Vice Presidents Report

Winter Building Season??

I stopped by Hobby Haven the other day. It wasn’t real busy. I got to visit with Gary for a few minutes. He mentioned that this used to be the busiest time of the year. It was building season! Not anymore. Now most everyone just buys their airplanes ready to go. Am I one of the last builders? Building is in full swing at my shop. However…. building has changed a lot for me. I remember the days when the building season produced one airplane at the most. Building an airplane (even from a nice lazer cut kit took months). Those lazer cut kits are almost none existent now, but in reality there has never been a better time to build. New modern methods of kit building and scratch building have been developed in just the last few years. It is now possible to build a great flying, great looking airplane in only a few evenings using these new methods. It is easy to see the value in the incredible new ready built models. (I own a few) however, if you are like me, something is missing. I think it is the fact that I had little to do with the success or failure of the airplane. Or maybe it is the fact that a thousand other modelers are flying exactly the same airplane I have? I need a little more skin in the game personally. To see a one of a kind model that I built from nothing take flight is tremendously gratifying to me. If you remember that feeling from years ago, but just can’t justify spending all winter building a project that might be destroyed on the first flight, mark your calendar to attend the first club meeting of 2020 on Thursday January 5. We will take some time to discuss Flite Test and why it has become such a big deal in our

hobby. Plus we will have some hands on demonstrations of basic Flite Test building methods. A word of caution. Flite Test can become VERY addictive. However, its a great addiction. It can get you back into building and it won’t break the bank building from one dollar sheets of foam board. Hope to see you there for this fun and informative meeting!! Mike Bare, Vice President

Safety Officer It’s near the end of the year and the days suitable for flying are getting to be fewer and fewer. Looking back at how things went safety wise I don’t think we did to bad. I can only think of two incidents which is really two to many and both were a momentary loss of concentration. Both times it was proof that propellers are not very forgiving. I would like everybody to think about what they are doing while starting an engine. Where is your transmitter laying, your starter, and your starter battery. Can you comfortably reach your transmitter? Is the throttle at or near idle? Are your glow driver and starter leads clear of the prop? Are these leads clear of your throttle stick so they don’t advance the throttle accidentally? Once you put a glow driver on the glow plug never put your hand in the propeller arc. If you need to back the propeller off of compression do it with your starter or chicken stick or anything except your fingers in case it fires. Be aware of where you and others are in case the engine backfires and throws off the prop and spinner. There is also the possibility that the prop can have a blade break off. After the engine starts try to resist the urge reach past the spinning propeller to remove the glow driver. If you must reach past the propeller to remove the glow driver reach really high going past and coming back past. I have seen people reach well above the spinning prop to remove the glow driver and then pulling their hand almost straight back nearly dragging their hand thru the prop. It’s much better to move behind the propeller arc to remove the glow driver and adjusting the needle.

When I am training people to land I stress over and over to not try to salvage a bad approach. Power back up and go around and set up your approach again. Trying to salvage a bad approach almost never works out to be a good landing. I need to remember that advice myself. A few days ago I started a loop while practicing the IMAC maneuvers and ended up flying over the pitts. I started the maneuver to close to the flight line and my wings weren’t level. The plane was inverted and getting closer to the flight line so I tried to push it back out with the rudder. I know that when the plane is inverted I give the wrong rudder command about 75 percent of the time. Instead of gently giving it right rudder to make sure I was giving it the correct command I gave it full left rudder. It only took a fraction of a second to pass over my head and as I turned I was staring directly into the sun. When I was able to make out my airplane I rolled out and flew it back to where it belonged. I could and should have aborted that maneuver at any point starting with being too close to the flight line. I should have gone around and started the maneuver farther away from the flight line. There were three different times that I should have aborted that maneuver before it was ever close to going over the pits. I promise I will remember my own advice the next time. I am not saying I will never have a plane over the pits again but it won’t be because of multiple mistakes. Have a safe month and year. Merry Christmas

Steve Steve Milam, Safety Officer
