KROTOA: Eva van de KaapThe story of Krotoa: Eva van de Kaap is relevant in contemporary South Africa as it brings to the stage a neglected and contested aspect of shared history in a way that is innovative. The work sheds new light on an ancient story – a story that has not yet ended. It connects the dots between what happened at a 17th century fort and what is still happening in our modern society, which compels the audience to understand their past, make sense of the present and be better prepared for the future.

Krotoa: Eva van de Kaap is a multilingual, perspective-changing, intercultural, and musical tribute to a shared history. Krotoa, who became a key negotiator and translator between the Dutch and the local people at a very young age, was battered by the clash of two cultures. She became the fi rst Khoe woman to be baptised, and the fi rst to offi cially marry a European.

Join the musicians and actors from South Africa and The Netherlands, as they endeavour to fi nish the story that started three and a half centuries ago.
