Read the passage and choose the corr ect answers .

In the world today, particularly in the two most industrialized areas, North America andEurope, recycling is big news. People are talking about it, practicing it, and discovering new waysto be sensitive  to the environment. Recycling means finding was to use products a second time. The motto  of the recycling movement is " Reduce, Reuse, Recycle".

The first step is to reduce garbage. In stores, a shopper has to buy products in blister packs, boxes and expensive plastic wrappings. A hamburger from a fast food restaurant comes in lots of packaging: usually paper, a box, and a bag. All that packaging is wasted resources. People shouldtry to buy things that are wrapped simply, and to reuse cups and utensils đ ng, ng .

Another way to reduce waste is to buy high-quality products. When low quality appliances break, many customers throw them away and buy new ones - a loss of more resources and more energy. For example. if a customer buys a high-quality appliance that can be easily repaired, themanufacturer receives an important message. In the same way. if a customer chooses a productwith less packaging, that customer sends an important message to the manufacturers. To reducegarbage, the throwaway must stop.

The second step is to reuse. It is better to buy juices and soft drinks in returnable bottles. After customers. empty the bottles, they return them to the store. The manufacturers of the drinkscollect the bottles, wash them, and then fill them again. The energy that is necessary to make new bottles is saved. In some parts of the world, returning bottles for money is a common practice . Inthose places, the garbage dumps have relatively little glass and plastic from throwaway bottles.

The third step is being environmentally sensitive is to recycle. Spent motor oil can becleaned and used again. Aluminum cans are expensive to make. It takes the same amount ofenergy to make one aluminum can as it does to run a color TV set for three hours. When peoplecollect and recycle aluminum (for new cans), they help save one of the world's preciousresources.

forward- looking  city dealers in fresh meat, fresh fish , and butter. After the Civil War ( 1860-1865), as ice used to refrigerate freight cars, i t  also came into household use. Even before 1880,half the ice sold in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, and one-third of that sold in Bostonand Chicago, went to families for their own use. This had become possible because a newhousehold convenience, the icebox, a precursor of the modern refrigerator, had been invented.

Making an efficient icebox was not as easy as we might now suppose. In the earlynineteenth century, the knowledge of the physics of heat , which was essential to a science ofrefrigeration, was rudimentary. The commonsense notion that the best icebox was one that prevented the ice from melting was of course mistaken, for it was the melting of the ice that performed the cooling. Nevertheless, early efforts to economize ice included wrapping the ice blankets, which kept the ice from doing its job. Not until near the end of the nineteenth centurydid inventors achieve the delicate balance of insulation and circulation needed for an efficienticebox.

But as early as 1803, an ingenious Maryland farmer, Thomas Moore, had been on the r ighttrack . He owned a farm about twenty miles outside the city of Washington, for which the villageof Georgetown was the market center. When he used an icebox of his own design to transport his butter to market, hr found that customers would pass up the rapidly melting stuff in the tubs of his

competitors to pay a premium price for his butter, still fresh and hard in neat, one-pound bricks. One advantage of his icebox, more explained, was that farmers would no longer have to travel tomarket at night in order to keep their produce cool.
