PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

I am sitting in the quiet of my office silently reflect-ing on the immense and incredible gift of what just happened. We have just finished celebrating

Thanksgiving Mass. This is often one of my favorite celebrations of the year because people who come really want to be there. The music is often beautiful, uplifting and grand. People crowd the pews often with family who have come in from college or across the nation to share the holiday. I get to see some folks that I haven’t seen in months or even years. It is easy to be filled with gratitude.

Yet this year, it was so very different and yet the same: Jesus Christ—yesterday, today and forever.

Though we could not sing, sit close to one another, hug one another and linger with one another; though I felt a certain sense of sadness and longing, I am still filled with gratitude and thanksgiving. I know there were folks who joined us on livestream. I know folks wanted to be there yet couldn’t. I know that so many who—because of age, health conditions, family situ-ations, etc.—want to come, share and celebrate Mass and are unable to do so and long to receive Holy Communion. I know the longing in their hearts and for this I am so very thankful. I know that we are together, united in prayer and most of all in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

I wish it was other than it is. I wish that people would be safer than they are. I wish we already had a vaccine that was proven effective without long-term side effects. I wish people were not suffering so terribly. I wish that doctors, nurses, first responders, healthcare workers and caregivers were not feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. I wish that children were back in school, sitting at their desks close to one another, playing outside at recess and sharing lunch together. I wish it was other than it is.

Yet, this is our present reality. How are we handling it? What is helping us? Who is there for us? How are we there for others? How are we finding hope and experiencing joy?If I did not have faith; if I did not believe in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Sacraments; if I did not believe in the Church that Jesus Christ founded for us, I have no idea how I would get through. Yet, because of my faith, which is total gift and given to me by my parents, my family and so many others during my life, I have hope. I am blessed. I discover God’s presence over and over again in the very midst of the challenges that I/we face.I cannot urge you enough during this Advent season to unplug in order to really plug into what God is offering to us.Change what you are doing these next three weeks of Advent. Have more silence at home. Have more time for prayer individually and as a family. Have more time to listen to sacred music. Have more time to be with one another and for one another. Have more dis-cussions about how you can help others, share what you have for those in need and talk about ways to share your faith and with whom.Allow this Advent season to not merely be a time of preparation for Christmas. Rather, see it as a time of preparation for eternity, for the hope of the second coming of Jesus Christ, for a life lived fully as a disci-

ple of Jesus Christ so that one day you might share with him and all the saints and angels in heaven where there will be no more suffering or pain, tears or sadness, as sacred Scripture says. May this Advent season truly be like none other. In Christ, through the interces-sion of Blessed Pier Giorgio, I love you.

THE OFFERING OF THE BREADFR. LOU CUNNINGHAM

Sometimes the gifts are presented directly from a group of Christ’s Faithful, the Laity. They are brought from the sacristy to the steps of the sanctuary, received either by the deacon or in the absence of the deacon the priest himself. This is not a necessary aspect of the offertory, but is a helpful reminder about what we talked about last week: that this is not supposed to be intermission! As the priest takes the bread, he often lifts up the paten (a small flat circular disk that one or more hosts rests on). As he offers this, it gives us the opportunity to place ourselves on the paten and offer ourselves to the Father. In different rites of liturgical worship, there are different prayers that accompany this offering, and I want to highlight them below.

FROM THE EXTRAORDINARY FORM:Accept, O holy Father, almighty and eter-nal God, this unspotted host, which I, Your unworthy servant, offer to You, my living and true God, for my innumerable sins, offenses, and negligences, and for all here present: as also for all faithful Christians, both living and dead, that it may avail both me and them for salvation unto life everlasting. Amen.FROM THE RITE OF MILANAccept, most clement Father, this holy Bread, that it may become for us the Body of Your Only-begotten Son, in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.FROM THE SYRO-MALABAR RITELet us send up praise to the Glorious Trinity. May Christ, our True God, Who was sacri-ficed for our salva-tion and who commanded us to make a perpetual memorial of His death and resurrection, received this sacrifice to His Honor and Glory, now and ever unto ages of ages. Amen. What shall I render unto the Lord, for all the Lord has rendered unto me? I shall take the Cup of Salvation and call upon the Name of the Lord Our God! Receive O Holy Trinity, this offering which I present unto Thee, in memory of the Blessed Passion, Death, Resur-rection and Ascension of Our Lord and Savior.

Grant that it might ascend worthily in Thy sight and may bring about my eternal salva-tion and that of all Thy + Faithful people.Blessed art thou, O Lord Our God, King of the Universe, who hath given us this bread, fruit of the earth and the work of human hands, that shall become for us the Bread of Life.FROM THE ASSYRIAN RITELet us send up praise to Thy glorious Trinity at all times for ever. May Christ, Who was sacrificed for our salvation and Who com-manded us to make a commemoration of His death and burial and resurrection, accept this sacrifice at our hands by His grace and mercy for ever. Amen.By Thy command, our Lord and our God [thrice], these glorious, holy, lifegiving and divine mysteries are placed and ordered on the absolving altar, until the coming of our Lord the second time from heaven, to Whom be glory at all times for ever. Amen.

I place all of these here to show the breadth and depth of this action. In the Roman Rite, we are accustomed to very concise actions. There is little explanation about what is going on! Reflecting on these hopefully allows us to understand the what of this action, and how Jesus desires us to see ourselves placed on that bread being offered so that we might learn what it means when “taking part in the Eucharistic sacrifice, which is the fount and apex of the whole Christian life, they [Christ’s Faithful] offer the Divine Victim to God, and offer themselves along with It. Thus both by reason of the offering and through Holy Communion all take part in this liturgical service, not indeed, all in the same way but each in that way which is proper to himself.” (Lumen Gentium, 11)

FAITHRAISING CAMPAIGN

IN REVIEWWe would like to thank everyone for their contributions to this Faithraising Campaign—most importantly Fr. Jim, whose vision started this journey in 2017. Several parishioners served on the Campaign Cabinet with endless time, energy and prayer. In April of 2018, the downtown church was closed for reno-vation, and a different Mass schedule was started at the West-side Chapel and in the school gym. We all got to see different members of our parish as we mixed and mingled the times we attended Mass. Over the next several months, pledges and contributions to the campaign grew. The renovation was completed in 2018. On November 5, 2018, we held the Dedication Mass with Archbishop Sartain presiding. What a truly blessed night! Since that time, we have all enjoyed the fruits of our contri-butions: A beautifully renovated worship space, complete with a new audiovisual system that now allows us to livestream Masses; new storage facilities that allow our shelter ministry to have easy access to their supplies; and the renovated kitchen and bathrooms serve us well during Masses and special events. Those are just a few of the many changes and upgrades that this campaign has financed. We would like to extend our profound gratitude to all who have contributed in any way: financially, with prayer, and with their time— serving on the initial campaign teams, on our own follow-up team, doing the update announcements at the various Masses, and assisting with the yearly celebrations we have held during the campaign. Saint Michael Parish is truly blessed with generous disciples of Christ! We especially want to thank Fr. Jim and our parochial vicars, Fr. Cody and Fr. Lou, who have guided and supported us spiritually along the way.Our final update for contributions total $4,068,530, which is only $181,470 away from our pledged amount of $4.25 mil-lion. We will continue to accept donations via the pink enve-lopes as debt reduction contributions. Once again, thank you for your support throughout these past three years. It has been an honor serving you. We feel that the Holy Spirit has guided each of us along the way. Though we can’t all be together to celebrate, we are asking you all, at some point, to raise a glass and toast a successful campaign. To all of you and to Saint Michael Parish, thank you. Fr. Jim, we DID make His house beautiful!!Tom and Jill MurphyFaithraising Campaign Follow-Up Team Managers

A note from Fr. Jim:

It is with both sadness and gratitude that I inform you that Ann Ashe, our Steward for Faith Formation, will be leaving on December 5, 2020 and assuming a new position as Assis-tant Administrator at Pope John Paul II High School. She is well suited for this very important task. Although we will miss her greatly and the many gifts she brings to the parish, I'm grateful that Pope John Paul II High School will have such a fine new person for their team.

After many years of shepherding Categchesis of the Good Shepherd, Mary Trotter will be retiring in December. Mary has helped us to grow and develop CGS as a foundational catechetical tool for passing on the faith. Her deep love for the CGS methodology has enabled us and many parishes throughout the archdiocese to grow this program. I am deeply grateful for her love of our children and for her efforts these past years. We have been truly blessed by her presence.

Please keep the entire Faith Formation team in your prayers as we look to the future. We look for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to direct us in our next steps.

SHOULDER TO SHOULDERPARISHIONERS HELPING PARISHIONERS

How many times have we heard Fr. Jim marvel at the generosity of Saint Michael parishioners? We are blessed to be a family of families who truly care about one another. That spirit of generos-ity is clearly demonstrated in the Shoulder to Shoulder ministry, which works through a special fund set up to help parishioners who are struggling financially.Parishioners who find themselves in a financial crisis simply com-plete a confidential application, which is then screened by a com-mittee of parishioners who, in turn, make a funding recommen-dation to Fr. Jim. If approved, the parish issues a check directly to the service provider–the doctor, landlord or roof repair company, etc.– not the applicant.Applications are available on the parish website and are held in strict confidence.Questions about applying for Shoulder to Shoulder help?Call Chris Peterson, Parish Administrator at (360) 754-4667.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRYTHE LADIES OF THE YARN

COVID restrictions have not hindered the work of the Prayer Shawl Ministry! During the summer, we were blessed to be able to meet in the park with our masks and camp chairs. Otherwise we have been connecting virtually. There is no requirement to attend the meetings. You can still participate from home. Just contact Mary Orazem at (707) 599-5820 to get the details. We were able to gather to have our shawls blessed recently. There are now over 100 shawls of every color at the office. People have chosen prayer shawls for themselves or to give to others. There are many reasons including comfort, healing, gratitude and thanksgiving. Just call the parish office and make an appointment to come by and choose one.

I am not going out much at all until the virus starts heading down significantly and stays there. NOW—praise God—it appears we all have a reasonable light at the end of the tunnel with the promising news on therapeutics as well as the vaccines, so it seems only fair to medical personnel and my neighbors if I do my part by keeping out of the way for a few months. I don’t need to be eating up medical resources or health care personnel time & efforts while the virus rages. So, I will continue to lay low and Jim is doing mostly the same if only to protect me. He is wonderful like that and darn fine company to me. Thank you for continually reaching out and offering opportunities to serve all of us, while also trying to see that the most vulnerable in our area are also served by us and SMP. I believe God is blessing the earth and God’s people in all of this, though the path is difficult. I am so proud of St. Mike’s for continuing to offer shelter to the homeless, even when we are closed to in-person services. That is a tremendous witness of fidelity to the gospel, even when sacrifice is called for. I pray for all of you and & the SMP ministries with the Angelus three times a day—either alone, online, or with Jim. God bless you and Christ’s peace in all things.Dee & Jim

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CLOTHING BANKThere are less shelter beds available in our community at this time and many are sheltering in place. Thanks for adjusting the donations to fit our current need for distribution to folks on the streets and in encampments. The St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Bank has gone mobile! We rent a U-Haul and drive to the various encampments to distribute clothing. Access to laundry services is limited. Items in high demand are warm zipper hoodies, underwear, socks, Jeans (size 30, 32, 34), warm sweatpants, blankets and sleeping bags. Please consider donating clean items on Saturdays, 9am–1pm.

MEN'S SHELTEROur men's shelter is underway. Thanks for all of your support and accommodation so we could continue this very needed service in our community. Our guests thank you for a nice warm, dry, and safe space to be in overnight—out of the cold and rain. Thanks for all our volunteers who serve as overnight and lead hosts, chefs, and laundry angels. We have made many changes to keep every-one as safe as possible. Please keep our guests and volunteers in your prayers. We still need overnight hosts!

THURSTON COUNTY FOOD BANKThe need is still great in our community. Donations of food and money can be delivered directly to the Thurston County Food Bank, NOT the parish. Drop off your donations Monday–Friday 8am–4:30pm at: 220 Thurston Ave. NE, Olympia, WA 98501.

In lieu of actual gifts, we are giving out gift cards. Last year during the Christmas season, SMP was able to provide gifts for more than 500 individuals in need in our local commu-nity. As a result of the pandemic, many have had a difficult time and are struggling. The need is greater this year. We would like to make an effort to let our community know that we have not forgotten them. Our hope is to gather around 600 gift cards. We appreciate gift cards from Walmart, Target, Amazon or Fred Meyer in $25 or $50 increments. They can be dropped off or mailed to the parish office by December 14 with the label Christ-mas Giving. Many thanks for your generosity! And, if you're buying gift cards, why not consider using the Scrip program that returns a portion of gift card amounts to Saint Michael Parish School! Buy them online via our web-site or directly via Pushpay. Just login to your online giving accout and select Chrsitmas Giving Tree as the fund.

ADVENT SMALL GROUPS WEEK 5: THERE WHO STANDS AMONG YOU, UNKNOWN TO YOU, THE ONE WHO IS COMING AFTER ME.

This week Fr. Josh Johnson from Ascension Press reflects on preparing the road for Christ. He shares how things are not going as planned for him this Advent and he has fears that he is having difficulty facing. However, he encourages us that no matter how fearful, alone, or unprepared we are feeling this Advent season, that Christ is always there for us. As we prepare for His coming we can reflect and pray on how Christ is sufficient and God is enough. Christ can wash away our worries and concerns, squelch our fears, and grant us peace when we remember these words:

Christ is sufficient and God is enough.Fr. Josh encourages us to make space for God in prayer. Through prayer we can remain anchored in God and His Word. All groups are now meeting via Zoom due to the new COVID-19 restrictions.
