Dear Trelawny Families:

A big thank-you to all our families for their support through the fall while we worked through the ‘political’ issues. Throughout this time, your children have continued to thrive both in and outside the classroom. Thanks to our teachers and the student council we have continued school wide character education and engaged in cooperative games, spirit days and community circles.

We are beginning to identify, as a learning community, the global issues that are important for sustaining a community. At the heart of the work is the belief that when we act together, we change the world. This belief is driving a movement to shift our thinking from it is all about ‘me’ to the power of ‘we’. Me to We is emphasizing that every action we take is one with purpose, because we know our future is created by what we do today. It is embracing adventure, exploring the planet and making choices that have a positive impact on tomorrow. This aligns well with Restorative practices and discussing important issues in community circle daily.

In this newsletter are important information, news about what is happening in the classrooms, and notification of upcoming events. At Trelawny we communicate with parents in a variety of ways; the newsletter is one of them. Newsletters are provided usually every 6 to 8 weeks, however, information may also be shared through twitter, e-mail, and synervoice.

In the interest of improved sustainability in the New Year we will no longer be sending a paper copy of the newsletter home. The newsletter is available on our website and will be e-mailed to families. The December newsletter will be sent home with students AND e-mailed. If you do not receive the December newsletter by e-mail please notify the school so we can ensure we have your e-mail correctly recorded.

You will have received a synervoice message indicating that Progress Reports for grades 1 to 5 will be sent home on December 14th. Progress reports will indicate your child’s developing learning skills and how they were progressing in core subjects between September and the end of October. Should you have question about the observations documented please contact your child’s teacher.

Kindergarten observations will be during the week of November 30th through December 5th in the morning.

Lastly, on behalf of the staff at Trelawny, just in case we do not see you at the holiday sing or the awards assembly in December, we would like to wish everyone a happy and restful holiday…and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Ms. C. Parr Mr. DzisPrincipal Vice Principal

friends. We look forward to our new registrations.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS

We had a great turnout to our school council meeting in November. During the meeting we determined to once again support students through fundraising by directing money towards the classrooms, the library, and to the Grade 5 graduation. Finally, if money is raised at the June Fair, it will be used to begin purchasing new risers for the choir.

Current fundraisers are:

PizzaFundscripLunchLady

Fundscrip is an easy way for parents to support the school. It is a program that allows the school to earn back money based on purchasing gift cards.

Gift cards can be purchased for a variety of stores, are preloaded and a great way to give a gift to someone during the holidays. Please visit our website if you did not receive the information sent home on Friday November 20th.

Supporting this program provides needed support for classrooms and the library. Thank-you!

The next School Council meeting will be January 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the staff room. Everyone is welcome. Child minding is available.

STUDENT ABSENCE

Good punctuality and regular attendance is important for a student’s success at school. The morning entry bell rings at 8:40 a.m. and classes begin at 8:45 a.m. Students who arrive late disrupt the lesson for other students and miss valuable class time. Parents are asked to please phone the school as early as possible and leave a message to report a child’s absence. Call 905-824-0360, and press ‘1’

There is a sign-in sheet in the office for students who arrive after the school bell.

SYNERVOICE/Email/Twitter

The School uses a variety of ways to communicate with parents including e-mail, synervoice (voice messaging system) and texting. Due to new Spam legislation we require new families give us written permission to be included in the synervoice or e-mail distribution list. Please see the consent form package for more information regarding these services.

During the day, teachers and/or administration may ‘tweet’ out what is happening at the school. In addition, individual teachers may have their own class twitter account and blogs which they will share with you. You can follow the school on twitter @TrelawnySchool.

KISS & RIDE

Please remember: there is NO STOPPING to assist children out of the car or carseats in the Kiss and Ride. Please be courteous to everyone. Parents should not be getting out of the car while in the Kiss and Ride lane. To keep the system moving, it is important that children are ready to exit the car on the Passenger side of the car (the side facing the school). Anything else is dangerous.

GOOD NEWS

Sylivester has Graduated Many families will be familiar with Sylivester; the Trelawny foster child that has been sponsored for approximately 10 years. The good news is that Sylivester is employed and able to be self-sufficient.

LIBRARY NEWS FOR NOVEMBER

My name is Amanda Lucic, and I am the Teacher Librarian. It has been great getting to know your children this year and learning about what they like to read!

If you hear your child saying that they visited the “Wolf Den”, don’t be alarmed as we this is what we have named our library. A wolf den is a place where wolves get together as a community, and this is how we view our library space – a great place for the Trelawny Timberwolves.

I would appreciate if you could take some time to review the library information below:

When will my child be visiting the library? All primary classes come to the library for a library period or book exchange time each week. Here is when each class comes:

K1, McIntosh/Ward – Day 5K2, Davis/Peters – Day 3K3, Crawford/Miller – Day 2K4, Black/McCabe-Miller/Hamou – Day 4Grade 1, M-M – Day 1Grade 1, Chaar – Day 3Grade 2, Minson – Day 1Grade 2, Gunn – Day 2Grade 3, Golba – Day 3Grade 3, McIntosh – Day 1Grade 3, Tsang – Day 2

Please help your child to remember to bring his/her library books on this day each week. The library is also open for Reading At Recess every

Page 4: December newsletter 2015 - Peel District School …schools.peelschools.org/1567/Lists/SchoolNewsLetters... · Web viewThis belief is driving a movement to shift our thinking from

morning recess. This is a chance for students to visit if they need to get new books, to complete homework or other class work, to do research, or if they want to read. Junior students have the opportunity to exchange books during Reading at Recess, and at open library times throughout the day.

What happens with overdue, lost, or damaged books?Your child will be reminded about any items that need to be returned by myself or the classroom teacher. If they are still not returned, a letter will be sent home to let you know about the missing or damaged item(s), as well as the fee for replacing them. It would be appreciated if you could help your child to find these books as lost and damaged items are very costly to the library. If your child has already returned the book, please let me know and I will look for it. Thank you.

Upcoming Events:Timbertots for preschoolers starts on Friday, December 4th (see information below)

-the Book Fair will be at the end of April.-multicultural story times will be starting soon

How can I help my child with reading?I am sure you have heard this before, but the best thing you can do is to ensure that your child is reading on a daily basis. Have a regular time set aside each day for reading to or with your child, and talk to him/her about what he/she is reading. Model your love of reading by ensuring your child also sees you reading regularly too. Research shows that the more children read, the better they will be at reading AND writing.

Feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions about the school’s library program.

Attention Parents of Preschoolers:Please Join us for Timbertots!

Friday, December 4 from 9-9:45am in the Library

Timbertots is a program for preschool children and their parents. It is designed for children who will be starting Kindergarten in the next school year as it is a way to introduce them to our school and some of the activities they might experience in a Kindergarten classroom. It will run once a month until February, and then there will be a session of weekly visits after Kindergarten registration. More details will come about this. Our first Timbertots is on Friday, December 4 th from 9-9:45am in the library. If you know of someone with a preschool

child, please let them know. We look forward to seeing you on December 4!

Upcoming Timbertots dates: Friday, January 8th and Friday, February 5th, both from 9-9:45 at the Trelawny library.

Happy reading!Mrs. Lucic

CRAYOLA COLORCYCLE

We have started a new program at Trelawny called “Crayola Colorcycle”. We collect old crayola markers that don’t work anymore and we will be sending them to the Crayola headquarters to be recycled. If you have any old crayola markers that don’t work, instead of throwing them away, you can bring them to the school’s library and put them into the Crayola Colorcycle box. Please make sure that they are only Crayola markers as Crayola won’t take other kinds. Thank you for helping the earth and helping us to recycle crayola markers.

Apply for French Immersion by Jan. 29, 2016

If your child will be starting grade 1 in September 2016, one of the important choices you will make is whether you want to consider French Immersion (FI). To find out more about the program, visit www.peelschools.org/French

Page 6: December newsletter 2015 - Peel District School …schools.peelschools.org/1567/Lists/SchoolNewsLetters... · Web viewThis belief is driving a movement to shift our thinking from

The application form for grade 1 FI for the 2016-17 school year will be available online at www.peelschools.org/French as of Monday, Nov. 23, 2015 at 1 p.m. The deadline to apply is Friday, Jan. 29, 2016 at 4 p.m. Applications received after the deadline will not be included in the random selection process and will be placed on the school’s waitlist.

The FI school for our area is Plum Tree Park Public School. The phone number is 905-824-0155 at Plum Tree Park Public School.

Enrolment cap and random selection process As there is a grade 1 FI enrolment cap in place, there are a limited number of spots available for students entering the program. The cap is set at 25 per cent of all Peel students enrolled in grade 1.

Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served basis. A random selection process system is used to identify students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program.

All students who apply by the deadline will be assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist. Each school has its own waitlist.
