Teaching of Yoga
through story and adventure!
The one bug every child should catchWarning - this bug will stimulate your child’s imagination while getting them physically fit.
YogaBugs combines the art of story telling with yoga postures, breathing and relaxation, to create magical adventures in which every child is the leading star, the focus of that adventure. Often, the “I don’t want to do this” child can’t resist joining Nidhi on ‘the Magic Carpet’, ‘flying on the broomstick’ or ‘Swimming down the Nile’. Yoga helps children become more conscious of their bodies and their breathing and at the same time their flexibility, strength, posture and joint mobility all improve. The storytelling captures their imagination and is a real confidence booster. Most children can’t wait for the next class and want to do this every day.
YogaBugs is now running classes in Moseley and Harborne for children aged 1 to 12. Call Nidhi on 0121 449 8858 or email [email protected]

Urban Coffee Co, a newly emerging group of independent coffee shops has opened its newest branch in the School Yard development on the corner of York Street and High Street in Harborne.
And if you are serious about your coffee then this is the place to be. The people who work here are absolutely obsessed with providing the best coffee ‘this side of the moon.’
To achieve this goal only the highest quality coffee beans from Guatemala and Brazil make their way into your cup. These are ground in three different ways depending on your preference. If you want to know more about the coffee just ask head barista Charlie who will be happy to tell you anything you’d like to know.
They are also serious about providing superb locally baked cakes, and their mouth-watering menu was crafted by the executive chef for the group.
The café is stunning with big windows overlooking the old school playground which has been transformed into a private square. It is on two levels with a beautiful spiral staircase taking you to the first floor.
The Urban Coffee Co is the first business to open its doors within the School Yard development. When the School Yard is fully open it is expected to host amazing dining experiences plus a community food school whilst the former caretakers house will be returned to its former residential glory. To enclose the square at the rear, a contemporary new build will house a handful of luxury apartments.

If your child is in year 5, then unless you are already on the case, you need to start thinking about the 11 plus to ensure the best chance of getting into grammar school.
We spoke to a local private tutor who gives us a little advice on how to best prepare our children for this next big step in their lives.
Terry Greaves of Primary Plus said: “In the run up to the SATs in May it is really important to give children extra help with general literacy and numeracy, particularly if they are on the cusp of a level 5 or 6.
“And if you haven’t yet started thinking about the 11 plus – now is the time. A little help from a private tutor between now and the time of the tests in September will go a long way towards ensuring that your child achieves their full potential.
“By now you already will know where your child sits within the class in terms of streaming and there is much more movement between groups at this time with teachers often using this possible movement to motivate the children.
When they start secondary school there will be very little movement between streams.
“At Primary Plus we offer a free initial assessment which enables us to give you a clear idea of your child’s potential.”
Primary Plus is located in the Jewellery Quarter with on-street parking. There are two dedicated teaching rooms that can accommodate up to six children. The teaching sessions are 90 minutes long and are 5pm-6.30pm and 6.30-8pm weekdays and 11.30-1pm Saturdays.
Teaching focuses on general literacy and numeracy support, SATs preparation and 11 plus preparation.

Christmas is such a wonderful time of celebration, feasting, and often over indulgence, which every year means that many of us start January with health related New Year’s resolutions.
The top 10 New Year's resolutions last year* were:
1: Eat more healthily and exercise regularly
2: Drink less alcohol
3: Learn something new
4: Quit smoking
5: Better work life balance
6: Volunteer
7: Save money
8: Get organised
9: Read more
10: Finish those around the house ‘to do’ lists
So what’s it going to be for you in 2014? If you are like most of us and health and fitness is a top priority, then hopefully our list of local gyms and fitness clubs will help. See page 18.
Or you might have something more deep and personal that you want to tackle, in which case it could help to read the articles on pages 17 and 19 from a local life coach and therapist.
Whatever you decide to focus on in 2014, the whole team at My Moseley & Kings Heath wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

People behave in a way that has been influenced by their experiences during childhood, according to Life Coach, Dominic Borsberry.
Dominic said: “If you are told you are stupid, bad, or wrong as a child, then you believe it and continue to behave in that way. Which is why people rarely learn from their own mistakes. Instead they make the same ones over and over again.
“Through many years study and training, I have developed a support system called positive change programming, which I use to help people unlearn their negative and damaging subconscious behaviours.
“Self talk is going on in everybody’s heads continually, but up to 80 per cent* of the time this is negative self talk. I help people change their internal dialogue so that instead of self doubt they feel self confidence. Most clients get immediate benefits because the programme is so powerful.”
If you have become locked into repeated negative habits then there is a way out. The answer is within your own head.
Unlock the power of your own mind
Some of this must resonate with you if you have read this far, in which case Dominic has a particular message for you: “Of course, many of you know, as you read this now, that you sometimes feel anxious and fearful in your relationships, health and wealth. So if you would like to positively change those areas now, call me.”
Dominic helps people achieve their life goals, improve their confidence, and helps them with relationship issues, weight loss, energy levels, stress and anxiety and presentation skills.

The gift of peace of mind
Christmas is a time of heightened stresses, which is absolutely normal. But if you feel stressed most of the time then it will be having a negative affect on you and those around you and Christmas can become a crisis point.
Jan Tween, local therapist said: “If you are noticing that you don’t enjoy the things that used to give you pleasure this can be a sign of depression kicking in.
“Or if you become aware that occasional extreme behaviour has become overwhelming, then you could be suffering from high levels of stress.
“There are a number of ways that you can tackle these yourself.
“You can learn relaxation techniques, mindfulness, and deep breathing exercises. And in the short term these can help, but what they are doing is smoothing over the cracks,” she said.
To be free of stress or depression takes a little more work which is where someone like Jan comes in.
Jan helps her clients to get to the nub of the issue that is underlying negative emotions and behaviours. She then helps them rebuild their lives from the very foundations.
On average people see Jan just three or four times and in many cases they walk away transformed.
Jan offers a free half hour session for people to decide whether this is the right thing for them, and it is worth checking your private medical insurance to see if the cost can be covered. You can also ask to be referred by your GP.
Employers can provide this within their employee benefits package which can result in a reduced level of stress-related absenteeism.

Kings Heath photographer takes the fashion world by stormYou might think that it’s only top London photographers that get on in the world of fashion. But that is not so.
Kings Heath resident Charles Davis of Professional Photography has seen his career span many types of photography and his latest breakthrough has been in the fashion industry.
This year he was the official photographer for the Midlands Fashion Awards and Birmingham International Fashion Week. And he was one of the chosen few photographers at Style Birmingham Live which took place in September at Birmingham Town Hall.
Charles’s fashion experience has also taken him to the heart of London Fashion Week, namely as the official photographer for Manchester designer Sofia Dourvari, covering her designs at the Fashion’s Finest and Blogger’s Love events. And in December Charles is covering The Clothes Show Live.
Curvaceous Inc, a new Birmingham-based international women’s magazine that celebrates women of all shapes and sizes has now discovered
Charles and made him their official cover story photographer. Curvaceous Inc Editor Leanna Grant said: “We love to use Charlie because he just gets what we’re about and gets that shot for us.”
As well as focusing on the fashion industry, Charles is also the talent behind many of the fantastic press photos in My Moseley & Kings Heath and My Harborne & Edgbaston, including the front cover of this issue.
Amy Watson, editor said “Working with Charles over the last two years has been an absolute pleasure. He has helped us transform this little publication into a magazine that people enjoy reading and are happy to keep on the coffee table rather than tucking away with the telephone directories.”

This year has seen more changes than ever to our handy little magazines.
The first one was launched in 2006 as Moseley Directory by Moseley resident editor Amy Watson whilst on maternity leave as an alternative to returning to full time work in PR. It began as a simple mini directory promoting local businesses to local people with not much more than adverts within its pages.
Since then as well as having another baby along the way, Amy launched My Kings Heath and Edgbaston Directory. The three magazines were merged/expanded recently to bring Harborne into the fold and increase the circulation from the initial 4,000 in 2006 to 20,000 today.
Over the years the editor has put more and more pages of editorial in, with good local community stories and articles about local businesses. All these changes have hopefully led to a more pleasant reader experience.
Many of our advertisers have been with us since the very beginning and have seen the magazines evolve over the years.
Amy is pleased that these magazines help local businesses promote themselves to the community, and that local people have come to rely on them as a useful resource for finding local businesses and services. She ran the magazines all by herself until earlier this year with the arrival of Amy Maclean and Kirsty de Vos who have joined the team to build and grow links with local businesses.
Amy Watson said: “We are immensely proud of these humble little local mags, and go out of our way to make them so lovely that people want to keep them on their coffee tables, read them and enjoy them and use them to find local businesses.
“But Rome wasn’t built in a day and we know that although we have improved the magazine loads, there is still lots of room for improvement. So if there is anything you would like to see in this, your local community magazine, then please do let us know. We are always on the look out for good ideas and who better to come up with the best ideas than the people who read and use this magazine. You!”
Our story from 2006 to now
The very first issue of Moseley Directory (held by Amy Maclean on the left) was in Februrary 2006 – fast forward to the latest issue of My Moseley and Kings Heath and
My Harborne and Edgbaston held by Amy Watson and Kirsty de Vos on the right.

A Successful Start in Life at St George's Lower SchoolSt George’s School, Edgbaston, offers a complete education for boys and girls through to 18 years of age. This provides a strong, one school community where students feel settled and secure.
In November 2012 St George’s opened a nursery at the school, providing care and education from four months of age. Emphasis is on each child developing as an individual. With extremely competitive fees and excellent facilities, the nursery is a thriving environment where children find learning exciting.
Jenny Shaw, Head of the Lower School, takes a visionary approach to teaching and has introduced the idea of a holistic education. Students have smart targets set for numeracy, reading, writing and personal development. Classes rarely exceed 14 students and there is a teaching assistant in every class.
Formative assessment is ongoing. Every six weeks there is a summative assessment when new targets are set. The curriculum is varied and rich across the Lower School.
“The Lower School offers wonderful opportunities for young minds to develop,” says Jenny Shaw. “Our children are very happy here and this shows in their successful achievements.”

Keeping warm this winterIt’s that time of year when we are all trying to keep our homes warm, but how much of that expensive heat goes straight out the window?
Local family window company, Finesse Windows Ltd, is offering free thermal imaging checks so you can know once and for all how much of your hard earned money is disappearing into thin air.
This thirty minute assessment consists of a visual check of your windows as well as a thermal image assessment for each window or door. You will get a summary report of the current state of your property and some recommendations for improvements.
Managing Director Russell Bridge said: “Most people don’t realise that up to 35% of their home’s heat is lost through the windows and doors. And the quality of double glazing varies dramatically.
“Factors to look out for include the quality of the glass itself, the material that the spacer bar between the panes of glass is made of, the gas which is sealed inside the glass, the detail within the frame and how effectively the window is sealed when it closes.
“These, together with a precision fitting make all the difference between A
rated and lesser quality windows.
“At Finesse we are positively nerdy about windows. To the extent that the outer pane of glass in our windows is made from sand with an ultra-low iron content – sand so rare that it is only found in two quarries in the UK.
“This means it allows more heat energy from the sun to enter the house. And the invisible metallic coating on the interior pain prevents the heat from leaving the house. All in all, this means heat comes in but doesn’t go out.”
If you would like to hear more about the passion that Finesse has for windows then call them on 0121 222 9546.
Or to find out a bit more about them from their website go to www.finesse-windows.co.uk

Ex Cathedra, world-class choir with local connectionsDid you know that one of Birmingham’s top arts companies rehearses in Edgbaston?
The Cardinal Newman Room at the Birmingham Oratory has been the regular rehearsal space for the internationally renowned choir and consort, Ex Cathedra for more than a decade.
It is there that founder and Artistic Director of Ex Cathedra, Jeffrey Skidmore, and his amazingly talented singers prepare for the many concerts they give not only in Birmingham but in leading venues and festivals across the country and further afield.
Right now they are gearing up for one of their busiest Christmas seasons ever. The choir will be giving four performances of Ex Cathedra’s unique and much loved Christmas Music by Candlelight concerts in St Paul’s Church in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter in the week before Christmas. Before then, they will give four concerts across the West Midlands and a fifth at the prestigious St John’s Smith Square Christmas Festival in London.
Ex Cathedra’s senior training choir and its junior academy will also be busy. The Junior Academy, some of whose members come from families in southwest Birmingham, will be singing in
Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Nutcracker and the senior training choir, the Academy of Vocal Music, will be singing for the Swedish Santa Lucia service in Birmingham Cathedral.
But Ex Cathedra’s first seasonal offering will be a feast of Christmas music from the time of Elizabeth I. The Ex Cathedra Consort of ten of the finest young singers in the country will be joined by the acclaimed viol consort, Fretwork, for An Elizabethan Christmas at Birmingham’s Town Hall on Sunday 8 December, 4pm.

Players treble their chances of a win with local charity lotteryJust as Camelot doubles ticket prices to £2, TLC lottery has revealed that its players are 3.5 times more likely to win a weekly cash prize of £1000 than those paying the extra £1 on the National Lottery.
For just £1 a week, TLC players enjoy a 1 in 15,000 chance of winning as opposed to Camelot’s 1 in 55,500, for the same prize and double the investment.
Like the National Lottery, TLC players also raise vital funds for charity. As a local lottery TLC donates 55p from every pound to three local charities: Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham St Mary’s and Focus Birmingham. This figure is 175% higher than the legal minimum of 20p and way in excess of Camelot’s 28% charitable donation.
"We work very hard to keep the ticket price to £1 and are delighted to know that our players have such a great chance of winning a nice prize fund. There has never been a better time to buy local,” says TLC Lottery Manager, Carl Bayliss who goes on to say “our prizes may not be life-changing, but in raising over £400,000 last year, our players support is changing the lives of others."
Players looking to treble their chances of a win and help raise vital funds for Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham St Mary’s and Focus Birmingham can do so in less than 5 minutes on the TLC website www.tlclottery.co.uk

Planning for the inevitable
In our latest ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ feature, we meet Nicky Beggan, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives who specialises in probate cases.
It is going to happen to us all one day, yet still we are reluctant to set down our wishes at to what will happen after we are gone.
Nicky helps families complete the application for probate after they have lost a loved one. In many instances this can a stressful process when emotions are running high.
As well as putting the paperwork together, Nicky helps people to cope with the emotional side of things and engage with each other.
Probate is a time when visiting a lawyer is essential, but Nicky has some words of advice to help this process run as smoothly as possible.
Nicky said: “Probate work need not be complicated or time consuming. And it goes without saying that the simpler the process, the less it will cost and the more money that will remain within the estate.
“To make things as straightforward as possible for your loved ones there are three simple things you can do.
“Make a Will including executors who can get along, stating who will be the guardians if there are children involved and giving details of your chosen beneficiaries.
“Give brief funeral directions, particularly whether you wish to be buried or cremated.
“Be tidy with your paperwork and make sure that people know where to find your Will. Any small accounts with nominal amounts of money in should be closed down. If left these can cost more than the funds within them to close down after you have gone.”

Darker nights return Every year, darker nights see a rise in crime when the clocks go back.
In a bold move away from traditional police advice, motion comics are being used by the force for the first time to show the ‘heroic’ ways people from the community are joining in the police’s fight against crime encompassed within the Darker Nights Return campaign.
Comic strip style posters, leaflets, billboards and messages to key community networks were promoted going into and continuing right through the darker nights season. The campaign also stresses the importance of reporting crimes and suspicious behaviour so that officers can take action.
According to the local police force crime has been driven down to record lows over the past decade, but burglary, robbery and vehicle crime all spike with the darker nights. As a result, officers are reinforcing the message that you don’t need to be a superhero to join the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour.

As I write this it’s a lovely day, but I am sure it won’t be long before things change and Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the gritters coming out on Kings Heath High Street - what a troublesome family they are - the scourge of the neighbourhood!
Facilities-wise I am sorry to hear about the proposed closing of Kings Heath Post Office -everything is changing - Flo at the newsagent on the corner used to cash cheques for me - but she wont do it anymore. It’s a cash flo situation!
It’s that time of the year when having a good time and making sure every one you care about feels appreciated can all seem a bit too much.
Here are my top tips for smiling through Christmas and New Year:
Shop local - town can be too much and too impersonal. On your own high street you can bump into friends and neighbours and feel part of something.
Don't spend too much - it really is the thought that counts - going into debt just aint worth it.
Try and send all the cards you write – there’s nothing more dispiriting than seeing yet another card to Tom and Beryl that you didn’t get around to posting once again sitting on the kitchen table
Enjoy yourselves, look after each other and a Happy New Year xxxxxx

Tree of Light Tyndalwoods Solicitors invited clients to celebrate the life of a loved one by dedicating a Light on their Tree of Light in support of Birmingham St Mary's Hospice this festive season.
The name of everyone for whom a light is dedicated is recorded in a "Book of Lights" to be kept at the office during the month of December.
Birmingham St Mary's Hospice is non fee-paying, patients are admitted according to need, from all walks of life, all faiths and none. Its opening was made possible only through the fundraising efforts of the general public.
The Hospice has helped over 30,000 patients, their families and carers, through what can be very difficult times.

WHAT WE DID. . .
We replicated the original windows using our deco flush casement windows which feature specially designed sections added to the front face of the window which allow the opening sashes to appear recessed within the frame. This detail is typical of a period reproduction.
If you have a period property and you are thinking of restoring it in the right way, please call us or visit our showroom.
