Christmas Band Concert

The Central Lake Bands played marvelously at their latest band concert on December 10. The show was great,

with the High School band kicking it off with The Heaven’s are Telling. After the high school band played, Ms.

Aungst introduced the Sixth Grade Band as they showed off their pieces. After they played snippets such as Mary

Had a Little Lamb, along with some other tunes. The Sixth Grade Band then invited the H.S. Band to play Jingle

Bells with them. After that the M.S. Band took the 6th grade’s spot as they played Winter Wonderland, A Canter-

bury Christmas, and Stille Stille Stille. The H.S Band then finished the concert with pieces such as, Medieval

Christmas, Cartoon Christmas ( Frosty the Snowman, Charlie Brown, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer), and fi-

nally topped it off with a Christmas concert tradition by playing Silent Night with the lights off and Christmas

lights around the stands. All in all it was a tremendously fantastic concert.

New Trojan Mascot

The new Trojan mascot is in, thanks to Channing Hoogerhyde. Now a senior at

Central Lake, Channing raised the funds to make the purchase possible over the

course of four years.

She was inspired as a freshman after travelling with her volleyball team to state

finals, where one of the competing schools had a mascot of their own. She de-

scribed how you could feel the pride of their school radiating from their mascot,

and wanted that feeling to belong to her school as well.

Her goal was to raise $4,300 for the purchase, but ended up passing her goal by

$900!! She raised the money through two wood raffles, as well as business spon-

sorships from the surrounding community.

“It took me four years to reach my goal because I gave up on the dream sopho-

more and junior year. Just goes to prove that when you don’t give up, good things

can happen!”

She isn’t certain who the “Trojan Man” is going to be yet, but there will criteria

for any individuals who are interested.

Great job, Channing! It proves that anybody can make a difference and the

school will thank you for years to come. Go Trojans!

Christmases Around the

World

Across the world, Christmas is celebrated in a

variety of different ways. All of these ways are

widely different from each other, and very differ-

ent. First, are American Christmases, which we

are all very familiar with. Most families decorate

their homes with elaborate lighting, and entire cit-

ies decorate in this fashion as well. Also, many

families decorate Christmas trees, and put pre-

sents underneath of them. Many children believe

in Santa Claus, who delivers

Next, are French Christmases. France cele-

brates Christmas a little different than the United

States. In France, a Nativity crib is a common

decoration, similar to our Nativity scenes in

America. Also, children in France have both a

good and bad Santa Claus, with the evil Santa vis-

iting the bad children’s homes. In France, trees

are decorated and presents are given, which is

very similar to American traditions.

Finally are Australian Christmases. Australian

Christmases are similar to American Christmases,

with caroling, and wreath hanging, but one dis-

tinctive difference lies in the food. In America,

ham or turkey is usually eaten, but in Australia,

seafood is a primary food choice for the holiday.

Across the world, many different customs are

practiced for Christmas.

The Changing of the Gifts

The gifts over a 100 year span have really

changed. In the early 1900s some of the main gifts

included Ice skates, chocolate, and the classic

glass bottle of coca cola, which back then was on-

ly 5¢, if only it was like that today. As the years

progressed gifts started to improve and that really

started to change Christmas around the world. In

1970, superhero action figures and the slinky be-

came prominent, along with the “pet rock” which

was pretty entertaining in the 70s and it was the

gifts every kid wanted that year for Christmas.

Fast forward to the 90s, Power Rangers, Game

Boy, Nintendo 64, and the Sega Genesis were all

well known gifts around the holiday season. A lit-

tle known fact that when the Nintendo 64 came

out, it sold a million copies in the first Christmas.

In 2005 kids wanted things such as Razor scooter,

Bratz dolls, Beyblades, and the new system that

came out that year, the Xbox 360. This year the

gifts have really changed, people want the most

popular gift of the year, the Hoverboard 360

Smart Balance Board. This ridiculous board has

been sold at a tremendous rate this year already

and it’s on everyone's Christmas list this year. So

in conclusion the gifts over a 100 year span has

really changed in dramatic fashion.

Christmas Charities Christmas is right around the corner! This is

the time of year when you put your Christmas tree

up with all of the colorful string lights and orna-

ments, shop for gifts, hang your stockings above

the fireplace, make snowmen outside, have hot

cocoa on cold nights, listen to wonderful Christ-

mas music over and over again, and finally, open

up presents on Christmas Day! You also spend

time with family and friends.

When people think of Christmas, they think of

giving and sharing. Parents want to get gifts for

their kids, but sometimes they can’t afford to, so

children are not able to have a Christmas. That is

why people do Christmas charities and organiza-

tions nationwide.

Here are a couple of them…

Make-A-Wish Foundation

Angel Tree Program

Page 3: Central Lake December 2015 Tr jan Timez - Weebly

CL Trojan Timez: December 2015 Issue [email protected] page 3

Make-A-Wish Foundation is a non-profit

Christmas organization. Their mission is to ar-

range experiences described as “wishes” to chil-

dren with life-threatening medical conditions. In

the United States, and its territories, on average, a

wish is granted every 37 minutes. That is very

cool.

Angel Tree is a program that provides new

clothing or toys for children of needy families

through the support of donors.

During the application process, the clothing

sizes and special needs of the children are deter-

mined and written on the application and is then

transferred to paper “angels” along with the

child’s first name, age and gender.

Christmas programs, organizations, and foun-

dations are great to have! Merry Christmas!

Art Spotlight

The spotlight shine on Brooklyn Allen this

month. After a week of working with clay she

came up with this creepy skull that doubles as

a paint brush holder. While she usually is

found doodling anime characters, she took

this opportunity to do something new. Her

next project is going to be trying to create a

paper dress out of recycled books!

Trojan Sportz Girls’ Basketball Season

Begins

The girls’ basketball season is off to a good start

this year. Their first game was against East Jordan,

where EJ won 45:41 and the game was put into over-

time. Junior Cybil Ritchie scored 18

points, and Senior Delaney Buffman

scored 10. The girls’ second game was

against Ellsworth, and we kicked their

butts with a score of 48:29. Cybil Ritch-

ie scored 14 points, Senior Channing

Hoogerhyde scored 12, and Delaney

Buffman scored 10. Both games were

non-conference games.

Their third game was against Inland

Lakes, where Inland Lakes won with 49

to our 39. Channing Hoogerhyde and Junior Tori Guy

scored 9 points, and Delaney Buffman scored 8. Their

fourth game was against Pellston, and we won again

with 50:42. Channing Hoogerhyde scored 22 points

with 15 rebounds, Tori Guy scored 9 points, and

Delaney Buffman scored 6 points with 15 rebounds.

Both games were conference games.

This year, we’re really counting on the leadership

of Erika Thayer, Channing Hoogerhyde, and Delaney

Buffman. There’s been some very good improvement

in the girls, and the team is selfless and plays well to-

gether, but if we’re going to compete for the league

championship, we’re going to need to work on re-

bounding and making easy open shots.

Trojan Boys Slay Ellsworth It was all high fives in the locker room after the

game Tuesday night against one of their rivalries, Ells-

worth. Central Lake opened up their season with a

substantial win of 56-39 always leading Ellsworth at

least 6 or more points the entire game. After inter-

viewing some of the players, they said it was a great

game to be a part of, as it was an intense game and an

important game for Central Lake. Senior, Isaac

Mortensen led the team with 24 points on the night,

following him was Junior, Edward Boh with 15 points

against Ellsworth on Tuesday. The atmosphere was

great for the game as there were fans on

both sides cheering on their team that

night. With this win it will give a confi-

dence boost to Central Lake as they pro-

gress as it's always great starting the sea-

son 1-0.

Skiing report The skiing team has been doing a lot

of practicing and running. They are also a co-op

team. The schools they join are Elk Rapids, Traverse

City Saint Francis, and Grand Traverse Academy.

There has been no snow yet. Every Tuesdays and

Thursdays they go up to Mt. Holiday to do lots of

training. Some of the training includes running, leg

workouts, and just for fun, some games.

There are a couple of freshman joining their team

this year, and also some returning skiers. The people

who are on the skiing team are, Matilda Perkins, Mad-

die Daniels, Ben Hicks, and Gavin Mortensen. They

all love going skiing.

They hope to have some snowfall by January sixth,

because that is their first racing date. We hope you

guys have a great and fun year!

Worldquest Update

The Central Lake High School World Quest team

has four new member this year: Brooklyn Allen, Kyle

Russell, Sara Dorland, and Darren Zook. This group

has been meeting for a few months now on Mondays,

and Thursdays. They have been reading and studying

up on current events that have been happening

throughout the world. They will be attending an Aca-

demic Worldquest Competition on February 11th in

Traverse City at the Hagerty Center. They have

worked very hard, and we wish them the best of luck

at their competition.

Window Night Goes Perfectly

Window night this year was held on December 2nd

from 5-8:00. While it shared the date of the girls’ first

game of the season, there was still quite a turn out.

Santa was taking gift requests at the Blue Pelican, and

there was hay-rides and rounds in the fire trucks avail-

able (it was supeerrrrrrr awesome hearing those sirens

go by my house every 3 minutes) for kids of all ages.

One of our teacher’s, Mrs. Yost, was at Adam Mad-

am’s doing a book signing, where cookies and refresh-

ments were available, and Touch of Class was giving

out hot cocoa as well. However there was no snow to

be seen, it looks like we may not have a white Christ-

mas this year folks. (Pictures by Sarah Shluckbier)

Aries (March 21 - April 19): You may find the month ahead to be a struggle. People may be constantly “sniping” you on Snapchat. One of

your girlfriends post a picture, that you simply look ratchet in. Just remember to keep doing you and keep the

haters at bay.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20):

You may find yourself subject to a lot of criticism this month. Whether from teachers or fellow classmates,

don’t allow your self-esteem to drop. Some people are easily irritated and it may be best to fly on their radar

for a bit.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20):

Live life to the fullest! In the days ahead take all the opportunities presented to you. Whether they seem disin-

teresting, they may open you up to an experience that you would not have had otherwise.

Cancer (June 21 - July 22):

This month focus on you. What is something that you’ve done before? Do it! Life is way too for “what ifs”.

This is the only chance you have! Make yourself happy and leave behind those who hinder that happiness.

Leo (July 23 - August 22):

This month Leo’s should work on destressing their lives. Everyone knows somebody who’s hold-

ing them back emotionally. If you don’t feel comfortable being yourself around them without feeling judged,

then maybe it’s time to distance yourself from that situation. If you have any school work that you’ve been

putting off for far too long now, sit yourself down and get it done. Your life will be so much better with things

that are easily dealt with off your mind.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22):

Bow-chicka-wow-wow!! Time for Virgo’s to fall in loveeeeee. That cutie that lives next door has an eye on

you too, time to make a move.

Page 11: Central Lake December 2015 Tr jan Timez - Weebly

CL Trojan Timez: December 2015 Issue [email protected] page 11

Libra (September 23 -

October 22): You may find yourself with a hip

surgery of late. Take this opportuni-

ty to see if the doctors snuck in any

sweet power boosts. Can you leap

buildings in a single bound? Move

your hips like Shakira? Time to

find out!

Scorpio (October 23 -

November 21): You are looking at an adventurous

month ahead! If you come across

the opportunity to enter a mysteri-

ous cave or car then do it! A ques-

tionable person asks you to follow

them? Tell them to lead the way!

Lost in the woods? Sweet! Take the

opportunity to explore the outdoors.

Take chances and see where they

take you.

Sagittarius (November

22 - December 21): If you want to take a break from

grand achievements and return to

your slow-paced life, you can't

choose a better time than now. Go

back to your daily routine where

you will feel safe among the famil-

iar-ness.

Capricorn (December

22 - January 19):

Time is flying by you. Take a deep

breath and slow down, take in your

surroundings and live in the mo-

ment. Take time to spend with

friends and enjoy yourself. Don’t

let yourself get bummed out, keep

busy and do what makes you hap-

py.

Aquarius (January 20 -

February 18):

You may find yourself craving

some munchies. You’ll constantly

turn to people and state “I’m hun-

gry.” What do you expect them to

do? Pull a cheeseburger out of their

pocket? Well let me tell you this

girlfriend, people are not made of

food (unless you’re into cannibal-

ism) and maybe you should eat be-

fore coming to school!

Pisces (February 19 -

March 20):

Congratulations! You have the

coolest horoscope sign out there!

Good job being born Feb.19th-

March 20th.
