The Perfect Game by Steve Felege

hello To bowlInG: Part IIGood morning. Last week you said you were interested in learning to bowl. If that’s true, there’s only one reason you’re here; you

want to be good at it! Well, like anything, there is a right way and a wrong way to go about it. I’m going to teach you the right way.Being a bowler is similar to being an athlete in any other sport. You need to carve out a little piece of your life and dedicate it to

this. Becoming a winner requires that. There are strategies to learn, skills to master, and trust to develop between you and me. That’s a challenge. If you won’t do that, I can’t help you. Now, are you ready to begin?

Lesson #1: Bowling is more than just throwing a heavy ball at some pins. The first step toward becoming a good bowler is to act like one! That means getting your head straight. Every time you enter a

bowling center, pretend there’s a box waiting for you at the door. When you walk through that door, mentally put your ego, attitude, issues and any other distractions in that box. You want to leave here better than when you arrived, and those four demons prevent that. That means no cell phones, music, video games or anything that keeps you from focusing on learning to bowl.

The second step is to develop confidence. Confidence comes from competence. Competence results from practice. Practice de-velops experience and muscle memory. I know you probably think of practice as work, and the last thing I want is for you to think of practice as a chore. Bowling is fun; practicing should be too! I’ll talk more about that later.

Now it’s time to learn a little bit about this game. The basic concept is simple:- You’ll bowl three games each time we meet. - There are ten frames in each game. - There are ten pins in each frame. The pin closest to you is called the head pin. It is the #1 pin. There’s three rows of pins behind

it numbered left to right and front to back: 2-3, 4-5-6, 7-8-9-10.- Your job is to knock them all down using something called a bowling ball.- You are allowed to deliver that ball twice each frame; as many as 3 times in the last frame.- You win by scoring higher than your opponent. DUH! But that doesn’t necessarily mean Two things will make you a better bowler: experience and knowledge. Obviously you lack both, but knowledge is more important

because it enhances what you experience. Bowlers who know what they’re doing are the ones everyone wants on their team. Got that? Good! Let’s move on.

A bowling alley consists of two parts; the “approach” and the “lane”. The approach is about fifteen feet long. It’s where you per-form. The lane is where you see the results of your performance. The two areas are separated by a thin line called, the “foul line”. During the delivery of your ball, you may not cross that line FOR ANY REASON! Doing so is a foul and the pins knocked down by your shot will not count. That hurts your score.

The lane is sixty feet long from the foul line to the center of the head pin. There are channels on each side of it called “gutters.” The gutters are there to trap your ball so it can’t knock any pins down. That hurts your score.

So how do we keep the ball from going into a gutter? That’s easy! I’m going to teach you four very simple skills that will make the ball go exactly where you want. You need to learn and practice them. But before I teach them to you, I want to tell you four little secrets that will help you understand why those skills are so important.

secret #1: Bowling is a game of accuracy, not power! The pins fall very easily, but only if something hits them. A skilled bowler is capable of delivering a ball which does exactly that.

secret #2: You don’t win by knocking down more pins than your opponent. You win by delivering more “marks.” What’s a mark? Good question! A mark is an X or a slash (/) on your score sheet. An X indicates that you knocked down all ten pins with the first ball. That’s referred to as a “strike.” It scores 10 plus bonus (total pins felled by the next two shots).

A slash means you knocked down all ten pins but needed two shots to do so. That’s called a “spare.” A spare also scores 10 plus bonus (pins downed by the next shot only). Those bonus pins create the scores needed to win. Using the four skills, you will create many more marks than you will if you don’t use them.

secret #3: You don’t have to be at a bowling center to practice bowling. Of the four skills you need to learn, three can be practiced at home. Practicing at home, in private, will develop the focus and muscle memory that will enable you to deliver one effective shot after another. That will help your scores (and your pocketbook). Games that involve pitching things like beanbags or horseshoes will help develop your bowling skills. Remember, I said practice should be fun.

secret #4: There is a targeting system built into the lanes. It was put there to help others beat you. If you don’t want to be beaten, you need to learn how to use it, too. It’s the hardest thing to learn because it requires discipline. It’s always tempting to look at the pins when you bowl, but that’s what separates winners from losers. Remember, I said there’s a right way and a wrong way to bowl. LOOKING AT THE PINS IS THE WRONG WAY!

I know what you’re thinking! Does it really make any difference where I look? It really does. It’s psychological. When you look at a big target sixty feet away, your brain thinks you must heave the ball sixty feet. The ball is too heavy for anyone to do that. Looking at a small target that’s only fifteen feet away shifts your thinking from power to accuracy.

You’re skeptical? Of course you are. At first, everyone is. Tell you what, take two buckets. Put one fifteen feet away and the other sixty feet away. Take some rolled-up socks or bean-bags and try to pitch them into the buckets. If you are more accurate pitching the bags into the bucket sixty feet away, you are an extremely rare individual.

I’ll teach you how to use the targets later. For now, you just need to know that they exist and you must use them! The four skills enable you to pick one and roll the ball over it again and again.

I think that’s enough for you to digest this week. See you next week.Comments or questions? Email them to us at: [email protected]

Manny is the horse win-ner at $83 and now advanced to the Title game to meet Hi Qualifier Louis Bachus. Here we go again.

In a high scoring title game both bowlers bowled very well. Strikes were often but Manny pulled away with a big 4 bagger enroute to the title 262- 222 with Handicap.

Louis is married to Maria and they have one son Cam-eron! He hails from Rancho Cucamonga and used a Track Hex drilled by Chris Hagin.

Nemesio Tagalag, a True Gentleman is from Carson and used a Taboo drilled by Bach Bowling Suppy. He is single and is found at most every event with his good pal Steady Freddy Zamora.

It’s December. Already! This is when we all ask our-selves and each other “How can that be? Where did the year go?” I know where most of mine went...bowling! I bowled 10 tournaments, approximately 450 games in league play and floored 3 youth sessions. League fees, side pots and brackets. I refuse to add up the cost. I keep waiting for the Bowlers Intervention Team to show up but so far I’ve been able to fly under the radar. I know I’m not alone. You’re reading this article!

We BIMBOs (Believers in Must-Bowl-Often) have to stick together. So ‘fess up and testify. Proudly wear your ‘Split Happens’ shirts! Flash your bowling pin jewelry! Give the gift of bowling for Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa! Gift certificates are available at the desk and in the Pro shop. Advertisement over. Sigh. ABAKUMOFF HITS 234-781 IN SO-CAL DEAF TRAVEL AT CAL BOWLLAKEWOOD — With absences of Southern California Deaf Traveling League’s top two av-

erage bowlers in the travel League’s stop at Cal Bowl, no one hit a 800 for 4 games there. The league’s long time President Ed Abakumoff led the day’s short honor roll of 5 bowlers with games of 159-186-234-202 for 781. Closely followed by Robert Audette with 208-210-187-167 for 772.

The three others hit a 200 game each, Emad Aranki improved with a 216, Paul Taffolla, Jr got his first 204 in this league and a lady Celia Salcedo got this season’s first woman high game with her 203. Since Salcedo already has the woman’s season high series 705 rolled earlier, the league’s Vice-President Sharon Caldwell improved with her day’s high 185 game for the women season high game.

League leading Team Eagle Rock led by Audette with his 772 sweeping 5 points and teammate Aranki’s 216 beat Team Mid City 13-7 to stay in first. Second place Team Orange County with Taffolla, Jr’s 204 gained a half point with a 13.5 to 6.5 win over Team S F Valley. Third place Team Hollywood remained in third although being throbbed by Abakumoff’s Team Riverside 13-7. Aba-kumoff’s 781 and teammate Randy Salazar both swept 5 points each while Hollywood’s Jim Mohr alone swept 5 of Hollywood’s 7 points.

The league thanks Cal Bowl’s management and staff for hosting and will look forward to do better next year on its second trip in April. As in the league’s rules for only on stop in month of December to allow bowlers to be with their families for the holidays. The first stop in the new year will be at Covina Bowl on January 4, 2015 at Noon.

This 53 years old deaf traveling league wishes all the bowlers and fans Happy holidays and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

his many contributions to our sport. REMEMBER HIS CONTRIBUTIONS.

In addition to his contri-butions Goldie was a great bowler. He was Del Rosa Lanes Bowler of the Year sev-eral times and competed on the Pacific Coast Bowlers (PCB) Tour and in Professional Bowl-ers Association (PBA) tourna-ments in his younger days. He bowled in 42 California State Tournaments and had a high game of 299. REMEMBER HIS SUCCESSES.

As each of us age our friends and family sometimes forget what we once were. Let us not forget what Goldie once was. Remember him, remember a strong Goldie, a tough competitor, a winner and a guy who celebrated the successes of his friends as well as his own. REMEMBER HIS FRIENDSHIP.

Besides competing him-self Goldie sponsored some of our best local bowlers in tournaments, including Ray Cobb, Corky DeMaio, Gary Madison, Tom Robison and Ron Sandusky to name a few. REMEMBER HIS SUPPORT.

In an effort to celebrate Goldie’s life and bowling ca-reer, the staff and bowlers at Del Rosa Lanes are taking steps to REMEMBER HIM. His favorite drink (VO and soda) will be called “The Goldie” in the King Pin Lounge within Del Rosa Lanes. On periodic Fridays all league bowlers will wear something red to honor Goldie and REMEMBER HIM. You should have been at Del Rosa Lanes last Friday to see the SEA OF RED. Rest in peace dear friend, WE WILL REMEMBER.

EVERYONE IS INVITED

A SPECIAL MEMORIAL EVENT will be held at Del Rosa Lanes in the King Pin Lounge on Saturday, Decem-ber 13 from 1 to 4 PM for Goldie Goldman. For more in-formation contact RON SAN-DUSKY at 909-886-4675.

NORWALK — Sunday, I was watching the “NOMADS” bowl their monthly tourna-ment (at Keystone Lanes). I overheard a member say, “ I saw a guy leave the 5-7-10 split three times in a row.”

Well, up went the antenna! I corraled the story teller and squeezed this tale from Carlos Hamilton (a director for the “NOMADS” singles tourna-ment club).

Seems the event hap-pened three weeks ago at Gable House Bowl. The “UN-NAMED BOWLER” was bowling league on the high end. He left the 5-7-10 on the left lane and picked up the 5-7. On the right lane it was a ditto! Back on the left lane - - - #3 SOUR APPLE.

Another first for me, how about you?

DOWNEY — After a crazy unprecedented last night of the 2nd Round, it was SYSCO coming from 3 games back to make, and then win the 3 game roll-off. Never in the history of the league had a Round come down to a 4 way tie, requiring all four teams to then bowl separately on their own pair, moving each game and high total pins for the 3 game set determining the winner. I had alluded to the fact last week that a roll-off was possible, but nobody truly expected it to unfold with 4 teams being tied. Even more incredulous was the fact that the Round Winner, SYSCO, actually started the round 0-5 and then 1-9 after two weeks! They went 22-3 down the stretch over the last 5 weeks, and then once they smelled victory, it was their very own CK1 that locked it down. Owner Charlie Kinstler came up clutch in the 3 game roll-off, leading all scorers by a bunch with 648, his teammate Gabriel Martinez was the only other bowler to crack SIX with a 604. Charlie started hot, striking 6 of his first 7 shots, but opened both 9th and 10th to end at 211. The next game he started with another open, but settled in and finished with a six bagger to end with 236. Then in Game 3, with most of the other teams having finished and knowing they needed a big finish, bowlers 1 & 2 had both opened in the 10th, Charlie tossed 3 clutch strikes to finish with a four bagger and 201 locking up the win for his SYSCO team. It was a very long, but exciting night, and nothing was decided until the last two bowlers in the tenth. SYSCO finished with 2235, Threadworks was next at 2213, followed by DV8 2172, and American Harvest Vodka 2080. Great job guys, it was a very fun and exciting round, and as one can see, a very competitive one as well.

This is how we managed to get to all that excitement at the end. Top Seed & Round 1 Winner Keystone Lanes bowled blind, matching their scores with Threadworks and increased their overall lead with a 5-0 sweep. Charles Zelaya 245/669 & Arnold Cheesman 256/621 led the way for Keystone. Threadworks, holding a 3 game lead start-ing the night, struggled out of the gate, losing Game 1 to DV8 by 66. They came back to win Game 2, but it was a huge 10th frame in Game 3 that propelled DV8 to a 4-1 win, and a tie for the round. Eric Snow 614 & Paul Varela 605 topped the pair and Threadworks. Next we had eventual winner SYSCO facing off with Forest Lanes, and it was SYSCO winning Game 1, and then Game 3 & Totals to lock up their spot in the roll-off. Same story here as Charlie and Gabriel led

the way with 637 & 606. American Harvest entered the night down by 4 games, their only hope was to sweep and that is what they did. Miguel Garcia with 618 paced the winners, overcoming the 638 shot by Power House Video Games Lee Liu.

In other action, it was a battle of titans as Vernon Adams went strike for strike with Billy Myers Jr. as the two finished the night 1-2 in the league. Billy had the better set (696) but Vernon (683) had more help as his CASAMIGO’S Tequila crew took down The Professional Approach 5 zip. Next it was Erickson Foods pulling an Italian Job on Pino’s Pizza in Game 3, coming from about 80 down to slice up their opponent and win 4-1. Raul Spanky Rosales 629 & Bobby Campagnale 614 carved out the wins for Erickson. Linder Insurance also added to their win total, as they swept past Blizz Yogurt 5 to nil as Anthony Santos 243/677 led the way. Mike Jennings 256/680, Kevin Gagnon 240/651, and Gary Duran with 619 powered their way over J.A.T.’s DeeRonn Booker who continued his hot bowling with 251/677, as Tifco Industries swept away their opponent, 5-0. BOWLIUM was too much for Los Altos Trophies as James Tipton 267/644 and Scott Poddig 236/639 helped lead their team to the 5-0 sweep. In yet another shutout, it was Doug Kempt 627 leading the way as Alhambra Coin Center took down Cook’s Bowling Supply. GJC Services got a 608 series from their anchor, David Gullett and won 4-1 over Herzog Insurance.

Sidepot winners were Game 1 Arnold Cheesman 256 Game 2 Billy Myers Jr. 268 and 3rd Game Super Pot went to Lee Liu 244. The Financial Advisor’s 2nd game pot went to Billy Myers Jr. as well, with his 268 ($240) nipping James Tipton who collected 2nd and $100 for his 267.

With two rounds in the books, we have two teams qualified for the end of the year Roll Offs, Keystone Lanes and SYSCO. Next week will bring new hope, new challenges, and a LOT of new balls as we transition from 26 Feet, to 46 Feet of lane oil. Most bowlers can go back to having a true spare ball, break out the sanding discs, and get ready for a solid seven weeks of not hooking the whole lane.

The longer high volume pattern offers its own unique challenges, so come down to Del Rio in Downey and check it out! See if the best bowlers in So Cal have what it takes to adjust, and take what the lane is giving them. Congrats again to SYSCO on their victory!
