DE LA TERRA ORGANIC COOKWARE & TABLEWARE De La Terra’s organic cookware and tableware is handmade in the Andes Mountains of Colombia from nothing more than clay, this ceramic cookware and tableware can be accurately described as organic. No artificial chemicals of any sort are used in its production. Unlike most other ceramic cookware it has a natural clay glaze rather than a vitreous glaze. One of the most attractive features of this organic cookware and tableware is that no two pieces are ever exactly the same. Each of the potters making the product have a slightly different style and this can be seen in the form of any curved parts and particularly of any handles. Slight variations in size may also occur and are natural due to the product’s handmade nature. The natural process and the particular combination of clays used in production, make the product safe to use both in the oven, microwave, and over direct heat (gas or electric) without a diffuser. Most other ceramic will crack if exposed to the direct heat. It can also be washed safely in the dishwasher. Cooks love the products heat retention properties as well as the ability to enhance the flavor of the food. Its chic black satin finish makes it a great addition to any table. PRODUCT BACKGROUND These pieces are well known throughout Colombia and are used in many of the countries’ top restaurants for serving traditional dishes. Its origins can be traced back at least 700 years to vases and pitchers found in pre-Colombian archaeological sites. It is still made in the traditional manner, mostly by the women in a few small villages, each piece being molded into shape by hand rather spun on a wheel. The body of each piece is made from course grey clay. A finer terracotta clay in then applied thinly over the entire surface as a glaze. After drying, this is polished with very smooth pebbles of semi-precious stones such as Tiger’s Eye. The piece is then placed inside earthenware urns and fired in large earth kilns. A coarse organic dust of dried grasses is thrown into the urns immediately after firing. This burns rapidly and, by chemically reducing the iron in the glaze, turns the glaze black. The product’s black satin finish is the result of careful polishing with semi-precious stones and a special firing technique. Again, slight variations occur and, because the original color of the glaze before firing is terracotta, small reddish-brown patches are sometimes visible. These often add to the attractive appearance of the product. They are not a flaw but further confirmation the product is handmade. Traditionally these pieces were produced almost entirely by women, and although some men now help, negotiation on price and design is still controlled by the women. As demand has grown, they have gained greater economic independence, which has enhanced their role in the running of their villages.

Products have also been tested to verify that it’s microwave and dishwasher safe and that it has the resistance to thermal shock necessary for it to withstand rapid heating over a direct source of heat.
