Greetings from the Interim Director’s offi ce here at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.

As I write this letter, I am one month into the job of overseeing museum operations while the search is underway for the next Director of the Brooks. We are pleased to report the search is off to a great start. We have engaged the prominent nonprofi t leadership recruiting fi rm Phillips Oppenheim, which has posted a detailed position description, called for applicants, and begun the task of narrowing them down to a short list of the most promising prospects for consideration by the Brooks Board of Trustees.

We feel confi dent about the process, and confi dent the Brooks will soon have an outstanding new leader to serve as the museum’s 15th Director.

We are also pleased to report that in the meantime museum operations are humming, as you can see from the wealth of exhibitions, programs, and events listed in this edition of Brooks Calendar. From our special exhibition Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt to our free Holiday Pajama Party and Holiday Artist Market events, there are plenty of great reasons to visit the Brooks.

Finally, the work of the Brooks happens because supporters like you make it happen. I hope you will consider a year-end gift in support of everything the Brooks does. From where I sit, I can assure you that your gift will be thoughtfully and carefully spent on the world-class exhibitions, programs, and events that enrich the lives of our diverse community here in Memphis. Thank you for your ongoing support.

We look forward to seeing you at the Brooks.

OCTOBER 18 – JANUARY 18, 2015

Imagine yourself in ancient Egypt, with a problem that you could not handle without divine intervention—maybe a huge bill you couldn’t pay, a lingering illness, or perhaps the need to communicate with a lost loved one. What would an ancient Egyptian do? Among other things, they would offer a votive mummy to a particular god or goddess. Since the ancient Egyptians believed that all creatures had souls, a mummified animal could carry a message into the otherworld where it could communicate with the divine and the deceased alike. Over the long span of Egyptian history, this practice became quite popular. Centuries later archaeologists are still learning about the millions of ancient animal mummies, ranging from shrews to crocodiles, which have survived in desert burial grounds along the Nile.

Although most animal mummies were meant as votive offerings, they could also serve other purposes. For instance, ancient Egyptians sometimes placed preserved animals in tombs to serve as foodstuffs in the afterlife. Likewise the pets of the country’s rulers were sometimes mummified and placed in their masters’ tombs to provide eternal companionship in the hereafter. Lastly, the Egyptians regarded a very small number of animals as manifestations of a particular deity. Such creatures were carefully tended until death, and then mummified and buried.

Featuring over 30 animal mummies, Soulful Creatures is the first major exhibition to focus on this fascinating and enigmatic aspect of ancient Egyptian culture and religion. Drawn from the celebrated holdings of the Brooklyn Museum, the exhibition also includes over 69 works of Egyptian art related to the ceremonial use of animals. Among these objects is the exquisite alabaster statue of Pepy I with Horus Falcon, a masterpiece of early portraiture, and the Stela of Intef and Senettekh, which shows a couple and their dog with food they’ve stockpiled for the afterlife.

BROOKS INTRODUCES: WHITTEN SABBATINIOn view through January 3, 2014

Jackson, Mississippi native Whitten Sabbatini spent a year in Memphis

photographing strangers in public places. This exhibition highlights local

architecture, automobiles, colors, and characters that caught the artist’s eye.

The photographs make a statement about the city that is poetic, weighty,

and all together beautiful.

EXHIBITIONS

FEDERICO CASTELLÓN / IN PRINTOn view through January 4, 2015

The etchings and lithographs of Federico

Castellón (1914-1971) that are presented

in this exhibition hover between surrealism

and realism, a style most recently termed

“magic realism.” Castellón’s work is primarily

distinguished by his figures, which are

depicted realistically yet appear to be in a

trance-like state. A quiet stillness—a sinister

strangeness—that pervades his imagery is an

element that underlies much of his graphic

work. It is a quality that Castellón masterfully

renders through the clarity and tone of his

black and white prints.

RECENT PHOTOGRAPHY ACQUISITIONSOn view through January 11, 2015

This exhibition of photographs acquired between 2006 and 2012 includes many

images that have not been exhibited. They range from portraits of Johnny and

June Cash by Annie Leibovitz and a couple dancing by Malick Sidibé, to a

wedding photograph of Mr. and Mrs.

Kenneth Whalum by Hooks Brothers

Photography. In contrast are close-

ups of plants by Karl Blosfeld and

Aaron Siskind, as well as night scenes

of Manhattan by André Kertész,

and Adolf Fassbender. An eclectic

group of photographs, the images are

welcome additions to the permanent

collection.

WILLIAM WEGMAN, VIDEO WORKS: 1970 – 1974

On view through February 8, 2015

In the 1970s, before William Wegman shot the

Weimaraner dog portraits that would win him

mass acclaim, he created over a thousand short

video art works. Borrowing from–or poking fun at–

post-modern impulses of Conceptual art, Body art,

Performance, and Post-minimalism, Wegman’s

videos threw off the seriousness of the decade.

Unscripted and unedited, the short video works

seen here predate “YouTuber” amatuerism and the

aesthetic of cell phone videos, with an awareness

of the visual clichés they evoke and a deadpan

humor to match.

Curated by Elizabeth Murphy, Marketing Associate

LOOKING AT WOMENOn view through February 22, 2015

Women have been the subject of art for centuries appearing in a variety

of roles: goddess, harlot, mother, or femme fatale. They appear dressed,

nude, mysterious, demure, or playful. Treated by both male and female

artists, it can often be difficult to tell who weilded the brush. Who is

doing the looking—the subject and/or the viewer—complicates our

understanding of all these artworks. How the artist chose to portray

the figure–naturalistically or abstractly, sympathetically, clinically, or

playfully—affects how we respond to the image. The fourteen paintings

and drawings, which span from 1889 to 2011, are drawn from the

museum’s permanent collection.

Since established in 1992, Jeniam Foundation

has embodied the family motto of foundation president

Andrew Clarkson: learn, earn and return. Mr. Clarkson,

a Scottish-born theater buff and financial maven, learned

by acquiring multiple university degrees, and earned

principally as the top financial officer at Memphis-based

Malone & Hyde, then AutoZone. In recent years, Mr.

Clarkson has been returning to Memphis, as the city

that supported his successful career, by funding the arts

here. In recognition of his generosity, Mr. Clarkson was

awarded the 2004 Outstanding Philanthropist Crystal

Award by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

The Jeniam Foundation supports the Brooks as a

Community Partner.

Jeniam’s investment in the Brooks has ranged from

sponsorship of this year’s Marisol: Sculptures & Works on

Paper exhibition to funding innumerable practical needs.

These range from upgraded computers and professional

development for Brooks staff to the installation of

building-wide Wi-Fi and a new tent covering for the

Brushmark Restaurant terrace.

RECENT ACQUISITION

A native New Yorker, Eva Bernhardt lived in Memphis for many years as her husband Herman served as a physician

at the Veteran’s Hospital. She taught biology and, as part of the Women’s Army Corp, served as a tail gunner trainer

during World War II. Later she studied under Henry Easterwood at the Memphis Academy of Arts (today Memphis

College of Art) and went on to teach weaving at the college between 1972 and the early 80s. An accomplished

artist, her work was exhibited at Arkansas Art Center, Mint Museum, Speed Museum, and the Memphis Brooks

Museum of Art, and she won many prizes and awards. Like Easterwood, she worked in a variety of styles from

abstract florals in bright colors to geometric shapes in more muted earth tones.

The Brooks is deeply grateful to Mrs. Bernhardt who generously left a bequest specifically for the acquisition of works of art for the permanent collection.

TALK: DR. NIGEL STRUDWICK, EGYPTOLOGIST, UNIVERSITY OF

MEMPHIS

From the Nile to the Mississippi: Memphis in Egypt and its Animal

Mummies.

Most citizens of Memphis know that our city gets its name from the ancient capital of Egypt. But how much do they know about ancient Memphis and its huge necropolis,

Saqqara? It seems fitting to close Soulful Creatures with a look at the ancient sites, which

also conveniently have produced thousands or millions of the

mummified types of animals which have been on display at the Brooks.

Included with museum admission and free for members.
