From humble beginnings as a fledgling seven-team league on the Western Canadian prairies in 1966 to the largest junior hockey league of its kind in the world today, no one would have envisioned the growth the Western Hockey League has experienced over the last 50 years.

The WHL has certainly come a long way and this is in large part due to the commitment WHL Club ownership has made in setting the standard for player development on a worldwide basis. The WHL and our 22 member Clubs take great pride in providing an ideal environment for the top prospects in the system to reach their potential both on and off the ice. From our world class coaching and arena facilities, to our comprehensive player safety and professional development initiatives and our fully guaranteed player education and scholarship program, the WHL is a leader in every category.

As we celebrate our 50th season, we not only salute our founders – Scotty Munro, Bill Hunter, Del Wilson and Jim Piggott – but also our owners and community leaders who, together with long-time WHL President Ed Chynoweth, have been instrumental in the establishment and growth of our League. We also want to pay tribute to the players, coaches, managers and staff, along with the officials, who over the past 50 years have made this League what it is today. None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our fans, sponsors, broadcasters and media from throughout the League. Without your loyal support, WHL Clubs would not be in a position to continue offering our players the world class experience they deserve.

We trust you will join us in celebrating the WHL’s 50th Season as we prepare to host a series of special events throughout the 2015-16 season including the Canada – Russia Series in November in Kelowna and Kamloops, the CHL / NHL Top Prospects Game in January in Vancouver and the MasterCard Memorial Cup in May in Red Deer.

A Welcome from the President

Welcome back to another exciting year of Kootenay ICE Hockey. The 2015-2016 season brings winds of change to our Hockey Club with an entirely new coaching staff and a roster turnover that we have not experienced in years.

Despite the high turnover and cyclical nature of Major Junior Hockey our organization expects to make the playoffs every year and this year is no different. Thanks in part to the quality scouting and coaching we have made the playoffs all 17 years we have been in Cranbrook, all while finishing with a .500 or better record for a WHL record 16th consecutive seasons (both are the longest active streaks in the WHL).

Our organization has been very fortunate since moving to Cranbrook to enjoy an unparalleled amount of on-ice success. This year’s team will be the youngest in franchise history, but our expectations for success both on and off the ice will not change. Our fans have come to expect a team that is hard working on the ice and ambassadors for Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay region off the ice.

On behalf of the entire organization, welcome back and I hope you enjoy the game.

TONIGHT’S OPPONENTLAST OUTING: The Hitmen last played eight days ago when they dropped a 7-5 home ice decision to Medicine Hat. The Tigers, who trailed 4-2 early in the second period, rallied to beat Calgary for the second time in three tries this season. Cole Sanford and Max Gerlach both scored a pair of goals while Nick Schneider stopped 25 of 26 shots in a relief appearance to pick up the win. Jordy Stallard led the Hitmen with three assists. The Hitmen, at 46 points, are tied for second in the WHL’s Central Division with the Red Deer Rebels, two points back of the division and Eastern Conference leading Lethbridge Hurricanes. LAST MEETING: Today is the fourth of seven regular season meetings between the two teams. Calgary leads the season series 3-0 outscoring the ICE by a combined 11-2. Eighteen different Hitmen have a least a point against Kootenay this season with Radel Fazleev (1g, 3a) and Loch Morrison (1g, 3a) leading the way with four points each. Not counting the post season, over the last five seasons Calgary is 18-15-1-2 against the ICE including a 7-9-1-0 record in Cranbrook
