The theme of the winter 2014 Activity Guide is “winter wonderland” because we at Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services truly believe that winter is a time of wonder and beauty.

Welcome to winter! Welcome to a wonderland of snow, tobogganing, skiing, sledding, and cozy nights by the fire. This year, return to the simple joys that a yard full of snow can bring. Grab your skis, snowshoes, skates, sled or snowman making kit and get outside!

And if the outdoors still does not call to you, perhaps it’s an opportunity to explore the amazing indoor activities available: the Tournament Capital Centre gyms, pools and track, test out the experience of a fitness class offered at many of the facilities around the City, go skating at one of the arenas, learn something new at the Museum, or get creative in one of the many arts and culture programs available. Winter Wonderland

The past 5 years have seen Sandy transition from a diagnosis of breast cancer, treatment, enrollment into the Sensational Survivors exercise program to an “aging athlete” with the Spirit Warriors dragon boat team. Sandy believes that the TCC monthly track pass is the best value in town and provides a wonderful social environment to motivate her to stay active during the winter months.

Walking at the TCC indoor track and fitness classes including Zumba and yoga keep Sandra busy and active in the winter months and exercising in the winter is necessary to keep fit for summer dragon boating season. Sandra feels that after living and working in Ontario for her whole life, moving to Kamloops has been like retiring to a southern resort. She loves looking out at the surrounding mountains on winter mornings and knowing that that a wide range of options are available both indoors and out to keep her active. Sandra looks forward to trying snowshoeing this year!

Given our abundance of outdoor winter recreational opportunities it is important that everyone be careful around frozen lakes, rivers and streams. According to the Lifesaving Society almost three quarters of ice-related incidents occur on lakes while the rest occur on rivers. Male snowmobilers account for the majority of winter drownings – 62% of these incidents involve open water/ice holes and 38% involve thin ice.

Make sure everyone in your family knows these basic ice safety and self-rescue tips courtesy of the Lifesaving Society: 1. Always check ice thickness before venturing out. Snowmobiles require

at least five inches of clear solid ice and autos at least eight inches to a foot of clear solid ice.

2. Be suspicious. You cannot tell the strength of the ice by its appearance. Temperature, thickness, snow cover, water depth, size of water body, load distribution and currents are all factors affecting ice safety.

3. Check with a local bait shop or resort owner for known ice conditions, thin ice areas or dangerous open water conditions.

WHAT TO dO IF YOu bReAk THROugH THe ICe?1. Don’t panic - the clothes you’re wearing will trap

air and keep you buoyant.2. Turn toward the direction you came from and place

your hands and arms on the unbroken surface. 3. Kick your feet and try to push yourself forward on top

of the unbroken ice on your stomach like a seal. 4. Once you are lying on the ice, don’t stand up.

Roll away from the break until you’re on solid ice

An electric clothes dryer is the second largest user of energy in your home. Lower your energy consumption by hanging your clothes to dry

whenever possible. If you cannot hang them to dry, add a dry towel to a load to speed up the drying process. Or use two dryer balls in your dryer which will

separate the clothes better and shorten the drying time by up to a third. What is the largest energy consumer?

Recycling – Clothing SwapThere are many benefits to having a clothing swap. With the “go green” trend becoming so popular over the past few years, more people are recognizing the waste caused by throwing out wearable clothing. People are finding ways to re-use and recycle their unwanted clothing by re-selling or donating. Clothing swaps are a direct and social way of recycling your clothes. Instead of dropping them off at a donation center, you trade them with others.

Benefits to Our Environment 1) Recycling takes items

you have finished with and puts them back into circulation.

2) By passing your clothes, accessories or equipment on to others, you are diverting materials from landfill conserving resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

3) Reusing a product reduces the demands for water, energy and raw materials. Reducing the impact on the environment.

4) Swapping 1 suitcase (20kg) of clothes saves enough energy to run a TV non-stop for 1.7 years.

5) The best part of clothing swap no wallet needed!

KIDS WHO PLAY ON FROZEN RIVERS ARE WALKING ON THIN ICE

One out of every 12 Canadians who drowns each year plunges through un-safe ice. In almost half of these cases, people drown while simply walking, playing, or fishing.

Keep kids safe by keeping them off of the ice and do not leave children unsupervised when playing near river shore ice. The crust that forms on top of a river is unstable due to water swirling beneath.

Rescue tips for a child who slips through thin ice:• Call for help• Encourage and help the child

with a long reaching assist: rope, ladder, hockey stick, tree branch, etc...

• When the child grabs the reaching assist, pull gently to ease him/her out

• Tell the child to crawl along the ice with feet spread

• Reach or throw but don’t go!

When the child reaches safety, remove wet clothing as soon as dry garments are available and seek medical attention.

For more information regarding ice safety visit: www.lifesaving.bc.ca

The Lifesaving Society is a national, charitable organization working to prevent drowning and water-related injury through its training programs, Water Smart® public education campaign and aquatic safety management services.

Staying Active during Winter MonthsWondering how to stay active this winter? The cold and snow don’t have to be a deterrent, in fact, use them to your advantage! Here are 5 suggestions to stay active during the winter that you can do as a family.

1. Shovel the driveway! As the saying goes, ‘many hands make light work’! Perhaps there is a senior in your neighbourhood? Why not shovel their driveway and get more physical activity while doing a good deed!

2. Try a new sport! Has fencing always peeked your interest? Always thought you would like to try karate? Why not join indoor soccer and keep your skills sharp all year long! Discover new activities and invite your family to give them a try too.

3. Go sledding! Put on your snow gear and helmet and head outside for some sledding! Walking up the hills is a great way to get some physical activity during the snowy months while spending some quality time with your family.

4. Build a snow family! Get a carrot, toque and some sticks for arms and build a snow man! Building the body requires a lot of physical movement and takes teamwork! Your family could build a family out of snow!

5. Go skating! Did you know Kamloops has some great skating rinks? For more information, check out our website at www.kamloops.ca/facilities/arenas

Winter is the time for outdoor exploration!Bundle up and let’s get outside! From snowy walks, to skiing, snowshoeing, skating and beyond we live in an incredible playground just outside our front doors. Winter is the perfect time to try a new activity, and just get out and play. With exciting programs like snowshoeing (pg. 34), public skating, learn to ski clinics in the community and more there is something for everyone!

don’t like the cold? Check out the great selection of winter fitness and sports programs at the TCC and in the community. Winter is a great time to establish a fitness routine that will carry you into the next season!

February 14 is wear red day!Support Heart and Stroke

awareness by wearing yourbest red shirt to school or work!

WearRed Day

Worms at Work: Compost inside your home, year round, with red wiggler worms (vermicomposting). A bin of

red wiggler worms are able to eat half of their body weight a day of your organic waste and the bin is small enough to fit under a kitchen sink.

Winter composting is still possible with a Backyard composter. Organics will freeze, but will decompose quickly when it thaws out in the

spring. Help it break down faster by turning it when it thaws out and adding carbon rich leaves.

February is heart MonthDid you know, that “heart disease and stroke take one life every 7 minutes and 90% of Canadians have at least one risk factor”.

Beginning February 1st, a month long campaign begins to bring awareness for heart disease and stroke with the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Many risk factors exist of heart disease and stroke, some of which you can control. Did you know that Physical inactivity is one of them?

Canadians adults are recommended to achieve a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise each week to maintain their current health. That is only 2.5 hours per week! A daily dose of atleast 30 minutes is recommended, and this can be further broken down into three-ten minute bouts of exercise each day.

Join us to celebrate getting active in February by:

aquaFiTnEssAquafit is exercising through movement in water. Water generates natural ‘resistance’ which facilitates a full-body workout at your own pace and intensity. Buoyancy promotes ‘low impact’ movement by decreasing the shock transmitted through your bones and joints.

aqualite: For beginner to experienced exercisers looking for low intensity, low impact class in shallow water.

Aquafit: For all levels of exercisers looking for a low impact, high intensity class in shallow water. These classes feature full body strength, flexibility and cardio training.

Deep Water Aquafit: For intermediate to experienced exercisers looking for a no impact, high intensity class in deep water. These classes feature full body strength, flexibility, and cardio training and require flotation belts which are provided.

saFE To PaRTiciPaTE - PaR-q and youBeing more active is very safe for most people; however, some people should check with their doctor before they start becoming much more physically active. All Aquafit participants must review the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) prior to participation. If you are between the ages of 15 and 69, the PAR-Q will tell you if you should check with your doctor before you start. If you are over 69 years of age and you are not used to being very active, check with your doctor before participating. For more details, please talk to the instructor or visit kamloops.ca/swim.

You have the power to motivate! This winter, take the cold weather as an opportunity to engage in the “buddy system”. Try a new activity or return to an interest with a friend. Exercising with company is a great way to stay motivated especially on the days that you would rather stay home. A companion also provides some security as the days are getting shorter and you may find yourself heading outdoors in the dark. You may surprise yourself at the motivation you provide to your exercise partner. You have the power to motivate!

“Movement is a medicine for creating change in a person’s physical, emotional, and mental states.”– Carol Welch

ColdWeatherSafety

The cold air can provide some added stress on your circulatory and respiratory systems when exercising

or doing activity outdoors.Remember to bundle up andlimit your intensity until you

are fully warmed up.

Active AgingFITNESS IN MOTIONZUMBA® Gold Zumba® Gold targets the largest growing segment of the population - baby boomers. It takes the Zumba® formula and modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs of the active aging participant, as well as those just starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle. What stays the same are all of the elements the Zumba® Fitness Party is known for - zesty Latin music like salsa, merengue, cumbia, and reggaeton; exhilarating, easy-to-follow moves; and an invigorating, party-like atmosphere.

Session Schedule:Two nights per week, 6:30-8:00 pm (Program runs in two, 5-month blocks)

Venues at TCC:• Field House• KGTC Gymnastics/Trampoline Centre• Private Training Lab - Weight Room

Program Fee:$60/month for 10 months of training.
