Our Savior’s Shared Journey

“It’s All About The Advent”

“Time is a

fascinating

thing.”

Time is a fascinating thing. On the one hand, our human experience of

it is technically measured and on the other hand totally subjective. We

can measure the passage and cycles of it to nano-seconds and yet feel

as if this day will never end. Humans easily get distracted by the history of

the last few days as if that is all that matters (as I write this, the devastation

of the massive earthquake on the Iran-Iraq border two days ago is gone

from the headlines) while the planet responds to realities that measure

beyond centuries.

The end of the Church’s “liturgical” year and beginning of the new

with Advent brings us face-to-face with another “timeliness” that Jesus

brings to our hearts. We were reminded in November’s Bible Lessons on

Sundays that God and time have an unmeasurable relationship. We

heard God invite us into that “timelessness” in prophesy and poetry. We

heard Jesus urge us not to get worried about “when.” Advent, the weeks

that lead us up to the annual celebration of Incarnation (where God got

a little more involved in our earthly times), takes us deeper into the realiza-

tions and contemplations of God at work in eternity and now.

The word “advent” means “the coming or arrival, especially of some-

thing awaited or momentous” (The American Heritage Dictionary, 1975).

In the Church, that has gotten associated with “expectation” and

“anticipation.” The themes on the banners that adorn Our Savior’s sanctu-

ary for the season lead through a progression of “Watch,” “Prepare,”

“Rejoice,” and “Behold.” We get to watch time unfold, preparing our

hearts with memories of past celebrations and anticipation of future re-

joicing as we behold the truth taking shape in our world in the form of Je-

sus. It is an acknowledgement of time past, meld-

ed with time present and rooted in endless time.

We get to be aware of “Kairos,” God’s time,

breaking through our pre-conceived notions of

the meaning of our days and hours to lead us to

the Cradle & Cross shaped, grace and faith pow-

ered peace that defies human expression.

We get to share that journey

of time with each other!

Pastor Chris

Mission Appeal

Rejoice Renew Reach

THANK YOU!! Thank you to all who have responded with pledges and commit-ments to both the Mission Appeal and Our Savior's annual campaign.! As of November 15th 82 pledges have been received for the Mission Appeal for a total commitment of $ 194,911. Your gifts will support continuing care for Our Sav-iors' members of all ages as well as facilities maintenance that provides the base of your mission of "Knowing Christ and Having Others Know Him". If you have not yet pledged, please prayerfully consider how you might participate. Pledges will continue to be welcomed until the goal is met. Mission Appeal funds, to fulfill those pledges, are greatly welcomed any time from now until the end of the three years campaign.

For the annual operating budget 95 pledges have been received for a total of $176,902. The typical base annual budget for Our Savior's is approximately $260,000. When members were contacted for the last directory we had approximately 480 families (approximately 900 individuals) indicate that they considered Our Savior's to be their church home. This is your very large church family! Providing support for this large family requires staff, heat , electricity, insurance, office supplies etc. Our Savior's is blessed to have this community impact, but we also then have a responsibility toward these families. Historically of those 480 member families, about half are active in financial support for your church family. Sus-taining members who give on a regular schedule allow for consistency in your church's daily operations. Annual pledges help the church's volunteer leadership plan for the next year. Thank you to all who have made pledges to your church's 2018 annual budget. If you have not yet pledged, please prayerfully consider doing so for these annual needs as well as for the 3-year Mission Appeal Campaign. Your church is indeed blessed, REJOICE in those many blessings. Thank you.

Lake Venoah Christmas Donation Our couple’s Bible study group is reaching out into the community with a donation to the Lake Venoah facility. Located just east of Chub Lake, Lake Venoah is a board and lodging facility in existence since 1958 that provides 24 hour supervision for men who have chemical dependency and/or mental illness and is licensed to provide special services. It offers a safe, sup-portive environment for men who have experienced numerous failures in acquiring and maintaining a stable lifestyle. The approach at Lake Venoah is to provide a low stress, home-like environment as key to bringing about long term behavior change. Currently 42 men call Lake Venoah home. If you would like to donate we are looking for toiletries (no mouthwash or other items containing alcohol), men’s clothing in large and extra-large sizes; men’s shoes, used items (especially winter coats, mittens, gloves, warm hats, boots, etc.), new items (especially socks and underwear), quilts or blankets. If you prefer, a cash donation will be accepted and we will purchase items for you. We can also pick up items. For pick up or additional information call Bob and Peggy DeCaigny at 879-2471.

Thank you to all the volunteers that made our Lutefisk Salmon Meatball Dinner a success. Thanks to Sue and Scott Johnson, Chef’s Marketplace Catering; Roy Ober, for the potatoes; and Annette Kiehn. It couldn’t have been done without all the help.

We are in desperate need of Bell Ringers at Walmart and to some extent our other locations of L&M and Super One. But Walmart is our most pressing need. If people are interested in ringing bells they can call the office during the day at 879-1693 or in the evenings they can call David at 879-1693. The majority of our Social Services budget comes from the money raised through our kettle campaign and we will fall short of the needs of this community if we don't get a lot more bell ringers at Walmart and our other locations. We will start ringing bells on November 24th (Black Friday) and go un-til December 23rd. We ring from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and can sign people up for shifts ranging from 1 hour to a whole day if they have a group or club that would like to ring. Since Deer hunting will be done and their isn't enough ice to go out fishing yet or snow to ski or snowmobile people can put their cold weather gear to good use and ring bells for us out-side at Walmart. Our other need is some volunteers to help in our food shelf. Some of our main volunteers have become snow birds and have left for the winter and we need some people to help out in our food shelf on Tuesdays especially in the afternoon from 1:30 - 2:30 but also on other days of the week to help sort and date check items that are donated. If they are interested they can call David at 879-1693.

Christmas Bake Sale The Fellowship Team is sponsoring a sale of homemade baked goods, including Christmas cookies and other assorted items, after both services on Sunday December 10

th. All funds raised

will be used for future fellowship events at Our Savior’s. If you are baking for the holidays why not make some extra cookies, breads, candies or other assorted homemade items and donate them to the bake sale? We are looking for other cooks beside the Fellowship Team to join in. Call Jan Larson at 878-1281 or email Jan at [email protected] if you are able to donate any goods. Drop off your donations at the church kitchen on Friday December 8

th between 9am and noon or

between 8am and10 am on Saturday December 9 th. Then plan to be in church on Sunday December 10

th and stock

up on homemade goodies for the holidays. The Fellowship Team

Thank you for your recent gift of $877 to the student account fund of Christina Kadelbach. Your generosity in helping to prepare new leaders for the church and for trusting Wartburg to provide this leadership. Your gift makes a difference. Thanks to you and many other supporters, WTS is stepping forth boldly to face the growing need for church leaders.

Blast Off for Books Campaign

2018 National Youth Gathering In Houston. Texas

Book collection will run until June 15th, 2018

Building a foundation of literacy starts before entering Kindergarten. Students who read at home become strong writers, critical thinkers, and more successful students than those who do not. Houston Independent School District estimates that 74% of the students in the district come from families who struggle to provide books for their children. This means the students begin each school year at a disadvantage. In joining the Gathering's Blast Off for Books campaign, you will help ensure bright futures for Houston’s students. The books you donate will be distributed at community book fairs, camps and other events around the city as part of the Gathering’s Service Learning experience. By putting books in the hand’s of Houston’s economically disadvantaged students, you can help change lives.

New Horizons Christian Preschool The sounds of Christmas are being heard through-out the church. Our children are very excited about the upcoming birth of Jesus. They are practicing for their program on the 21st of December at 6:30 PM. Every-one is invited to attend. We enjoyed watching our church family as they prepared all the traditional cook-ies for the Nordic Bazaar. We were so glad we could be their official taste testers. Each treat was their favor-ite!!

We wish you a MERRY CHRISTMAS! And we will see you in the NEW YEAR!

Greetings from the Preschool, Our Butter Braid fundraiser was a wonderful suc-cess! Thank you again to everyone that ordered. In November, we brought down three truck loads of Shiny Paper to Verso in Duluth. It was our biggest load yet! Thank you to everyone that saves and donates the paper to the Preschool. Please keep on saving! Thank you to everyone who purchased a poin-settia through the Preschool. They look so beautiful in the Sanctuary. Whenever I see a poinsettia, I am reminded about what God did for us. He sent His only Son to earth for us. What a wonderful gift! Our Preschool Christmas Program is Thursday, December 21st, at 6:30. We would love if you would join us in celebrating Jesus' birth. I wish all of you a wonderful Christmas and Hap-py New Year. God is so good! • 3 recent deaths of members whose funerals we have not been involved with (we’ve made contact and offered our services/building/condolences/prayers); please keep families in your prayers: Gordon Doble, Dwayne Johnson, Grace Caffey.

• From Pastor’s perspective, the Affirmation of Baptism/Confirmation service on the 15th was awesome!

• Pastor has been recruited to accompany the Zion/OSLC group to the National Youth Gathering in Houston in 2018; attended 2/3rds of the “adult leaders” training on Sunday; your church’s Youth ministry is awesome!

• All Saints; Memorial Candles or Baptismal Water Remembrance

• Worship schedule will be modified, moving the 1st Sunday of Advent to Nov. 26; Christmas Eve is Sunday, WAM is planning normal Christmas Eve schedule for that day (afternoon/evening services only). Emerging Opportunities: 100th Anniversary of the “fire” next year Other Updates: Zion’s new Interim Pastor is in place since Oct. 1: Loren Anderson-Bauer. Ongoing Conversations: Keep these people in your Prayers: Karen Splett, Mike Knoll, and Mary Krohn Christian Education Christian Education, along with confirmands, presented 5 youth with study bibles to: Stephanie Connor, Eagan Harker, Hadley Carlson, Nathan Hamilton and Annastyn Hagen. Pastor Chris trained 5 new acolytes in October! Thank you to those who have attending a Sunday School day. We do feel and appreciate your support. You can find recaps and resources on the website. No Sunday School on October 23, 2017. The Reformation Party is the follow ing week (Oct. 29). Christmas Program practice will be starting next month and we sincerely hope to have partici- pants and volunteers of all ages and abilities to be a part of it. The more that get involved the more engaging and exciting for all. Church Properties Will be taking care of fall maintenance like bringing in the air conditioner Deacons No report Evangelism We have three new members: Katie and Jerry Nisula & Keith Matzdorf. Since Katie and Jerry are out of the area from November – March, we would still love one more member. It would be great to find a member who attends first service as majority are from 2nd. We are meeting in early November to discuss plans for advertising (Christmas and/or Easter services). Fellowship The Fellowship Team will be setting up the display for Operation Christmas Child this week. Shoe boxes are due back in the church office by Sunday Nov 12. We will be making arrangements with the Cloquet Salvation Army for the Giving Tree which will go up in the narthex the week of Thanksgiving. Stewardship No meeting in October, but this group has met with MALT. Pray that MALT inspires future leadership in stewardship.

Youth Ministry On Saturday October 14, 2017, under Pastor Karen and Christina’s guidance, youth visited and served communion to four shut-in members. Christina is looking forward to seeing this ministry grow. Worship, Arts and Music We are glad the Holy Hootenanners were able to make it! They would like to return for more service worships. WAM will look at having them visit in the summer. Tom Cawcutt is back to playing. Liz is back for Wednesday music. Wireless headset will replace the broken one for Reformation Sunday. Two people have moved away and are no longer part of the Gifts & Memorial committee. Organ will be tuned soon! WELCA Nordic Bazaar is coming up on November 18, 2017. Will replace the metal tables in the Sunday School rooms with plastic tables that are more lightweight tables. Old dishes will be sent to Deerwood that helps families set-up house holds and are figuring out how best to transport these. NHCP Katie Gustafson has joined as a new board member and secretary of the NHCP board. A donation of $1,000.00 was made towards the MALT campaign. This month shiny paper will be delivered to New Page. And NHCP still has a Facebook page to use to update members of upcoming events like: Ladies Night Out that is coming up on Novem- ber 21, 2017. Old Business:

• Mission Appeal Update: Good Leadership o Low turn-out for small group meetings, but have personally reached out to some of those who planned to attend, but were unable to at the time o will call to personally invite members of the church to Commitment Sunday o Financial goals updated as per recommendations by PPC o Outside Charity components adopted as per recommendations by PPC

• AED purchase for the Church o Need two AEDs in Church, due to large and well-used space; cost estimate of $700.00 for one unit with subsidy New Business:

• Annual Meeting Date: January 28, 2017

• Parking lot discussion regarding snow removal o Need to clarify where to put snow pile, so as not to overlap with Grace parking lot o Looking to get Bids for snow removal to save expenses

• Annual Budget Planning

• Budget Season coming up! o Team Leaders will receive budgets in mail soon Treasurer’s Report We had a better month for revenues as offering was about $1200 short of budget but rent, including ISD 94 came in $500 over plan. Net was revenue $700 short of plan for September. Expenses, led by the $2000 budgeted but not spent on an annual boiler servicing, were $1400 less than expected. Combine the two and we came out $700 AHEAD of plan for once! Small in the grand scheme of things, but AHEAD for once! Bruce also had a request to use $1000 of the Lutefisk Fundraiser monies to support the Mission Appeal administrative expense. That now makes $1700 from chili, $1000 from NHCP, and $1000 from Lutefisk to help with Appeal expenses. Next PPC meeting to on November 21st, 2017 at 7:00 pm Closing Lord’s Prayer

Please remember to call the office if you would like to schedule a meeting in the church so we may put it in the church calendar. Thank you.

Radio Broadcast Sponsorship

The calendar for the 2017 radio broadcast sponsorship is up near the Fireside room. When signing up for a date, remember to pay the office. The rate for a sponsorship is $52.50. In order to keep this service, we need more spon-sors. Thank you!

SIMPLY GIVING For those of you who use Simply Giving for your offering, there are pink cards available in the pews for you to use. How it works: To show your sup-port of using Simply Giving, place the card in the offering plate. It’s that easy. This gives other members a visual and reminder of the Simply Giving program. If you are not enrolled in Simply Giving, and would like to be, there are forms in the office, in the Narthex, and on our Church website. www.oursaviorscloquet.org

OUR SAVIORS CUPS FOR SALE Cups with the new Our Saviors logo are available for sale for $10 in the Fair Trade Store. Some have told us

that $10 is a bit expensive; however, the cups cost almost $6 to make, and this is a fundraiser.

Thank you to all who purchase cups! The Evangelism Team

Are you interested in receiving the Messenger via email and not the postal service?

Call Connie in the office at 879-1535 and give her your preferred email address. This option saves Our Savior’s

paper, printing, and postage costs!

Please contact the church office when you or a loved one are hospitalized or when a death occurs so we can support and care for you or your loved one.

Seminary support for Christina Some have asked how to financially support Christina in

her studies at the seminary. The church has a designated ac-count set up for this. A donation can be made to Our Savior’s

with a note on the memo line or on the envelope requesting that it go to Christina’s seminary expenses. Your support

will be greatly appreciated.

I am working on a new website for Our Savior’s, and need your help. I am in need of general pictures of people around the church. Horizontal pictures work best. So if you have a camera and can get some “general” pictures to me, I would be so ap-preciative. You can email them to the office. [email protected]. Thank you so much. Connie

If you do not wish to use the regular coffee cups when serving coffee, there are paper

cups in the metal cabinet in the kitchen. Be Kind To The Environment.
