating and transcoding theG code into machine language, the machine controlmerely reads the tables generated by the TB-DECOand sends control pulses.Added to the fact that this process now makes itpossible to execute operations which are highly dif-ficult, if not impossible with conventional NCmachines, the TB solution also offers many otherbenefits:◆ no unnecessary inspections◆ maximum flexibility◆ programming freedom◆ machine speed, independent of the machine

processor which quickly goes out of date.Consequently, the inevitable passage of time andrapid developments in data processing will notaffect the performance of the DECO 2000, since allcalculations and optimisations are executed “offmachine”, at the same rate as developments in dataprocessing, on a simple PC.The process of energy optimisation is anotheraspect guaranteeing the long life of the DECO.All paths are executed “just-in-time”. Why acceler-ate or brake suddenly, if smooth, flexible movement,which conserves energy and is kind to the machine,is possible? This optimisation gives a deceptive

appearance of slowness when watching themachine operate. However, do not be fooled – theDECO is at least 20 % faster than a conventional NC(according to the part).

The patented TB-DECO interface has been entirelydeveloped by TORNOS. It takes into account all theaspects of the specific programming and machiningmethods of sliding headstock automatics.Running on Windows™, it also offers the easy useof that well known interface.The system is ergonomic and permits simple, logi-cal and rapid programming.A simulator permits a fast display of thepaths.Once the programme has been preparedwith the software, it can be transferredimmediately to the PNC-DECO control. Allthe programming operations are effectedautomatically.It is possible to programme in any place,on any PC with a minimum recommandedconfiguration of Pentium 400, 64 Mb Ramrecommanded.The physical link is Ethernet connected to a com-puter next to DECO 2000 or by Memory Card. Thecomputer may be a work-station or a portable PC.Direct programme transfer from the programmingoffice is, of course, possible if the office is con-nected on-line.To guarantee the optimal performances with the TB-DECO programming software, it was determinedthat additional learning tools were needed.

To offer the ultimate high-performance machine,which can easily be adapted to meet customerrequirements, DECO 26a is fitted with the modularsystem of tool interchangeability, which is alreadyoperational on the DECO 20a. Coupled to a preset-ter, these are the ideal method for saving time.The highly equipped machine comprises 10 axeswith independent counter-spindle and end unitattachment, as well as 21 tools, of which 15 areturning. In addition C1 axes (spindle) and C4 axes(counter-spindle) can be added which furtherenhance its potential.

Optimal machining conditions are offered by themachine’s ergonomics and simplicity; with goodvisibility of the machining area.The unique features of the numerical control permitthe following operations with the high productivityof a cam controlled machine:◆ Turning with two tools at the same time, the tools

being separately interpolated. Rough turning andfinishing in the same operation.

◆ Cross operations interpolated with 4 driven spin-dles and Y-axis for cross-milling, eccentricdrilling, slotting, etc.

◆ Polygon milling of flats or contours at the guide-bush (rotation speed synchronized).

◆ End attachment (2 numerical axes) working inde-pendently with four fixed or driven spindles.

◆ Threading and tapping operations by the differen-tial threading principle, without any loss of pro-ductivity.

◆ Simultaneous turning and drilling (with optimisedprogrammed speeds and feeds).

◆ An independent pickoff spindle with 3 numericalaxes, allowing the centering of the working posi-tions, the availability of 7 counter-operationspositions, the optimization of the counter-opera-tions (100% in hidden time), the linear and circu-lar interpolation on 2 or 3 PNC axes for opera-tions like turning, threading, milling, milling withaxis C, increases the range of possibilities offeredby DECO 26a.

◆ Main spindle and opposite spindle have program-mable spindle positioning for all kinds of millingoperations or other machining requests.

◆ Optimized management of feeds and speeds (noexcessive efforts on material). Tools enter thematerial at the ideal moment, no waiting time.

◆ C-axis function at main and opposite spindle. Per-manent indexing will permit to produce very spe-cific shapes.

◆ Cross operations at the guidebush with fourrevolving spindles and Y axis enabling e.g. crossmilling, off centre drilling, slotting or generatingof gear teeth.

◆ Milling of inner/outer threads by whirling (appli-cations in medicine and dentistry).

◆ Milling of threads by interpolation of 3 axes(including cross tapping)
