Dear Parents and Friends of OLSH School
Community,
Over the past few weeks Libby Banks and I
have been conducting the 2017 prep
interviews. I must admit that while it is time
consuming, it is a pleasurable part of the job.
It is always exciting to meet new families and
new children as they begin their education journey at OLSH. It is
also great to meet the younger siblings who you see at school
functions who are glad that they are finally able to come to school
and stay!
The first question we always ask is, ‘Why do you want to come to
OLSH?’ The answers are varied but the most common thing that
we keep hearing is the reputation of the school, the good teachers
that we have here, the community and feeling of acceptance for
everyone and the quality of the children that the school produces.
The tour of Prep, and for some families of the whole school facility,
only reinforces the “positive vibe” that our school produces.
Since writing the last newsletter some of the great things that I
have seen happening at OLSH include;
• The fantastic response to the fitness club every Friday
morning from the children and staff.
• The welcome the children give and share to new enrolments
who
are not only new to OLSH but also the country.
• The dedication and enthusiastic efforts of all the children in
the cast for the musical Porridge
• Finally, children and teachers working diligently in the
classroom in
an atmosphere of mutual respect for one another.
Forgive me if I sound like I am bragging, but over the past month I
have been so proud to be part of OLSH. It is easy to see why so
many people want to come to our school. I know that I have said it
before but OLSH is a great place to be.
God Bless,
John
TERM 2 WEEK 7 • 2016
2017 Prep Enrolments
We are currently busy finalising offers for Prep for 2017. We still have siblings of current families who are
coming into the office applying for enrolment. If your child is eligible for Prep in 2017 (i.e. born between 1
July 2011 and 30 June 2012) please ensure that your application is in as soon as possible. Also if you know
anyone else who is considering OLSH for Prep, please remind them to apply ASAP.
Staff News
Linda Le was the successful applicant for the Tuckshop Convenor position while Zena Vincent continues
her sick leave.
Linda is a member of our school community with children in Year 1 and Prep and has been a frequent
volunteer on tuckshop. She has had experience in the food industry and dealing with customers as well as
working with children. She commenced last week working with Michelle Marshall for the rest of the week
with a gradual transition the following week. We welcome Linda to the staff of OLSH.
We thank Michelle for assisting us during the first few weeks of this term.
Please keep Zena in your thoughts and prayers as she continues with her treatment on Monday.
School Fees
Thank you to those people who have finalised their school fees account for May. They are due this Friday.
Please assist us in meeting our financial commitments. If there are any queries about your account please
contact me. June fees will be sent home in the last week of May.
Year 6 Camp
Last week the Year 6 children attended their Leadership Camp at Emu Gully. There is a more detailed
report elsewhere in the newsletter. I really enjoyed my time with the Year 6’s. It was particularly pleasing to
hear the Emu Gully staff talk so positively about our children and special mention of the support they gave
one another. Special thanks to the staff members who gave off their time to accompany the children; Sr
Sue, Anna Tuttiett, Jessica Warnick, Brendan Ward, Damien Williams and Libby Banks. Thanks for your
efforts.
Musical Tickets Sales
Tickets for the School Musical on Thursday and Friday nights, the 9th and 10th of June are now on sale in
the undercover area before school and in the school office at other times. They are selling fast and I am
anticipating will all be sold early next week. Please don’t miss out on what will be a great celebration of our
children’s artistic abilities.
Due to the licence agreement of the musical that I was required to sign, no filming/videoing of the production
may take place.
The school producers of the musical are requesting that no photographs be taken during the musical. The
main reason is that the flashes from photos disrupts the smooth operation of the musical and will affect the
performance of the children. There are also issues with the publication of photographs from the
performance being placed on social media without proper consent.
We will be having an official photographer taking photos during the night that parents will be able to select
after the musical. We are also planning to have the musical filmed during the night, which will be available
for people after the musical. Full details in the next newsletter. I ask that people respect the decision about
photographs for the musical and refrain from taking photographs of the musical.
School Uniform – Jumpers
With cooler mornings we have seen the return of the school jumper.
In the past we have seen an excessive number of lost jumpers. This was particularly the case at the end of
Administration
the Winter in 2014 and early Winter 2015 things looked the same. Besides the frustration of this, a large
amount of time and money was wasted on lost jumpers.
A number of initiatives were introduced last year and this witnessed a drastic decrease in the amount of lost
jumpers. These will continue this year.
The children have been constantly reminded that the jumper needs to be on their back or in their bag. This
has been repeated continually and will continue to be enforced. Please remind your child of this.
I have informed our uniform shop convenor Dot Lawson that from now on every jumper that has been sold
is to be named BEFORE it leaves the uniform shop.
In the next few weeks the class teachers will be checking every child’s jumper. If there is no name on the
jumper they will be writing their name on it. If it is a second hand jumper the current owner’s name will be
written on the jumper.
We ask for your support in this area.

Administration
Dear Parents,
The season of Easter is now behind us, concluding with the great feast day of Pentecost. We have now
entered the season known as Ordinary Time. Besides the times of the year that have their own distinctive
character (Lent, Easter, Advent and Christmas) there remains a period of 33 or 34 weeks in which no
particular aspect of the mystery of Christ is celebrated but rather the mystery of Christ himself is honoured
in its fullness.
The question that had puzzled me since childhood is – Why call it Ordinary Time? So, I went to my good
friend, Mr Google and asked the same question. Here is one explanation.
Ordinary Time is called “ordinary” simply because the weeks are numbered. The Latin word ordinalis, which
refers to numbers in a series, stems from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the English word order.
Thus, Ordinary Time is in fact the ordered life of the Church. It’s appropriate, therefore, that the Gospel for
the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time (which is actually the first Sunday in Ordinary Time) always features
either John the Baptist’s acknowledgment of Christ as the Lamb of God or Christ’s first miracle – the
transformation of water into wine at the wedding at Cana.
Thus for Catholics, Ordinary Time is the part of the year in which Christ, the Lamb of God, walks among us
and transforms our lives. That’s why there is nothing “ordinary” about Ordinary Time.”
So, let’s take the time to fully explore Ordinary Time and learn more about the time that Jesus spent on our
earth.
God bless and have a great week,
Linda Allen (APRE)
Blank Cards for Sale
Some time ago, some blank cards were kindly donated to the school and these are on sale at the Reception
Desk. There are 6 packs left and I would love to see them all sold before I leave the school. Please
consider buying one of these packs at $2 each. All proceeds will be given to Sr Sue to assist her pastoral
work.
Australian Mass books for children
A message similar to the one above – I have 5 of the above Mass books for sale at $10 each. They provide
an easy-to-follow text to assist young children at Mass. Again, I would like to have sold them all before the
end of the year.
Swimming Goggles and Swim Caps
My last advertisement! – I have a small number of swim goggles and swim caps for sale. The goggles are
$1 each and the swim caps are 50c each. Once again, I am hoping to sell all these before the end of the
term. Be ready for the next swim season and purchase now.
Mini-Fair
We are another week closer to the Mini-Fair. Thanks to all who have donated a fantastic array of books,
games, puzzles and toys. Any further donations are most welcome. From this point onwards, we are
seeking donations of chocolate bars (large and small) and multi-packs of wrapped chocolates and sweets.
Please check the specials at the supermarkets – we will need a lot of chocolate for prizes for the games
activities and for the Lucky Dip.
APRE News
VIRTUES Our next Virtues Assembly will be on Thursday June 2nd. Everyone is welcome.
Thoughts for the Journey Coming Home To My Centre
Steadfast Love,
enfold me with your equanimity.
Wrap me round with tender embrace.
Gather me under your sheltering wings.
Hold me in the nest of your abiding love,
for I am a scattered one today
in need of a strongly grounded centre.
Vision and Guidance,
direct my every step and action
in this day that is filled with activity.
Help my truest, most loving self
to shine through all I am and all I do.
Permeate my entire being
until I sing fully of your love.
Keep me close to your heart,
where I know I belong.
Direct me to you, my Centre,
where I find peace, harmony,
satisfaction, guidance,
all I need
to travel the path of life well.

TUCKSHOP ROSTER
On 29 April, 18 students represented OLSH at the held at St Mark's Inala. These 18 students have been
training twice a week getting ready for the carnival and have all made significant improvements in their
times and fitness levels. Students had to run 2km (10 Years) or 3 km (11/12 Years). Of the 18 students, we
had 11 students in the top 20 for their age group - an outstanding achievement! Bernard Kalenda came 5th
in the 12 year boys age group, and will now represent the Inala District at the Met-West Cross Country
Carnival in Ipswich later this month. Whilst we didn't take out the School Trophy, if there had been an
award for Most Supportive Team, we would have won it for sure. The students all had a great day and
really motivated and encouraged each other over the finish line. Well done to all who participated!
The 10, 11, and 12 students have also commenced field events in the lead up to the which will be held on
Friday, 17 June. On Friday afternoons, they have been taking part in High Jump, Discus, Shot Put, Ball
Games and Running events. The points from these events are awarded to each House and also contribute
towards Age Champions. Children are also being selected from these events to represent the school at the
Inala District Athletics Carnival in Term 3.
The started last Friday 22 April and we had a magnificent turnout of over 100 students. Fitness Club runs
every Friday until 10 June and starts at 7:40am Students are split according to grade levels, depending on
numbers on the day. The purpose is for the children to participate in fitness games in a fun and stress-free
environment. Children must return the signed form to participate. All students MUST be wearing their
school hats for Fitness Club.

CLASSROOM MUSIC

PREP
We have been very busy in Prep this last
fortnight. We have been learning the
sounds 'Dd' and 'Tt', making Dingle Dangle
Scarecrows, Dirty Dinosaurs and Turtles.
We have also been trying very hard to
sound out our own words to write
sentences. We have been playing lots of
sight word games and reading books with
our sight words in them. In Religion the
Preps have been learning about Jesus as
a little boy and the foods he would have
helped Mary to prepare. In Science we
have been observing the weather,
especially the clouds and learning lots of
new weather words. In Maths we have
been looking at longer/shorter and working
with 5's and 10's frames. We are looking
forward to Under 8's Day and the Teddy
Bear Doctors visiting us this week!
YEAR ONE
In Religion, we have been reading and
discussing stories relating to Mary, the
mother of Jesus. These stories include
‘The Annunciation’, ‘The Visitation’ and
‘The Birth of Jesus’. We highlighted the
significant people in these stories. In
Science, we investigated the properties of
uncooked spaghetti and how the
properties change once the spaghetti is
cooked in boiling water. As part of our
English focus, we have been looking at
fictional characters in some of the picture
books written by Julia Donaldson. We are
enjoying describing the appearance of
these characters using interesting
adjectives to describe nouns. One such
character is the Gruffalo. We are using
these descriptive words to help us write a
description about each main character. We
are also very busy practising our song for
the musical.
YEAR TWO
In English we have been looking at
antonyms, synonyms, conjunctions and
compound sentences. We are continuing
to read the BFG as well as Big Books by
Jill Eggleton as part of our shared reading
time. During this time we look for wow
words, rhyming words, nouns, verbs,
adjectives and all types of punctuation.
On Monday we celebrated the Feast Day
of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. We
celebrated Mass as a whole school and
enjoyed a shared lunch with our buddy
classes. As part of Design and
Technology we have looked at different
puppets. We discussed how they work and
what materials they were made from. The
children had fun making a paper puppet
face. They came up with some amazing
ideas. Morning Show is carried out with
much enthusiasm. We have heard some
beautiful prayers, funny jokes, interesting
facts and great clues.
YEAR THREE
The Year 3s were very pleased with their
efforts during the NAPLAN tests and felt
confident and happy about the tests. This
week the children had the opportunity to
participate in Reconciliation and we also
celebrated Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
Feast Day Mass. We loved spending time
with our buddies over a shared lunch. In
HASS we have been learning the features
of mapping such as borders, orientation,
title and scale. We have been using our
atlas to locate neighbouring countries to
Australia. We are looking forward to
travelling to the Logan Entertainment
Centre to see the “52-Storey Treehouse”
LIVE.
YEAR FOUR
Science hit the fun factor this fortnight with
students testing gravitational force -
parachuting objects off balconies and
stairwells. Definitely more fun for some
than learning that fractions really are our
friend! How else are our wonderful Year
Fours going to know what is their fair
share of anything in life if they cannot do
the Maths - in this case calculating what is
the actual share - one half, one quarter,
one third, etc. The Year Four teachers are
reading some highly imaginative, and
sometimes scary, narratives as part of the
English term assessment and it is
noteworthy that some students are
carrying their religious education lesson
content on First Century Palestine over
into their narrative writing. In Humanities,
the students are each creating what is
essentially a tourism poster promoting
early 19th Century New Holland (Australia)
as a place for British families to migrate.
Interestingly, many students have had to
rethink their employment opportunities to
exclude becoming a bushranger. Who
knew so many 21st Century nine year olds
thought a bushranger was old world
language for today's environmental park
rangers! Many thanks to Year Four
parents for your support of the OLSH feast
day and working with your children in their
learning at home.
YEAR FIVE
Congratulations to all Year 5 students for
completing NAPLAN 2016 - you tried your
best and made your teachers very proud!
This week we have started rehearsing our
song "Once upon a crime" for the school
musical. In English, students have
continued working on their Caroline
Chisholm biographies and have started to
apply text connectives. Our focus in
Maths has been double-digit by double-
digit multiplication, applying these skills to
word problems and we have also explored
gross and net mass. Students have gained
further knowledge about Mary Mackillop
and have started working on creating a
collage to depict her life, values and
achievements. In Science students have
investigated scientific developments that
have contributed to everyday life, and in
H.A.S.S. students have continued to
explore the causes and impacts of floods.
In Design and Technology, students have
engaged in whole-class and small group
discussions on the key factors involved in
food preparation: food safety, personal
hygiene, sustainability and safe work
practices. Students have also observed
food preparation in various community
contexts and reported their positive and
negative findings. All Year 5 students
have been reminded of the importance of
organisation, time-management and a
positive attitude in their learning. The
KOOL KIDS program has been a fantastic
addition to the classroom - students have
started to recognise their strengths and the
power of positive self-talk.
YEAR SIX
Year 6 students attended camp from May
18th- 20th at Emu Gully at Helidon. All
