DECEMBER 2019
Dear Parents and Guardians:
The month of December has been quite busy for the Booker Middle Learning Community. It is
my pleasure to thank you for your commitment to helping us create and maintain an orderly, trusting, and
caring environment where teaching and learning are exciting and students are assisted as they develop
responsibility. We have rallied together to build upon our school’s organization, curricular and VPA
programs and activities. These activities are not only child centered, but allow our students to dream.
The ability to dream is one of the greatest gifts we can give our scholars. I’ve learned throughout
my career that the ability to see your hope is the greatest motivator of humanity. Without hope, life has no
positive future, and one might find it difficult to dream. As we shift into the year 2020, let us reflect upon
what we can do to help our scholars develop a dream. And more-so what can we do to help them dream
BIG? I believe our scholars are destined to be Tomorrow’s Leaders and we as parents and educators have
a responsibility to ensure that we inspire them to move toward that dream.
The year 2020 is not just an ordinary year, but it’s the beginning of a new decade. A new year is
an opportunity to refocus our goals and expectations, particularly, if they were not fulfilled in the prior
year. Our hope at Booker Middle School is that we will help our scholars to realize their potential. What
is the difference between the dreamer who realizes their dream and the dreamer who only hopes but does
not fulfill their dream? The dreamer who succeeds is someone who is focused, has clear vision and acts
on it. As long as we can encourage our scholars to hold on to vision, stay focused and accomplish their
goals, then there is always a chance their dream will manifest. In this new year, let us remind our scholars
to walk in expectation, take advantage of opportunities and follow the wisdom and instructions of those
that have gone before them.
Best wishes for an amazing 2020!
Sincerely,
Dr. LaShawn Frost, Principal

Stocking Delivery at BMS "I love when you all visit this time of year. It's my favorite," - Student
at Booker Middle School.
We loved hearing that over and over as police officers and volunteers
joined Dee Webber and the Brothers and Sisters Doing the Right
Thing program to hand out more than 800 stockings filled with
candy to students at Booker Middle School. What a fun and festive
treat for our students?!
Parent University was a great success and we had a huge turnout.
Thank you to Child Protective Services for presenting on Teens
and Social Media! It was so interesting and informative.

Students Attend and Study “The Sound of Music
On December 4th BMS VPA students took a field trip to see the Asolo
Rep performance of “The Sound of Music.” The students loved the
show, and then two weeks late Asolo Rep was in residence with the
theatre and chorus students as they wrestled with the concepts of
neutrality and power in relation to the production they watched of
“The Sound of Music”.

UTC Mall on Dec 15th in front of Saks Fifth Avenue! It added
wonderful holiday cheer for all the shoppers!

Launch Your Learning This month our campus was bustling with students from
Emma E. Booker, Gocio, and Tuttle visiting BMS to learn
about all our incredible arts programs and participate in fun
filled arts workshops. Everyone had a great time and so many
participants came for student evaluations on Dec. 14th hoping
to nab a spot in the VPA program next year!
2019 BMS STEM Fair Congratulations to the Booker Middle School 2019
STEM Fair participants! On Wednesday December 4th, we had
twenty-two sixth and seventh grade students participate in the
school wide STEM Fair. First place: Alejandra Peguero, Second
Place: Peter Ashley, Third Place: Dexter Day. Honorable
Mention (will represent BMS along with winners at the district
fair in January): Aubrey Ard, Gabriella Huff, Sergio Gonzalez,
Lilia Burgess, Stefany Rangel, Lila Saarinen, Javari Mitchell,
Kyle Ramon, and Jazlyn Mathis
Algebra in Motion Mrs. Mills and Ms. Dwulit engaged Algebra students in an arts
integrated lesson using substitution to solve systems of equations.
Students used motion to represent terms, operators and symbols in
equations and used their arms and positions in the equation to represent
combing like terms and substitution. They were even parenthesis to
represent the ordered pair solution in the end. The students had a lot of
fun and were happy to have an opportunity to move around during
class!
Inaugural BMS Chalk Festival
On a Saturday in November Booker Middle students and students
from elementary schools across the county came onto the Booker
Middle campus for the 1st Annual Chalk Festival. It was a wonderful
time for all who participated and we are excited to watch this event
grow in the future!

Dragonflies Visit PINC The Dragonfly Café’s “typewriter poets” had the
unique opportunity of bringing their talents to the 6th
annual PINC conference, celebrating creativity and
innovation. The students did a wonderful job as
always under the guidance of Ms. Fox.
SWAT Celebrates the Holidays! Our BMS "Students Working Against Tobacco" group walked
in the North Port Poinsettia Parade. All students showed up on
time, in their t-shirts, ready for community outreach! They
handed out SWAT beads and candy canes, and their messaging
was through many signs carried in the parade. We received
compliments on them being "good kids" and we agree! Very
proud of them. (BMS students made up half of the county
group!).

and playing the gpa/admissions game!! What a fun day !! Go Bulls
💚🤘🏻
To Shake or Not To Shake Miss Thomas’ SCIENCE we did a fun investigation. First,
students wrote a hypothesis statement comparing physical and
chemical weathering. Then they physically weathered limestone
by shaking the rocks in plastic containers rapidly for 30 seconds.
Meanwhile, the teacher was chemically weathering limestone using
a hydrochloric acid solution. After each trial, the rocks were
weighed and data recorded. At the end, it was determined which
method weathered limestone more quickly. They were encouraged
to use vocabulary such as abrasion and corrosive. Students
reflected on their experiment through writing and class discussion.
