Technology and the futureOur school recognises the increasing role technology plays in young peoples’ education today and as a result we have made a significant investment to ensure De La Salle College IT is utilised in everyday teaching and learning. The DCG/IT room (Design and Communications Graphics) has 30 hi-spec computer workshops to facilitate our DCG students. All of the computers are equipped with SolidWorks CAD – an essential component of the DCG course.

The computers are utilised for all subjects in particular project work which there is a growing demand for because of the new Junior Cycle programme Classroom Based Assessments (CBAs).

We believe that digital and computer literacy are a vital part of a student’s learning experience. All of our computers have the full suite of Microsoft Office applications installed. In Transition Year all students are timetabled for computer classes where there is particular emphasis on ECDL and web-design.

Transition YearOur Transition Year programme promotes the personal, social, educational and vocational development of the students. It provides them with an opportunity to mature and become more participative and responsible members of society.

During the year the students are encouraged to discover their own talents and abilities whilst developing skills and competencies within a well-defined academic structure. Transition Year Co-ordinator is Mr John Ryan.

This compulsory year provides the students with:

• Volunteer with a charity organisation.• Gain two weeks of work experience in a field

of their choice.• Paricipate in the president’s award Gaisce.• Becoming competent in ICT in particular in

ECDL and web-design.• Participate in a two-week exchange

programme to Bordeaux in France.• Attend speakers and courses through-out

the year specially selected with the students’ personal, social and vocational development in mind.

• Go on activity trips for a number of nights to outdoor education centres where students get an opportunity to bond and develop socially.

The school is very proud of this long running exchange programme which is in fact the longest school exchange programme in Ireland. The return of the French students to the Irish host families is always greatly looked forward to by the school and the wider community of Macroom.

While for the past 12 years De La Salle College has run an exchange programme with the Italian town of Marcallo Con Cassone which is in Northern Italy near Milan.
