4th Annual ‘Healthy Living’ Senior Fair

Friday, October 24 @ 10:00 am to 2:00 pm In ShoppingTown Mall’s Upper Level. Look for our information booth in the JCPenney’s Court. The DCL will host its 4th Annual ‘Healthy Living’ Senior Fair in ShoppingTown Mall’s upper level. NewsChannel 9 WSYR Anchor Carrie Lazarus, named Citizen of the Year and host of “Family Healthcast”, is scheduled to speak at 1:00pm. Look for the Library’s information booth in the JCPenney’s Court to pick up your guide to the event.

More than 50 exhibitors from area organizations, agencies, and businesses will be on hand to share information about their services and programs for older adults. Get free screenings for blood pressure, spine, hearing, and get a flu shot.

Enjoy the entertaining sounds of the Upstate Blend Barbershop Quartet.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers Tuesdays, September 9 through October 14 @ 5:00 - 7:00 pm This six-week training program is designed to provide caregivers of older persons with the tools needed to take care of themselves. Caregivers learn how to reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate feelings, locate resources, increase abilities to make tough decisions, and create balance in their lives. A free workbook is included.

Cheryl Hylton, RN is the Cognitive Health Specialist for St. Camillus Health & Rehabilitation Center. She combines her personal caregiving experience with her professional expertise as a nurse and staff educator to offer an informative,

practical training program for family caregivers.

Marty Pond, MS, RC, C is the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Gerontology at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center. She serves as a resource for staff on community resources and teaches in the College of Nursing Program. She has an AAS

degree in Nursing, a Bachelors degree in Science in Nursing, an All University Certificate in Gerontology and a Master's degree in Nursing Administration from Syracuse University.

Abandoned Orphans of

New York

Tuesday, Sept. 30 @ 2:00 pm

Take a look at a bygone era when orphaned and homeless children roamed the streets of New York City and joined gangs for protection. In response, city leaders created orphan asylums. Was the solution a success? Find out as local author Keene presents the forgotten story of those who grew up in these orphan asylums. Registration Encouraged.

Boy Mayor of Syracuse

A turn of the century Salt City mover and shaker comes to life in a new book. At the age of twenty-seven, James Kennedy McGuire became the youngest mayor of Syracuse, NY. He served three terms as Syracuse’s Mayor, from 1895 to 1901. Discover the colorful and dynamic personality of this statesman, author, and Irish nationalist. Book signing follows. Joseph E. Fahey is a judge in the New York State Unified Court System and an adjunct professor of law at Syracuse

University College of Law. He is a member of the Ameri-can Conference of Irish Studies, the American Irish Histor-

Custer’s Last Stand Thurs., October 9 @ 7:00 pm In June 1876, near the Little Big Horn River in Montana, the com-bined forces of native tribes over-whelmed the 7th Cavalry Regi-ment of the United States Army. The battle became widely known as Custer’s Last Stand.

Murder Mystery Party

Halloween Howl Friday, October 24 @ 7:00 pm

A neighborhood busybody is bludgeoned at a

children’s Halloween party, but her murder may be part of a larger mystery. Specific residents are being targeted

by an unknown killer thirsting for justice.

You’re invited to a mystery at the DCL! Look for clues, interrogate suspects, and solve a crime.

For ages 18 & up!

Are you a fan of whodunnits and crime solving? Discover motive, means and opportunity as you set out

to solve the crime. Participants will receive their invita-

tions prior to each event; they will discover who they are upon arrival at the scene of the crime. Additional clues

will be revealed as the evening progresses. There’s plenty of time to solve the crime, so be sure to enjoy the

provided refreshments. A good time will be had by all! Registration Required.

Teen Actors’ Recording Studio:

Own Your Voice! Saturday, October 18 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

DeWitt Community Library presents a two-part class on vocal performance and digital

recording production for teens. Designed to give young adults ages 9 - 16 experience with presentation skills and knowledge of recording. Registration Required.

Part I | 10:00 am - 12:00 pm — The session begins with SALT award-winning actress Maureen Harrington providing tips

and techniques on performing, presenting, and confidence building. Get feedback on your performance.

Then break for lunch which is included.

Part II | 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm — Local Sammy winner Todd Hobin presents audio recording and production. Learn basic

skills and be introduced to the tools, terms, and training needed to be an audio engineer. Hands-on experience with

equipment and advice on free recording software will be available.

Library Adventure Hunt Thursday, Sept. 18 at 11:00am For Grades K & up. Can you find your way through the Library? Can you find

a book about butterflies or a DVD about chemistry? How

about a book about soccer? Join the Great Library Scav-enger Hunt and test your knowledge. Grade appropriate

questions will be provided for both younger and older stu-dents.

Zoo to You on Endangered Species Thursday, Oct. 16 at 11:00am For Grades K & up. What is an endangered species? Learn

why animals are endangered, meet some of the zoo’s resident endangered

species, and find out what can be done to save them and

how you can help. This program is funded in part by the Friends of the DeWitt Community Library.

Foods of India with the South Asia Center at Syracuse University. Thursday, Nov. 20 at 11:00am For Grades K & up. India is an amazingly diverse country. This can be seen in

the myriad cuisines that are found across the subconti-

nent. In this workshop, students will learn about basic ingredients and techniques for cooking Indian food. The

geography and culture of India will also be discussed.

Love Poetry Saturday, September 13 @ 2:00 pm

Participants will learn about the poetry of love and will be encouraged to write

a love poem. For ages 18 & up!

Publishing Poetry Tuesday, October 14 @ 7:00 pm

Budding poets will learn from an established poet and

publisher how to submit poems to magazines or manuscripts to publishers. Handouts, Q&A are included. Instructed by: Martin Willitts Jr. is a retired librarian living in Syracuse, NY who has won numerous poetry awards and has appeared in numerous chapbooks and poetry anthologies. These projects have been made possible with funds from the DeCentralization Program, a re-grant program of the NYS Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the NYS Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.

shortcuts to some of the best career-related sites on the web. Find a quiet corner in the Library to work on your

resume and get started on your future!

Borrowers MUST present a valid Library card and photo ID (valid driver license, passport, or sheriff’s ID ONLY). The laptop may be used for up to 3 hours and may not leave the Library.
