Members in the News There is a truly one-of-a-kind program that is marking its 37th anniversary of teaching Pennsylvania high school stu-dents (juniors and seniors) to both understand and cele-brate why “free enterprise” is vital to the American way of life. Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW), in-ternationally-acclaimed for its excellence, will host more than 2,200 students this coming summer in its exciting seven-day journey into the world of business. Participants will act the parts of senior management in modern-day companies that will face the same challenges that all American firms do and particularly those in Pennsylvania.

Each summer, PFEW holds five, one-week individ-ual sessions in July and August. The focus of the week is to group the participants (strangers at first) into “management teams” of senior executives who have inherited imaginary “companies.” These teams, under the guiding hands of “executives-on-

loan,” called Company Advisors, operate their firms for a computer-simulated three-year period of time. Each day’s activities include presentations from world-class business people from a list that reads like who’s who in Pennsyl-vania. The students hear about: Business and Finance, the Role and Relationship of Business and Government, Taxa-tion, Business Ethics, Labor Relations, and much, much more. With our economy still “recovering” from one of the longest recessions in our history, teaching young people to under-stand and cherish our private enterprise system has never been more important. The Chamber is proud to support PFEW to give our local students this eye-opening experi-ence. We encourage our local companies and civic organi-zations to provide sponsorships for our students and, if possible, volunteers for the sessions. (PFEW is completely a product of the private sector.) Every student attends PFEW on a fully tax-deductible $575 scholarship (the ac-tual value of the scholarship exceeds $1,500) which is pro-vided by a local firm. Each student wears the name of their sponsor throughout the week and also corresponds with his or her sponsor following graduation to report on what they learned. PFEW is also an approved organization through the PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program through the Department of Community and Economic Development.

Secretary of Aging, Brian Duke, was the honored guest speaker during Open House festivities at Pocono Tran-quil Gardens on October 15. The event attracted over 170 guests and residents. Local dignitaries in attendance included State Representative Rosemary Brown, Pocono Medical President and CEO, Jeff Snyder, and Patricia Fretz, executive director for the Monroe County Area Agency on Aging among others.

Secretary Duke addressed the Open House attendees and commended Pocono Tranquil Gardens for our cutting edge work in the area of cognitive therapy and for our notice-able success since his visit last year. During his visit, Sec-retary Duke spent time with several of the facility’s mem-ory care family members listening to their stories and their emotional and financial struggles as their lives have been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease. Before leaving, Secretary Duke met with Pocono Tranquil Garden owners, management staff and Representative Brown to discuss funding avenues and the need to work towards developing protocols and bridging the financial gap between assisted living/personal care services and skilled nursing care, the importance of treatment and quality of life opportunities for all those suffering with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, as well recognition of the positive effects that are provided in all levels of care. Pocono Tranquil Gardens opened in January 2013 offering personal care accommodations and services. Later that year, services were expanded to include two new Memory Care Units and an Adult Day Care Program - the only one of its kind in Monroe County. Both programs are overseen by Jennifer Bayer, who holds dual certifications in thera-peutic recreation and as a dementia practitioner. Resi-dents and clients in both service areas receive regular cog-nitive therapy that involves daily mind stimulating exer-cises.

Pocono Tranquil Gardens personal care community is lo-cated on East Brown Street and is owned and managed by local area physicians who specialize in dementia. For more information or to schedule a visit, please call 570-426-4000 or visit their website at www.poconotranquilgardens.com. Michael J. Frailey is principal agent of Frailey Insur-ance and Financial Services. He has an office in the Stroudsburg area, located at 1286 North Ninth Street. He has a staff of 4 part-time and 6 full-time employees and sales associates. This is the first year he has quali-fied for the company’s Presidents Award. It’s that time of year once again. It’s a time to give back to the community which is part of Frailey Insurance and Financial Services’ mission. Starting Saturday, Novem-ber 1, the public, members, friends and family can support the Christmas tree project, Angels for Aging. The event is being coordinated by the Frailey team at their office lo-cated at 1286 North Ninth Street, Rt. 611, Stroudsburg. “This is our third year supporting Monroe County Area Agency on Aging. By engaging in this project, we are en-hancing the quality of life of some Monroe County senior citizens age 60 and older. We are doing this by picking a name off the tree and fulfilling their two wishes. We then wrap the gifts, attach their name, and place them under the tree. Gifts will be picked up on Wednesday, December 10, 2014. It’s always a pleasure making a difference in the lives of others. I encourage anyone who is interested to come in and pick a name from our tree,” says Sandy E. Haley, project coordinator and Member Protection Sales Associate. “Many of the seniors that we serve have outlived their families, and are also low income. The thoughtful gifts given by Frailey Insurance and Financial Services are sometimes the only holiday cheer that these individuals receive during the holidays. It makes such a huge differ-ence!” states Gretchen Peters, Access Services Coordina-tor, Monroe County Area Agency on Aging. If you would like more information about our Angels for Aging project, you may contact Frailey Insurance and Fi-nancial Services at 570 421-7447.

Last winter, many PPL Electric Utilities customers on variable-rate plans for their generation supply faced high bills, resulting from a combination of high usage during the prolonged cold weather and volatile market prices. Fall is a traditionally a time to prepare for the long, cold months ahead. Before the cold of winter and heating bills hit, there’s also no better time to take steps to keep your electric bill low. PPL Electric Utilities suggests a three-step plan to help customers avoid paying more than they have to for elec-tricity: Use energy wisely: PPL Electric Utilities has many tips on its website at www.pplelectric.com. They include turn-ing the thermostat down, if you can. Heating accounts for more than 30 percent of an average home’s energy bill. Turning the thermostat down about 1 degree saves about 2 percent on your heating bill, while turning it down 5 de-grees saves about 10 percent. Also, seal your house against drafts, and have your ductwork checked for air leaks. Shop for electricity: Shopping for everything from gro-ceries to gasoline is part of almost every family’s routine. So why not shop for electricity, too? The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission has a website that makes shop-ping easy: www.PAPowerSwitch.com. Shop smart: Customers have two choices when they shop for their electricity -- fixed rate and variable rate. If you have a variable rate, it means the price you pay per kilo-watt-hour can change anytime, based on factors like weather and market conditions. A fixed-rate plan offers pricing stability for a defined period of time. There are many fixed-rate offers below PPL Electric Utilities’ price to compare — the rate PPL Electric Utilities charges custom-ers who don’t shop. Even if you’re already on a fixed-rate plan, it’s a good idea to check the terms and expiration date of your supply agreement. Sometimes fixed-rate plans automatically shift to variable-rate plans when they expire. As with any purchase you make, it’s always good to double-check what you’re buying, and know the terms of your energy contract and the price you’ll pay this winter. No matter where you buy your electricity, it will still be delivered safely and reliably by PPL Electric Utilities.
