PRINCIPAL’S REPORT 18TH NOVEMBER 2011 ISSUE 12 Dear Parents & Community Last Saturday, officially ended thirteen years of schooling for our Year 12 students. A great night of memories, laughter and tears was shared by students, staff and parents at Nambucca Heads RSL club. Academic and Special Awards were handed out to Year 12 on the night. Many thanks to Pat Nichols and Matt Gilbert, the Year 12 Advisors of 6 years, who did a great job over that time and organising the night for Year 12. The school’s excellence in creative arts continues with Rachel Hall’s wonderful paintings of her self portrait and friends, the portraits have been nominated for Art Express. I cannot remember a year where this school has not had representation at the elite HSC level for our creative arts students. A wonderful achievement. School finishes for all students on Friday 16th December and students will return on Monday 30th January. Congratulations to our Junior Debating North Coast Champions who are now off to the state finals. A great achievement from the students and their mentor, Mr Richardson. Remember there are only 4 weeks to the Christmas Holidays. Enjoy! Hilton Humphries Top NAMBUCCA HEADS HIGH SCHOOL DEBATING SUCCESS The parents of Nambucca Heads High students Hope Eadie, Zahira Gora, Connor Hoban and Jayde Hill may have long suspected their children are too good at arguing, but they now have proof. These four students have combined to win the North Coast Championship in the Premiers Debating Competition for students in Years 7 & 8, defeating Banora Point High School in the Final. Their campaign began with a narrow loss to Macksville High’s Year 7 team, but after defeating Nambucca’s Year 7 and Macksville’s Year 8 teams the Nambucca students returned to Macksville for the Zone Final where they turned the tables on the first opponents in what was probably the best debate of their campaign. After winning their Zone the team then went on to face Coffs Harbour High School, where they were again victorious, before travelling to Taree to take on Chatham High in the Lower North Coast Semi-Final. With a well-deserved win at that level the team waited to hear who their opponents would be in the Final, soon finding out they were to face Banora Point. Distance and time combined as a problem for both teams, but in the end it was decided to do the debate as a Video-Conference, with both teams speaking at their own school and Lloyd Cameron, the Department’s Debating Co-ordinator adjudicating. With the affirmative side of the topic ‘We should accept more migrants’ Jayde, as First Speaker, established a clear definition and argument to get the ball rolling, and when Zahira and Connor reinforced the case and rebutted effectively their opponents’ case the Nambucca Heads team had clearly taken out the debate. Given that this Competition started with 369 teams and the Nambucca team are now one of only ten teams left this is a great effort and they will now travel to Sydney in early December to compete in the State Championships. WRALS WRALS – Work Readiness and Living Skills is a program devised to address the chronic absenteeism that Year 10 students develop immediately after the completion of the School Certificate Reference Tests. The Program is designed to marry the objectives of the School to Work Program with experiences with local organisations and employers, the opportunity to gain credentials that should make students more employable, and as individuals, more capable of making a contribution to a better community. These are values and employment skills gained from the program.

SUSHI TRAIN The Japanese elective students from Yr.10, had a delicious excursion recently. They feasted on all kinds of Japanese cuisine at the 'Oishii Sushi Rail' at the Jetty. It was then onto the 'Cold Rock' for some very unusual ice-cream treats. Lastly the students cruised down for a leisurely stroll to see the fishing boats and yachts along the wharf to walk off all those yummy calories!.
