Principals Message

January has been a another busy and successful month at Shaw Public School. Our

Grade 6, 7 and 8 students have enjoyed participating in our new Poetry and Spoken word club and our Sign Language Group. Students have also been active in the CIA Club,

the Interact Club and the ECO/ Recycling Club. Our busy Intramural sports schedule

(Pinball, Steal the Treasure, Floor Hockey, Flickerball & Dodgeball) has continued to keep students active through their recesses supporting our Healthy Schools commitment. Our

school sports teams have been actively preparing for badminton and basketball tournaments and the upcoming Exhibition game against Mountain Ash Public School.

Mindful of the importance of the Arts, many of our students have also had the

opportunity to participate in the Grade 7 & 8 Art club, the Grade 3-8 choir, the Bollywood & Bhangra Dance Club, and our incredible school band. Many of our Grade three

students have been actively attending OFIP Tutoring to strengthen their math skills in preparation for this year’s EQAO Provincial Testing. As always, staff and students at

Shaw have continued to work together to earn spirit points with the yellow team taking the lead for the month of January!

February brings forth with it many special events such as Black History Month,

Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year-the most important day in the Chinese calendar, and Valentine’s Day with a variety of fun activities that will teach us all about the history and

customs of these special days. Together, as a school community we understand that the beauty of the world lies in the diversity of its people.

Students in Grades 6, 7 and 8 are looking forward to a special Valentines Dance on

February 13th, 2017. This month also sees the launch of pizza days. Keep watching for news of our next Pizza Day sign up on Cash Online. Students must be registered online

to participate in pizza days. Our first “Live: Pizza Day for students who have paid is Friday, February 3rd. Funds from the pizza day will help to subsidize Shaw’s sports teams

expenditures. Students, staff and families are looking forward to our upcoming family movie night.

On February 17th, Shaw Public School is closed to students for our Professional Learning

Day. The school will be closed to staff and students on February 20th for “Family Day”. We wish all families a safe and healthy Family Day.

Our teachers and DECE’s have been very busy preparing the Communication of Learning Report for our Kindergarten students and the Term 1 Report Cards for students in

Grades 1 to Grade 8. Our education teams have worked diligently in establishing report

cards that focus on three areas: What students are learning (Content), establishing where they are in their learning (Strengths) and identifying strategies which will enable

them to improve their overall skills (Next Steps). Current research tells us it is important to focus on how families and schools can work together to improve outcomes for students. When parents and families are involved in their children’s

schools, the children achieve greater academic, social/ emotional and overall levels of school success. As we work

together to provide a positive learning experience for your child/ children, we encourage you to review the Communica-tion of Learning (Kindergarten) and/ or the Report Card together as a family in order to set new learning goals to sup-

port ongoing success in Term 2. First Term reports will be sent home February 8th, 2017. If your teacher feels an inter-view is necessary an interview request will come home with the report.

Although it is barely the New Year, we will soon begin to register our students for the 2017-2018 school year. We look forward to welcoming new registrations at Shaw Public School on February 6, 7 and 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m as

well as, February 9th 9:00-3:00 p.m. and 5-8 p.m.

Shaw Public School puts the spotlight on Black

Heritage

In December 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month,

following a motion introduced by the first black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honourable

Jean Augustine.

During Black History Month, students, staff and parents from across Peel will participate in a number of activities that promote the understanding of the many contributions made by black Canadians. Here is a list of events

happening at Shaw Public School.

Morning announcements will highlight Black history

African Drum and Dance presentation from Lougheed Middle School. They will preform a variety of traditional

west African pieces as well as some original, more contemporary rhythms.

Some of our students will be attending “ Spotlight on Black Heritage” at the board office, where they will

participate in interactive workshops that focus on the experiences of African-Canadians who have overcome great

obstacles to make important contributions to our country.

This Month in Shaw Athletics …

December and January saw the emergence of Shaw's Co-ed Badminton team and the Boys and Girls Basketball teams.

Under coaches Ms. Ganong and Mrs. Carson the Shaw Badminton team practised during early mornings and after school

learning a variety of skills and strategies. The group of 8 boys and 8 girls prepared throughout December and January

for their divisional tournament at Jean Augustine SS on January 30th. The Shaw Hawks represented Shaw well playing a

number of close games. The doubles team of Zahra and Lovleen played especially well progressing to the semi-finals.

The Badminton team members are commended for their efforts. Are you looking to take learn/play the lifelong sport of

The Shaw Boys and Girls Basketball teams have also been working hard and developing strategies and skills. Both teams

are getting ready for their first exhibition game to be held on February 2nd in the Shaw gym as they welcome the Moun-

tain Ash Mustangs. Girls coaches Ms. Thomas and Ms. Asomaning and Boys coaches Mr. Partynski and Mr. Yan look for-

ward to playing some other local schools in exhibition action as they prepare for their divisional tournaments in late Feb-

ruary.

In intramural action the grade 1's and 2's continue to build their sending and receiving skills during their Pinball games.

The grade 3's continue to have their fun and competitive juices flowing in the strategic Steal the Treasure games. The

grade 4/5 intramural floor hockey regular season is just wrapping up and sees the Bruins leading Division A and the .

The grade 6 dodgeball intramurals are just about to move into the playoffs with the first semi-final game seeing the first

place Divers taking on the 4th place Duckers and the following week the 2nd place Dodgers will play the 3rd place Dip-

pers. Good luck to both teams. Finally, the newly-popular Flickerball intramurals has seen great action from both the

boys and girls. The grade 7/8 intramural also moves into the playoffs with the first place Bengals taking on the 4th place

Browns and in the other semi-final, the 2nd place Steelers will play the 3rd place Ravens. Are you looking for a way to

Excitement from the EcoTeam!

Congratulations to Mrs. Arora’s class for winning the Golden Recycling Bin award for the month of January. Way to go

Ms Ganong’s class for winning the Golden Lamp award for the month of January. And finally - three cheers to Mrs.

Parmar-Goorah’s Kindergarten class for receiving the Golden Lunchbox award for the month of January!

We wish to remind parents of our ‘Waste Free Wednesdays’ that began just before the holiday break. On Wednesdays,

we are asking that students are sent to school with re-useable containers to hold all of their snacks and their lunch.

‘Waste Free Wednesdays’ highlights the importance of how using re-usable containers reduces waste and ultimately contributes to a cleaner, healthier environment. Student lunch garbage is sent home on Wednesdays – as we close the

class garbage cans to highlight the importance of reducing waste.

Participating in ‘Waste Free Wednesdays’ allows our students to feel the importance of being a part of the school’s EcoTeam and the global community at large. Please help us to support this initiative on Wednesdays this year. Your

help is greatly appreciated.

Shaw’s School Yard Greening project is underway! The Region of Peel, together with our student representatives are being the mapping out of our yard in early February! Applications have been put forth for resources to fund our yard

changes.

The Breakfast Club At Shaw

From Monday to Friday, Shaw staff volunteers operate a ‘breakfast club’. Starting at 8:30 a.m., students may gather in

the multi-purpose room to enjoy breakfast.

Students coming to the breakfast club are asked to donate a quarter (25 cents) a day for their meal! Shaw students

develop pride in their school by knowing they are donating to a great cause.

So come join us for breakfast! If your child has any food allergies, please contact the office with this information.

Health and Physical Education Curriculum supports the physical,

emotional and social well-being of students

Working together to keep our students safe and healthy

The Peel District School Board implemented the Ministry of Education’s revised Health and Physical Education (HPE)

curriculum in the 2015-16 school year. The curriculum is divided into four elements that work together to support the

physical, emotional and social well-being of students:

active living

movement competence

living skills

healthy living

Peel staff will again teach the human development and sexual health component to students, beginning spring 2017.

This provides time for teachers to develop strong relationships with their students prior to this phase.

Advance notice letters will be sent home with students two weeks prior to the human development/sexual health l

lessons. Families can submit religious accommodation requests at any time prior to the lesson by contacting the school

directly.

Offence Declaration required for returning volunteers

Parents play an important role in the development and education of their children and in the success of the school

community. At Shaw P.S., we welcome and encourage the participation of parents and community members, and are

grateful for the countless hours our volunteers contribute throughout the school year.

To volunteer at our school, you must complete a short interview and a criminal record check. A criminal record check is

required for all school volunteers in Ontario. Even if you want to accompany your child on a field trip, you need this record check.

Once you have completed the process, you are on file with the Peel District School Board as being a school volunteer. All returning volunteers will receive an Offence Declaration form that must be filled out and returned to the board office

each year. Completing the Offence Declaration will ensure that you can continue volunteering in the next school year.

Expect to receive the form in February.

Traffic safety in our community

Safety is a top priority at our school. Here is a list of traffic tips to keep students, staff and parents safe while

commuting to and from school.

Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school.

Drive slowly and with caution on and near school property. Adhere to the posted speed limits on any surrounding

streets used by students on their way to and from school.

Always yield to pedestrian traffic. Wait for students, staff members and parents to cross before driving past them.

When dropping your child off at the school, use the Kiss'n'Ride area. This is a supervised area that is designed to

keep students safe.

Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic or draw your child off the curb and into traffic. Do not take

shortcuts over curbs.

Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the curb. Say goodbye to your child before you park at the

curb to let your child out of your car.

During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the car until it is safe for them to exit the car onto the curb.

Follow the directions of staff or volunteers on duty in the school parking lot and treat staff, students, volunteers,

passengers and other drivers with respect.

Consider parking off site and walking a short distance to school. This will give you time to talk to your children about

their day, review new vocabulary words, math concepts, etc.

Remind your child to only cross the street at an intersection or crosswalk. They should never “jaywalk” by crossing

in the middle of the street.

Students who bike to school should always wear a helmet, and follow all traffic laws. They should only cross the street at a crosswalk or intersection—never in the middle of the road.

What you need to know about head lice

What is head lice?

Head lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp where they lay their eggs. They have three stages: the egg (nit), the nymph and the adult. Head lice do not spread diseases and cannot be spread between animals or pets and humans,

only through direct contact between people.

Head lice spread easily, especially where people are in close contact. They are very common among school-aged chil-

dren or children attending child care, where they spread through direct hair-to-hair contact or directly by sharing things like hats, combs, hairbrushes or headphones.

One of the first signs of head lice is an itchy scalp. However, children can have head lice for several weeks with no

symptoms. If you think your child has head lice, check their hair for nits right away, then again after one week and after

two weeks.

What to do if your child has lice

Parents are advised to keep their child at home until they have been treated for lice. Students may only return to school if they are “nit-free.” If your child has live lice, ensure that they avoid head-to-head contact with other children until the

lice are gone. Children should not share combs, hairbrushes, caps, hats or hair ornaments. You should also check all

family members for head lice. Be sensitive to your child’s feelings and let them know that having head lice does not mean they are not clean.

Head lice can be treated with the following approved insecticides:

pyrethrin (found in R&C Shampoo + Conditioner)

permethrin (Nix Creme Rinse or Kwellada-P Creme Rinse)

lindane (Hexit Shampoo or PMS-Lindane Shampoo).

Do you know an adult that is interested in improving their English language skills for work, study or daily life?

Through the Continuing & Adult Education department, the Peel District School Board offers a wide variety of English

language classes that help parents experience success in Canadian English in both listening/speaking and reading/

writing. Courses are designed for a range of basic, intermediate and advanced English (Levels 1 to 7) as well as the

more experienced learner needing to prepare for an IELTS exam.

Winter courses begin February 6, 2017.

All learners that complete a session will earn a certificate of learning from the Peel District School Board.

Classes operate from six locations in Brampton and Mississauga with three specially designed adult centres at:
